Two-year-old Leila Campbell travelled from Edmonton to visit with her grandma in Mundare Dec. 7. Grandma decided it might be nice to visit Santa Claus who was taking part in the town’s winter festival. Leila wasn’t so sure, but Santa did his best to try and encourage a smile from the little girl.

More cops on their way Details unclear but Lamont municipalities scramble for budget money for more policing

BY JOHN MATHER The provincial government has moved to act on the increase in rural crime throughout Alberta but how its impact on rural community budgets is unclear.

The province announced in early December it would provide more than $286 million over five years into frontline law enforcement with the addition of more RCMP officers and civilian positions.

Small and rural communities, with some exceptions, will begin contributing a portion of their frontline policing costs in 2020. To give communities time to adjust, the new funding model is being phased

in: communities will contribute 10 per cent of policing costs in 2020, followed by 15 per cent in 2021, 20 per cent in 2022 and 30 per cent in 2023. Previously, rural communities with populations under 5,000 have not had to pay for policing services.

But according to Lamont County chief administrative officer Stephen Hill the details at best are sketchy right now.

“Facilities for these new individuals don’t exist right now,” he pointed out. “Except for the stations currently out there. When you hire 500 people that’s a lot of space that has to be found. None of the asso-

ciations or communities have been given any information yet.”

He said he hopes the plan to bring the cost model in effect next April is delayed.

“Both AUMA and RMA are going to push the province to delay that billing process until 2021.

“Whether they do or don’t it will definitely have an impact on the smaller municipalities.”

He said he doesn’t have any idea what that may be yet, since the province hasn’t provided any information on what the structure will be.

“The only thing we have some idea about right now is the labour costs. We don’t have

Bruderheim suffers water outage

BY JANA SEMENIUK The Everbridge Emergency system alerted Bruderheim residents by text and email at 9:30 p.m. on Dec. 8 to a water outage scheduled for Dec. 9. The outage was due to a main water line repair in the Brookside Subdivision. The repair required shutting off water to residents located from 4623-55 Ave. and 5418 - 55 Ave. as well as residents between 465055 Ave and 5425-55 Ave. “Our system alerted us late Saturday night that we were experiencing a

water loss,” said Bruderheim Chief Administrative Officer, Patty Podoborozny.

“Crews found the water pooling in Brookside.”

P o d o b o r o z n y explained that it was difficult to isolate the location of the break as the ground is frozen making the water seep. In addition, there is not as much pressure in a service line as opposed to a main line break.

Podoborozny added that the main line in Brookside is on private property as opposed to the road right of way

in other areas of town.

“We had to pull up two concrete driveways to find the leak,” she said.

“The leak is at the service connection from the main line.”

Podoborozny said there is a service line from the main line for every residence.

Residents were instructed to fill containers with potable water to sustain them during the line repair which was expected to be completed by 5 p.m. Dec. 9.

Trendy Petals has grand opening

BY JANA SEMENIUK Deb Fountain, owner of Lamont’s new flower shop Trendy Petals, held her grand opening celebration Dec. 7. Guests were welcomed with breadsticks and homemade dips while enjoying the wonderful aroma of the flower shop.

Fountain officially opened her doors earlier on Oct. 5 and found a way to make that first open day a special time in her business history.

“I recorded the details of my very first customer,” explained Fountain. “I wrote her name and what she bought so I would always remember my first customer.”

Fountain said business has been very good so far with Thanksgiving and Christmas giving her a welcome boost. In addition, she has found a way

to give back to her community by participating in the County of Lamont Foodbank’s Giving Tree Program.

“The Giving Tree is doing really well!” she said. “We have four gifts under the tree right now.”

Fountain is hoping to focus on weddings in the coming year.

She also explained that before becoming a flower shop owner, she owned a trucking business with her husband Don in Mackenzie, B.C. When Don passed away of cancer three years ago, Fountain felt she could no longer maintain her business.

“Last winter I knew I no longer wanted to have the trucking business,” explained Fountain. “It was too hard without Don.” After considering her

options, a friend suggested that she purchase the flower shop that was for sale in Lamont, The Flower Pot. “Before I jumped into anything, I decided to do some schooling,” said Fountain.

She then attended classes in Calgary and San Francisco to learn floral design, in addition to learning the marketing and purchasing aspects of the business.

She then decided to open her own flower shop in the location of the former dog grooming shop on 50 Ave. As reported by the Lamont Leader earlier this year, The Flower Pot, which was owned and operated by Jean Stacey for 19 years in Lamont, closed its doors in the spring of 2019 upon Stacey’s retirement.

Opinion Thank you for the thank yous!

