Visitors to the 2015 Babas & Borshch Ukrainian Festival had a lot to take in, everything from a borshch cooking class to pyrogy dance lessons to the outdoor music jam to name a few of the activities, demonstrations and tours of local historic sites. Guests at the Zabava learned the perogy dance courtesy of festival ambassador Baba Magda. Edmontonians Zoe and Finn Rush were just two of the visitors who graciously posed for a photo for the paparazza. Helen Zachoda, was chosen as the 2015 Borshch Cookoff Champion. It was the second time the Mundare area Baba has won the title since the festival始s inception three years ago. First to congratulate her was grandson Nicholas Zachoda, last year始s champion, Zachoda poses with the esteemed panel of judges following the cookoff.

Heartland Primary Care Volunteers set the stage for the Network seeking clarity first ever blues and country on provincial funding

Ever since Alberta’s Health Minister told reporters that she hasn’t made a “guarantee or promise of any kind” regarding the reinstatement of funding for Primary Care Networks (PCN) several weeks ago, the news has created confusion among health officials and members of the general public alike.

One of the people scratching their head is Graham Kitson, Executive Director of the Heartland PCN. “We are currently working with Alberta Health on clarifying the issue and will be in a better position to comment once clarification is established,” stated Kitson last Friday.

In early July the Heartland PCN issued a news release on the reinstatement of government funding. At that time Graham stated, “We are Graham Kitson grateful to the government for their decision to reverse the proposed cuts to Primary Care Networks. This is an investment into the future of our Heartland communities.”

Earlier in the month, Hoffman announced that $75 million in funding that was cut by the PC government would be fully restored to PCN’s.

According to a recent Edmonton Journal article, Hoffman was quoted as saying, “Rather than saying they (PCN’s) need to use it all this year to meet basic operations, we have said status quo while we are doing this financial review. We are not clawing back $76 million, we’re not adding $75 million.

We’re maintaining current levels of funding.”

The NDP government is currently conducting a financial review, and specifics will be released when the budget is presented in the legislature this fall.

Extensive vandalism to Sunset Park in Bruderheim will cost taxpayers more than $10,000.

Patty Podoborozny, Chief Administrative Officer for the Town of Bruderheim, stated, “Total costs to ratepayers, including staff time for repairs, has exceeded ten thousand dollars.”

Bruderheim Mayor Karl Hauch expressed his dismay. “The graffitti that was found recently in Bruderheim at Sunset Park was disheartening to say the least. These senseless acts are certainly sad to see.”

But Hauch firmly believes that it is “a very, very small minority of people taking part in vandalism” in the community. “I also believe if these folks knew the true cost to the residents who pay the taxes in our town, maybe they would think twice before taking money from other peoples pockets in such a selfish manner.”

On a positive note, Hauch added that the clean up was quick, and the park equipment was returned to its original condition quickly. “A big thank you to our town CAO Pat, town administration and public works staff for quickly and effectively dealing with this mess!”

Hauch said it was necessary to include a “huge reminder” to folks to attend the upcoming Heartland Citizens On Patrol meeting on Tuesday, August 25 at 7 p.m. in the new RCMP station in Fort Saskatchewan. “Sign up to support your community!”

CAO Podoborozny stated that recent vandalism in Bruderheim has occurred at the skateboard park, basketball court, beach volleyball court, flower containers, garbage and recycle containers and smashed windows and benches inside the outdoor arena change shack.

Podoborozny also listed some examples as to what $10,000 could do for the community.

A rash of vandalism over the course of the summer in Hillside Park has prompted the Town of Lamont to issue a public statement.

Last Friday, Deputy Chief Administrative Officer Elaine Milliken, issued a news release stating, “Over the course of the past few months, vandalism has increased in the area of Hillside Park. We are asking resi-

dents in the area to report anything out of the ordinary...”

Milliken went on to say, “These incidents cost money, time and resources every time something has to be repaired or replaced. We are developing the space to be a multi-purpose site for families and residents of all ages to enjoy, but we get set back every time we have to attend to continued damage.”

The damage Milliken is referring to includes:

smashing doors on numerous occasions, and causing damage to the washrooms at the cook shack. “It (Hillside Park) is a great area for families and people of all ages to enjoy, but a select few have chosen to ruin it for the majority.”

