Every year several organizations in the Town of Viking get together to put on a party to celebrate the importance of local families. The frigid weather on Monday limited outdoor activities but those who came out filled the lobby at the Viking Carena Complex and had a great time playing games and enjoying food and beverages provided free of charge. The youngsters also were able to take in some free public skating in the ice arena. The event ran from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and was sponsored by Viking/Beaver FCSS, Beaver County Community Adult Learning, the Viking Lions, and the Town of Viking. There were family activities, an indoor play structure, along with food and drink provided by Viking Lions Club. Other games included bingo and a scavenger hunt as part of the afternoon's entertainment. The tradition of holding a Family Day in Alberta began 30 years ago as a holiday allowing people to spend time with their families and appreciate them in a special way. It is celebrated on the third Monday of February and is not a national statutory holiday. The idea has spread and over the years four more provinces now celebrate their own version of Family Day including Saskatchewan, British Columbia, Manitoba, and Ontario.
