Christmas-A time for hope and gratitude Next week, we look back more than two thousand years to mark the birth of Jesus Christ.

Here in Battle RiverCrowfoot, and for millions of families from coast to coast to coast, Christmas is truly a time to celebrate with song, food and prayer – cherished traditions that have been passed down from one generation to the next.

Over the past several months, I’ve had the pleasure to get to know the incredible people of this region.

Deeply grounded in common-sense values, your spirit of hard work

and entrepreneurship has allowed your farms and businesses to overcome adversity and become the success stories that they are.

I have tremendously enjoyed my time here in the riding - meeting with and hearing from the families I am so proud to serve.

During the holidays, we are reminded of the challenges many people face, from struggling to afford basic necessities to the broader difficulties confronting Canada on the world stage.

Yet it is the hope we find in the Christmas story which reminds us

that even in uncertain times, there is light ahead.

The spirit of hope encourages us to persevere and continue to fight for what is right.

While many people are fortunate to enjoy time off with family during holidays, others continue to serve.

I want to acknowledge those who will be spending their Christmas on duty. From the first responders, health care workers, and the dedicated members of CFB Wainwright who give up their holiday in service of others. I would be remiss not to

acknowledge the oil and gas workers who keep the oil and gas flowing, the heat on in our homes and who keep our economy moving.

As 2025 draws to a close, we think of Bethlehem two thousand years ago: a humble town on the fringes of the vast Roman Empire, but in whose dark streets “shineth the everlasting light.”

Together with my wife, Anaida, and our children, Valentina and Cruz, we wish you all a very merry Christmas and happy New Year.

Christmas is a time for reflection For me, Christmas is a time to reflect, to be with the people we love, and to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.

It’s a time that fills us with the hope, peace, and love that His coming brings to the world.

It’s also about the simple traditions that bring us together. I have so many fond memories of gathering around the kitchen table to play cards and board games, laughing with family.

Some of my favourite memories are

from when we were kids, when my father built a sleigh by hand, hooked it up to the skidoo, and took us out bundled in warm blankets for winter rides.

Those moments of togetherness, joy, and creating memories are what Christmas is truly about.

I’m grateful for the kindness, strong faith, and sense of community that define our region, and I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

MLA Lovely’s speech in Legislature tells tale of the Grinch who stole copper wire George Lee Local Journalism Initiative Reporter

Greedy grinches in Forestburg forced the cancellation of a nostalgic shopping excursion by train to a market called Jolly Jingles, the legislature heard last week.

By digging their criminal claws into a train’s copper wiring, thieves denied shoppers a 1950s-era passenger train experience across the central Alberta prairie parkland landscape to the Christmas market in Rosalind.

Jolly Jingles went ahead as planned on Nov. 15.

But the trip offered by Battle River Train Excursions back and forth through Heisler did not.

Grinch comparisons aside, thefts of copper and other metals are a serious and costly criminal enterprise. And they’re a trend that the Alberta government continues to try to curtail, said the UCP’s Jacqueline Lovely.

“This type of story has become all too common, not only in my constituency but across Alberta,” said Lovely, who represents the riding of Camrose.

“Thieves will steal copper and other precious metals wherever they can be found, quickly reselling them to unscrupulous buyers who won’t question where they came from.”

Perhaps through an increasingly robust illegal market, a surge in copper theft in Alberta suggests criminals are circumventing a law that came into force five and a half years ago. The Scrap Metal Dealers and Recyclers Identification Act requires that legitimate buyers record sellers’ ID. It was strengthened through amendments this year to make it constitutional while closing a business-to-business loophole. Businesses selling scrap metal, legit or otherwise, hadn’t had to provide identification before the amendments.

Statistics that fully measure the copper theft problem aren’t available, but a good indicator comes from the communications provider Telus. The company saw a 58 per cent increase in copper theft in 2024 over the previous year in Alberta alone, it said in media reports.

Although valuable, stolen copper itself represents losses typically dwarfed by damages and other impacts. Reportage from across the province explains that the thefts jeopardize infrastructure, and pose threats to the environment and public safety. Cables are cut and stolen, wires are stripped from lighting and power infrastructure, and generators are stolen or damaged.

through lost revenue, service outages and charges, insurance premium increases, construction delays and costs for cleaning up environmental hazards.

By one published RCMP estimate, losses exceed $10 million per year in Alberta due to copper theft, including property damage. In October 2024, a single break-in at a commercial site in Nisku caused more than $700,000 in property damage.

Testimony from a year ago before the Senate Committee on Transport found that two unnamed companies alone faced damages totalling $8.5 million in Alberta in just over a year, a tally from 866 individual thefts.