Milliken pointed out that any information provided to the town office by residents will remain confidential, and will be relayed to the RCMP. Residents can also call RCMP as well.

Opinion Letter to the Editor

Former Lamont resident proponent of graveyard maintenance Dear Editor, After hearing a complaint of the untidy condition of the Lutheran Golden Valley Grave Yard of our Viking, Alberta; where most of my husband Olaf Nordstrom’s family is buried, I couldn’t help feeling both sad and concerned about the end of families or many relocating another province with no one left to maintain the burial plots and lack of grass cutting or other care. Without maintenance, these grave yards could become like the First Nations burial

grounds only discovered when industry discovers the ancestral bones.

I was born and raised in Lamont, Alberta. We have lived in Nanaimo, BC for many years.

When I returned to a July Lamont High School reunion in 1999 and visited the United Church Hacket cemetery north of Lamont, I discovered my father’s cremated bones with bits of backbone on top of the large plot of my grandparents and two aunts. There is a tall granite obelisk in the centre naming those buried there including

my father Malcolm Alton. He died in October of 1955.

I was shocked, but learned my mother had earlier that year at age 89 been driven by car out to the Hacket graveyard and dumped the cremation urn out in the snow.

I returned a few days later with a shovel and bucket hoping to dig up some soil from the farmers field and spread it over his bones, only to discover the big ride ‘em lawn mower had spread my father’s bones all over the grave yard. (I reasoned he knew every

one anyway.)

The Hacket graveyard has kept the grave stones upright instead of flat stones or markers, away from lawn mowers scratching the flat ones or being chipped. The raised beds of flowers fared much better than the unfenced graves.

Graves are very important. So many interesting messages like, “Jack Jones, (not his real name), member of the Parry Sound, Ontario settlers train to take up land around Lamont.”

Which of course my grandparents, Joe and

Mary Alton, and their four kids were part of and came to raw land and built a farm. My aunt Janet was born in 1905 and my dad in 1909.

Mr. Hacket donated land for the United Church graveyard as my grandfather Joe Alton donated land to the United Church of Canada for a teaching hospital to be built in Lamont. My mother graduated from nursing in 1931 and married my father the same year.

I would hope that wherever this letter reaches, that graveyards

would be taken seriously and maintained, and the head stone history continued. Many places have a cement block wall with name and history plaques stuck to them as so many are being cremated and not buried, this is a record. “Faith, of our father’s living still we will be true to thee till death.”

Show Your Gratitude Please Perhaps Lamont County Reeve Wayne Woldanski said it best.

During Woldanski’s remarks and greetings to guests at the Zabava on Saturday evening in Andrew when he personally thanked the volunteers of the Babas & Borshch Ukrainian Festival.

He called the work “extraordinary” and simply stated that there would be no festival without them.

While his comments seem redundant and perhaps unnecessary to some people, the people who are donating their time and talents to the event should be formally recognized.

Scott Reid, President of the Chipman Agricultural Society, was also grateful for the volunteers who came out to a final planning meeting last Wednesday for this this weekend’s Blues and Country Festival in Chipman. Reid said there were approximately 70 volunteers who attended that meeting at the Chipman National Hall on Aug. 19.

Special mention should also go out to volunteers who assisted with the Heartland Ag. Days this past weekend in Bruderheim.

So next time you see a volunteer in your community, thank them.

Harmony ready to make music in Lamont Sept. 1 Michelle Pinon Editor

Come one. Come all!

It’s an open invitation to anyone who enjoys music to come out to free concert at the Beaverhill Lodge in Lamont on Tuesday, Sept. 1 at 2:30 p.m.

The group Harmony, which has been entertaining in the Vegreville area for nearly 20 years will be bringing their unique brand of music to

lodge residents, visitors, and community members that afternoon.

“You just have to get involved and participate if you can. That’s it,” says Phyllis Tarapacki, who sings and plays mini bongo drums with the group.

“Peter Karbashewski is our devoted guitarist. Steve Mudryk plays the accordion and does a great job, and his wife Iris plays percussion for us.”

