As another Christmas quickly approaches, choose kindness

I can’t believe it’s already the last issue of 2022. In some ways this year has gone impossibly fast, and in others, agonizingly slow.

It’s been a very weird time to live through, and I’m not sorry to wave goodbye to this year.

Christmas is always a time of year where The Community Press takes advantage of the holiday to take a week off from publication, and it’s a welcome break after a busy fall.

We are so grateful to each and every reader, subscriber, and especially to our advertisers.

We try to stay relevant, especially in the face of social media that has proven time and time again to be an inefficient and unreliable method of getting news out.

I’m grateful for the support I receive in the region, and for those who send me news tips and story ideas, and those who submit photos and information about events.

I couldn’t do it without the support from the team here in our office, and the team of loyal readers and community members in Flagstaff County.

I can’t imagine living anywhere else, this is such a friendly community, and there’s just so much here to take advantage of.

We’re very lucky to have the amazing amenities that we do, there’s really so much to do, and so many things to be a part of.

Christmas is always a time of giving, and where I live, and the people who live here, never fail to make me proud.

I’m consistently blown away by the funds we raise

at The Community Press from our readers for the Flagstaff Christmas Sharing ‘Fill the Tree’ campaign.

And that’s just one small part of the giving that we hear about and report on.

And the support, and the kindness.

In a world that seems very cold and violent outside our borders, I feel very fortunate to be a Canadian, an Albertan, and a Flagstaff County resident.

My wish for everyone this year is that you get the opportunity to do a random act of kindness for someone else. It’s the most marvellous feeling; it’s addictive, and there’s nothing that makes you feel better.

‘Fill the Tree’ surpasses $10k

The Community Pressʼs ʻFill the Treeʼ campaign has been running for over 20 years now. It started as a modest $5-per-name fundraiser to help the Flagstaff Christmas Sharing program, which delivers hampers to those less fortunate at Christmastime. In recent years, donation numbers have begun to balloon, specifically last year when over $7,000 came in during the campaign. This year, however, exceeded all expectations again as an incredible $10,500 was donated by our generous readers. This fundraiser was promoted entirely through the newspaper and not social media this year, yet again proving what we already knew - most people in Flagstaff read the paper. All four of our Caribou Publishing papers hosted a local ʻFill the Treeʼ campaign this year, raising over $23,000 in total. All we can say is thank you. Whether you gave us the last coin or bill in your wallet or mailed in a large cheque, you made a difference. We can’t thank you enough.” The Community Press Killam office will accept non-perishable Food Bank donations throughout the rest of the year beginning in January. “While people go above and beyond at Christmastime, we do have to remember that for some, the Food Bank is a year-round necessity. Please feel free to drop off items at our office anytime we’re open and we’ll make sure it goes to the right place,” Anderson said. From all of us at CP, thanks for this incredible generosity.

Santa I really, really want Magic Mixies don’t forget the wand and the special potion that’s very important.

Santa, please bring my Mom everything sloth maybe sloth PJ’s because we kids make her tired. That’s why Moms need extra sleep and also why they send us to the babysitter.

Bring Dad - scary DVD’s.

Bad Charlie wants a new Kirby game - if he is not getting coal, bring him Kirby’s Dream Buffet and tell him to be better next year.

Ben likes Luigi - bring him a plush toy.

Bring Trish a kitty toy that moves its tail around and is orange.

She has four cats, so bring cat food, too.

Santa, I live in Sedgewick in a brown house with the top black. Fly over all the countries until you see a curve this way, my house is beside the white house that was Charlie’s old teacher.

Dear Santa: Hi! Just to let you know I just want robot siren heads - they look kinda scary but I’s not scared of them. But in real life I would be scared of them and monsters and just a little scared of the dark - but send robot siren heads anyways I’ll just run from them, I’m a fast runner.

So this year I have been so good, at least 30% good and 2% not so good - there was some fighting, not listening to Mom, and I really don’t eat stew.

I wish I could just eat chicken nuggets every day.

Santa, my Mom would love a pillow that is pink - she needs a good night’s sleep she’s just tired.

Daddy would like a new shirt that s green so he could wear it on a vacation to Japan. He wants to go to a hotel and sleep too. Being a parent, I guess, is hard work.

Santa - to get to my house go that way - just half an hour if you see 15 houses then that’s a ‘village’ - then stop by a black house - there’s a tree right beside the window and then the door. Come on in.

The problem is we share a bedroom, and my brother can be slightly annoying - and that can make me bossy.