One of the best things about writing an opinion piece is when it touches people. I get contacted on occasion by people who have said that what they had read may have affected how they thought about things, or maybe even helped them in a personal way.

Don’t get me wrong, I have been contacted on the contrary as well - many times. A lot more in fact. With those people, I ask them to write their opinions down and we will run them as a letter to the editor. It’s only fair that if I am allowed to write down my opinions publicly, that readers have the same right. Even if it totally disagrees with my views, it will be run as long as it legally isn’t hurting someone else (feelings excluded, we’re all allowed to disagree).

I won’t give names because some of these encounters are very private, like the one instance many years ago when a woman I barely knew came into the office with outstretched arms to give me a huge, teary-eyed hug. She told me that something I wrote bonded her family back together. How’s that for a great day?

I am sure nurses, EMTs, doctors, teachers, and many other professions experience this too on occasion. It’s few and far between in this business, but it is moving when someone takes their own time to contact me just to say that somehow I have made a difference in their lives. It’s so rewarding.

This has happened to me quite recently, when someone who read about my colonoscopy escapades decided to do themselves a favour and book an overdue appointment. Another person was inspired to quit smoking after having read the article about me celebrating 25 years smoke-free. Congratulations to them. Last week I was contacted privately about another article. You know who you are, and it was very much appreciated. Thank you.

It’s really easy to complain about things. I have done it. Seemingly getting back at someone who has done you wrong can be momentarily satisfying. But that feeling fades quite quickly, and what is left is a hollowness and maybe a feeling of guilt.

We all have our moments, right?

My personal policy has always been to take the time to let people know if something happens that I believe might be exceptional. I have thanked employees, let managers know about outstanding service (especially from young people), and have sent little gifts and thank you cards. What a great feeling knowing I may have made someone’s day.

It’s a much better than maybe having ruined a day for someone. Readers have certainly been making my days a lot better recently. Thank you for that.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR MLA gives opinion of ATA retirement fund Hello everyone, I am the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for our riding of Fort SaskatchewanVegreville, Jackie ArmstrongHomeniuk. I am honoured to be elected to represent you in the Legislature and I have been focused on representing our riding and its needs.

Our government greatly values the dedication and contributions made by all public sector employees, including Alberta’s teachers. The legislation to make the Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo) the exclusive investment manager of the Alberta Teachers’ Retirement Fund (ATRF) was put forward with the best interest of the Alberta teacher and

taxpayers in mind.

The broader use of AIMCo reflects our government’s commitment to make government more efficient and ensure the best use of taxpayer dollars. AIMCo has a substantially large investment pool when compared to the ATRF. With AIMCo becoming the investment manager of the ATRF, Albertans will see reduced investment management costs, which will save taxpayers roughly $41 million annually, or approximately $500 annually for each teacher that contributes to the Fund. Ultimately, this change will redirect administration funding into the overall health of the fund, protecting both teachers and tax payers.

Further to cost savings, our government is confident that moving ATRF assets under AimCo will yield higher investment returns, to the benefit of Alberta’s teachers. AIMCo manages a number of public sector pension plans, such as the Local Authorities Pension Plan, with strong results. From August 2017 to August 2018, ATRF had a return of 9.6 per cent. Over the same time period, AIMCo outperformed ATRF with a return of 9.8 per cent. AIMCo has also outperformed ATRF when looking at the four-year average.

Community Appreciation Night helps food bank

BY JANA SEMENIUK A Community Appreciation Night was hosted by the Mundare Fire and Rescue department Nov. 29 to thank the community that has generously supported them.

“We’re always looking for donations from local businesses for the department,” said Fire Chief Glenda Dales.

“Plus, we normally go door to door collecting for the foodbank. So, we decided to do two things at once and asked people to bring a donation for the foodbank giving back to the community by hosting dinner here at the fire station.”

Firefighters were on hand frying up fish and chips as well as chicken with a side of coleslaw to satisfy the crowd. As well, cupcakes and Jell-O were on the dessert menu.

In addition to dinner,

the crew were also available to provide information to visitors on various types of equipment and discuss safety tips.

The event was well attended with adults and children of all ages present to enjoy the evening.

Chamber of Commerce reflects on successful year

BY JANA SEMENIUK The Lamont & District Chamber of Commerce saw a full house of attendees during their annual Christmas Mixer at the Alberta Treasury Branch in Bruderheim on Dec 9.

Members of the Chamber were joined by a number of elected officials who were on hand to help celebrate the end of a successful year.

Guests included Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville MLA Jackie Armstrong Homeniuk, Lamont County Reeve Dave Diduck, Bruderheim Mayor Karl Hauch, Town of Lamont Mayor Bill Skinner, Lamont Council member Jody Foulds, Bruderheim Council member Dan Skousbal, and Bruderheim Deputy Mayor Judy Schueler.