Tarapacki went on to say that they have

acquired violinist John Kusick, and are pleased with how he fits in with the group. “John not only plays the violin, but also sings...of which gives us more variety to our show.” Tarapacki is the MC during performances, and she also does vocals, instrumentals, stories and jokes. “Of course there is some dancing,” she adds.

“Music is very good therapy for all of us as it stimulates our body and makes us happy. It is also

a healer, so whether you are young or old, we need music in our lives be it a fast polka or a slow hymn. Just understanding what music can do can change of help you,” points out

Tarapacki.

Harmony will also be appearing at the 40th Celebration of the Vegreville Pysanka (The Vegg Fest) on Aug. 29th at 12 Noon. “We play and sing Ukrainian and

English tunes at all shows,” notes Tarapacki.

Mundare Agri Days Bench Show attracts 33 creative exhibitors

Ten-year-old Mundare resident Jessie Zeleny holds up one of her creative entries she crafted for the Mundare Agri Days Bench Show which was held in the Mundare Recreation Centre on Saturday, August 15. Zeleny was one of 33 exhibitors in the annual show that has been organized for the past 30 years by Tompkins.

While that will not come as a surprise to many people, it’s what she creates from them that is unexpected.

The 10-year-old Mundare resident’s amazing creations presented during the recent Mundare Agri Days Bench Show, incorporated Lego, Play-Doh, Sharpie Permanent Markers, and nail polish. Zeleny also had several creative culinary entries in the bench show.

Zeleny loves Legends of Zelda, and has no plans of stopping her creative juices from

overflowing into wonderful creations from her imagination.

There were a total of 33 exhibitors in this year’s bench show with entries in everything from fresh vegetables to canning to baking to floral arrangements to crops to sewing, knitting and crotcheting.

Pat Tompkins, who has co-ordinated the Bench Show for the past 30 years was very pleased with the number of exhibitors and entries for the 2015 show. The show is sponsored by the Mundare & District Agricultural Society.

Boris Derow, conductor of Axios Men始s Chorus of Edmonton, demonstrated his outstanding range and talent, along with the vocalists in the choir.

Nine-year-old Andrew resident and Ukrainian dancer Kienna Grosul, (dressed in her dance attire), was on her feet with the rest of the crowd of nearly 400 people who showed their appreciation for the inspiring and beautiful artistry of the Shumka Ukrainian Dancers on Saturday, August 22 at the Andrew Community Centre. Grosul said it was a dream come true to meet some of the dancers of the troupe. She dreams of one day dancing as a member of Shumka. Grosul has been Ukrainian dancing for four years with Sopilka, based out of Vegreville.

Featured artisans impress visitors

Ted Keelan August 11, 1953 - August 20, 2015

Gerald "Ted" Keelan of Tofield passed away on August 20, 2015 at the age of 62 years.

He is survived by his wife Marlene; two daughters Arlee (Barry) and Janeen (Scott); two precious grandchildren Annie Rose and Eddie; and his mom; as well as a number of brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.

A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Cremation has taken place.

Memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Quilter Kelly Osbourne and artist Janis Parrott were the featured guest artists at the 19th annual quilt show in Mundare recently.

Both ladies had several pieces on display for appreciative visitors who came to the Mundare Seniors Centre on Saturday, August 15.

Osbourne has been quilting for the past 18 years.

Altogether she has completed 182 projects. “I’ve always done crafts and needlework and I haven’t stopped since,” said the Edmonton resident.

Osbourne has been commissioned by many clients over the years, and now that she’s semi-retired, she is glad just to start working on some of her pieces that have been on the back burner for several years.

“Now it’s time to do my own projects!”

Retirement has also freed up artist Janis Parrott’s time to concentrate on her paintings. “I only began painting five years ago,” admitted Parrott, shyly.

Even though she has received only limited training in terms of art classes, it is clear to the eye that she has great talents when it comes to painting. She paints in both water colour and acrylic, and works off of photos. The St. Albert resident is always looking to improve her technique and develop new ideas and alternate methods and materials along the way.

Several of her paintings are of landscapes in Mexico, a place where she stays four months out of the year. “I’m always learning from other artists,” added Parrott, who is looking forward to many more warm days in the sun to enjoy and inspire her.
