Och, hey! It was the second annual Gathering of the Clans, hosted by the Flagstaff Scottish Club, on Saturday, Aug. 24.

Hundreds of people came to the Wild Rose Co-op Rec. Centre grounds in Sedgewick to watch an incredible display that included unique performers, Scottish Highland games, pipers and drummers, and dancers, as well as a host of unique vendors offering a variety of wares.

Howdy my fellow Killamites. What a bizarro week it has been.

I can’t remember the last time I had to turn the heat on in a vehicle in the month of August. But I sure had to put it on these last couple of days as it has gotten rather cold with that wind!

I may be an odd duck,

but I do like to stay warm at all times, so the heat was necessary. What wasn’t necessary was the fresh scent of skunk I drove through, which my car used and warmed up for my poor, defenseless nostrils. Yuck.

Hopefully that wind is helping our farmers out, who I am sure are getting a little anxious about how harvest is going to go this year. Crossing my fingers

that Mother Nature gets her act together and brings on some sunshine and tosses the rain away for a bit to let the fields dry.

LETTER Appreciating the often Information about medal under-appreciated A couple of weeks ago while I was cheering on my wife Michelle at the Edmonton Marathon, I was fortunate enough to observe some interesting, and even uplifting, goings-on that reminded me to appreciate the often unappreciated.

After parking and walking to one of the blockade areas of Jasper Avenue, I chatted with an Edmonton police officer for a brief time in passing. He wanted to know where I was going, and I told him about Michelle working her way up to running marathons and that if her time was good enough that particular day, she would qualify for the world-famous Boston Marathon.

He was impressed by her goal, and wished me well on her behalf. We agreed that neither of us could understand how these athletes physically accomplish what they do, or why, but it is amazing nonetheless.

At one of the race turn-arounds, the Canadian military stood guard. One group of military officers handed out medals for marathon finishers. There was even a 10 km run for military personnel as part of the day’s activities, but this uniformed group at the turn were just guarding runners and helping out when needed.

As the runners approached, the military cheered them on and congratulated them on their achievements.

I was impressed at how authentically happy and engaged the young military members were, and also with the number of runners who thanked them for their service to Canada.

One older gentleman, probably in his 80s, stopped and saluted them. It was a wonderful moment, and I could tell that the military members were choked up and so grateful for his patriotic gesture.

This casual encounter, for some reason, made me think back to the old black and white television program “The Andy Griffith Show.” Andy was a small town sheriff (Andy Taylor) who very rarely dealt with many serious crimes, but he definitely had to police the characters who lived and interacted around town. He mostly did so using his likability, charm, and public relations skills.

Our military and police these days are often so busy with daily operations and paperwork that pleasant public interactions can be few and far between. But it is important for them, and the public as well, as I observed first hand that day.

Personally, my observations that day were an important reminder that the police and military are working to protect us; and that 99.9 percent of them are very good people despite a world of social media negativity often targeted at them both.

Why else would they choose such selfless careers?

After cheering on my wife, I thanked the military for their help and on the way back to my vehicle, I waved at the police officer. As he waved back he yelled: “How’d she do?”

“She qualified,” I shouted, to which he signalled two big thumbs up.

These are the National Order of the Legion of Honour from France and the Ambassador for Peace Medal from the Republic of Korea.

Our veterans of the Second World War and the Korean War have both fought hard and made tremendous sacrifices, and they have both won the greatest level of respect and thanks we can give them.

The Government of France is awarding their highest medal to all living Canadian veterans who directly helped to liberate their country between June 6 and August 30, 1944.

The Republic of Korea is presenting its Ambassador for Peace Medal to all Canadian Veterans who participated in

the Korean War and its peace keeping operations between 1950 and 1955.

Living veterans or the families of veterans who have passed away may be eligible to receive this special medal from Korea.

If you are a veteran or know someone that is, and who might be eligible for one of these important medals, please contact me.

TV no longer educational Dear Editor; The ads for the latest Australian Bachelor series show the newest young man who is searching for love and it looks like there may be some starcrossed love.

In one of his introductions he mentions that he is an Astrophysicist and the lady replies that she is a Gemini.

Subsequent discussion between the ladies in the ad does not show any further in-depth understanding of science.

This illustrates why I, as a retired science teacher, fear for our future.

TV is no longer helping as an educational tool.

There needs to be some awareness of the difference between science, astrophysics and false science, astrology.