Dear Santa: How do you make so many toys? Can you make all the toys that are at Walmart? I especially like doll houses.

This year I have been sometimes good.

I try not to fight with my sister but she does sometimes take my stuff! Sometimes I help Mom clean, but mostly that’s her job.

Sometimes I feed Panda and Sniffy Flower Bye - these are our pigs. They are my Mom’s friends - she really likes them!

Santa this year I’m wishing for an i-Pad. I’d play on it all day long until bedtime.

Santa this year my Mom would love some new earrings with really big diamonds - she can wear them to feed her friends the potbellied pigs!

Daddy would like a new belt.

When did lights become popular?

Christmas lights are now everywhere come the holiday season.

Private homeowners tend to hang the holiday lights outside their homes shortly after Remembrance Day and

keep them up through New Year's Day. Though it might seem like a tradition without a deep history, decorating a Christmas tree with electric lights can be traced all the way back to the

nineteenth century.

In 1882, Edward Johnson, who was a friend and colleague of the man who invented light bulbs, Thomas Edison, replaced candles, which had traditionally been used to briefly light Christmas trees, with light bulbs.

But at the time of Johnson's innovation, the high cost and relative infancy of light bulbs ensured the idea did not catch on.

Though United States President Grover Cleveland used electric lights to illuminate a Christmas tree in the White House in 1895, it would be another eight years before General Electric would begin selling Christmas light kits.

Those kits cost $12 in 1903, which equates to

several hundred dollars today.

The first outdoor Christmas light shows started to become popular in the 1920s, and this is the same time when commercial sales of Christmas lights picked up.

In the 1960s, GE's decision to begin manufacturing Christmas lights overseas helped reduce the price of outdoor lights even further, thus paving the way for the tradition of decorating home exteriors with string lights during the holiday season to take a firm hold.

That tradition remains wildly popular today, especially with the continued advancements in LED technologies, which significantly reduces the electrical cost as well as the amount of heat generated, reducing fire risk.

Kurek: Hope and perspective during the holidays Damien Kurek MP - Battle RiverCrowfoot The story of Jesus's birth reminds us of the hope, peace, and joy which can restore our faith amid even the most difficult of circumstances. This year, this message is even more important as many face challenges.

Canada’s economic and inflationary situation has left a lot of folks struggling financially; the illegal invasion of Ukraine has brought war closer to home for the first time in many of our lifetimes; the famine in many places; political division about any number of subjects; and instability around the world have all been significant challenges this past year.

Yet in the midst of these challenges, the message of hope still rings true. We have persevered throughout our history as a nation because we stood together, driving a path forward toward a better tomorrow. Crises of different varieties, from war to political division to recession have come and gone, but Canada and its people have persevered. The story of Christmas and the legacy of faith in Canada’s story is significant and lays a strong foundation for our nation’s future.

As your Member of Parliament, I have seen firsthand the generosity and charitable nature of those in east-central Alberta. I rose in the House of Commons a few weeks ago to address the need for anyone who can to support local food banks or other charitable initiatives that aim to help the most vulnerable among us. This is more important as many folks are feeling the effects of our economic challenges, and in many cases are unable to be as generous as in years past. I would encourage anyone who can to donate even the smallest amount. For someone less fortunate, down the street or across the world, it can mean the difference between having a merry Christmas or going hungry.

Regardless of where someone is at, whether they enter the holidays

with high prospects or they are facing challenges, it is the story of Jesus’ birth and resurrection that provides the hope needed in the midst of every circumstance. In the Gospel of John Chapter 14, verse 27 Jesus says: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” Christmas is the perfect occasion to be reminded that there is hope.

And finally, I pass along my best Christmas wishes to those who face challenging circumstances around Christmas, like the men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces who won't be with their families due to deployment, as well as our front-line workers whose work doesn't stop, and those who have faced loss and may be alone over the holidays.

Bake a batch of sweet and delightful sugar cookies (MCC) Ingredients: 1 cup (2 sticks) butter (no substitutions), softened 1/2 cup sugar 1 large egg 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 3 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt Frosting (optional) Coarse sugar crystals, silver dragees, holiday decors (optional decorations) 1. Preheat oven to 350 F. In large bowl, with mixer on low speed, beat butter and sugar until blended.

Increase speed to high; beat until light and creamy.

On low speed, beat in egg and vanilla. Beat in flour, baking powder and salt until blended.

2. Divide dough into 4 equal pieces; flatten each piece into a disk. Wrap each disk with plastic wrap and refrigerate 1 hour or until dough is firm enough to roll. (Or place dough in freezer 30 minutes.)

