Cloverlodge Stampede was back in action after a year hiatus due to COVID-19 during the weekend of July 24 and 25. There was a great attendance during both days of action and never a dull moment. The crowd was there to cheer on the competitors, getting extra loud for the local riders. It was a successful weekend at the rodeo grounds.

Brand new sign at Irma Golf Club gathering many compliments Submitted by Kelly Larson-Short On Thursday, July 29, a new sign was installed at the south east corner of the Irma Golf Course. Shown in the photo are Kelly Larson-Short, President and Acting Manager of the Irma Golf Course accepting the donation of the sign from Gwyneth Gulbraa.

Brenda deKock from Hardisty designed the sign. She was given many photos from the Irma Golf Course such as shots of every hole, the two gazebos, a golf cart, and other pretty sights.

The attractive bridge had not yet been installed.

Brenda says, "I was flattered to have been asked by Gwyneth, my long-time friend, to design this sign, but worried because I hadn't done any artwork for

many years. I am very pleased with the outcome!

“I put Gwyneth's golf cart in; I wanted it to have a little piece of her since she asked me to do it. The sign is an artistic collage. which I hope is meaningful to her and the Irma Club, where I always enjoy golfing.

“I have many connections in Irma because I taught there for three years (after Gwyneth's mom retired)."

Ron Rodgers (R2Signs) from Wainwright says that his job was made a great deal easier with Brenda's awesome sketch.

Randy Ganie, groundskeeper worked at levelling the area and removing some trees in preparation. Harold Gulbraa and Steve Raasok installed the sign.

Everyone agrees this new addition looks great.

Word on the Street: mother alleges son assaulted her; son arrested On July 27, police received a complaint of a vehicle that was travelling down the highway and the front tires appeared to be shaking.

Patrols were made but the vehicle in question was not located.

On July 28, during a routine traffic stop, the driver of the vehicle was showing signs of impairment. The driver of the semi truck was administered an alcohol screening test which resulted in a caution. The driver of the truck was subsequently suspended from driving for three days and fined $300 and his truck was seized for three days.

That afternoon, police received a complaint of a theft of plants from a garden and flowerpots.

The subject entered the complainants’ yard and pulled plants from her garden and flowerpots.

This matter is still under investigation.

That same afternoon, police received a complaint of mischief. The complainant found a rock on his property and believed it was going to be used to damage his property.

Later that afternoon, police received a complaint of an erratic driver. The complainant advised he was transporting a wide load and

travelling at 60 km/hr when a vehicle passed his vehicle on the wrong side of the road while another vehicle was passing him properly on the highway. Both vehicles narrowly missed causing a vehicle collision. This matter is still under investigation.

That evening, police received a complaint of a suspicious vehicle driving around a rural location.

The complaint advised the vehicle had a female driver inside.

When the complainant attempted to obtain a licence plate the vehicle sped off. Patrols were made in the area but the vehicle was not located.

That same evening, police responded to a complaint of an assault.

The complainant advised that her son assaulted her. The 23year-old male was located and arrested. He will be facing assault charges.

On July 29, police were advised of a theft from a motor vehicle. The complainant advised his wallet, containing all his personal information, was taken out of his unlocked vehicle. To date there have been no suspects identified in this theft.

That afternoon, police were notified of a subject who possibly had outstanding warrants was seen in Viking. Patrols

were made in attempts to locate the subject, but the subject in question was not located.

That same afternoon, police received a complaint of a theft from a motor vehicle. The complainant advised he parked his truck and trailer along the roadway. The complainant was test-driving a hot rod with a potential client. When the complainant returned from the test drive, he observed a male inside of his truck and a black Nissan vehicle in the

ditch. When the complainant approached his vehicle, the male jumped out of his truck and into the Nissan and sped off.

The complainant advised that his keys were missing from inside of his vehicle and a package of cigarettes.

This matter is still under investigation.

On the evening of July 29, police were called to a rural location for a possible domestic dispute.

Upon arrival, it was learned that a 25-yearold female was having a See RCMP P14

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Dear Editor, Alberta continues to be an afterthought to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s agenda and for proof, look no further than his latest Senate nomination to fill a vacant seat in Alberta. Albertans have chosen to elect senators. Yet Justin Trudeau ignored this and instead pursued his own partisan agenda.

These criticisms are not a personal attack against the newest senator, Ms. Sorensen, nor an attempt to undermine her experi-

ence or qualifications, but rather a criticism against how the Prime Minister chose to circumvent Alberta’s wishes.

As a Conservative MP from Alberta, I hear daily how the Canadian Federation in a precarious position. It is clear: Justin Trudeau either doesn’t care about tearing the country apart, or it is part of his political agenda to maintain power at any cost.