Astrology is silly although mildly fun and probably read by a few scientists for a laugh although it is really fake.

The real concern is when people cannot tell what is real and proven by science.

There is a need to call out those who deny climate change or won't give their children vaccinations.

Perhaps they should be sent to the Moon or Mars; yes, people have been to the Moon.

If people find love, then wars and war spending will cease, and science spending will be reinvigorated.

Sedgewick School will not be ready for Sept. 3 Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Students and parents of Central High Sedgewick Public School (CHSPS) found out officially on Friday, Aug. 25, that the interior of the school will not be ready to host classes on Sept. 3, which was to be the first day back at school.

Instead, Senior High students will start back sometime yet to be named next week to the Wild Rose Co-op Rec. Centre.

Junior High and Elementary students will start back to school on Sept. 11, and they will be joined by the Sr. High students then as well.

In a joint statement Principal William Klassen and Vice-Principal Keely Nelson say, “In the days between now

and Sept. 11, we will create ‘Camp Sedgewick’ on the school grounds, using mobile trailers provided by the insurance company as classrooms, office, and washroom spaces.

“The first trailers will arrive at the school in the next few days.”

CHSPS and Battle River School Division (BRSD) staff hope to get access to the new classrooms by Sept. 9 to get desks, tech hook-ups, and learning resources in place for students.

News is that students will be able to use the Home Ec. and Shop rooms inside the school

by Sept. 11, too, and that the small gym should be available soon afterwards. Sports practices and games will be held at the Killam Public School gym for as long as neces-

sary.

Dozens of workers and contractors have been onsite at the school since the fire, along with a restoration crew, getting the building cleaned up and repaired.

“In addition to repairing fire damage, they are replacing every single ceiling tile, washing all hard surfaces, steam cleaning soft surfaces, and checking the ducting in order to eliminate smoke and ensure the air quality is acceptable.”

Air quality issues, as well as smoke and water damage, may take up to eight months to completely repair, with damages to the east side of the building more severe than initially estimated, with an estimate of two months before that wing will be reopened, sometime around fall break.

h the Last Tuesday was 10th annual Movie in the Park event. They lucked out and got a rain-free evening. Unfortunately, that also means summer break is coming to an end.

With that, there has been an update about the Sedgewick school. Plans include a "Camp Sedgewick" as they are expecting trailers to be delivered to use as classrooms, offices, and washrooms.

Sedgewick playschool registration night is coming up on Sept. 4. It’s a great chance to ask any questions you might have.

The family of Pastor Gary Buckley, who resides in Rimbey now, had a wonderful time celebrating his 80th birthday at the Fairmont hot springs. Sharman and Arthur Buckley from Sedgewick attended the celebration and enjoyed a full week of sunshine while in BC. It was probably their best week of summer yet.

As you can tell from other articles in the paper, Sedgewick had a busy weekend with events and I hope you had a chance to take them in.

The next Sedgewick community kitchen is coming up fast, on Sept.

The Town of Sedgewick invites all community groups to sign up for an expression of interest in the upcoming concert.

By helping with clean up, liquor sales, or security, for example, your organization can benefit with a monetary donation. It takes a lot of work to put the concerts on, but your club could benefit and, overall, many hands make light work.

The application deadline for the phase two of the recreation grant is Sept. 16. Make sure to get the paperwork in before then, otherwise your organization might not receive the second half of the grant payment.

Also, the monthly meeting for the seniors returns on the first Wednesday of September.

New gazebo for residents of Providence Place to enjoy

Providence Place staff and residents in Daysland are happy to have their new gazebo open for all residents and visitors alike to enjoy.

Fundraising for the project began back in July and Providence Place has been patiently waiting for the structure to be completed so the residents may enjoy the outdoors under some shade.

Pouring the concrete was the most time-consuming and money-demanding portion of the project, but organizers say all of the hassle was worth it to see the finished product.

Providence Place had

been seeking donations since March of 2016 and the gazebo was only just completed at the beginning of August.

A fundraiser took place on July 3, where supper and 50/50 tickets were sold in an attempt to put a dent in the project cost.

The administration first noticed a need for the shelter when residents were expressing interest in going outside, but didn’t have a designated area.

“One resident goes out every day to read in the gazebo. It has power so he can plug in his oxygen and get fresh air at the same time.”

Hello everyone, it’s a nice sunny day after a cool night and frost in some low lying areas. I hope we are lucky for a few more weeks.