3. On a lightly floured surface with a floured rolling pin, roll 1 piece of dough 1/8 inch thick. With floured 3-inch to 4-inch cookie cutters, cut dough

into as many cookies as possible; wrap and refrigerate trimmings. Place cookies, 1 inch apart, on ungreased large cookie sheet.

4. Bake cookies 10 to 12 minutes or until lightly browned. Transfer cookies to wire rack to cool. Repeat with remaining dough and trimmings.

Spirited Hot Chocolate Ingredients: 1/2 cup (125 mL) cocoa 1/4 cup (50 mL) sugar 1/8 tsp (0.5 mL) salt 4 cups (1 L) homo milk 3/4 cup (175 mL) coffee liqueur 3/4 cup (175 mL) hazelnut liqueur 1 cup (250 mL) whipping cream, whipped Grated chocolate In a saucepan, whisk together cocoa, sugar and salt until blended.

Gradually whisk in 1/2 cup (125 mL) milk until smooth.

Slowly pour in remaining 3 1/2 cups (875 mL) milk, whisking until blended.

Cook over medium heat, whisking frequently, until mixture comes to a simmer. Simmer gently for 1 minute.

Remove from heat and stir in coffee liqueur and hazelnut liqueur.

Whipped Shortbread

Ladle into cups or heavy goblets.

Top each serving with a dollop of whipped cream and sprinkle with chocolate. Serve immediately.

Serves 6.

Cook’s Note: When pouring the hot chocolate mixture into goblets, place a metal spoon in goblet to prevent it from cracking.

Ingredients: 1 cup (250 mL) butter, softened 1/2 cup (125 mL) icing sugar 1/2 cup (125 mL) cornstarch 1 1/4 cups (300 mL) flour Candied red or green cherry pieces Using medium speed of an electric mixer, beat butter until creamy.

Add icing sugar and beat until fluffy.

Add cornstarch and flour and beat just until blended.

Drop small spoonfuls of dough 2 inches (5 cm) apart onto ungreased cookie sheets.

Press a piece of candied cherry into center of each unbaked cookie.

Bake at 350ºF (180ºC) for 12 - 15 minutes. Do not overbake.

Remove from cookie sheets and cool on racks.

May be frozen. Makes 3 dozen cookies.

Daysland School Christmas Concert fun from start to finish The Daysland Elementary School Concert, held on Thursday, Dec. 8, was entertaining from start to finish.

There were some fresh new songs, and a lot of bobbing and swaying. It was obvious that every class, who were dressed up in their best, put a lot of time and effort into the production. Four unique holiday drinks to try this year when hosting family Christmas is the season of happiness, sharing gifts, and bringing families together. For some, Christmas celebration is a family tradition that bonds them closer. The celebrations generate lifelong memories as they give us something to look forward to, and they can help shape children’s personalities.

Hosting a Christmas dinner could be challenging as you must consider many things. Sure, cocktails and wine will flow freely during the day, but what about the children and nondrinkers? They deserve some festive drinks with the same kind of passion and whimsy.

Strawberry Hot Chocolate There’s no better way to enjoy the day than with the smell of hot chocolate.

Chocolate’s appeal comes from its rich, chocolatey aromas, as well as the pleasant recollections of youth evoked by such smells. And with strawberries added to it, it could be the best homemade recipe for you.

All you need is strawberries puree; mix it with some milk and white chocolate on low heat. Wait until the chocolate is fully melted, and you are ready to enjoy this delicious hot chocolate drink! You can always add more strawberries, if you want to.

Sugar Cookie Coffee Everyone loves cookies.

Cookies are like a delicious, crunchy, chewy canvas waiting to be painted with whatever you can think of.

This drink is suitable as the combination of cookie and coffee is just perfect – not too strong and not too sweet.

You simply need to brew the coffee with any coffee machine and prepare the creamer on the stovetop.

Combine white chocolate chips, vanilla syrup, and almond extract. The creamer formula can be quadrupled, halved, quartered, and so on, giving it a lot of versatility. Stir frequently until the white chocolate chips have melted.

Pour the coffee in a cup, add the sugar cookie, and you are good to go. You can always top it with whipped cream and a dash of cinnamon to add to that Christmas vibe. It’s a terrific beverage to make for a large group at a holiday gathering.

Gingerbread Latte Nothing beats the smell

of ginger during Christmas. Wafting in the scent of gingerbread while going past a kitchen or market says “holidays” like nothing else. Enjoy this sweet and creamy gingerbread latte with spices and whipped cream. You can also have it with or without an espresso shot.

