Viking Lights Up for the Holidays Patricia Harcourt Editor

The Town of Viking’s Parade of Lights showed off the holiday spirit as people lined the streets to see floats and lights going past. The event was a great success despite the colder temperatures. Santa Claus in his flowing white beard, and the Grinch sporting his green face, strolled up and down the street and encountered children with their upturned faces eagerly waiting to greet them. The parade wasn’t held last year due to the pandemic, but this year brought out many people hoping to regain some of the small town advantages of celebrating Christmas. This year’s judges gave the first place float prize to Parrish & Heimbecker (P&H). Second place went to Home Hardware and Emcon received third prize for their float. Claystone Waste, which also had a float in the parade, sponsored the prizes. Everyone headed directly following

the parade to the Viking Carena Complex for more fun activities. Vision Credit Union staff served up the popular free hot dogs, and ATB Viking sponsored the visits with Santa Claus. The hot chocolate was flowing freely and many people enjoyed free skating on the rink. The concession stand was open and many. partook of some delicious food offered there. It was a time to greet friends and family and enjoy some socializing, masks being mandatory due to the health restrictions in place. Town of Viking CAO Don McLeod stated that over 200 people attended the event, which was also hailed as another success in helping give residents some Christmas cheer. This week, the Fourth Annual Christmas Lights Competition will see judging take place on Thursday, December 9. There will be hot chocolate courtesy of the Viking Lions, and people will be able to vote for their favourite decorated residence/business. There will also be an opportunity to give a donation to the Food Bank.