It's hard to believe that it is nearly the first day of September already; where does the time go?

At this time of year everyone gets anxious; especially the farmers, hoping the weather will smarten up so they can get the crops in, and the women, hoping they can get their canning done before the weather decides to change for our long winter.

I very much remember those farming days and still get anxious for the farmers, so good luck to you all.

There’s one more week before school starts, boys and girls. I know some of you are anxious to go

back to see your friends and start a new grade.

Good luck to you and may you all have a good year.

Our deepest sympathy goes out to the families of Sandra Bendfeld (Kroetsch) who passed away last week. Sandra was the daughter of Adolph, deceased, and Verna Kroetsch, formerly of Heisler, now of Camrose. Sandra was married to Bob Benfeld; son of Vener and Norma Bendfeld of Heisler. Sandra resided in Sylvan Lake.

Last weekend was a busy time for the town of Bashaw because, once again, they held chuckwagon and chariot races with a very big crowd on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday afternoon.

The weather didn't cooperate the best, but that did not deter the crowds.

What a great show they put on. It’s so exciting to watch and brings back memories.

It took many great sponsors and the cooper-

ation of the community donating their time to put on this great event.

One of the highlights of the three days was the little chucks with the parents riding in the back; they were hanging on to the children drivers.

Gordie Zimmer’s granddaughter Page, of Strome, was one of the drivers with proud grandpa Gordie there to cheer her on.

After a successful dive-in movie last Thursday, the Forestburg Library will be sponsoring another free dive-in movie on Wednesday, Aug. 28, at the Forestburg Swimming Pool.

Last week, The Incredibles was shown at the outdoor pool with pop and chips available for purchase.

These social events are great ways to get out into the communities and see what each town in Flagstaff has to offer.

Every day I look at Emma Bullee's memorial picture on the library wall, placed there because she was dedicated to the success of this little village library.

I was sad to hear that her husband George followed her into the spirit world this week. And that Bill Steadman had passed on, too.

Both these men were over 91 and were born, raised, and lived as farmers most of their long lives.

Maybe it was their ghosts I heard banging around in the old building; come back, no doubt, to remember their days in the old Lorraine schoolhouse, which is included as part of the library building.

The monthly Alliance farmer’s market last Wednesday was great fun, as there was also a small fall fair organized by the Argyle Women’s Institute.

I was especially impressed by Grace Reis-

ter’s porcupine quill jewelry she entered.

This was a new art form for her. The handicrafts and food for sale were so tempting that I soon spent my allotted money.

I can’t decide if the best thing I bought was two litres of fresh Hutterite honey or the gorgeous crocheted granny shawl coloured with dark greens and turquoise that one of the vendors had made; it was as if it was made especially for me.

Autumn is almost upon us, with a noticeable change in the daylight hours and temperatures. My purple martins, which numbered 14 in the spring, left to go south as a flock of over 40.

Soon the thousands of migratory birds will be here to rest from their wild summer up north.

I noticed the top

leaves of the poplars are starting to yellow and my beautiful flower gardens are well past their peak. I’m harvesting my four legal cannabis plants, which turned out to be a successful experiment.

It has been a great experience filling in at the Alliance Library and getting to know the books and patrons a bit.

In September, the regular library manager, Vickie Cloakey, will be back after having a wonderful visit from her family; who live in Fairview, Oklahoma.

As I peruse the books, putting away those borrowed, I have come across more of local writer Phyllis Alcorn’s books.

The amount of time she has put into researching and publishing about the history and families of this area is quite remarkable. All of her books are available here, as well as the valuable Norman Johnson book collection, donated upon his death.

Thursday morning, after I opened the large,

white, and silent library building for the day and was starting my work, I began to hear noises.

After hearing a loud bang downstairs, I decided to investigate the whole building to ensure there were no intruders or trapped animals.

I opened all the inside doors and the front, outside door, turning on the lights as I went.

There was nothing that seemed out of place, so I left the lights on and went back upstairs.

Of course, as soon as I began working, the noises started again, so I ran downstairs to catch it and, of course, the noise stopped again when I got to the bottom of the stairs.

I could see clearly now the game the ghosts of Alliance past were playing with me, so I determinedly went back to my own work and let them continue their silly attempts to scare me, which I ignored.

Treaty No. 6 Recognition an important milestone After the NDP won the provincial election, most local Councils have started to acknowledge Treaty 6 before each meeting.

