Local Maschmeyer picks up first Olympic win against Russia John Mather Staff Reporter
Bruderheim’s Emerance Maschmeyer backstopped the Canadian Women’s hockey team to 6-1 win over Russia in a game marred by controversy. The start of the game was initially delayed because the Russian had not verified Covid test results before the start of the game. But there was no confirmation of that as the cause from the Canadian team representatives. “I don’t have that information,” Team Canada coach Troy Ryan said when asked about the cause of the delayed beginning. “All I was told, for health and safety reasons, that there was going to be a delay.” After much delay, including talk of possible forfeiture, the game started with all participants wearing masks under their face shields. Through three games Team Canada has outscored its opponents by a 29-3 margin. It was Maschmeyer’s first start in the Olympic tournament and she faced 12 Russian shots while the Canadian squad blasted 49 shots at the Russian net. In Olympic competition, Canada has a perfect record when playing the Russians, having won five times with an all time goal difference of 351. Canada played the US, Feb. 8, and defeated them 4-2 in what was expected to be a preview of the gold medal game. Maschmeyer didn’t play in that game.
