RCMP charge Forestburg man under cannabis legislation Leslie Cholowsky Editor, with files from Cpl. Trent Cleveland, Killam RCMP

During the period from Wednesday, Feb. 3, to Monday, Feb. 21, Killam RCMP dealt with 91 calls for service. During that period, RCMP laid eight Criminal Code charges. On Feb. 6, a 65-year-old male from Lougheed was charged with Assault and Uttering Threats. The individual will appear in Court on March 3 in Killam. On Feb. 11, Killam members assisted Viking RCMP where a 32-year-old male from Viking was charged with Operation of a motor vehicle while prohibited. Court is scheduled for March 15, in Vegreville. On Feb. 12, a 45-year-old female from Killam was charged with failing to comply with undertaking conditions. Also on Feb. 12, a 48-year-old male from Galahad was charged with Failing to appear. On Feb. 13, a 65-year-old male from

Lougheed was charged with Failing to comply with an undertaking on two counts. The individual is scheduled to appear in court on March 3 in Killam. On Feb. 14, a 19-year-old from Forestburg was charged with Provincial Violations including, Transport of cannabis in an open package within reach of driver, Unlawful use of cannabis in a Vehicle, and has received a 30-day driving suspension under Provinical legislation. On Feb. 19, a motor vehicle was reported to have been taken without consent. The owner did not want to pursue charges. The motor vehicle was returned to the owner without damages. Also on Feb 19, Killam RCMP assisted Wetaskiwin Integrated Traffic Unit with a traffic stop where a 46-year-old male from Heisler was found in possession of an illegal substance. RCMP also dealt with two 911 hangups. Local statistics show that false 911 calls have increased substantially this year over last going to double digits in January for the first time since 2018.

One false alarm came in to RCMP. Police received four complaints about abandoned vehicles, and dealt with three animal calls during this period. RCMP received one complaint of Assault with a weapon. Killam members provided assistance four times to other police agencies, and twice to the general public. Police responded to three instances of breach of the peace. Four break and enters were reported to police and are presently being investigated. RCMP had two reports of sudden death. One person was charged with failure to remain at the scene of a collicion. RCMP are looking into three complaints of fraud. Police received one complaint under the Health Act relating to COVID-19. Found items were returned to Killam RCMP to be returned to their owner. Members had one complaint of mischief. Two complaints of impaired driving were received.

RCMP handed out six provincial traffic violation tickets, as well as four other provincial statutes. Three complaints of theft under $5,000 were made to police. One complaint of sexual assault was made to RCMP and is presently under investigation. The public reported 10 suspicious persons or vehicles to police. The number of reports of this nature have steadily increased over the past five years, and police encourage these types of reports to non-emergency numbers. RCMP had 12 motor vehicle collisions reported during this time period. Members were asked to perform four wellbeing checks. Killam RCMP will welcome a new member to the Detachment this week, as Cst. Nick Daigle starts later this week. Daigle is an experienced RCMP, and chose to come to Killam. He has replaced the cadet that was expected to join the detachment this spring, according to Detachment C/O Sgt. Colin Thorne.