Sedgewick Council says the following before their meetings: “Council acknowledges that they are on Treaty 6 territory, a traditional meeting ground, gathering place, and travelling route to the Cree, Saulteaux, Blackfoot, Metis, Dene and Nakota Sioux. Coun-

cil acknowledged all the many First Nations, Metis and Inuit whose footsteps have marked these lands for centuries.”

Indigenous Relations Minister Rick Wilson says, “The people of the Treaty No. 6 First Nations have lived on this land for generations.

“They are an important part of our vibrant history and an integral part of Alberta’s thriving future.”

Stettler RCMP looking for suspects of B&E

On August 20 at approximately 3 a.m., two males entered a Stettler gas station, stealing an undisclosed amount of product.

The males were using a blue older model Dodge Ram during the commission of this offence.

Attached are photos taken from the video surveillance.

Anyone with information about this, or any other crime, are encouraged to call the Stettler RCMP or Crimestoppers.

Treaty No. 6 Recognition Day was created on Aug. 23, marking the 143rd anniversary of the signing of Treaty No. 6.

The treaty is significant to many Indigenous peoples and recognizing it is a step in the right direction after all the hardships First Nations have faced after the treaties were signed all those years ago.

Virginia Weatherly Virginia Weatherly was born to Donald and Fannie Wilder at Hardisty, Alberta, on November 5, 1936, and passed away suddenly on August 20, 2019, at the age of 82 years.

She is survived by her two daughters Darci

Holmes and Kelly Weatherly; granddaughter Tianna Rebalkin (Rory); grandsons Colton Holmes (Frazer), Hunter Weatherly, Donovan Weatherly, multiple honorary children and grandchildren, and her two sisters

Lynda Beach (Bud) and Wanda Anderson (Ron).

Virginia was predeceased by her parents Donald and Fannie Wilder and her son Garth Weatherly.

1973 - 2019 Rick Scheler was born in Daysland, Alberta on March 10, 1973 and passed away suddenly on July 31, 2019 at the age of 46 years .

He will be greatly missed by his best friend and loving wife of 24 years, Candy; his sons Derek, Curtis, and Jared; his parents, Gary and Carol; brother Rob (Heather); niece Alaire Grace; and a host of uncles, aunts, cousins and friends.

His passing has left a huge void in our family and our community. We, his family, are grateful for the outpouring of love and support that we have received. It is appreciated.

Rick was predeceased

by his grandparents; Hardy and May Scheler and Alan and Dorothy Brennan; his uncle Doug Scheler; and cousin Dan Schmaltz.

A Memorial Service for Rick Scheler was held at the Forestburg Community Hall on Aug. 8.

Memorial Donations in Rick’s memory may be made to the Community Enhancement Fund designated to the Forestburg Fire Department; the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Peter Hansen, along with Larry SmerechinskiManager, MP Canada Execution, and Ali HendiSr. Project Engineer from Enbridge, arrived at the Lougheed and District Library on Thursday, Aug. 22 with local contractor Daryl Flynn from F5 Services, to hand out a portion of some new community funding that is directly driven by the construction of Enbridge Line 3 replacement.

Hansen, Sr. Advisor for Enbridge’s Community Relations, says the company consulted with its contractors, locally represented by Techmation, Chemco, and F5 Services, to see what could be done with leftover materials on site.

To date, approximately 110,000 pounds of copper cable - collected and recycled following pump sta-

tion construction - has been exchanged for more than $200,000 that is being pumped back into

communities in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba who stand along the project right-of-way.

The funds are being used to support a variety of initiatives including community hall enhance-

ments, fire protection equipment, environmental stewardship projects, food banks, and more.

The Sedgewick Rough Stock Rodeo had another successful year with some tough stock, a fantastic crowd, and a good show put on by all of the volunteers, riders, and stock. It was a rough ride for all of the competitors as the stock kept the difficulty high, causing many no scores, but also great wins for those who held on long enough.

These two mini Herefords, owned by Teague Wallace, were used for the cow-patty bingo. The two proved to be a little feisty when let ouf their transport trailer into the bingo pen. They were quick to mark a winner, which was Andrew Hampshire with a $1,000 pot, and then were quick to try and make an escape, draggin the pen near 15-feet away from its original position. Wallace was able to safely corral them back into the trailer and take them back to the comforts of home.

On July 6, the Rank Riders 4-H club held our rodeo at Gooseberry Lake. We were supposed to have it on June 23 at the Castor Rodeo Grounds, but, due to poor weather, we ended up having on one of the Neutral Hills 4-H club rodeo days, it was moved.