In the Forestburg case, thieves stripped copper wiring and conduit from a power generator to the caboose and a passenger car. “Without this power

Thieves took the wiring from a generator motor and stole the starter, meaning the non-profit that runs six or more excursions a year has had to scramble for a long-term fix. Local reporting pegged damages at $30,000.

Concluded Lovely in her member statement: “To the Friends of the Battle River Rail and all other Albertans who have been the victims of theft and other crimes: we hear you. We hear that you’re fed up with the status quo, and we’re doing all that we can to stand up for you and your families because that is the right thing to do.”

OBITUARIES Jason Belanger

Jason (Ole) was born on June 11, 1980, in Killam, Alberta, to Leonard (Jake) Hopfe and Angele Belanger. He left us far too soon on Decem-

ber 1, 2025, at the age of 45.

Jason was the guy friends called when they needed a good time or a lending hand - whether it was fixing something, moving something, or just sharing a cold drink and a story.

He loved his family and friends and had a passion for riding his motorcycle, sled, dirt bike, and anything else that went really fast.

He also enjoyed camping, fishing, and hunting. He shared those passions with his family and friends, and those memories will be forever in our hearts.

He is survived by his three sons, Ryan McLaughlin (Brook Constable), Deagen McLaughlin, and Nixon McLaughlin, along with their mother, Lisa McLaughlin. He is also survived by his father

Jake, his mother Angele, sisters Heather (Bella) and Ashley (Taiten, Riley, Khya), and grandparents Heather and John Geerligs.

Jason leaves behind many special relatives, his in-laws and nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and countless friends who will miss his humor, the twinkle of mischief in his eyes, and that unforgettable giggle and grin.

He was predeceased by his grandparents Kathleen and Stan Hopfe, and his uncles Dean and Brent Hopfe.

A Celebration of Life will be held on December 20, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at the Hardisty Community Hall.

Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance of Jason’s life, sharing stories and honoring the legacy he leaves behind. There

will be refreshments after the service.

Canada's food safety agency warns it couldn't handle multiple emergencies Natasha Bulowsk Local Journalism Initiative Reporter Canada's food safety agency doubts it could adequately protect the food supply in the next two years if the country is hit with several concurrent emergencies, such as animal disease outbreaks or food safety recalls. The problem is exacerbated by climate change, with the agency warning the crisis could impact its infrastructure while boosting the risk of disease and pest outbreaks.

The warning is laid out in a 2024-2027 corporate risk assessment the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) completed last year and was obtained by Canada's National Observer through an access to in-

formation request. Failures in the agency's aging infrastructure, and the inability to meet inspection standards or stay financially viable are also listed as top concerns.

The threats are significant enough senior officials assigned each so-called "critical risk" its own vice president within the agency, and emphasized that "every [CFIA] employee has a role to play."

"The CFIA is increasingly worried about being able to handle multiple situations at once at precisely the moment when they can be expected to have multiple situations to handle," said Lawrence Goodridge, director of the Canadian Research Institute for Food Safety and professor at the University of

Guelph.

This year alone, the agency has been dealt a Salmonella crisis on Iranian pistachios that required extensive testing and import limits, and a months-long battle to cull a herd of ostriches in BC which culminated in a lengthy, police-protected takeover of the farm. Last year, the agency scrambled to contain a listeriosis outbreak in plant-based beverages that sent 15 people to hospital and killed three.

The risk assessment notes the CFIA is facing about $200 million in deferred maintenance costs and "lacks sufficient funding to replace or modernize its infrastructure." These costs are on top of inflation, supply chain disruptions and a suite of other rising costs

which, taken together, make it likely the agency will run out of money before 2027.

“When governments are cutting back funding and personnel but our disease risks are going up, and the expectations internationally for what we do are going up, it's not a good combination,” said Scott Weese, profes-

avian flu, which has a roughly 52 per cent mortality rate when it spreads to humans.

“It's hard to handle multiple situations at once, and it's very hard to handle an emerging situation where you really have to try to figure out what's going on while you're already dealing with a problem.”

Take this year's ostrich saga, where CFIA officials spent months trying to cull a herd of BC ostriches that were infected with avian flu last Decem-

ber: the agency needed to figure out how to apply its avian flu protocols — which are designed for commercial poultry — on over 300 potentially deadly ostriches.

And it also had to deal with unprecedented public scrutiny, a storm of disinformation and hate stoked by far-right influencers supporting the farm and a months-long protest camp.

Threats are also wafting across the US border. Since President Donald Trump's inauguration, his administration has hacked away critical staff protecting the country's food supply.

Because Canada relies heavily on American farmers and processors for its food supply, those cuts will im-

pact Canada's food safety, Goodridge said.

"We don't think of food security as a national security issue, but it is," he said. The agency is worried enough about the threat that it created a dedicated taskforce to deal with it earlier this year.