Either way, Albertans and all Canadians deserve better. If you

feel the Prime Minister has disregarded Alberta and hurt the unity of Canada, you can let him know at Justin.Trudeau@parl.gc.ca.

Irma U16 softball Tigers end the season with gold Leslie Cholowsky Staff Reporter

After spending the 2020 season mostly in hiatus, the U16 Irma Tigers were raring to go when Softball Alberta opened up the 2021 season, says coach Kelly Pauls.

The team plays in the GPLS league, and ended this year’s season with silver.

Pauls says the girls couldn’t use the school to start practicing for the season as they normally would, so started up at the Irma Arena as soon as the ice was out.

In mid-May, outdoor practices began, and the team travelled to Sherwood Park mid June for the first games of the season, then hosted the league on July 2 to 4, with

34 teams in Irma, playing 80 games.

Most of the games were played in Irma, but some were played in Wainwright.

The final weekend was July 16-18. The team were league champs going in, winning every game but their last, ending the season with silver.

The Tigers hosted provincials the weekend

of July 23-25, with 14 U16B teams, Pauls says, with eight senior mens teams also playing that weekend. “We know how to put on a ball tournament!” he says.

The Tigers lost their first game, played 8 a.m.

Friday, but won the next three. They had to wait until the very last game on Sunday to find out if they would have to play a

tie-breaker, which they did not.

The final, against Camrose, was a nail biter, with the team down 5-0 at the top of the fourth.

“The girls rallied, with five runs in the fourth. We gave up two in the bottom of the inning.

“By the seventh, we were down by one. The girls rallied, and got three runs at the top of the seventh, then held them two no runs on the bottom, with two strike-outs, and an infield grounder.”

Pauls says, “After that, there weren’t too many feet on the ground!”

He says the crowd was tremendous, with the stands full, and the game even stealing fans from the adjacent men’s game.

“The girls told me later that they were pretty nervous playing in front of such a large crowd.”

Pauls says the Tigers are really a regional team, with players from Irma, Wainwright, Provost, Sedgewick, and as far as Kitscoty.

“Most of the girls have

played together five years or more.” He’s been with most of them for quite a while, and says it’s been a great journey.

“It’s so nice to be back to normal, to be able to line up and shake hands with the opposing team again.”

Next year, due to some changes in the age brackets, the team won’t change much.

“It’s a lot of fun,” says Paul, “and I feel very proud as a coach.

“It was quite an enjoyable year.

“It’s nice to be back to normal, and to kick a little butt, and come home with some hardware” The U16 Tigers are: Livia Zajic, Caris Erickson, Jaclyn Holowaychuk, Megan Pauls, Gracyn Mackay, Hudson King, Kamryn Miller, Kelsey Price, Brittin Schwab, Blair Heck, Dalcela Yehia, and Hope Verhoeven.

The bulls were tough competition and made for a good show as hooves left the ground and cowboys sent sailing. The wild pony races had surprisingly quick competitors, and kept everyone effortlessly entertained. The weather was perfect for riding.

Bruce Stampede enjoyed by many far and wide

The 107th annual Bruce Stampede went off without a hitch this past weekend with great crowds throughout.

The popular event had to cancel last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Camrose MLA Jackie Lovely was on hand to take in the event. “An incredibly big thank you goes out to Bruce Stampede President, Robbie Chomik and his board,” stated Lovely. “There was a good chance due to restrictions at the time of organizing the event that the Stampede was possibly going to be cancelled. I want to thank Robbie and his team for the extra effort in working with AHS to come up with Plan 2 to proceed with the Stampede. Fortunately, for the event, Alberta was the first Province to open on July 1 and the event could proceed as usual.”

Sunday hosted several hours of exciting pro rodeo action at Bruce Stampede featuring a number of the usual events. More coverage can be found in this week’s edition of The Weekly Review.

Tree planting discussion to shape Global Foundation’s annual meeting Moush John The tree planting hosted by Beaver County’s Global Foundation for Social Harmony & Sustainable Development (GFoundation) in June will inform a lot of the discussions members are looking forward to at the foundation’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) later this month, Sunday, Aug. 22.

“While our members are enthused by what we’ve been able to accomplish in the past year, we all realize that more residents and landowners must become

engaged for our efforts to yield desired results,” said Winston Gereluk, GF President. “Recent forest fires and other weather events show us that quantum leaps are needed to address the scope of the climate problem.”

Six hundred trees were planted in June, according to Gereluk, broken up by weather into several events, stretching over a week.

“Volunteers were enriched by the camaraderie and direct hands-on interaction with each other and nature,” he added. “The GFoundation now assumes

ongoing care for about 8,000 trees since its planting began eight years ago.