The rodeo went well, with lots of participants.

On July 21 and 23, eight kids and two adults from our club went hiking in Nordegg for our yearend trip. We left the Burlocks’ house on July 21, stopped in the town of Gull Lake for ice cream, and went to the beach for 15 minutes.

The next stop was the Nordegg Hostel.

Once we got to the hostel we unpacked and then went to Crescent Falls. We looked at the waterfalls, then we went to a river to skip rocks and dunk our

toes in it. That night we had a fire and cooked s’mores.

The next day we woke up early and went to Siffleur Falls, hiking to the first waterfall.

After that we tried to get to the next falls, but

took a wrong turn and got lost.

We ate lunch in a dry river and then tried to find a different trail but it was a dead end. We backtracked and found the trail we were supposed to take, but decided to just go back to

the first falls.

We found a nice place to dip our toes in.

We stopped there for 15 minutes and then finished the hike.

We stopped at the Abraham Lake for an hour. The water came from the glaciers and

because of that, it was freezing! When we got back to the hostel we went in the sauna.

The next morning we went hiking in Nordegg on a little trail. It was a nice trail, but it had rained the night before so the

mosquitoes were terrible. When we finished the hike, we ate lunch and then went home.

All of the kids agreed that it was a fun trip. In the future the kids decided we would like to have another trip like this.

Salute to the RCMP Special Section My name is Noreen Metz; I am the Program Manager for Victim Services serving the County of Flagstaff and the Village of Amisk. We are housed within the Killam RCMP detachment, and I, along with my advocates, have had the honour of working alongside these amazing people in our community member’s darkest hours.

I was asked this year if I would write a salute to our local RCMP, and I immediately said yes.

I have asked a few of our members here in the past why they chose this career path. Their response was always that they’ve wanted to be an RCMP member since they could talk. Every single member said they wanted to make a difference to the communities they served, to help people feel safe, protected, and be of service. One of our members stated he was given a second chance at life, and said he needs to be able to pass that on, to do important work that matters and that can potentially change someone’s life given the right tools. Now, they’ve also said they joined hoping they could drive fast, kick down doors, and chase people. But always, their dream was to be here. Exactly here with us.

We need to salute the Detachment Services Assistants as well. They are also here, in the thick of it, and help the officers through many traumas, either by being an ear when needed, or helping them get the immense amount of paperwork needed. They answer the phones to victims of crime who need support, and information about their cases, or reassurance that all is being done, and will stay on the phone with them until our members can get to them in times of emergencies. They are exposed to everything we are, either directly or indirectly.

When we think of RCMP, we think of protection, arrests, the musical ride, guns, handcuffs, Red Serge, and brown Stetsons. What we don’t often think of is what goes on behind closed doors.... What we don’t see, or know, is the immense sacrifice they make each and every single day. The hours missed with their loved ones, because they are helping someone who is afraid; the school plays, and dance recitals, and hockey games missed because they were on the side of the road at an accident scene, or at someone’s house having to tell them their loved one has died.... The hours and hours of paperwork involved to try and ensure they protect the good guys and help put the bad guys away.... Working 20 hours straight to save a family that’s been abused, and coming back feeling defeated, scared, or exhausted if it didn’t go the way they had hoped, or coming back elated when it does....

What you don’t see is the unpaid hours they give to you and to all of us, to do their very best every single day Noreen Metz when they put on that uniform. And you know what? Sergeant Colin Molinski Colin is a veteran RCMP member who has travelled and worked throughout Canada. Killam is his 10th posting since joining the RCMP, and his seventh province/territory.

He knew from a very young age that he wanted to join the RCMP, to see the country and to serve the people.

He chose to come to Killam after spending the past two years at Depot in Regina teaching, and return to his rural roots, along with his wife and three children. “We’re both very happy that our kids will get to experience rural living.”

Colin was raised in rural Manitoba on a mixed grain and cattle farm, so Flagstaff very much feels like home to him.

Colin has been away from active duty at the Killam Detachment for a few months, but he’s still in the area and can be found in the office at least twice a week.

He took a shift on the dunk tank during the Killam Blacktop Bonanza this year, taking his share of dunks from family and friends, and having a lot of fun.

