McBride also said that people who hoard groceries from the grocery store don’t understand the ripple effect from their hoarding.

“People that live paycheque to paycheque cannot go out and buy groceries for four weeks at one time. They only have enough money to worry about this week,” she said.

McBride included that although the food bank so far is not experiencing a serious depletion, it is getting harder to replenish some groceries.

“Stores have been having a hard time keeping some items in stock. It was getting scary there for a while,” she said.

BY JANA SEMENIUK The County of Lamont Food Bank received a generous donation of $2,500 from the amateur theatre group the Chipman Players on Apr. 3.

“It was incredible how much they donated to us,” said County of Lamont Food Bank board chair Colette McBride. “It makes it easier for us when we go shopping. Our hamper numbers are up right now and will be for a while so we are going through more groceries than usual. This will certainly help us.”

McBride added that the food bank usually distributes 34 hampers a week and so far, this year it has been 40.

“We are only open one day per week and only allow people to visit once every four weeks.

Bruderheim council ‘Zooms’ in for meeting

BY JANA SEMENIUK The town of Bruderheim council and staff are continuing to think outside the box in terms of conducting business and supporting residents during the pandemic.

Chief administrative officer Patty Podoborozny explained how town council meetings are being held while adhering to social distancing policies.

“Our last council meeting, held on Mar. 31, had myself, director of legislative services Sherry Cote and councillor Len Falardeau in attendance,” she said. “While councillor George Campbell was absent,

Mayor Karl Hauch, deputy mayor Judy Schueler, and councillors Wayne Olechow, Pat Lee and Dan Skousbal attended by way of the Zoom application.”

Zoom is an online cloud-based video conferencing service. While the pandemic is limiting the availability of people to meet in person, organizations are having to look at other way to conduct business.

“I don’t have a modern computer yet so I stay away from those things if I can help it. I don’t even like to go on facebook.

BY JANA SEMENIUK Lamont chief administrative officer Christine Beveridge has received a ministerial order from the minister of municipal affairs Kaycee Madu in response to her letter requesting that Lamont town council be allowed to operate with six members as opposed to seven upon the resignation of councillor Doug Pewarchuk on Mar. 11.

The Municipal Government Act stipulates that council teams must maintain an uneven number of councillors as well as hold a by-election if a seat became vacant 18 months before the next election.

The next municipal election is scheduled to occur in October 2021, 19 months after Pewarchuk’s resignation.

“Administration has been inundated with trying to manage this situation (pandemic) and determining what the essential services are needed at this moment in time,” said Beveridge during the Mar. 20 special council meeting. “We realized quickly that a by-election at this point was just not going to be

possible.”

Beveridge prepared a request to send to the minister and requested approval from council to send it.

“Administration has prepared a letter to the minister of municipal affairs, Honourable Kaycee Madu, requesting an exemption (from conducting the by-election).

Administration recommends that the request to the minister is necessary, timely and appropriate,” she stated.

Council unanimously approved the request.

In the ministerial order received by Lamont town office on Mar. 31, Minister Madu granted the exemption. The reasons provided by the Minister were the global COVID-19 pandemic as well as the associated safety of electors, candidate, and election officials plus the costs associated with the by-election in addition to the composition of Council.

“As we are down to an even number of council members, if the vote on any issues results in a tie, the issue will be deemed defeated,” said Beveridge.

In addition to creative ways to conduct council meetings, the town staff have also come up with creative ways to support residents during this time when access to food may be limited. They have instituted a ‘popup’ food bank located at the town office.

only open on Thursdays and we were concerned about residents not having access to food,” Podoborozny explained.

She went on to add that the mini pop-up food bank is available to residents Mon. to Fri. 8 am – 4pm. Podoborzny added that donations are gratefully accepted.

Going forward, Podoborozny was unsure how community events will be managed given

that the end of the pandemic is unknown.

“We are already looking at what we might possibly do for Canada Day should it last that long,” she said. “We will find out this week if the campground will be closed this year so that may give us an idea.”

Although daily business has been challenging, Podoborozny included that she is grateful for the support

she has received from the governments both provincially and federally.

