Nicolas Zachoda, centre, walked away with first prize and bragging rights in the Babas Borshch Cook Of f held on Sunday , August at the Andrew Community Centre. Runner Up was C leadership hopeful and MLA Thomas Lukaszuk, right, and third place was awarded to former Andrewite Matt Levicki. Both Levicki, last year s runner up, and Lukaszuk vowed to be back ne t year to win the big bowl and the championship title in the culinary event.

Babas Borshch Ukrainian Festival got a healthy financial shot in the arm from the province as organizers and supporters were presented with a cheque for more than , . Fort Saskatchewanegreville MLA Jacquie Fenske, third from right, with the assistance of MLA Thomas Lukaszuk, second from right, made the cheque to festival co-ordinator Hazel Anaka, on the far right. Also on hand for the presentation was Andrew Mayor Heather Tait, and Lamont County councillors Roy Anaka, far left, and an arawa.

Thirteen-year-old Nicholas achoda had a secr et weapon of his own that he used to earn the bragging rights and first place in the Babas Borshch Ukrainian Festival borshch cook off on Sunday, Aug. 24 in Andrew. The enterprising St. Michael ar ea chicken rancher actually put an egg in his borshch, and that special ingredient sealed the deal with celebrity judges Jackie Rae-Greening, Anastasia Martin-Stilwell, and Gail Hall. The grandson of last year’s winner Helen achoda, was all smiles, and fellow cook of f contestants and spectators couldn’t r esist photographing his one-ofa-kind embroidered apron that said: When it comes to borscht my Baba taught me everything she knows Fellow contestant and r unner up Thomas Lukas uk, was slightly disappointed with his second place finish, and vowed to return ne t year to win the title. Also promising to return was third place winner Matt Levicki. During a short interview with F W radio celebrity Jackie Rae-Greening, achoda said, Eggs ar e my thing. It was his grandpa who suggested adding the egg to the borshch. Last fall, Nicholas built a chicken co-op with his father , and now he has 4 chickens. Although, Nicholas says he will be selling 1 of them to his cousin. During the school year , Nicholas sold eggs to the teachers at Lamont High, which was a very successful venture. Second place winner Thomas Lukas uk had his secret weapon at his side, his mother Halina. Festival co-ordinator and cook off host Ha el Anaka, pointed out that Lukas uk was Polish, but wouldn’t hold that against him since it was an equal opportunity contest. Lukas uk laughed and said his strategy was to throw everything in the pot and pray that something good comes of it, much the same as politics and if he fails to become Alberta’s ne t premier, Lukas uk said maybe the Borshch thing could work out as Plan B . Borshch Cook Off contestants add spicy entertainment factor Cont’d from Page 1 Third place winner Matt Levicki was impressed by the turn out, and said his Dad Terry Levicki was hoping the contest would also include other traditional Ukrainian foods in the future. Levicki said he was using the same recipe as last year , and noted that he is trying to

learn other Ukrainian dishes from his Dad, before presenting each of the judges with a souvenir. Other contestants had interesting stories and remarks which added a lot of flavour to the afternoon’s festivities, and each of them wer e commended for their efforts. Opinion

Rebuttal from Lamont Minor Hockey President With every Association comes r ules, regulations and Bylaws; from figure skating to gymnastics, acro to minor hockey. These rules and regulations, along with Bylaws are put in place to clarify, answer questions and guide the registered teams, parents and members alike. Hockey Alberta has r ules and r egulations as well as Bylaws that we, as an Association, must follow and adhere to. Lamont Minor Hockey Association has our own set of Bylaws for our Executive and Membership; these Bylaws have been approved by Hockey Alberta. Our Mission Statement is “to strive through the opportunity of the hockey pr ogram to develop better citizens through sportsmanship, gr owth, leadership, socialization and integrity at all levels. T o promote and encourage the formation of teams and leagues with positive and productive participation throughout the program for the betterment of the participant.” As per Hockey Alberta Bylaws, Article 6.3 “Players must play in the Local Minor Hockey Association within those Boundaries they r eside where said Boundaries have been established, mutually agr eed upon by Associations and/or r ecognized by Hockey Alberta”, there is no option to “pick and choose” wher e you play hockey. The exceptions to that r ule are if ther e is no hockey team in the player ’s resident Local Minor Hockey Association in his/her age division, if the team is full at 19 players, if the player is female and wishes to play female hockey or if the player intends to try out for an Elite AAA team. That player would then r equire a permission to try out form, these forms may be r efused in situations where granting of permission to the player leaves the Local Minor Hockey Association with insufficient numbers to field a hockey team at the players age division, therefore leaving 7 childr en without the ability to play for the season. A permission to try out form may also be refused if the player is requesting the permission for reasons other than playing at the highest category of which he/she is capable (ie dislike of a coach, dislike of ice time etc.) Lamont Minor Hockey Association’s Bylaws include a Code of Ethics for the Executive, Players and Parents; for the betterment and the longevity of the Association, pending all waivers, r eleases and permissions to try out the Executive shall reserve the right to accept and r etain players into our Minor Hockey Association. It is the Lamont Minor Hockey Associations intention that all players wishing to play in our Association be accepted as members. The Association has never refused a permission to try out form for a player at the Elite AAA Category, those forms are signed and sent with the Associations well wishes to the player; Lamont Minor Hockey Association strives to allow every player , parent and member the respect, dignity and equality that people deserve. Regards, Deb Eleniak President, Lamont Minor Hockey Association.