“The organization’s tree planting serves to boost biodiversity, protect or restore wetlands, and beef up climate change resiliency. However, more actors are needed to join in the action.”

The AGM, which is scheduled to take place at 1 p.m. will have GFoundation members, volunteers, and observers meet at the Spilstead Community Hall to discuss among other things, the following agenda.

•The UN-designated Beaver Hills

Biosphere, where the foundation is located.

•Protecting and restoring wetlands through stewardship with GFoundation’s neighbours, encompassing 8,000 acres in the Biosphere.

•Linking residents and landowners living in the common sub-watershed that flows into the North Saskatchewan River.

•Treaty Six land recognition, followed by a special event at the GFoundation after the meeting.

•GFoundation’s 20th Anniversary celebrations in 2022.

Province investing toward improved rural and remote internet services Leslie Cholowsky Service Alberta Minister Nate Glubish, along with Premier Jason Kenney, made an announcement about investing $150 million into improving rural, remote, and indigenous internet services.

The announcement was made from the Augustana U of A Campus in Camrose on Thursday, July 22, with Camrose MLA Jackie Lovely introducing the speakers.

Glubish said as he tours Alberta, one of the most consistent topics that arises is frustration with limited connectivity.

He said back in 2005, the Province invested in bringing a Supernet connection to every town and village, but hasn’t really done anything since that time.

“I’ve toured the province, and most communities have concerns about broadband connectivity.

“It impacts the lives of Albertans when rural businesses are unable to expand or grow due to a lack of connectivity.

“As well, rural Albertans pay well above their urban counterparts for subpar internet.”

Glubish said that he can see first-hand the difficulties that rural communities have in attracting new business without broadband.

“It’s no longer a luxury,” he added.

He said that by improving internet availability and service, it will make it more attractive to promote rural living with remote workplaces.

Glubish said that technology growth has experienced 200 per cent growth in Alberta over the past decade, stressing that connectivity is essential to maintaining that growth.

“This has incredible potential if we get this right.”

8. Submission of a tender by a Tenderer gives the County the right to require the Tenderer to execute the contract to perform the Work as set out within the tender documents. Tenders may not be withdrawn after the Tender Closing and will be irrevocable and open for acceptance by the County for a period of sixty (60) days following the end of the day of the Tender Closing. The Successful Tenderer will be notified in writing.

Glubish said that with this initial investment, the Province hopes to work with the federal government and private industry to bring the resources necessary to improve connectivity.

“There’s no single solution to the issue, but I am dedicated to finding a solution.”

He said how and where the funding will be allocated is a decision yet to be made.

Construction Update Over the next few weeks, Range Road 132 from Parrish & Heimbecker to Township Road 482 and Township Road 482 from Range Road 132 to Highway 36 will be having spot repairs done.

During this construction phase, portions of the road may be closed to allow crews to work safely. Please use another route. Error on Tax Notices

Public Hearing: Surface Drainage Bylaw

The County has been made aware of an error on the tax notices. The date for the January penalty reads “January 16, 2021” instead of “January 18, 2022”.

Beaver County Council has given first reading to a Surface Drainage Bylaw and is now inviting public input.

The error does not render the tax notices invalid. Payment is still due by November 1, 2021 to avoid a 6% late payment penalty. Unpaid taxes after November 1, 2021 are due

by January 17, 2022 to avoid the second late payment penalty of an additional 3%.

The Surface Drainage Bylaw will enable the County to investigate drainage-related complaints wherever the County has jurisdiction over drainage and waterbodies. This applies primarily to the registered subdivisions in Divisions One and Two. Surface water diversions on agricultural lands remain under the jurisdiction of Alberta Environment and Parks and may require an authorization from Alberta Environment and Parks.

2021 Municipal Election 2021 is the year of municipal elections and October 18, 2021 is Election Day. In the past, submission of nominations was restricted to one day only. The Local Authorities Election Act has been amended to extend the time period during which nominations can be filed.

The new Nomination Period is January 1, 2021 to noon on Monday, September 20, 2021. At any time during this period, a candidate may submit a Nomination Form. The Nomination Form as well as a Candidate Information Package is available on the County’s website at www.beaver.ab.ca/council/2021-municipal-election. The County’s Surface Drainage Bylaw prohibits the alteration of the surface elevation or grade of any property (public or private) if such work creates a nuisance or danger, adversely affects the stability of a slope, alters an on-site storm water management system, or alters the elevation of an adjacent property. The Bylaw also restricts naturally occurring drainage features or easements from being filled, drained, or redirected.