The threats come as Ottawa is on a mission to cut the public service by up to 15 per cent in the coming years, with the CFIA predicting it will reduce costs by about $44.8 million by 2027, according to a ministerial transition booklet.

The 2026 federal budget requires the agency to reduce redundancies, including by reducing lab facilities and staff, while allocating about $118

million to the agency over the next five years to integrate AI into its work to increase international trade.

As the agency cuts back, the risks it's facing aren’t going anywhere.

“In a growing world, there are more mouths to feed, there are more animals out there, there's more movement, there are climate stresses or ecological stresses or emerging diseases, but the things that we're dealing with right now, some of them didn't exist, or we didn't know about them 30 years ago,” Weese said.

“We haven't dropped many things off the agenda, but we're continually adding things."

Feds toughen methane regulations, Alberta gets five extra years Natasha Bulowski Local Journalism Initiative Reporter

The federal government’s new methane regulations are a step in the right direction but extra flexibility for industry and provincial exceptions give cause for concern, climate experts warn.

It’s especially troubling that the new regulations will be undermined by the recent Alberta-Ottawa memorandum of understanding, which gives the province an extra five years to meet methane targets, said Amanda Bryant, senior analyst at the Calgarybased Pembina Institute, in a news release.

“This is a carve-out which, according to our modelling, could result in an additional 1.9 million tonnes of methane into the atmosphere, equivalent to 53 million tonnes of carbon dioxide,” she said. “That’s the same as the annual pollution from roughly half the cars on Canada’s roads.”

Alberta is responsible for the largest share of national emissions from its oil and gas sector. Methane — a potent greenhouse gas and powerful driver of global warming — mostly comes from fossil fuel extraction and production, often through accidental leaks, venting or burning excess gas. As the province is the country’s biggest oil and gas producer, the regulations would have the largest impact there.

Environment, Climate Change and Nature Minister Julie Dabrusin announced the new measures Tuesday afternoon at the British Columbia Institute of Technology in Vancouver. The regulations, which apply to landfills and oil and gas producers, are designed to achieve a 72 per cent reduction in methane from 2012 levels by the end of this decade.

Oil and gas producers have two ways to comply with the regulations, the minister said.

“They can follow a clear set of actions to stop intentional venting of emissions and fix leaks, or they can choose a performance-based pathway that uses continuous monitoring and allows them to design their own solutions, as long as they meet strong performance standards,” Dabrusin said at the announcement.

Major oil and gas companies in Canada have already pledged to achieve near-zero methane emissions by 2030, yet the proposed rules do not reflect that level of ambition, noted Aly Hyder Ali, oil and gas program manager at Environmental Defence, in a news release. “Furthermore, these rules will not come into effect until 2028, although the technology to reduce methane emissions is already readily available.”

From 2028 when the regulations take effect until 2040, the federal government estimates a reduction of 304 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions, while oil and gas production growth is only reduced by an estimated 0.2 per cent between now and 2035.

The federal government also estimated the net benefits of the regulations at $23.9 billion from 2028 to 2040 in avoided climate change impacts and improved health due to reducing air pollutant emissions.

Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment (CAPE) welcomed the changes, suggesting they will improve the health of Canadians, particularly those living near landfills or oil and gas operations.

But the group said these measures cannot obscure broader backsliding on climate policy.

“CAPE is concerned about ongoing policy uncertainty,” said Dr. Samantha Green, president of the association, in a news release. “The Alberta–Canada memorandum of understanding (MoU) effectively proposes to weaken or eliminate various key elements of Canada’s climate policy, while expanding fossil fuel infrastructure. This helps contextualize today’s an-

nouncement: it’s a positive step forward, but it takes place at a moment when Canada is taking several leaps backward on climate.”

Prime Minister Mark Carney and Dabrusin justified the Alberta MOU and its exemptions for the province — which caused waves among some BC Liberal MPs — because the federal government believes Alberta will now cooperate with industrial carbon pricing and strengthened methane regulations. It remains to be seen whether Alberta Premier Danielle Smith will follow through with the actions outlined in the MOU. Along with pausing the electric vehicle sales mandate and ending the consumer carbon tax, more recent actions, such as approving major LNG projects and incentivizing a new oil pipeline, will drive methane pollution and leakage, Green said.

The Parliamentary Budget Officer (PBO) and the Canadian Climate Institute say in separate analyses that Canada is on track to miss its climate targets under the current scenario and that doesn’t account for the EV sales mandate pause.

Dabrusin told reporters her legally mandated climate progress report would be published before the end of the year.

The Pathways Alliance oilsands lobby group did not respond to a request for comment about the new regulations.

Landfills are responsible for about 17 per cent of Canada’s methane emissions and the new regulations impose methane thresholds on certain landfills, methane monitoring and a prohibition on venting captured methane.

