Lamont County Regional Fire Chief Resigns

BY JANA SEMEIUK Lamont County Regional Fire Chief, Bo Moore, has resigned.

The confirmation was made by Lamont County Communications Director Jay Zaal by email

Dec. 18.

“Regional Fire Chief Bo Moore has tendered his resignation effective January 13 for personal reasons. Interim and recruitment decisions have not been made at

this time,” he said.

Moore came to the county on June 12, 2023, from a deputy fire chief position in the City of Leduc which he resigned from in March of that year.

100-year-old Lamont veteran honoured at Oilers game

BY JANA SEMENIUK The stands were packed at Roger’s Place on Nov. 10 when Marty Jones shuffled with his walker onto a darkcoloured carpet laid across the ice.

The 100-year-old retired Able Seaman, born in 1925 at Lamont, a village at the time, was being honoured before the scheduled Oilers game against the Columbus Blue Jackets, for his service during World War II. Jones wore a brown vintage Eston Ramblers hockey jacket and a ball cap with ‘Normandy DDay 6th of June 1944’ embroidered on it.

According to reports, Jones grew up in Lashburn SK and listed in the service at only 16

years old, along with his older brother Bill.

Jones turned 19 on May 30, 1944, only one week before D-Day.

Lamont Curling Club new ice plant installation going smoothly

Curling season could start by the new year

BY JANA SEMENIUK The installation of the Lamont Curling Club’s (LCC) brand-new ice plant meant a delay to the start of the curling season this year, but town Community Development Coordinator Dave Taylor said opening day is just around the corner.

“Normally curling season starts in November, and the curling club did lose some of their league play, but they’re going to start (again) as soon as things are up and running,” Taylor said, adding he hopes for a start date by the end of December.

The old ice plant, a used model installed over 40 years ago, finally gave out as the club was finishing their season in April, forcing them to improvise with melting ice during their final bonspiel. As a result, Keg Curling was born and earned the LCC a spot on national television.

In an earlier interview, LCC president Aaron Gieger said Keg Curling turned out to be plenty of fun and might find its way into the club’s year end program.

Meanwhile, Taylor was enthusiastic around the club’s new ice plant

which he said is superior to the older system in several ways.

“The old plant was in the back room here and was freon based, which no one supports anymore because it’s (got) environmental (issues).

(The new one) is an outside unit that connects to the existing infrastructure and it’s easy to service and way more energy efficient,” he said, adding the Town is using local company, EMCI for the electrical work. “It’s a heated self-contained unit.”

Taylor said as soon as the installation is complete it will take approximately a week to get the ice laid down. The cost to the Town was $600,000 with 25 percent, $150,000, to be fundraised by the LCC. In terms of who is responsible for the curling club building, Taylor said the Town owns the facility while the lease is signed over to the curling club during curling season.

Taylor added that a possible grand re-opening of the curling club could be in the works to celebrate the new ice plant and kick off the delayed season.

FROM WHERE I SIT: A Better 2026

BY HAZEL ANAKA When I was a regular reader of the Edmonton Journal and the National Post, I especially loved the articles that showed up at the end of the year.

Daily newspapers still had departments (and even actual sections!) like business, travel, food, politics, crime, sports, books, entertainment, and more. There may have been a features section that focused at a deeper level on bigger topics; sometimes in multi-part series. Back in the day daily newspapers still had reporters, columnists, budgets, and a devoted and loyal readership. Columnists often achieved cult status and parlayed their name recognition into the world of book publishing.

Prior to the arrival and pervasiveness of the internet and all that

means, they were the goto source for a deeper, analytical look at the news. Radio and TV were fine for sound bites and immediacy but wholly inadequate for analysis. Twenty-fourhour online news apps now are as close as that smart phone grafted onto the end of our hands. Both radical and respected personalities have platforms through social media and often podcasts. No one needs to wonder for long what anyone from world leaders to Joe Blow thinks about an issue or event.

Just check your phone.

I feel the need to interject/apologize here. This nostalgic look back at newspapers isn’t where I intended this piece to go but yet it is valid and I’m keeping it in.

The groundwork I thought I was laying was this: the year-end issues of newspapers always included a departmental roundup of the year’s events. The food section might highlight the best new restaurants in the city. The books section would ask fellow reporters/columnists for their favourite book of the year or what they would be reading over

the holidays or the titles piled high on their night stand. The sports writers would regurgitate stats, make predictions, highlight athletic achievements, or focus on newsworthy athletes.