Armstrong-Homeniuk stressed the importance of loving what you do when asked to address the entrepreneurial members of the Chamber.

“I think it’s really important for people to follow their passions,” she said. “And now I’m following mine.”

A light meal was provided by Bruderheim caterer Elsie Matthews which included desserts.

Door prizes were provided by new Lamont business owner Deb Fountain of the Trendy Petals flower shop in addition to a large flower arrangement, that was presented to former board member Vincent Price of Price Automotive.

“Vince was a big part of the early success of the

Chamber of Commerce,” said Chamber president Cathy Goulet. “He kept a lot of things going for the Chamber early on and we really appreciate what he has done for us over the years.”

In addition to Price’s work for the Chamber, Goulet shared a personal story with the group of how Price came through for her when she needed help.

“One time Bob (Goulet’s husband) was out of town and I had to be somewhere,” said Goulet. “And my car wouldn’t start. I called Vince who came right over and knew just what to do. I think that’s what it’s all about when you are a business in a small town. Having that personal touch.”

New title creates public works vacancy in Lamont County

BY JOHN MATHER Lamont has a new public works director.

Gordon Molnar started his job in the middle of November, moving into the position previously held by Chris Vallaire.

“I started three weeks ago,” Molnar said. “It’s been very busy so far.”

Molnar said his first order of attention is to determine the priorities of his department and get to know who is doing what.

Molnar has an an extensive engineering background in both government and private business. He owned his own consulting business prior to coming to Lamont County.

Vallaire, meanwhile, has been moved to work with the economic development planning group in industrial development.

“He’d been working part of last year on our industrial development,” said County CAO Stephen Hill. “There’s enough to keep a person doing that full time, so we hired and needed new public works director.”

Hard work led to longevity states Lamont centenarian Roy Reinhardt turns 101 with celebration at Lodge

BY JANA SEMENIUK One of Lamont County’s most senior residents celebrated his 101st birthday at the Beaverhill Pioneer Lodge in Lamont on Dec. 6.

Roy Reinhardt, who has lived in the County his entire life, enjoyed a celebration complete with balloons, cake, friends and family.

“I was born right in that hospital,” said Reinhardt pointing in the direction of the Lamont Hospital. “In 1918., Dec. 6.”

Reinhardt explained that he was two days old when his mother became a victim of the flu epidemic of 1918-1919 which claimed 4,000 Albertans, according the University of Alberta

Public Health News.

“My dad was American and worked as a mechanic at Riske’s (garage) in Bruderheim,” he said. “And Reinhardts had the hotel in Bruderheim. My mom worked for them. After she died, my dad went back to the States and they (Reinhardt's) adopted me.”

Reinhardt remembers attending school in a one room school house south of his home.

“Those were the good days,” he said After spending five and a half years overseas in the army, Reinhardt returned to the Lamont area to get married and farm for the next 71 years.

“We farmed six quar-

ters at one time,” Reinhardt remembers fondly. “We’ve still got three.”

On Nov. 29, 1960 the Reinhardt family lost their oldest daughter, Darleen, 16, in the Lamont bus accident which claimed 17 young lives. Reinhardt’s wife later passed away of cancer.

When asked what he attributes to his longevity, Reinhardt said don’t stop the hard work.

“That’s right!” he said with a laugh. “Years ago, we did everything by hand. Now it’s all push button. That’s what’s killing this country.

Nobody wants to work anymore.”

Roy Reinhardt of Lamont, turned 101 Dec. 6. The centenarian is also the oldest member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 27 in Fort Saskatchewan.

That branch includes the town’s of Bruderheim and Lamont in its area. To honour their comrade, executive member Sharon Gillison and Sergeant at Arms, Jeff Wonnick, visited with Reinhardt at Beaverhill Lodge on Dec.5.

FROM WHERE I SIT: Stairs

BY HAZEL ANAKA Stairs. Love ‘em or hate ‘em. Fitness junkies in Edmonton run up flight after flight of stairs from the river valley.

Conference delegates at the Edmonton Convention Centre cringe at the a l w a y s - u n d e r- re p a i r escalators and eye the staircases with contempt and fear.

The ability to comfortably and safely climb a flight of stairs is an indication of fitness levels. If we’re winded after the first one, it’s a red flag. If we can tackle multiple

floors, we’re ninjas. I remember being chastised for holding onto the handrail. Don’t ya know it’s crawling with germs?

Then the advice was: three-point contact is critical to avoiding falls and injuries.

Around here, we have the original staircase from circa 1959. The stairs are a full forty-four inches wide with a generous eleven-inch tread and a comfortable seveninch rise. Two solid mahogany handrails line the sides. Anyone from old people to toddlers can navigate them easily.