Fond memories keep Christmas spirit alive in our hearts Leslie Cholowsky Editor

This has been another wonderful year. It’s been a year of greater need, met by Flagstaff County residents with greater generosity as you continue to do time after time.

2025 was another year where we came to be grateful to our many volunteers and all that they do for us.

It felt like it had the potential to be a very political year, with not one but two federal elections, and one with interference from the longest ballot committee, but despite the opportunity, Flagstaff residents seemed to rise above any political bickering or backstabbing.

We took it in stride, as we do many things, and still did our duties as citizens and voted.

For me, 2025 flew by so fast I can barely remember what happened. I’m looking forward to the Year in Review just to remember what we did and try to figure

out how it all went by so fast.

In our region we have so much to be thankful for.

I want to tell our readers just how much we appreciate you. We also want to thank our contributors, from our wonderful correspondents to everyone who reaches out and shares a story or a photo with us. We are your newspaper, and we love hearing about and sharing your news.

We also truly appreciate those who advertise with us. Your patronage keeps us around; it allows us to keep telling local stories and covering local events.

We also appreciate everyone who volunteers their time and energy to make their community a special place. Your efforts are working, because I can’t think of a better place to live.

This year, after local elections, we have once again an entire group of forward thinking councils throughout the region, who will look to do the very best for their constituents over the next year, as many of them learn their roles for the first time and grow into the responsibilities.

And what we can do for them is provide our feedback, but in a constructive way, to help them on their journey.

Looking ahead to some time off for Christmas, I find my thoughts going back to when I was small.

I remember so many wonderful moments from past Christmases, as I’m sure we all do.

The following are letters sent to Santa Claus by local students. We typed up the copies and then passed them along to Jolly Ol’ Saint Nick himself.

Each format is slightly different depending on the class.

Some names were omitted because they were hard for the typist to read. But have no fear, Santa always knows.

Dear Santa, Santa I already have a Christmas list at my Mom’s house and my Dad’s house – just so you know, there are 50 most awesome ideas.

Walmart and Amazon are the best places for toys.

Tell your elves to check it out.

So I have been 1000 per cent good. That’s the Best Kid Award yet! My sister is on the naughty, naughty 34 per cent good. She just won’t share and is the biggest BOSS. I am five and I don’t need a Boss. I can do my own stuff when I want....

Since I have been 1000 per cent awesome and good this year I would like a lap Boo Boo. It has every colour and a box inside.

This is very important, I have been waiting for one for almost 57 years.... I have

been very patient waiting – but am getting tired, so please bring.

Santa Mom really wants an Oilers jersey – she jumps up and down and cheers for them everywhere and maybe also bring Oilers boots. She could show them off everywhere in town, and be the loudest OILER shouter!

Daddy needs more beef jerky, he eats it every morning for breakfast. My sister would like 9-year-old stuff – bring her a 8-7 sized stuff.

No clothes, but maybe a bathing suit would work.

Nana has everything in the world. She just buys it all but maybe bring a fancy dress so she can look nice at a party. Papa Vern just needs new gonchies. He has it on the top of his list.

He’s out of them right now…. This is very important!

Santa I live in Sedgewick and Daysland.

Bring presents to both houses and also to my Nana’s house too!

Mom’s going to make cookies and she actually knows how to make them, so don’t be afraid to try one.

Dear Santa, Thanks for the combine you gave my brother last year and the big loader you gave me – Just to let you know the two wheel loader – the bucket fell off, so now I can’t feed my cows with that. I have to use my skid steer and silage wagon.

Santa, I have been pretty good. I help with my brothers - all day Miles is mean to Boden – really the problem is he doesn’t know the rules. So I always help with the RULES....

On the farm I help drive the quad when we are fencing, with the wire hanging on. I chase cows and say “Hurra” really loud and “Cow boss” - that really works.

I feed chickens and pick eggs. It’s a lot of work to be a farm kid. The best part is going to watch the cows sell. You get 100 bucks for a two-colored cow now. The black ones are worth more - they are worth 250 bucks!!!

Dad and Grandpa like that!

Santa, I have been so-so busy cause now I have to go to school - so I’m just soso good.

Santa please bring me a new quad that I could drive around the yard every morning when I don’t have school.

Santa, Mom would love a robot that could make coffee, then I wouldn’t have to make 5 scoop coffee, or Dad either.

Dad wants a new TV, the one downstairs is pretty old. Boden wants a yellow combine. Miles wants his own toys instead of our old ones.

Gramma Pip really

wants a new marker, so she can write everything about the farm - how many cows and how much money the grey, red, and black cows go for at the auction. Papa Darrel needs a new quad too.

My other Gramma and Grampa need a new lawn mower – they like my mom’s new lawn mower.

Gramma Buch wants a new watering can and Papa Buch really, really wants a new quad too…. Need it to chase cows – they are all wild.