Newspaper photographers would feature the 10 best photos of the year often including some award-winning ones.

The editorial cartoonist would do a composite of twelve especially relevant political cartoons to summarize the year’s big news or personalities.

The person covering the city beat might do a report card on each

Reporters covering federal politics would have weighed in on the performance of the prime minister, amount of legislation passed, and the leadership status of the opposition parties.

Entertainment reporters might focus on Hollywood hits and misses, marriages and divorces, best movies, eye-popping scandals, or an in-memoriam tribute.

Who sold the most records, grossed the most concert revenue, or attracted the largest crowds are often fodder for these lists.

The business section experts would have kept busy tracking the incoherent Trump economic policies and their effect on Canadians. A stock market recap of winners and losers was also offered. We could usually count on a ‘shopping cart’ comparison between the current year and some better time in the distant or not-so-distant past. Food, housing, and fuel are always popular metrics for tracking how far we’ve fallen.

Household debt and how much more we are spending than we earn are always shockers. I’ll save you looking it up: as of the third quarter, Canadians were spending $1.76 (of after-tax income) for every dollar they earned. That represents a mountain of credit card debt; often growing at criminally high interest rates. It is not a winning ratio and considerably higher than what it used to be. Ahh, what about the good old days when we overspent our income by only

When the idea for this column popped into my head, I naively thought I could offer my own Top Ten list of something or other to encapsulate 2025. But that’s a no-win fool’s errand not without having made some notes during the year. I couldn’t recap what happened last week never mind January 2025.

That said, I think it’s safe to say Trump tops the list of things that most concerned Canadians in 2025. Most of the other concerns flow from that: prices of everything, potential for job loss, uncertainty about a tri-lateral trade deal review mandated for 2026, travel plan changes, and one’s own financial well-being.

Closer to home some of us are concerned about the state of federal, provincial, and local politics; whether “the” pipeline will ever get built; and whether our own state of health and finances is up to the challenges ahead. Will PM Carney’s ‘build baby build’ rhetoric become visible or is this just the latest series of wellmeaning promises of improved prosperity?

Let’s hope for a better 2026, from where I sit.

Lamont Kids Christmas store big hit

BY JANA SEMENIUK The third annual Lamont Kids Christmas Store, held on Nov. 29 during the Lamont Light Up event, was another huge success this year.

The little store, where only kids are allowed to shop among donated items listed for between $1 and $10, was bustling with shoppers and able to raise a large amount of money for the County of Lamont Food Bank according to Town of Lamont Deputy Chief Adminis-trative Officer Dawn Nielson who gave a short report at the Dec. 9 council meeting.

“I think it went great.

We had way more donations this year and I think that really helped the sales,” she said. “We were busy the entire

time.”

In all, Nielson said the efforts raised $1,400 for the food bank.

Food Bank Chair Jody Zachoda said the donation was welcome news and the board feels grateful for the community support.

“We are grateful for the generous $1,400 donation from the Just For Kids Christmas store and truly excited by the continued support of our community,” she said.

“A portion of this donation may be designated toward the building fund, however the board will meet to review our overall budget and formally allocate the funds in a way that best supports our mission and ongoing needs.”

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we say good bye to Scott Stefura.

He was born and raised in Lamont, Alberta, eventually moving to Toronto to be with the love of his life and raise a family. He will be dearly missed by his loving wife, Danovia (nee Stechishin); his children, Eliajah (Zoe), Gabriel and Konvalia; his mother, Christine; his siblings, Michael, Laurie (Bob Eliuk), Terry, and his nephew and Godson, Zachary Eliuk (Megan). He is predeceased by his father, Mike, and father-in-law, Myron Stechishin.

Scott possessed a profoundly warm and bright spirit that warmly embraced others, making him truly one of a kind. He was known by everyone as a remarkably kind and gentle soul who acted selflessly. His greatest joy was seeing happiness for others, rather than seeking any praise upon himself. His

magnificent presence would light up the room, amplified by his infectious laugh and sense of humor.

Scott was an accomplished Ukrainian dancer. Dancing with groups such as the Lamont Veselka Dancers, Kupalo, Shumka and later, Arkan (Toronto), allowed him the opportunity to tour and perform in places like Taiwan, Mexico, Turkey, China, Ukraine, Brazil, and extensively across Canada and the US. He helped to run The Ukrainian Academy of Dance Inc., Arkan Dance Company, and Stefura Dance Studios in Toronto with his wife. Beyond stage performances, he was a long-time tower-crane operator in the Greater Toronto Area, and a devoted member of the Sri Sri Sri Shivabalayogi Maharaj Meditation Centre.