Corporal Trent Cleveland Acting Sergeant - Detachment Commander - Killam Trent was born and raised in Camrose, where he can trace his roots back four generations, and also has family in the Flagstaff region. Trent came to the Killam Detachment in May of 2017. He has been Acting commander for much of that time, and spent a few months at the Coronation Detachment filling that role.

Trent’s first posting was Fort Vermilion, in northern Alberta, then he transferred to Camrose.

After his post in Camrose, he was transferred to Wetaskiwin, where he worked both urban and rural, until he received a promotion to Corporal and transferred here. He says he prefers the rural setting, “You can’t beat small-town living.”

Trent is married to his childhood sweetheart, they have been together for 18 years, and have four children. The family is very active in sports.

Trent also loves classic cars; he likes to work on his red 1971 Buick GS 455 with his dad and take it to local car shows, “Or just take it out for a drive.”

He believes that working with residents and the public is important for any police force to be effective. His favourite thing about working in Flagstaff is the friendly rural setting where everyone knows everyone’s name.

Constable Travis Norton Flagstaff Community Resource Officer Under an enhanced policing agreement, Flagstaff County provides support for the Community Resource Officer. The Community Resource Officer builds positive relationships with children and youth by participating in school-based activities while focusing on prevention of domestic violence and bullying, with a larger role in cross-sector training and community involvement. Flagstaff County is the largest single contributor to the cost of the CRO, but other municipalities also contribute to a portion of the cost because they believe it brings great value to our region.

Cst. Travis Norton returned from paternity leave earlier this year to step into the role of Community Resource Officer when Cst. Harris left Killam to join the Musical Ride.

Travis has been a member at the Killam Detachment for three years now, and is very excited to step into this new role. He has a lot of ideas for community engagement and education, youth engagement, and more. Expect to hear more about this enhanced policing position this fall.

He is extremely familiar with life in rural Alberta, having grown up in a small village in south-central Alberta.

Travis loves keeping active, and being involved in sports, but especially loves hockey. He’s stepped into coaching roles in Flagstaff, spending time as Assistant coach for the Thunderstars Midget team.

Meet the Detachment members Constable David Boisvert-Cormier Constable David or Constable B-C, as he is often called, was raised in Trois-Rivieres, Quebec. David is fluent in French and English.

He says he decided at a very young age that he wanted to become a police officer.

David came to Killam directly from RCMP Depot in 2017; it was the first time he’d been in Alberta.

When David is not working, he likes to be very active, running, swimming, and training. He’s also very musical: he has mastered a few instruments and wants to learn more.

She was born and raised in Gatineau, Quebec, a community about the size of Red Deer, and says that Alberta was her first choice of postings.

Jacob has wanted to be a member of the RCMP for as long as he can remember. He served in the Canadian Armed Forces Reserves for a few years before beginning his RCMP training.

He loves all sports, especially basketball and soccer, and wouldn’t mind playing some hockey. He enjoys the outdoors, and is an avid hunter.

He says his first impression of the Flagstaff Region was very good, and it’s just kept growing.

Constable Jake Rains Cst. Jake Rains just arrived at the Killam Detachment at the beginning of July.

Jake was born and raised in Nova Scotia. It was a childhood dream of his to join the RCMP. He’s very familiar with small-town life, and says of Flagstaff, “It feels like home, everyone’s really friendly.”

He says the geography is what will take some time to get used too.

Jake grew up playing hockey, he likes to play and to coach.

“Coaching is a great way to get involved.”

He says the other Detachment members and staff have made him feel very welcome.

For 57 years County Peace Officers have been serving the residents and communities of Flagstaff County under the authorization of the Solicitor General of Alberta.

The County currently has two Peace Officers. The Peace Officer’s primary objectives are to ensure public safety, protect County roads and infrastructure through commercial vehicle enforcement, to promote traffic safety on all of our roadways, and ensure public complaints received are handled in a prompt and expedient manner.

In addition to traffic safety, Peace Officers also assist with emergency responses within Flagstaff County. They enjoy a strong relationship with other agencies such as Killam RCMP, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, Fire Departments, and Ambulance Services.

Peace Officers enforce both municipal and provincial traffic statutes.

Peace Officers Skyler Zelinski and Rob Campbell strive to provide quality services to residents within Flagstaff County, with a high level of professionalism and integrity.

Flagstaff Peace Officers have the authority to enforce legislation and regulations relating to: The Traffic Safety Act; The Provincial Offences Procedure Act; The Highways Development and Protection Act; The Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Act; The Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act; and other provincial acts and legislation.

