Ways to try and avoid spreading illness at home Spending time together with loved ones is an important component of daily life. However, when an illness affects one person of the household, that highly coveted closeness can put others at risk.

Infectious diseases are equal opportunity hitchhikers. Should a person be waylaid by influenza, strep throat, mononucleosis, or COVID-19, casual contact may be all it takes to pass the illness to someone else.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that COVID-19 is primarily spread from personto-person among people who are in close contact with one another (within about six feet). Respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes can land in the mouths or noses of people nearby or possibly be inhaled through the lungs.

Other viruses and bacteria spread from contact with contaminated surfaces or objects and then touching one’s own mouth, nose or possibly the eyes.

Keeping household members safe when one person is ill can be challenging, but it is possible.

These steps can help keep everyone in a household safe, particularly from virulent diseases.

• Wash your hands. This is the most effective way to prevent the spread of

germs. As frequently as possible, wash your hands, but especially after touching frequently used items or before and after preparing and eating food.

• Disinfect surfaces. Target areas that are frequently touched by all members of the household.

Such surfaces include doorknobs, stairway railings, bathroom and kitchen faucets, the refrigerator door, light switches, and cabinet knobs. Make sure to keep the disinfectant visibly wet on the surface for the “dwell time” recommended on the label instructions to fully kill the germs.

• Consider colour coding. Use microfibre cloths, which don’t harbor germs like porous sponges do, with different colours for cleaning each room of the house to prevent the spread of germs from one area to another.

• Keep your distance.

Sick individuals should stay away from others as much as possible. Now

might be the time to use a guest bedroom for spouses who normally share a bed.

Designate a separate bathroom for healthy individuals. Do not touch hands, hug, or kiss others while you are ill. Kaiser Foundation Health Plans also suggests hygiene techniques like coughing or sneezing into a tissue or sleeve to trap the virus.

els. Do not share towels and linens with others while sick. Now is the time for a personal bath towel or bathrobe for showering and drying hands, offers Meridian Health.

It can be difficult to avoid spreading disease when one member of a household is sick. But with proper hygiene and diligence, illnesses can be contained.

Handling the mental challenges of social distancing can be difficult The concept of “social distancing” was no doubt a mystery to millions of people prior to 2020. But in the wake of the outbreak of COVID-19, a novel coronavirus that was first discovered in China in late 2019 but soon spread across the globe, social distancing became a household term.

Social distancing refers to actions deliberately designed to increase the physical space between people to avoid spreading illness. The American Psychological Association notes that social distancing typically requires that people stay at least six feet apart from each other while also avoiding gathering spaces such as schools, churches, concert halls, and public transportation. In an effort to prevent community spread, many state and provincial governments mandated the closure of all businesses deemed “nonessential,” forcing many working professionals to work from home full-time and temporarily putting millions of additional workers out of work.

Social distancing measures are designed to serve the greater good, and these efforts can be effective at stopping the spread of harmful viruses like COVID-19. But social distancing also can produce unwanted side effects. The APA notes that research has shown that people who are social distancing may be vulnerable to fear and anxiety; depression and boredom; anger, frustration or irritability; and stigmatization. However, the APA also notes that research has uncovered successful ways to cope with social distancing.

• Make time for fun activities. Psychologists recommend balancing time spent on news and social media with other activities unrelated to social distancing or quarantine. Make a conscious effort each day to read a book, listen to music, or even learn a new language.

• Get news from reliable sources. Inaccurate information about COVID-19 can spread fear, making it even more difficult for people to cope with social

distancing. The APA recommends people get their information from news outlets that rely on trusted

organizations like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organiza-

tion.

• Maintain virtual connections with others. Faceto-face interactions may

not be possible, but the APA notes the value of phone calls, text messages, video chat, and social

When rural Albertans wanted power like the city dwellers back in the late 1940s, farmers got together to put in power poles and lines. Three steps to improve digital literacy skills with so many working from home No matter your age, enjoying all today’s world has to offer involves going online and using technology. But if you don’t feel comfortable or confident with all things digital, it can be hard to participate and feel connected. To start honing your skills, try these key tips: 1. Start with a small goal. Don’t set yourself up for failure and frustration by wanting to do it all at once. If you’re just starting out, set yourself a small achievable goal, like sending your kids or grandkids an email. If

you’re more advanced, aim to master a new software program or platform, like InDesign or WordPress.