Santa, I live North. My house is white with a brown roof. I live super close to Gramma Pip, maybe 30 minutes away.

My cousins gave us cookies for you Santa. They taste pretty good.

Santa don’t worry about my dog cause he just likes to sleep all night.

Santa, I just remembered, bring me a popcorn maker, so I can make my own, whenever I want, and sprinkle chocolate and sprinkles on top.

Santa, I would really like to know how you get down the chimney????

I really try to be good....

Last night I fed the piggies, I’m usually too scared to go in the pig pen, but last night I just went straight in – no problems!

I be really good when we are camping! And this morning I made my bed!

This year Santa, I would like a little mower that you can use inside or outside – it has little balls in it.

Santa, bring my sisters girl stuff – dolls, smelly stuff.

Santa, my Mom would like a bridle and a saddle and a horse.

Daddy needs more drill batteries.

Grandma Marg would like a bridle, a saddle and a horse too!

Grampa Roggie – really likes cookies! Send the ones in a box with directions so Gramma can make them for him!

Santa, I live in the country by a neighbor Dorn and he has lots of trees and we live right next to him.

Santa, my Mom is kinda busy, but she will get the

cookies made or maybe Grandma will.

Santa, I’ve noticed that you bring lots of presents to my Grandma and Grandpa’s house but they are all for us kids, Mom and Dad only get candy.

So thanks for all the gifts!

I was really looking all over and didn’t see it. I go there every year to visit you and Mrs. Clause. I really like the advent calendars she gives us.

I make my bed everyday – never miss a day!! I dress fast on a school day.

I always eat my lunch fast.

This year Santa, my sister wants a Princess playdough kit.

I really would like a new doll bottle. I got my favourite doll Jacob when I was three and I’m five years old now, so Jacob is five months old and he really needs a new bottle.

My Pa John really needs a new pair of work gloves as he works really hard fixing all the combines – he fixes everyday and always tears and loses his gloves – maybe, Santa send three pairs.

Jerry Pa needs a new travel ticket. She loves stars and travelling, so maybe to Mexico or Camrose.

Grandpa, my mom’s

dad, needs oven mitts.

He makes really good chili.

My Mom really wants a calendar – she has too many places to go!

Daddy needs a new hat – his fell in the lagoon, we couldn’t wash the smell out. So this, is a very, very important gift!

Santa, don’t worry when you come to my house. I don’t have any dogs that bite, just one lazy cat that looks out the window all day. He’d probably appreciate a gift of new catnip.

My Mom makes the chocolate chip cookies.

She won’t let Daddy eat them all so you will still get one.

and Dad can’t even believe how good I am!

To be good, I stay in the lines when I colour – just so you know the boys in my class don’t stay in the lines when they colour!

I also ate steak when I didn’t like it and I put my dirty clothes in the laundry basket, but Mom and Dad just throw theirs down the stairs on the floor, so Santa please put me on the top of the good list!

Since I’ve been so good all year, I’m hoping for a tennis racket and some new mittens.

Kailer has just been kinda good, as he sometimes hits and punches, but he would like a new bed because we don’t have a stand for his mattress.

Since last Christmas Santa, we have a new baby, three months old, just send chew toys as he has a bad habit of chewing his thumb.

Santa remember I live in Sedgewick, just go that way, then turn at the grocery store, to the big hill, go straight and then left.

Dear Santa, How are the reindeer?

I was watching a show here and elf turned into a human and a tiger hurt one of the reindeer.

It was kinda a scary show, but Mom allowed us to watch it, even Iver was allowed to watch it.

Santa, me and my sister sometimes fight because my sister doesn’t ever want to do my ideas. Sometimes we fight everyday but kinda not that often.

Every time I go with Dad I’m good, but there is the odd time that I don’t want to work, I just want to stay in the truck. I’m tired of work, work, work….

So I would say I’m eight per cent good. So now that you know I’ve been SO good, please send me a toy reindeer that walks, please don’t forget the batteries.

My sister wants a Barbie Doll with a baby and some high heels.

Iver needs something to bounce him. Santa, he’s a good baby, but he does pull hair and fights my Mom on going to bed.

Santa, please bring my Mom a house cleaner, like a secret fairy that would just appear and magically clean the house.

Then we wouldn’t have to pick up our toys.

Daddy only likes to farm, so send farm parts for Bumble Bee and the most parts for the green combines.

Gramma Jackie wants a collar to tie up Oakley.

Oakley gets into too much trouble.

Santa, I live in a farm

house with horses and buffalo and two dogs.

Santa use the chimney, cause Charlie will jump on you. He doesn’t bite!

Just so you have a plan – we have a small chimney.

Grandma Jackie will be making cookies – she already made them – they are a little hard, but not too bad.

Dear Santa, How’s the weather?

Hope it doesn’t snow too bad on Christmas for you to fly! Do you have special night vision goggles to wear?