The Peace Officers are also contracted to provide enforcement services for some of the urban municipalities within the County.

Peace Officer Skyler Zelinski Skyler was born in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, but grew up in Red Deer. He’s been in law enforcement for over a decade, and here in Flagstaff eight years now.

Skyler and his wife, with their daughter and the family dog, make their home in Daysland, where he also serves as the Deputy Chief of the Daysland Fire Department.

He really enjoys playing golf, and getting outside as much as possible.

Skyler has found the people in Flagstaff very friendly during his time working here, and says it’s a good place to call home, and now, to raise a family.

Peace Officer Rob Campbell Rob is Flagstaff’s newest Peace Officer, he started in June 2019. He’s about as close to home as you could be, though, because he grew up on a farm near Bawlf.

He got his Criminal Justice degree in Lethbridge, with a policing major. Before coming to Flagstaff, Rob worked in Wetaskiwin, then Leduc as a Peace Officer, he’s been in the field close to two decades.

Rob says he values the relationship that county peace officers have built with RCMP. “It’s the most important relationship we have.”

Rob says that coming back here to work has, in some ways, felt like attending a school reunion, he’s run into so many people he either went to school with or played hockey with over the years.

“In the past, we’ve contributed funds to communities from recycling, but never to this extent.

“It’s exciting to be bringing these new facilities into service for En-

bridge and the Line 3 replacement pipeline,” Dhaliwal adds. “At the same time, we’re very much looking forward to witnessing the many positive outcomes from the community projects supported by our copper recycling program.”

Flynn joked Thursday that the local contractors worked hard to keep the

recycled materials from being stolen before they could be recycled, moving them around often.

Hansen said that the company looked at Lougheed Library as a great recipient for these funds.

The donation, of $5,448.55, will go towards the purchase of new books, says Lougheed Li-

brary Board Chair Janice Bishop, and added that recycling also contributes to another fundraiser the library does each spring, a bottle drive.

Library Board members present thanked Enbridge for their generosity, and ingenuity in recycling leftover materials in this manner.

Burden says that the donation will represent at least two years of book buying for the Library, and was very much appreciated.

Hansen, Smerechinski, and Hendi also visited Hardisty earlier in the day, where they dropped off a cheque from the Enbridge/Techmation/F5 recycling fund at the

Town office with CAO Sandy Otto for $16, 345.66 to support a regional safety initiative.

Enbridge and Chemco also presented another $7,500 to Hardisty Fire and Rescue, and $2,500 to the Hardisty Legion #88, also from the Enbridge Line 3 Replacement Project’s copper recycling program.

Killam We Are Hiring!

News Continued from Page 3 gone, and all of the crowds were indoors for the dinner and dance. But once it started, it seemed to just have poured.

Sunday was the Rough Stock Rodeo at the ag grounds in Sedgewick, and once again it was a rodeo not to be missed!

The ground was a little sloppy, but the wind and sun took care of that by the time the rodeo events began. It was a wild ride from start to finish, with little to no hiccups to slow the pace down.

Although it was a good laugh when the sheep for mutton busting had escaped their encloser.

Thankfully they made quick work of corralling them back to their pen to continue with the rides.

Forestburg is having some 1/8th mile races on Saturday and Sunday! Be sure to head on down to the Area 53 Race Track and see some cool cars rip down the track, which is newly poured. You can find out more in their ad in this week’s paper!

Community Hall Bingo starts up again in September, make sure you keep supporting it, or check it out for the first time if you haven’t.

Happy Labour Day long weekend! We’ll be closed on Monday and open again on Tuesday.

There shouldn’t be any type of delay with the paper, at least not one we plan for.

Walt Disney was fired by a newspaper editor for lack of ideas. Walt Disney also went bankrupt several times before he built Disneyland.

We may never know the name of the “testing director” or the “boss at the newspaper” or hear much about the “strike out record;” what we

do know however is that these individuals pursued dreams regardless of hardship or struggle.

How incredible are God’s plans for each one of us and although we may go through difficult times in our lives, it is important to remember that Jesus’ promises are still in effect. He truly will never

leave us or forsake us.

He is still the same and He will never change.

Trials may come our way but through it all He is faithful and if we remain faithful through

it we will find that it was not really an obstacle but rather a stepping stone to a deeper walk and trust in our precious Father.

When we go through

difficult times, we really do have a choice whether we become better or bitter.