Depending on your goal and level of expertise, you can find resources online or among friends and family.

2. Understand the basics. Even if you think you’re beyond the basics, it’s important to make sure you have a solid foundation on which to build. Familiarize yourself with the general terminology of the digital world, including words like ISP, cookies, and anti-

virus software.

You’ll also want to learn best practices for staying safe online, such as never opening an email from an unknown sender and looking for secure “https” sites when entering personal or financial information.

3. Participate in a workshop. Sometimes face-toface coaching is the best way to learn something new. A great resource while much of the world is shut down is called Youth Teaching Adults, a new digital literacy program that hosts free workshops where adults

learn digital literacy skills from youth volunteer-tutors. The one-on-one workshops are led by youth, allowing them to develop important leadership skills and gain

high school community service hours. Workshops can take place in all kinds of settings: learning and community centres, libraries, schools, youth centres and settlement or

newcomers’ organizations across the country.

ASC warns about work from home scams The Alberta Securities Commission (ASC) is warning Alberta investors about potentially fraudulent ads by companies offering opportunities to work from home as traders in the financial markets during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Typically claiming to train you on trading stocks or forex, the ads state that traders can keep a large percentage of the profits, and they don’t need experience or a licence; however, the firms demand payment of fees from would-be traders, and the ASC believes neither the firms nor fees are legitimate.

Day trading on the stock or foreign exchange markets is inherently high-risk and usually requires professional training and advanced software. The extreme volatility of current market conditions compounds the level of difficulty in achieving the high returns the ads claim.

In Canada, anyone in the business of trading securities must be registered with the securities regulator in each province or territory where they do business, unless an exemption applies. To become registered, individuals need to meet minimum proficiency standards.

The ASC expects that similar scams will continue to increase as more Canadians are looking for alternative sources of income due to layoffs or requirements to stay home during the COVID19 crisis.

Anyone who has information about these

schemes is urged to contact the ASC at inquiries@asc.ca or by calling 403-355-4151 (tollfree 1-877-355-4488).

The ASC, as part of the Canadian Securities Administrators, is also warning investors about companies claiming to

have products or services that will prevent, detect, or cure COVID-19. At this time, there is no vaccine or natural health product that is authorized to treat or protect against COVID-19.

Seasonal allergies or COVID: some distinctions that could save worry As winter gave way to spring, nature did not give any signs in relation to what the people of the world were going through. As trees and flowers bloomed just like they do every spring, the people accustomed to witnessing the awe-inspiring transformation on display each spring were experiencing a transformation of their own.

Social distancing measures enacted during the COVID-19 outbreak in late-winter 2020 forced many people to stay home, only venturing outside to run routine errands like buying groceries or filling prescriptions.

People were urged to stay home to help prevent the COVID-19 virus from spreading, and those recommendations included people exhibiting mild symptoms of illness.

As spring hit its stride and pollen counts climbed, many people wondered if certain symptoms they were experiencing were byproducts of seasonal allergies or the COVID-19 virus.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention note that it’s easy to mistake common allergy symptoms for COVID-19, and that’s especially so given the level of concern many people have about the novel coronavirus that has already claimed thousands of victims across the globe. But it’s important that people recognize the symptoms of allergies and COVID19 are different. The following are some symptoms of allergies and some of COVID-19, courtesy of the CDC and the Mayo Clinic.

Allergy symptoms • Itchy eyes • Stuffy nose • Sneezing Doctors advise people who are exhibiting potential allergy symptoms to pay attention to their body temperatures. People with allergies very rarely experience fever, so the absence of fever, even if other symptoms

of allergies are present, might indicate that a person is suffering from allergies and not COVID-19. In addition, allergy symptoms tend to be mild and recur year after year around the same time, such as when plants bloom in spring and summer. So if symptoms that are currently present are the same ones a person confronts every year, then he or she is likely suffering from allergies and not COVID19. People can err on the side of caution by discussing their symptoms and history with their physicians.