Santa, I have been notso-bad this year. For five days I have been so-greatgood!

In five days I have played with my Dad, he likes to play Monster trucks and cars. I have also fed the chickens corn and I watered the trees and the garden.

Since I’ve been not so bad, could I please have a monster truck, race cars and pretend trucks.

Just so you know, I love you!

Santa, Mom really wants two bracelets to wear to show my Daddy.

Daddy would like two golden necklaces. That would make him super special.

My sister would love pretend horses and pretend dogs.

Uncle Dave needs a clock, cause he doesn’t know what time to wake up.

Melissa would love a brand-new phone with butterflies on it. She likes to phone everyone.

Santa remember to change my address, I used to live in Ontario, 663459213 km away, but I drove and drove and

drove, 150 hours to live in Alberta.

My house is grey and we have three dogs. Santa don’t go near their face, they might bite. They do like dog treats…

If it’s only the elves are they getting all the toys made?

I saw some good toys in the toy shop in Killam.

There were tractors and watches – do the elves make those toys?

Santa, there has been lots of fighting with my sister – and the real problem is I started it!

I’ll be good next year!

This year I would like a little truck and a little trailer.

My sister would like a Barbie camper. Mom would really like a purple computer so she can buy a little TV from the computer. That’s how it works.

Daddy wants a big hammer and a huge screwdriver to work with his construction friends.

She makes chocolate cookies with six cups of sugar – so they are really

Dear Santa, I do know that your reindeer like carrots so I’m going to leave carrots for them.

Probably only two to three carrots though because I don’t want them to get a sore tummy. I do think they get hungry from flying in the air, that sleigh of yours is very heavy for all the presents for all the people of the world.

I want to know Santa does it always snow at the north pole or is it warm there?

I really don’t know how you're going to get through our chimney. I think maybe he has some magic to get all the way through the chimney and back up again.

I really want to know how late Santa has to stay up to get all those presents delivered to everyone.

For Santa I will leave cookies. I also know that all the elves make presents but we don’t leave them anything to eat. My sister told me that if there are any cookies or food that Santa doesn’t like he takes it back for the elves to eat.

I think my mom would really like it if i made her something for Christmas, but I have to think about it, maybe a necklace or a bracelet would be nice.

According to a 2025 report from the Centre for the Study of Global Christianity at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, there are roughly 2.6 billion Christians worldwide, a figure that undoubtedly contributes to the popularity of Christmas. Christianity continues to have the most adherents of any religion in the world, and the Christian population is expected to top three billion before 2050.

Christians bring unique cultural touches to their Christmas celebrations each year. Celebrations vary widely, and here’s a look at some notable Christmas traditions across the globe.

Yule Goat The Yule Goat is a Christmas tradition in Sweden.

The goat is believed to be an invisible spirit that ensures that Yule preparations are done correctly. A popular theory connects the goat to the Norse god Thor, who rode a chariot pulled by two goats.

100 Years Ago This Month: Historical events from December 1925 The month of December has been home to many historical events over the years. Here’s a look at some that helped to shape the world in December 1925.

• The Farmer-Labour Party is dissolved just two hours after its formation in Japan on December 1. The dissolution was ordered by the Japanese government, which accused the party of harbouring a secret communist agenda.

• The border delineating Northern Ireland and Ireland is established on December 3 when representatives of both countries sign the Northern Irish Border Agreement.

• The George Gershwin composition “Concerto in F” is performed for the first time on December 3.

The performance in New York’s Carnegie Hall is conducted by Walter Damrosch and features Gershwin on piano.

• A counterfeiting scheme is uncovered by the Banco de Portugal on December 4. An alert bank teller tips off the bank, which ultimately discovers that wealthy entrepreneur Arthur Virgílio Alves Reis is the mastermind behind the scheme. Reis was eventually sentenced to 20 years in prison.

• The Pottsville Maroons defeat the Chicago Cardinals in front of 6,000 fans on December 6 in a game the press depicted as the championship of the National Football League.

• Russian Orthodox bishop Peter of Krutitsy is arrested on December 9.

Peter is charged with conspiring with Russian emigres in the west. Peter is ultimately executed by shooting on October 10, 1937.

• George Bernard Shaw is awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature on December 10.

• Karam Chand and Kartari Chand tie the knot in India on December 11. The Chand’s marriage lasts 90 years and 291 days, and is the longest marriage recorded. Karam Chand passed away in 2016 and Kartari in 2019.

• Communist politician

Benjamin Gitlow is pardoned by New York Governor Al Smith on December 11. Gitlow was convicted for publishing a manifesto calling for the overthrow of the U.S. government, which Governor Smith characterized as a “political crime” upon issuing his pardon.