Enforcement of the Bylaw includes the power of a County Designated Officer to enter onto the property (after reasonable notice is given) to carry out an inspection and obtain information. The Designated Officer may issue a fine for contravention of the Bylaw and/or may issue an Order to a person to return the property to its original state. The costs incurred for the remediation action are the responsibility of the landowner or the person who caused the contravention.

The library is open again on Monday and Wednesday evenings and the children’s programming goes on Tuesdays.

Our sympathy to Pastor Wayne and Louise Sykes of Avonglen church after the passing of his sister. The Sykes travelled to Hamilton, Ontario, for the funeral service.

Congratulations and best wishes to Scott Oracheski and Kim Nyugen who were married on the weekend in

Calgary.

Congratulations to the U19 Girls on winning the silver medal in their fastball provincials in Medicine Hat on the weekend. These girls played their games in extremely hot temperatures. They are coached

by Dan Larson and Dale Mitchell.

Greg and Darla Fischer are enjoying a visit with their new grandson Logan, daughter Madison and her husband Matt from Virginia.

Investigation revealed that the female had outstanding warrants from Stettler RCMP. The female was arrested for the outstanding warrants and was later released from police custody to appear in Stettler Provincial Court.

On July 30, police received a complaint of an erratic driver. The complainant stated that a vehicle struck a fire hydrant and a road sign, and then continued driving away. The vehicle in

question was located with extensive front-end damage. A traffic stop was initiated, while speaking with the driver signs of impairment were observed.

The female refused to provide a breath sample on an alcohol-screening device. Charges are pending against a 70year-old female, who will be required to attend Vegreville Provincial Court.

On July 31, police responded to a SOS message that was received from a cell phone in the Bruce area.

A male advised members that his daughters’ cell phone

was sending a SOS message with GPS. Immediate patrols were made and the 27-yearold female was located and spoken to.

She advised she was not in distress and will contact her father.

In the early morning of August 1, police received a complaint of possible intoxicated drivers in the area of Bruce. No details were provided by the complainant, patrols were made and no vehicles were located.

That evening, police attempted to stop a vehicle that was exceeding the posted speed limit.

Once emergency equipment was activated, the vehicle fled and police were unable to locate the vehicle.

In the early morning hours of August 2, police responded to a complaint of a 36-year-old female who was having a psychotic episode. The female was located

camping in the Viking area and she was refusing assistance from EMS. Police assisted EMS, who were able to transport the female to the hospital for further assessment.

That evening, police responded to a complaint of a violent assault. Police attended the location and learned

the victim had been transported to the hospital by her common-law husband for assessment.

This matter is currently under investigation.

During this period, police also issued several violation tickets for various traffic infractions and dealt with minor traffic collisions.

Irma Tigers U19 girls team brings home provincial Silver Leslie Cholowsky Staff Reporter

The Irma Tigers U19 Softball team won Silver medals in Provincials, held over the August long weekend in Medicine Hat. Coach Dale Mitchell says the team plays in the GPLS League during the regular season, playing two major tournaments that seed each team for the finals.

“We ended up 5-5 in the league and were seeded sixth in the league tournament held at Stony Plain July 17-18.”

The Tigers played thirdseed Medicine Hat and beat them 3-2 in a “great, seven-inning game that lasted an hour and t10 minutes.”

Then they took on the second seed, the Elnora Eagles and defeated them 7-4, advancing to the semi finals.

The semi final saw the Tigers face off against first-seed Central Albert Extreme. “We pounded them 10-0 in five innings.

This was a major upset, but we pitched well, hit everything, and played great defence.”

The Tigers headed to the finals where they again faced the Extreme again in a double knockout.

“After getting off to a great 5-1 lead, we saw it evaporate in the later innings. In the final at bat, with a score of 6-5 Tigers, Extreme his a bases-

loaded bomb that saw the Extreme score two runs, putting them up 7-6.

“We had to settle for the silver medal overall, but the girls played fantastic the whole weekend.”

In Medicine Hat at provincials the girls came up against the Extreme again, losing 6-5 in the first game.

They then won three games straight over Calgary, Elnora, and Red Deer.

Mitchell says, “We lost to the Elnora Eagles Pennock in the one-two page system, then beat our arch rivals Extreme 44 in the two-three game.

“This was a fantastic win for our girls!”

The Tigers lost the gold medal game 15-8 to Elnora.

“It was our third game of the day, and the girls battled their hearts out.

“When we took our team picture at the end it was 39 degrees!”

Mitchell says, “I’m very proud of our girls and coaching staff.

“We battled hard all tournament and received compliments from the other teams about how we play the game the right way.”

Mitchell says he can’t go without thanking TigerNation, for those fans who travelled to Medicine Hat or followed the results on social medial.