“The government has been fantastic in supporting our challenges with the pandemic,” she said. “Our MLA, Jackie Armstrong-Homeniuk or her assistant have checked in with us every week to help us through with anything we might need. She has been absolutely wonderful. “

Flimflammed by dictatorships Hopefully Canada will use the COVID-19 pandemic as a learning experience once all this isolation, quarantining, and social distancing is over. Lesson number one: don’t believe any messaging coming out of a dictatorship government.

One of the very first things dictatorships gain control of is the media.

A free press is able to criticize a government. Dictatorships do not tolerate criticism. What they pass off as news is in actuality, propaganda.

Remember the impressive Olympic ceremonies in China in 2008, and the little girl who dazzled the world with her singing of Ode to the Motherland. It was so good, and she was so adorable, that she found herself on the front page of the NY Times.

But nothing is as it seems with a dictatorship. It turned out the angelic child was lip syncing and the actual singer was another child whose uneven teeth were considered damaging to China’s international reputation if you can believe.

It was also discovered that the fireworks going off in Beijing were much different from the incredible computer generated light-show viewers on television were witnessing via digital imaging.

Propaganda is used to control a dictatorship’s people and make them believe the government is doing a wonderful job. It is also used to make the world believe that their country is more successful and more powerful than is reality.

Lying is an important part of propaganda. Twisting facts to make them fit a narrative is in fact propaganda not news. News is unbiased. Anytime you see one-sided news, you are being fed propaganda.

Hitler, perhaps history’s most famous dictator, made treaties with countries and then when they let their guard down promptly invaded those countries. Propaganda allowed the Nazis to control and twist news in an effort to make the German people believe their treatment of Jews and their multiple other atrocities were actually in their best interests, were untrue, or being exaggerated.

Those who fight from within dictatorships are eliminated. Remember Jamal Khashoggi, a journalist and critic of Saudi Arabia’s government who was murdered just two years ago?

Regarding COVID-19, the Chinese government propaganda machine is working hard to blame the spread of the virus on the US military.

China’s misinformation aside, it is more than likely that much of the spread of this virus could have been contained if China wasn’t covering up the problem in the early stages and misinforming the world to save face.

The Chinese Communists have also under-reported total cases and deaths, making it hard to judge and predict the damage the disease has and will cause. Their actions are not surprising for a dictatorship, but it is due time the free world stops reporting their propaganda.

There are 51 countries in the world with dictatorships including Yemen, Somalia, Russia, N. Korea, Iran, Egypt, and Afghanistan. None of them can be trusted, yet in the interest of money Canada allows them the same rights as democratic nations, and we continue to ignore their abuses of human rights (women in particular) and international laws because we do business with them.

I can’t help but think if the virus epicenter was in the free world, it would have been handled honestly and we wouldn’t have world-wide sickness, deaths, ruined economies, and financial destruction either personally, corporately, or governmentally.

It’s for our own good, but when is too much too much?

BY JOHN MATHER I’m sick of coronavirus or Covid-19.

I’m not really sick you know, but I’m sick of the reactions I’m seeing as I sit patiently and look out my window at the roads where traffic used to flow.

I’m sick of seeing our Prime Minister stand before his little microphone in Ottawa and tell us what good little boys and girls we’ve been and, if we’re not doing whatever he says, then we’re bad little boys and girls.

“And of course we’re doing all we can because ‘we’re all in this together’ and by social distancing and holding virtual hands we’ll be back to sunny days in no time. And don’t forget when those forces of evil bring my government down, think of these days and my inspiring messages and vote me in for another term.”

Or words to that effect, he seems to say.

I actually liked it when this crisis first came to a head three weeks ago and young Justin took the time to make a daily address to Canadians.

He outlined government programs being put in place to help laid off workers, and other impacted Canadians. OK, fine … great. But three weeks in if you have nothing to say then stay in your small mansion (calling it a cottage is somewhat of an under-

statement) and keep out of the way.

The experts I want to hear from across the country are the health care professionals.

Give me and update.

And where do we stand in relation to the rest of the world? I haven’t seen a scoresheet, as it were, on outbreaks around the world.

Oh for sure I’m hearing about the US, Italy, Spain and England. But what about some African countries, Afghanistan where there are still pitched battles occurring occasionally. Do armies and combatants social distance during a war? I suppose with technology and the drones now available they do.

