RCMP Report: three Daysland vehicles targeted in theft of catalytic converters Leslie Cholowsky Editor, with files from Cst. Nicholas Daigle Killam RCMP

Thieves targeted three U-Haul trucks in Daysland and removed and stole the catalytic converters on Feb. 8. Killam RCMP members had a busy month, with 129 files from Feb. 1 to 18, compared to 82 in the same period last year, and 121 total for the month of February 2021. Suspicious vehicle and persons reports are up, with 15 reports made to RCMP so far this month. Two communities in particular, Amisk and Galahad, are experiencing higher calls of this nature. RCMP had 17 vehicle collisions reported during the first 18 days of Feb-

ruary, primarily due to road conditions, or wildlife. Police had 10 false alarms, with eight of the 10 coming from a local bank whose internal alarm system was having some work done. With high fuel prices, RCMP are dealing with reports of gas siphoning from Strome, Daysland, Amisk, and Galahad. There were six break and enters reported to RCMP, including the Hardisty Bottle Depot, where thieves entered the building but nothing appeared to be stolen. The Galahad Health Centre had a garage door kicked in, but nothing appeared to be missing at first glance. In other instances, a rural garage was broken into, and a trail cam was stolen from an acreage. RCMP laid one Assault with

weapon charge. Police have had reports of seven abandoned vehicles, however all were determined to be non-criminal in nature. So far in February, eight complaints or incidents have been cleared by charges. These include three people charged with failing to attend court; one traffic charge, failure to yield, one assault charge, one stunting charge, one impaired driving charge, and one person charged with being unlawfully in a dwelling. RCMP had a report of graffiti done to a building in Amisk with blue spray paint, and were notified of an attempt to siphon fuel from a vehicle. RCMP had a number of requests for assistance from the public, most were non-criminal in nature, asking for ad-

vice or assistance. Police were asked to perform five well-being checks, all individuals were located and healthy. One sudden death was reported to RCMP. Police investigated complaints of uttering threats, finding them unfounded. Two vehicle thefts were reported. A car was reported stolen from Killam, and later recovered in Coronation, and a 1998 Dodge Ram truck, also stolen from Killam, was still missing at press time. Despite increased service call numbers, RCMP are not seeing an increase in property or person crime year over year. RCMP urge residents to report all crime to police, not just on social media.

Strome memorial garden now complete; windmill top restored Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Back in 2012, when Strome was still a village, a group of citizens approached Village Council to see if the empty lots on the south end of Main Street could be used to start a memorial garden. On of those residents, Linda Nykolaishyn, says, “With their help, we got the garden started.” The group sent out letters to residents, asking if there was interest in sponsoring memorial trees or benches, and got a phenomenal response. When all was said and done, over 60 trees were planted, and about five benches placed in the park, that also housed a windmill. The group held a work bee, with 10 or 15 people coming out to get everything together. “We noticed the windmill top was gone. Apparently it had been taken down after Strome’s Homecoming to be repaired.” Nykolaishyn says after some searching, the top was found at one of the village shops. She says she knew where to find help with the restoration project, ap-

proaching Brenda Wolbeck, who she knew was a member of the Strome Ag. Society. “I asked her if she would bring it up to the board, to see if they would take it on.” She chose well, because they did agree to do it. Nykolaishyn recently noticed that the windmill top is now in place, and seems to be working perfectly. She says she’s really grateful to the Ag. Society members who worked on

the project. Initially the park was tended to by volunteers, but in recent years, Flagstaff County crews have done the grass cutting, although volunteers still plant flowers and do the fine trimming when necessary. “It’s the little things that make a difference,” Nykolaishyn says. She’s proud of her community, and says a project like this inspires a sense of community pride.

A cut above, tree pruning It may feel like to wrong season for it, but now is an ideal time to be pruning those trees you’ve been thinking about. The best time for pruning a tree is when it is dormant. Pruning in late fall or early winter can result in some new growth if there is an unseasonable warm spell. Winter pruning is the best time because it is easier to see dead or diseased branches. You don’t have to worry about sap bleeding and spreading a disease. Also, winter pruning stimulates new growth first thing in the spring. Why prune? We prune trees to improve the health and the shape of the tree. You want to allow good air circulation and light penetration into the tree. That maximizes photosynthetic sun capture and prevents possible disease spread. Trees with branches growing laterally are more likely to be damaged if there is a heavy load placed upon it. This could be due to an extra heavy fruit crop or early spring heavy snow. Those branches weaken the tree and

may encourage disease by cracking open the bark. There are four main types of pruning. They are crown thinning, crown raising, crown reduction, and crown cleaning. The reason the crown is involved in all of them is that the crown is where most of the photosynthetic activity occurs. Crown thinning involves removal of selected live branches to reduce the density of branches in the tree to increase sunlight penetration and air flow. Thinning takes only 10 to 20% of branches and shouldn’t change the shape or size of the tree. It should not even look pruned. Crown raising is a gradual removal of lower branches over time to improve access under the tree or sightlines. Crown reduction is usually used on older, more mature trees. It can help strengthen the tree and encourage new growth. Branches are cut back to the growing lateral branch. Finally, crown cleaning removes dead or diseased branches. This can be

done at anytime versus the other three trimming methods. You can trim healthy branches during the growing season, but you risk weakening the tree. After it puts energy into growing new shoots, trimming them is counter-productive and that energy has been wasted. When pruning is done in winter, there may be some bleeding of sap in the spring, but it will quickly stop with the onset of new growth. The right tools for the job make it so much easier. Hand secateurs are useful cutting stems up to half an inch in diametre. Loppers have long handles for added leverage to cut branches up

to 1 or 2 inches in diametre. For anything bigger, use a pruning saw which can cut through a branch quickly with aggressive teeth. When using a saw cut off the branch twice to prevent damaging the tree. First cut branches at the node, where one branch attaches to another.