• The Qaja dynasty, which had ruled Iran since 1789, comes to an end on December 12 when the country’s Parliament declares General Reza Khan Pahlavi Prime Minister and installs him as Shah of Iran.

• The Fascist government in Italy signs a secret pact with Britain on December 14. The pact is designed to reinforce Italian dominance in Ethiopia.

• The national service fraternity Alpha Phi Omega is founded at Lafayette College in Pennsylvania on December 16.

• U.S. Army Colonel Billy Mitchell is convicted on

eight charges of insubordination on December 17.

Mitchell was critical of military leaders for investing in battleships and had argued for greater investment in air-based defenses.

• Reichstag President Paul Löbe speaks out in favor of partial prohibition in Germany on December 19.

• George Edwin Taylor passes away on December 23 at the age of 68. Taylor was the first African American presidential candidate, running for the highest office in the United States as nominee of the National Negro Liberty Party in 1904.

• Law No. 2263 is passed by the Italian parliament on December 24. The law states that the decisions of Prime Minister Benito Mussolini and his government were not subject to legislative review and could only be overruled by order of King Victor Emmanuel III. • A Christmas story pub-

lished in the London newspaper The Evening News on December 24 identifies a children’s character as “Winnie-thePooh” for the first time.

The character had previously been referred to as “Edward” in a poem published in Punch magazine in 1924.

• The Turkish government passes a law identifying the Gregorian calendar as the official calendar for all government affairs on December 26. The use of the Islamic calendar in government affairs also is banned.

• The Japan Sumo Association is founded on December 28.

• The first attempt at a global New Year’s celebration is made via international radio on December 31. Musical entertainment and greetings from various consuls general from an assortment of foreign countries are sent from New York.

Tips to engage your faith more during the holiday season Shopping is a big part of the holiday season, and data regarding retail sales bears that out.

According to the National Retail Federation, roughly 19 percent of total retail sales during a five-year period beginning in 2019 occurred between November and December.

NRF data is a testament to how much shopping now factors into the holiday season.

But millions aspire to more fully engage their faith over the final month of the year.

Indeed, religious holidays like Chanukah and Christmas mark a perfect time for the faithful to place a greater emphasis on their faith.

That goal can be accomplished in a number of ways.

• Read scripture each day. Many adults’ first interactions with their faith as youngsters were reading stories about the foundations of their religions with their parents, religious instructors or even on their own. Those stories might have been kidfriendly adaptations of notable stories found in the sacred writings of various faiths, including Christianity, Islam and Judaism. This holiday season adults can engage their faith more fully by committing time each day to reading scripture. If time is short, commuters can even listen to audio versions of sacred writings on their way to and from work.

• Volunteer at your local house of worship.

Houses of worship recognize the holiday season is a special time of year. But they also recognize that the less fortunate might be particularly needy during this time of year, and many churches, synagogues, temples,

and other houses of worship host holiday season food, clothing and toy drives, as well as additional events, in an effort to ensure everyone gets what they need. Volunteering to lend a hand during such events can be a great way to engage more fully with your faith.

• Attend services.

The hectic pace of the holiday season is well-

known, and it can be hard to make it to daily or weekly services. But such services can be just what people need to re-

connect with their faith during the holiday season. If it’s been awhile since you were a regular attendee at church

services, commit to regular attendance throughout the month of December.

The holiday season is

an undeniably commercial time of year. But it also marks a great time to reconnect with one’s faith.

So, what’s the deal with Boxing Day anyway?

Christmas Day is a big event on the calendar each year. Indeed, December 25 is a day when family, faith and festivities converge for billions of people across the globe.

The festive atmosphere of Christmas Day might leave many people a little tired come December 26, but Canadians know the party isn’t over upon going to bed on Christmas night.

That’s because Boxing Day is celebrated in Canada and elsewhere, including the United Kingdom, on December 26.

What is Boxing Day? Christmas Day has long been a day to gather with friends and family, but that wasn’t necessarily possible for everyone. The working class and servants working in wealthy households in the United Kingdom and other locales in the British Commonwealth typically worked on Christmas Day. But the day after Christmas was customarily a day off from work for such individuals. According to Britannica, it was customary for the upper classes in Great Britain and the Commonwealth countries to present the poor and working classes with presents on the day after Christmas, which came to be known as Boxing Day. Is Boxing Day an official holiday? oxing Day is a popular holiday, but it’s not a given that workers will have the day off. According to StatutoryHolidays.com, Boxing Day is a statutory holiday only in Ontario. It’s also a statutory holiday for federally regulated workers and banks across Canada. Various provinces recognize Boxing Day as a public

holiday, and workers living in those areas tend to get the day off, even if it’s not technically mandatory for employers to close for the day.

Is Boxing Day still celebrated in the same way it used to be?

