Centenarians to be honoured

Centenarians to be permanently honoured in Lamont

BY JANA SEMENIUK

The Town of Lamont wants to wish their centenarian residents a happy birthday and recognize them permanently.

A motion carried at the Feb. 8 Lamont Town Council meeting declared that all residents turning 100 years of age will be honoured with a tree planted in their name as well as a commemorative leaf placed on the recognition tree that’s painted on the pavilion in Hillside Park.

“The Town of Lamont has the very fortunate opportunity in 2022 to recognize several individuals that will be turning the young age of 100,” said Chief Administrative Officer Rick Bastow. “We estimate that there might be as many as six persons in Lamont, that could reach the age of 100. We currently have three potentially four confirmed, but we are looking to verify.”

Bastow said families will pick one tree, out of three, that will be planted in their centenarian family members’ name. In addition, Bastow said the offer will extend to people past the age of 100 as well as residents who may have moved.

“While the focus will be on individuals turning 100 In the year 2022, this by no means precludes individuals who have previously turned 100. We're asking the public, friends and family or the individual to contact us so we can include them,” he said.

“In the event that there's an individual in the county who might also be turning 100 years of age, or alternatively, someone who's a lifelong resident of the county, but now resides out of town, it’s the intention of administration to work with the public as much as possible.”

Councillor Linda Seiker wholeheartedly agreed with the proposal.

“I fully support this project. I think it's a respectful, long lasting and visible way to honour our residents that have turned 100,” she said.

Bastow included that the cost to plant the tree and place the commemorative leaf will cost the Town approximately $221 for each resident. In addition, due to possible challenges with planting trees in winter weather, Batow suggested the inductions occur at Lamont’s annual Picnic in the Park event.

“It is a significant accomplishment for anyone to achieve the age of 100. I think it speaks volumes about the health and vitality of Lamont, that we could have so many people in the same year achieving such a considerable number,” Bastow said.

The motion was passed unanimously.