Combine ground ginger, cinnamon, ground nutmeg, sugar, and vanilla extract in a bowl. Together with some milk, heat the mixture until the sugar dissolves. Pour in a cup and top with whipped cream and a mini gingerbread man to serve.

If you prefer some espresso, just add the shots according to your preference.

Sweet Adeline It’s not difficult to make a delicious tea drink, and

Sweet Adeline is a great example. On those cold winter evenings when you’re confined inside, this drink recipe is warm, cozy, and a treat. To make this drink, which is made with fresh pomegranate juice and homemade cinnamon syrup, you will need black tea with a spiced orange blend, hot water, and a cinnamon stick.

Holly and Mistletoe steeped with Christmas tradition going back centuries "Oh, by gosh, by golly it's time for mistletoe and holly. Tasty pheasants, Christmas presents, countrysides covered in snow."

As exemplified by this holiday hit by Henry Sanicola, Frank Sinatra, and Dok Stanford, holly and mistletoe are an integral part of holiday imagery and tradition.

Holly is used to adorn a home in green and red finery alongside evergreen boughs and wreaths.

In addition, it has become customary to hang a bouquet of mistletoe under which people are encouraged to share a holiday kiss.

While these elements of celebrations are now incorporated into many of the secular and religious components of Christmas, they have very different origins.

Holly has been used since the days of the early Pagans as a decoration for midwinter festivities, when it was brought into homes to keep evil spirits away.

The ancient Romans also believed that holly prickles drove away evil spirits, and it held a place of honor at December festivals dedicated to the god Saturn.

To avoid persecution during the Roman pagan Saturnalia festival, early Christians would participate in the tradition of hanging evil-repelling holly on their homes to appear like the masses.

Eventually as the number of Christians

grew, the tradition became less of a pagan one and more associated with Christians and Christmas.

Some people have inferred that holly and its prickly edges is symbolic of the crown of thorns Jesus wore at his crucifixion, with the red berries representing blood.

Mistletoe was once held sacred by the Norse, Celtic Druids and North American Indians.

It is actually a parasitic plant that grows on a wide range of host trees.

Heavy infestation can dwarf the growth and kill these trees.

In cultures across preChristian Europe, mistletoe was seen as a representation of divine male essence (and thus romance, fertility and vitality).

Homeowners who hang mistletoe and holly around their homes during the holi-

day season should be mindful of pets and youngsters around the plants.

Mistletoe and holly are considered to be moderately to severely toxic, and ingesting the leaves could be dangerous.

Therefore, keep these plants away from curi-

ous hands. Mistletoe is commonly hung up high, which should make it less problematic, but holly should be hung high as well.

Now largely associated with Christmas celebrations, holly and mistletoe were once part of pagan rituals and ancient superstitions.

Macadamia Cranberry Squares Bring a taste of the islands to your home with our Macadamia Cranberry Squares.

Ingredients: 2 cups (500 mL) flour 1/4 cup (50 mL) sugar 3/4 cup (175 mL) butter, chilled and cubed 1 cup (250 mL) packed golden brown sugar 1/3 cup (75 mL) butter 1/4 cup (50 mL) whipping cream 1/4 cup (50 mL) white corn syrup 2 tbsp (25 mL) mapleflavoured pancake syrup 1 cup (250 mL) coarsely chopped salted roasted macadamia nuts 1 cup (250 mL) dried cranberries Line a 9x13 inch (23x33 cm) baking pan with nonstick foil, leaving a 2 inch (5 cm) overhang.

To prepare crust, place flour and sugar in a food processor; process until combined.

Add chilled butter and process, using an on/off motion, until mixture forms coarse crumbs.

Press mixture into prepared pan.

Bake at 350ºF (180ºC) for 20 minutes or until light golden.

Meanwhile, to prepare topping, combine brown sugar, butter, cream, corn syrup and pancake syrup in a saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Boil, uncovered, for 1 minute.

Remove baking pan from

oven. Sprinkle nuts and cranberries over hot crust.

Pour topping over nuts and cranberries.

Continue baking for 15 minutes or until topping is bubbly.

Cool in pan on a rack.

Using foil as an aid, lift square from pan. Cut into squares.

Remove squares from foil. Store in an airtight container in refrigerator for up to 1 week. May be frozen.

Makes 32.

East Central Alberta Community Choir performs at Alliance United Church Diane Dammann Alliance

Crop Management, the fertilizer facility at the edge of town, is under new ownership and management.

