School Division continues to see high absentee rates Leslie Cholowsky Editor
The Battle River School Division (BRSD) reported Monday that the division continues to see higher than usual absent numbers in many of its schools. BRSD Director of Communications Diane Hutchinson says, “With high school classes wrapping up at the end of the week and a new semester starting tomorrow, we will be continuing to keep a close eye on attendance numbers of both students and staff.” She adds, “It’s an ongoing challenge to find substitute staff when someone needs to be away from school.” BRSD presently has nine classes in the school division that are currently learning remotely. “Most are in Camrose, but there is also a class in Forestburg.” As well, she says
Forestburg, Viking School, Charlie Killam School, and Camrose Composite have all suspended extra-curricular activities temporarily over the last week due to the high absence numbers at their schools. “Many of those suspensions we hope can lift in the next few days.” Schools were closed Monday, Jan. 31, and Hutchinson says the division took advantage of a three-day weekend to conduct an extra electrostatic spray cleaning at every school and work site. As of Friday, most schools in the division had received a first shipment of masks and rapid test kits from the Province, with a few receiving a second round of supplies. The Division requires that all students, families, and staff complete a daily self-assessment and stay home if sick.

Sabres outlast Outlaws in big 6-4 win
LESLIE CHOLOWSKY PHOTO
The Sedgewick Sabres hosted the Delburne Outlaws on Saturday, Jan. 29, in the Sedgewick Wild Rose Co-op Recreation Centre. The Outlaws ran out of steam in the third, and the Sabres capitalized with a 6-3 win, moving ahead of the Irma Aces to hold second place. Above: Sedgewick net minder Brendan Davis got bowled over by a Delburne player, luckily without injury, during Saturday nightʼs game. See story and more photos Page 18.

‘Killam with Kindness’ campaign being launched Lougheed Sandra Erickson Ph: 780-384-2030
Sedgewick email: sedgewicknews@gmail.com
Sue Lee from the Sedgewick Gas station generously donated $10,000 towards the Carea-Van project by FIRST. The Care-a-van takes people from Flagstaff County to medical appointments they may otherwise not be able to get to. It was also mentioned in last week's edition. Such generosity certainly can use another shout-out! Way to go Sue! If you are needing a ride to a medical appointment, make sure to get in touch with FFCS. You can also sign up as a driver. Speaking of kindness, Killam Chamber of Commerce is having a ‘Killam with Kindness’ campaign. If you live or work in Killam, or have visited recently, and someone in the community brightened your day with any act of kindness, the Chamber is asking you send them an email about it. Stories will be accepted until next Friday, Feb. 11. Then the Chamber will share these stories on social media in the hopes of brightening people’s days and encouraging further acts of kindness throughout the year. This sounds like a great idea. Check out their ad in the classifieds section to send the email. The Bergie Tournament is this coming weekend. Make sure to cheer on your teams. It's gonna be a busy weekend at the Wild Rose Co-op Recreation Centre this Friday and Saturday. The Grade 1, 2, and 3 students had skating this past week as part of their curriculum. I certainly appreciate that these little things are possible again. Thank you to all the teachers! And also a huge thank you to the parents that showed up to help tie skates. It sure makes things go smoother to get the kids on and off the ice. The Battle River Knights Minor Hockey
Association did their draw for the winners of the cash raffle. Make sure you check out if you got a winning ticket. Thanks to everyone who supported this fundraiser. Lastly, mark your calendar for the Annual Stronger Together Women's Conference put on by the Community Adult Learning Centre on April 21. This year's guest speaker is Debra DeWaal from Calgary. Debra started her journey by working as a Constable with the Calgary Police Service in numerous team environments. Simultaneously honed her skills as a management consultant, working with a variety of organizations and other consultants. After she left the Calgary Police Service, she shifted her focus to full time operations of her company Safe & Sound. Debra has been a professional member of the
Canadian Association of Professional Speakers as well as the National Speaker Association since 2004 and is a Certified
Performance Coach through Corporate Performance Coaching. It's definitely an event to look forward to.