He was happiest working on his passions: pampering his Jeep SRT and motorcycle, collaborating, often from a distance, on various projects with his brothers and father, getting satisfaction from tinkering with anything mechanical, and using his skilled hands to renovate three homes, two dance studios, and two meditation centres.

Scott always uplifted others, and may his legacy continue to live within us.

ARA students pie staff in fundraising effort

BY JANA SEMENIUK Students at Andrew Rural Academy embarked on a fun-filled afternoon fundraiser Dec. 15, that not only raised money for their STEM program but also allowed kids to do the unthinkable; pie their teachers, and other staff members, in the face.

For a mere $2, kids bought a whipping cream pie and ‘delivered’ it to the teacher or staff member of their choice.

Principal Terrance Prusak said the event was fun and so popular they ran out of pies.

“We had to improvise,” said Prusak. “We used shaving cream.”

Prusak said the idea came from one of the school’s staff members who thought it would make a fun way to raise money.

“She came up with the idea of ‘Pie the teacher day’ which was pretty enticing for the students,” said Prusak. “All the teachers volunteered and it was actually very successful.”

Prusak said the event raised approximately $200.

Meanwhile, Prusak said things are moving along for the STEM program at the school and the new administration is working on efficiency and improvements going into the new year.

In addition to contributing to the holiday cheer, the Sharuns also collect donations at their annual light-up party, the first day the lights get turned on, for a local charity.

This year, however, Sharun said he had a different donation recipient in mind; Haying in the 30s, a charity that supports those living with cancer.

Sharun said he visited the Haying in the 30s event in Mallaig, where an old-fashioned town from the 1930s is set up including a one room school, church, stores, blacksmith shop, and a

demonstration of what it was like to harvest in the 30s. The event is held every year with admission and enjoyment of the grounds free, although donations are accepted.

“We jumped in the truck and said we’d be back in a few hours.

Well, probably six hours later we finally showed back up. It was amazing what they do there, and everything is free,” said Sharun.

Sharun said he sells hay from his own farm including to Barrie Stafford, who Sharun said worked for the Edmonton Oilers many years ago and regularly buys hay from Sharun.

“I told him that the light up money will (be) collected for Haying in the 30s, and (Barrie) was a cancer survivor. He (also) received money from them. And the two couples he brought to the

light up were also cancer survivors who received money from Haying in the 30s,” said Sharun. “(Barrie) brought an Oilers jersey, Jari Kurri, with a card (stating) it’s authentic. He thought we could raffle it off or something.”

Sharun decided to do something more special with the incredible donation.

“We just donated (the jersey) to Haying in the 30s,” he said. “We had the president come over and we donated it. I’m not sure what they’ll do (with it, but) they’ll probably raise more money than we would have.”

Meanwhile, Sharun said he creates a new display every year to add to the 27 already dotting his landscape. He said set up begins at the end of Oct. and takes approximately one month to complete.

“I’m switching them slowly all to LED. Big

difference,” he said, adding that they have so far saved approximately 20 percent in their electricity bill.“Plus, they’re a lot brighter.”

In terms of what new

display he has planned for next year, Sharun wouldn’t say.

“Sorry it’s a secret,” he said. “As long as I can keep welding and bending, I’ll still do it.”

Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville MLA recall gets officials status

BY JOHN MATHER The Recall Petition for Fort SaskatchewanVegreville MLA Jackie Armstrong-Homeniuk is now official,.

Armstrong-Homeniuk posted a letter of defence Dec.10 and the Recall was posted on the Elections Alberta website Dec. 16 with the petition issued Dec. 17.

Armstrong-Homeniuk’s statement of defence reads, “Representing Fort Saskatchewan - Vegreville since 2019 is both an honour and a responsibility that I deeply value.

“In 2023, voters renewed their overwhelming trust in me and the platform I ran on with an even stronger mandate. “Their democratic decision deserves to be respected.

“I will uphold the commitments that earned this support while ensuring all voices in our constituency are considered.

“My focus remains on doing the work voters elected me to do, advocating for this constituency, and delivering results for all persons of Fort Saskatchewan – Vegreville.”

Ratepayers who want to see the recall through to the expulsion of the MLA now have until March 17 to collect 14,688 signatures to put the expulsion into effect.

If successful Armstrong-Homeniuk would be removed as MLA and a by-election would be held.

ArmstrongHomeniuk could run in the by-election.