Heartland Ag. Days in Bruderheim broke an all time attendance record! Even Wayne Schoepp, President of the Bruderheim Agricultural Society, had to do a double take when he saw the attendance numbers to be well over 7,000 people. “We put Br uderheim on the map,” stated Schoepp during a follow up telephone interview . Schoepp attributes the spike in attendance, about 4,000 higher fr om previous years to the fact that they combined the Smash & Bash event and the Heartland Ag. Days event into one big event. “By combining the two events we wer e more successful.” Schoepp says ther e was quite a bit of enthusiasm generated fr om last year’s Smash & Bash, and that’s why more spectators wer e in the stands during the three day event. Ther e was something for everyone, there was more variety of activities, and the action was steady for all three days. Schoepp also cr edits the amount and variety of different advertising

nicipa ities are the key in meetin st dents needs says oard chair Elk Island Public Schools’ (EIPS) Boar d of Trustees works with a number of municipal councils. In fact, we work with five dif ferent town councils, one city council, and three different county councils. Although each of these municipalities are unique, what they have in common is they are all key partners in meeting the needs of students. Last spring, we met with five of the nine councils, and additional meetings will take place this coming school year . The frequency of these meetings and what is discussed varies depending on the si e of the community and the number and types of schools we have in the

rson ca se of i iard fire On July 2 at 2:1 a.m. the Vegreville R MP responded to a vehicle fire in the V illage of Hilliard. An older model Ford truck wasparked outside of a local business when it was found on fire. The investigation has determined the cause of the fire to be arson. Vegreville R MP would like to thank the concerned citi ens of Hilliard who r eported the fire, as well as encourage anyone with any information about this investigation to contact the V egreville Detachment or rimestoppers. The Vegreville R MP

can advise that the house arson reported on August 21, in Vegreville is not related to this occurrence.

area. Some may be surprised by how much school boards rely on our municipalities to support what we do. We look to our municipalities for traffic safety, law enforcement, emergency services, providing land for new schools (including recreational spaces), snow removal along bus routes, road ways to maneuver school buses, sidewalks, crosswalks, public transit, bylaws, various social services to support students and staff, property maintenance, parking, and the list goes on. Our spring meetings covered all of these topics and then some. W e also discussed economic growth, population pr o-

jections, demographics, and future residential development. As a school board, it’s important for us to know where our futur e students will likely live so we can determine how to best accommodate changes in population. We shared information with our municipal partners about the pr ograms and services EIPS pr ovides at our local schools. We also talked about how students and the community can both benefit from reciprocal facility use agreements. Each council shar ed with us their vision and how EIPS fits into that vision. T ogether we identified shared interests and opportunities to join our voices together

in advocating to the Government of Alberta. Each of these conversations are vital in our ability to support each other. The r elationships the Board of T rustees develops with local reeves, mayors, and councillors is key in our ability to meet the needs of our students and the communities we both serve.

i h ay ei ht an and p radin iss es to e hashed d rin pcomin meetin Michelle Pinon Editor Local MLA Jacquie Fenske and members of Lamont ounty council will be meeting with officials from Alberta Transportation on Aug. 2 to discuss the ongoing per cent ban on Highway 2 and the adverse effect it is having on local producers. Fenske, who called a previous meeting with council and pr oducers on Aug. 1 , stated that an engineering study is currently underway to determine what is required in terms of upgrades in or der to have the ban lifted. That doesn’t help the producers today as they prepare for harvest, and the ban suspension that was in place this spring is no longer available to farmers, pointed out Fenske. This, along with the diversion of traf fic onto county grid r oads and

the abuse of those r oads formed the majority of the conversation, she added in r eference to Aug. 1 meeting that was held in St. Michael with 2 pr oducers in attendance. I called the meeting to ask the producers and council to work with me to identify the issues and the costs they wer e bearing because of the per cent ban on Highway 2 . Earlier in the year, on a conference call with local farmers, the minister indicated he would be supporting an overlay, noted Fenske. She went on to say that two step solution is required. First, to accommodate the harvest especially to those yards that dir ectly access Highway 2 and secondly, to get the overlay and base work onto the provincial three year plan so it can be funded. During Lamont

ounty council’s Aug. 1 continuation meeting, a motion was made by coun. Robert Malica to have the road ban lifted as it is a key transportation link within the municipality and request the immediation rehabilitation of Highway 2 . The motion passed unanimously. oun. Roy Bryks also r ecommended council obtain letters of support fr om other counties in relation to its request. It is imperative that something be done about Highway 2 , said coun. Bryks, who was disappointed ther e was no r epresentation from Alberta Transportation at the Aug. 22 meeting. I’m appalled no ef fort was made by Jacquie to have representation from Alberta Transportation at that meeting. Bryks added that some producers have been able to get permits

and others have not. It doesn’t make sense at all. Reeve W ayne Woldanski wondered aloud why Alberta Transportation doesn’t just repair the section that needs to be done instead of waiting to do an overlay While some producers have been lobbying on their own, W oldanski said council needs to write a letter of its own to get the issue front and center. The r oad ban has been on for the last three years and nothing happened, pointed out Woldanski. The last 1 years, added Bryks. Allan Warshawski, who has lived beside Highway 2 for years, says the r oad ban has been problematic for several years now . He doesn’t want to r un the risk of being caught overloaded when traveling to the grain elevator. ou’re not legal. But he doesn’t want to be per cent farmer for

A per cent road hauling ban on Highway has been a source of concern and frustration to local producers in recent years, and will be the focal point of discussions between Lamont County council, local MLA Jacquie Fenske, and Alberta Transportation officials during a closed meeting slated for Aug. . the ne t five years. Warshawski also doesn’t like the prospect of waiting thr ee to five years to be put on the capital plan to have an overlay put on a portion of Highway 2 . The wait could be longer than that if you get bumped, noted Warshawski.

While the ban is not severely affecting him personally, Warshawski said it is so much mor e difficult for commer cial haulers as they have more loads and additional financial costs as a result of lighter loads and rerouting of loads.