Few twenty-first century households have servants, so the Boxing Day of modern times is not all that similar to the holiday celebrated in the past. However, Boxing Day remains a festive day on the calendar.

Many people take advantage of retailers’ sales and go shopping on Boxing Day, while countless others spend the day watching various sporting events. The Premier League, which is the highest level of the English football league system and among the most competitive leagues across the globe, typically schedules a full slate of matches on Boxing Day. However, that tradition is not necessarily a given in 2025, as the league announced it would move the games to December 27 while leaving room for teams to move fixtures to Boxing Day to accommo-

date broadcasting demands. Fans may need to be patient and wait and see if they can spend Boxing Day with the Premier League.

If there’s no Premier League, Canadian sports fans can still spend the day watching

the World Juniors Ice Hockey Championship, which begins its roughly month-long run on Boxing Day. Boxing Day is steeped in tradition and remains a fun and festive day on many Canadians’ calendars.

Kwanzaa celebrations bring communities together December is brimming with festive holidays designed to celebrate family, friends and good fortune. While Christmas and Chanukah may dominate the holiday landscape this time of year, African American and PanAfrican cultures observe a weeklong celebration known as Kwanzaa from December 26 to January 1.

Kwanzaa is designed to affirm African family and social values. It is primarily celebrated in the United States and is not a religious holiday, setting it apart from events like Christmas and Chanukah. The name of the holiday and the celebration were the brainchild of Maulana Karenga, a professor of Africana studies at California State University, Long Beach. Karenga borrowed the word “kwanza,” meaning “first,” from the Swahili phrase “matunda ya kwanza.” He added an extra letter “a” to the word to make it a sevenletter word to coordinate with the seven children present at an early Kwanzaa celebration in the mid1960s, as well as the seven principles of the holiday, according to Britan-

nica. The notion of the holiday is rooted in first fruit celebrations, which are found in cultures throughout Africa both in ancient and modern times.

The values that are the tenets of this festival include Umoja (Unity), Kujichagulia (Self-Determination), Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility), Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics), Nia (Purpose), Kuumba (Creativity), and Imani (Faith).

These principles were drawn from the values found throughout Africa.

Each day of the celebration is dedicated to one of the seven principles.

Seven symbols embody the holiday, including fruits, vegetables and nuts; a straw mat; a candleholder; ears of corn; gifts; a communal unity cup; and seven candles in the colors of red, green and black. Families come together to light one of the candles in the kinara (candleholder) each day, and discuss the day’s principle.

On December 31, participants join in a community feast, and many people wear traditional African clothing.

Roast beef in an air fryer? You bet!

Until you’ve tried it, you won’t believe how well a roast can come out in the air fryer. It's a deliciously tender and juicy roast with a beautifully caramelized crust, and best of all, it takes minimal work.

Air frying can produce meals that call to mind the familiar flavors of fried foods and do so in a far healthier way.

This holiday season, hosts can look to air frying as a means to crafting flavourful meals without a lot of the negatives of traditional frying. That’s even possible with traditional family staples like roast beef. With that in mind, hosts can try their hands at this recipe for air-fried “Roast Beef” courtesy of Lines+Angles.

Roast Beef Makes 4 to 6 servings 2-pound beef roast, trimmed (best air fryer choices are chuck roast, arm roast, sirloin roast and prime rib roast) 2 tablespoons olive oil Flaked sea salt Freshly ground mixed peppercorns

3. Spritz air fryer basket with cooking spray.

Place beef roast in basket and cook for 45 minutes for medium-rare; cook for additional five-minute intervals for more well-done meat.

Transform a store-bought cheesecake into a multitude of tiny and tasty mini desserts Cheesecake is a very popular dessert, but sometimes an entire wedge can feel like a little too much, especially after a big meal.

One ingenious idea is to take one large cheesecake, and create many smaller desserts. It’s even easier to start out with a store-bought version.

Using a biscuit cutter, usually around 1.5 to 2” in diameter, cut three quarters of the cake into small rounds, all the way down to the graham cracker base. You can lightly grease the inside of your cutter to make it easier.

Cut as many rounds as you are able, and put the rest of the cake aside (do not throw it out!)

To the tops of the individual cut outs, add whatever topping you prefer, whether that be fresh fruit and whipped cream, or chopped pistachios, as are shown here.

Now take the rest of the cake and put it in a bowl all together. You can add a very small amount of heavy cream to keep them all together, and even a dollop of your favourite jam to add a fruity flavour. You’re looking for a good consistency that will stay together into a ball.

Use a cookie scoop to make balls, then pop them in the fridge to firm them up for the next step.

Melt white (or any) chocolate with a little shortening, and, sticking a toothpick into

each ball, use it to dip the cooled cheesecake balls into the chocolate.

Sprinkle some

sparkling sugar or tiny decorations on the dipped balls, or leave them plain for a delicious treat.