Lamont County passes interim budget for 2026 resulting in 2% tax increases

BY JOHN MATHER Lamont County council passed its interim budget at its Dec. 16 council meeting.

The bylaw passed following several meetings in August and December when various County departments brought forward their budget requests for the next year.

The budget includes operating revenues of $28,118,481 including a transfer from the IT reserve of $33,000 and looking at operating expenses of $30,623,562 including amortization of $2.927 million.

The council also passed its Capital budget with expenditures projected to be $823,000 and capital asset purchases of $2,179,282.

Transfers from the

2026 reserves to the capital budget included: $466,337 from the bridge replacement reserve; $18,000 from the Emergency Services reserve for equipment; $433,000 from the capital reserve; $550,0000 from the capital road reserve; $257,046 from the vehicle and equipment reserve; and $500,000 from the Twp Rd. 560 reserve to the Environmental Remediation Reserve.

The budget results in a two percent increase in farm and residential taxes to cover inflation and service enhancements and moves the County towards funding the full cost of equipment replacement; a cost of living allowance of two per cent; an increase in the Duty Crews at emergency departments

to 26 weeks to allow for added daytime coverage for emergency incidents; the hiring of the second Peace Officer to allow for succession planning; a reduction in Snow Flag revenue to to offer service for free medical flags and $100 for Senior flags; and to dedicate funding to amend the land-use by-law to support requested tourism opportunities.

Expect to see some changes in water fees for Lamont County in 2026.

In the new budget for 2026, Council has raised the water rates by three per cent.

The requisitions from school boards and the seniors housing facilities still have to be factored in before the final budget is presented in the spring.

Birders set to gather at Elk Island on Boxing Day

BY JOHN MATHER Beginning Boxing Day, the Friends of Elk Island Society will host the annual Christmas Bird Count at Elk Island National Park and surrounding area.

Across Canada, this will be the 126th year a bird count has been held.

Norm Cameron has been heading up the bird count for the past five years.

In an email he pointed out last year, there were 42 participants who counted birds for a total of almost 54 hours.

The Friends of Elk Island Society have been doing their annual count since 1983.

“The Christmas Bird Count is an opportunity for everyone to come together and contribute to a tradition that helps birds” said Yousif Attia, Canadian leader for the Christmas Bird Count at Birds Canada.

Close to 100 communities across Alberta take part in the annual count.

Last year, local birders gathered at the Tawayik Shelter in Elk Island National Park. All data that is collected is then submitted to Birds Canada.

site points out as the Christmas Bird Count has evolved, so too has its role in addressing environmental issues, particularly climate change. For instance, studies have shown that many bird species are shifting their ranges northward in response to rising temperatures. This shift can disrupt ecosystems and lead to mismatches between the migration timing of birds and their food sources.

Cameron said the most common birds local spotters are likely to see include: Goshawks, Ruffed Grouse, Rock Dove, Downy Woodpecker, Hairy Woodpecker, Pileated Woodpecker, and the Blue Jay. Cameron said birds less likely to be observed but still may be are: the bald eagle, Roughlegged Hawk, Merlin, Long eared owl, short eared Owl, Boreal Owl, Saw-whet Owl, Great Grey Owl, Loggerhead Shrike, Purple Finch, Red Crossbill, Whitewinged Crossbill, European Starling, Bohemian waxwing, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Hoary Redpoll, and House Sparrow.

Goldeneyes defeat Ottawa while missing Maschmeyer

BY JOHN MATHER With Bruderheim goalie Emerance Maschmeyer off due to her commitment to the Canadian Women’s National team, the Vancouver Goldeneyes hosted Maschmeyer’s former team the Ottawa Charge Dec. 16 and skated to a 2-1 win.

Ottawa backstopper Gwyneth Philips faced 29 shots during the game, playing just days after she helped the U.S. team to the championship in the CanadaU.S. rivalry series in Edmonton.

Vancouver’s Karie Chan got the Goldeneyes on the board in the first period scoring an even strength goal from

Hannah Miller and Claire Thompson.

In the second period Jenn Gardiner scored an unassisted goal for Vancouver, and Anna Shokhina scored for Ottawa late in the third period from Peyton Hemp and Mannon MaMahon to complete the scoring.

Kristen Campbell stopped 33 of the 34 shots she faced in securing the win in goal for the Goldeneyes.

The Goldeneyes play Montreal in front of their home fans on Dec. 20 before taking a break for the Christmas period.

They play their last game of 2025 Dec.31, against the New York Sirens in the Big Apple.