I stopped in to deliver the Alliance Community calendar and met Wade Black. Wade is from the Brownfield area.

Sunny is back in town.

Min Sun at the grocery store and post office has been on his own while Sunny helped with childcare for the granddaughter in Calgary. The granddaughter is now 10.

They have added a door to the room on the north side of the entry and created a liquor store which Sunny is tending.

Besides the liquor addition there will be some other changes as they increase postal services and customer care. Welcome back Sunny!

The furnace in the United Church was not working Sunday morning which necessitated the cancellation of the worship service.

The East Central Alberta (ECA) Community Choir presented the Christmas Cantata, Child of Promise, on Sunday afternoon in Alliance. It was scheduled for the United Church which has amazing acoustics but because the furnace was not functioning, the Cantata was moved to the Community Hall.

There were 15 singers, a conductor, a narrator and a pianist. The singers ranged from 15 years old to over 70 which proves that music is a common ground for all. The selection of hymns was really enjoyable. There is so much talent in our little communities.

History was made at the senior’s centre on Thursday when Rose Marie Wickstrom got a perfect 29 crib hand. Players were just talking about how all the years everyone has been playing and no one had ever seen a perfect hand. The next round,

OBITUARIES

Irene Bailer (nee McMahon)

On December 14, 2022 Irene passed away peacefully.

She was born to Fred and Gina McMahon in 1931; Irene was raised on a farm in the Pleasington

area.

She was married to Gordon Bailer in 1952, they had a strong and devoted marriage of over 70 years.

She was a dedicated farm wife whose many contributions included bringing hot meals out to the field, milking cows, or driving the grain truck during harvest.

She worked hard tending her large vegetable garden, canning and freezing.

Chauffeuring kids to various activities and sporting events, she was

our biggest fan.

She did several types of handicrafts, including cross-stitched samplers for each of the grandchildren when they were born. She liked the challenges of mending and fixing things, especially if it was any of the grandchildren’s clothes.

After she and Gordon sold the farm in 1991 and moved to Camrose, she liked to visit the Pleasington area.

Irene earned an award for volunteering at the

Camrose Seniors Centre.

She had tremendous empathy for others and, throughout her life, she persevered through any challenges she faced. We jokingly referred to her as “one tough old bird.”

Her family played a huge role in her life. As the youngest of the 13 McMahon children, Irene had no shortage of siblings and they enjoyed lots of family social gatherings as there were many McMahons and relations nearby.

FAITH COLUMN: LEST WE FORGET

As we are fast approaching Christmas, what is your level of joy this season?

For that matter, how much pleasure and happiness are you experiencing in your life, not just during this Christmas season, but throughout the past year?

Sadly, it appears of late, there just seems to be less joy in this world.

Yet, though may surprise us, God wants us to be very happy.

How do we then ration-

alize these things? Is God then a liar, or could it be that we are looking at the wrong things for our joy?

Looking at things that are only temporal, which means that the only joy they can give us is temporary at best. Could it be that we need to be looking at greater things in order to have greater joy?

The trouble is, these greater things are harder to see since we are so easily distracted and confused by all these near sighted

things that we think will give us the joy that we desire.

The greatest thing being the eternal, meaning God Himself. Who has promised, for those who look to Him, overwhelming joy, as the Apostles Paul says May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.

Luke 15:13 Christmastime verifies that we have access to this

joy, since it came with Jesus that night He came near to us.

Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.

Going with a real tree this year? Ideas for what to do with it after Christmas When choosing a real Christmas tree for holiday celebrations, consumers should think about the many ways that trees can be repurposed after the holiday season.

Some towns collect discarded trees to use them for various purposes. However, homeowners can get in on the action as well. The Old Farmer's Almanac offers these great ideas for postholiday tree use.

• Prop up the tree near a bird feeder to provide another perch and shelter to birds that stick close to home in winter, such as chickadees and finches.

• String the tree with various treats for birds and put it in a sheltered location. Ideas include homemade suet, cranberries and millet.

• Mulch the tree and use it in the garden in the spring.

• Use boughs to insulate perennials in the garden.

• Keep some branches to

use as kindling in a wood stove or fireplace, or as aromatic logs for next year's yule fire.

• Sink an old tree in a per-

sonal pond. Fish and tadpoles will live and lay eggs around this sheltered area.

• · Collect some pine needles and sew them into

fabric packets to make scented sachets for closets or drawers.

There are many imagina-

tive ways to come up with handy uses for Christmas trees once the holiday season ends.
