Sharun family lights up the night sky and hearts of friends and neighbours during light up celebration Michelle Pinon Editor
For Mundare area resident Brian Sharun this is the most wonderful time of year. To celebrate, Brian, his wife Shawna, and 16-yearold daughter Cheyyne, invited as many family members, friends, and neighbours to their annual Christmas Light Up celebration on Dec. 5th. More than 150 people came to see Brian’s metal and rope light creations be brought to life with a flick of a switch shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday evening. Even Santa Claus made an appearance to the delight of all the children, who got to sit on his knee and share their Christmas wishes with. Brian, who is a member of the local fire department, was also collecting donations for the fire department, and with the generosity of guests helped collect $555 for the worthy cause. “We started the Light Up about 10 years ago,” said Brian. “Actually, it was 11 years ago,” noted Shawna. Normally, there are between 15 and 20 people in attendance, but this year the family invited a larger circle of people, and included co-workers, friends, and acquaintances. The Light Up started with one project, a Christmas wreath, and has grown every year since. Strolling through their large yard, guests looked at a giant sized Nativity Scene, Christmas carolers, Santa and his eight reindeer, Santa going down the chimney, the STARS air ambulance, sleigh ride, giant Christmas tree, choo-choo train, Santa driving a golf cart, Shawna’s favourite – a gingerbread house, and daughter Cheyyne’s request of penguins and an igloo. “That’s new this year,” added Brian. Brain has spent countless hours in his shop making the steel frames and fastening rope lights. There have been countless visitors to their yard during the holiday season over the years. Shawna said pictures of the spectacular Christmas creations have been sent all over the world, including South Africa and the Ukraine. He buys the rope lights in 150 foot rolls. “I get them wholesale from an outfit in BC, so I get a good deal.” For Brian, there is always a “work in progress”; and he is thrilled to be able to share his joy and passion with others. With the latest celebration having just wrapped up, there will no doubt be many more visitors to their property which is located just off of Highway 16 on Range Road 170.