Now that construction is complete, repainting them in spring is on my to-do list.

Because Roy didn’t build the new outdoor stairs this summer, the situation out there is

totally different. In fairness, they were temporary builder’s steps. The front door has a couple steps and a ramp which makes unloading a full car or moving furniture in quite easy. The single two by four handrail is both unattractive and inadequate. The back door has a small landing and risers of differing heights. Not great. I’ve forgotten a lot from my childhood, a hundred years ago, but I do remember a very narrow, winding, no-rail staircase in an uncle’s old farm house. To a little kid, it was a scary adventure playing on those stairs. I wonder how the giant-sized adults in that household got up and down them.

an artform. And a huge measure of a carpenter’s worth. Of course, I understand that sometimes the available space necessitates modifications to the ideal. Every time, I climb the two steps to the old studio I am irked. Surely, the guy could have split the difference and made them uniform in height, but no.

So, why this ode to the stairs? I continue to recover from a fall this summer and doing stairs is the measure of my recovery. During the acute stage, stabbing pain in my knee was triggered by the height difference between floor and scatter mat. Stairs were virtually impossible because of the excruciating pain. Several physio treatments have

you do fall, follow treatment instructions which may include prescription painkillers. I’m usually so busy resisting taking meds that I suffer needlessly and delay my recovery. Understand, to your core, that losing function is a real possibility and should scare you silly, regardless of your age. Embrace the opportunity to climb stairs within your ability to do so. Soon, you’ll be surprised that it gets easier. Set up a fitness area that makes this necessary part of life as pleasant as it can be. Netflix, books and magazines, and listening to audio books makes the time fly by. Be quicker than I was to finally understand that use it or lose it is real.

Now, it’s off to my mini gym, from where I sit.

Adding nearly an hour of dedicated exercise to each day is difficult but is paying off. The physio also warned that if I don’t continue to try normalizing my gait ascending and descending (which is considerably harder), I will lose function. Talk about being scared straight.

So, what’s the moral of this story? Take all necessary precautions to avoid falls because the road to recovery is long, inconvenient, and painful. If

Bruderheim Tier 6 Atoms (4-3-0) won back to back games over the weekend. On Saturday, Bruderheim travelled to Leduc and skated away with a 5-4 win. Leduc opened the game with two first period goals but Bruderheim fought back to take a 4-3 lead early in the third frame. Leduc tied the score a minute later, but Lochlan McCormick scored the winner at the 12:00 mark of the period. Maxim Dach got a hat trick in the game, while Lochlan scored two goals. Shawn Lyles got the win in goal.

Bruderheim hosted Fort Saskatchewan on Sunday and skated away with a 5-1 win despite Fort opening the scoring.

Micah Daku (1g 1), Shawn Lyles, Callum Dziekciarz, Ethan Mehlenbacher, and Nicklas Mehlenbacher scored for Bruderheim.

Bruderheim gives first reading to new fees and charges bylaw

BY JOHN MATHER Council gave first reading to the fees and charges bylaw for 2020 at its Dec. 4 meeting.

“The fees are updated annually,” said Chief Administrative Officer Patty Podoborozny. “The town provides a number of services to our town in order to enhance the quality of life.

“The fees and charges reflect increase the town’s costs.”

Council passed first reading of the bylaw.

After final reading it will be placed on the town’s website A couple of changes residents may notice are for off season use of the arena from March to October which will increase from $40 per hour to $42 per hour for local users and from $60 per hour to $63 per hours for non local users.

A new fee for half day usage of the community hall will come into effect Jan. 1. The new cost is

$145 for a maximum of four hours. However, this new cost drops to $115 for a maximum of four hours for non profit groups. Local non-profit groups and youth recreation will be able to rent the community hall for $100 a day for the full day and $75 for a maximum of four hours. That is an increase from the $75 per day charged in 2019.

Animal control fees remain unchanged for the next year with an unaltered dog licence costing $32 and the fee for a spayed or neutered dog being $22. There is an over limit dog permit fee of $62 unchanged for the year.

Bruderheim passed a motion to support a one and a half per cent levy from the Northern Lights Library System, Dec. 4.

“The budget increase will assist the system with upgrades to the library computer systems, upgrading security

He added library funding across the system was pegged to stay at $37 million for the next four years.

When asked what the increase was CAO Podoborozny reported it was very small but she couldn’t give council the exact amount.

Councillor Pat Lee told council she was really impressed with the concert put on in Fort Saskatchewan by the Fort Saskatchewan Community Band.

She mentioned the community band was coming to Bruderheim Dec. 12 and hoped many residents would come out to see them.