I haven’t heard about the Covid 19 cases in Lebanon or Israel. Why not? Isn’t there any news from there?

Back home in Alberta we have some doctors unilaterally deciding they won’t go to a hospital because their wages are being trimmed by the government. Is now, in the middle of a pandemic, the time to decide you’ll cease to provide some services?

Now between you and me, doctors make one heck of a lot more money than that clerk working in the grocery store facing everyone coming in each and everyday covered in germs, or the trucker hauling goods across bor-

ders to market – even after wage cuts.

So whatever happened to doctors and their hippocratic oath?

Patient wellness should be front and centre, but for some that is no more.

Our society is falling apart! Societal norms of good taste, and reasonable outlook are falling by the wayside as more people discover social media and suddenly discover, “I have a voice … I have a voice.”

But with that newfound voice, should come some responsibility to try and be accurate and morally reasonable. And that ain’t happening!

There are people doing some very good deeds, bringing food to neighbouring seniors, and otherwise trying to assist the less fortunate, but they take a back seat to the negativity and government intervention taking place.

Yes, here I am sequestered in my home looking out at the quiet streets and the still park across the way.

When this is all over, I’m not sure I’m going to want to come back out.

Big brother is peeking his head out in a lot of different areas of our society right now and I see no guarantees he’ll go away when this is all said and done.

Be afraid …. be very afraid!

FROM WHERE I SIT: We’ll make it

BY HAZEL ANAKA Winston Churchill said, “When war is declared, truth is the first casualty.” I believe this to be true whether the war is armed combat or fighting a worldwide pandemic. Political leaders are all caught between a rock and a hard place.

Tell us the absolute truth---about likely infection numbers, projected deaths, length of time needed for physical distancing---and risk widespread panic and civil disobedience.

Or couch the message in half-truths, repeated hollow assurances, and cherry-picked facts. Tell us to stay home for two weeks. Maybe no one will notice that twoweek request is repeated again and again. Tell us we have enough PPE for frontline workers, that orders are coming, that factories are making more very soon. All while we see volunteers sewing masks at home or hearing medical people say they’re reusing (single use) equipment or being told to take it home and wash it.

The longer this pandemic affects our world, the more we see the domino effect and implications. Think morgues, mortuaries, funerals, cemetery plots. Think about the increased dangers to confined or overcrowded populations: seniors’ housing, pris-

ons, aboriginal or multigenerational family homes. As with all things, poverty and homelessness make everything worse.

Agencies are expecting an uptick in domestic and child abuse because of the enforced togetherness and increased stressors. Mental health help is being ramped up so reach out if you need it.

Think about all those who are vaping which already damages and compromises lungs.

Young vapers have been hit with Covid-19. Older adults with COPD and emphysema are especially vulnerable. As much as ventilators can save lives, we know there is a global shortage. From what I gather, it is a horrific experience to go through including coma and paralysis. Best to avoid putting oneself in the position of needing that intervention.

So, if we accept the premise that we can only control our own behaviour, let’s get practical for coping with the days, weeks, months ahead.

How we come through this individually and collectively will be a measure of our compliance, courage, and creativity.

I believe this is a perfect opportunity to tackle long-delayed projects. A festival friend from Edmonton called yesterday to see how I was doing. I asked if he and Cathy were playing cards. He said he was scanning documents from his past, adding captions, getting his papers in order. Through Googling, he discovered that a slightly weird guy he went to a US university with went on to win the Pulitzer prize. We talked about eating our way through the stockpiles in the fridge, freezer and pantry and he

said he can only eat so many Chow Chow pickles! Aside from a very pleasant thirty-minute conversation, my takeaway was that, even as an introvert, I need to reach out to others through whatever means because of how damn good it feels to know someone cares.

Those who love baking are probably baking up a storm. Great. I’m forcing Roy to finally get his two Honda trikes operational and the hell out of the garage. Not there yet. I grinned when I heard Oiler Leon Draisaitl is also doing puzzles… so many of us are in good company.

People are or should be turning to those simple pursuits that took a back burner when we were all so damn busy.

Crafters and sewers always have a stash of supplies on hand. Get your sewing machine out. Whether you used to paint or embroider or write Easter eggs or crochet or knit, pick it up again. Your mind and hands will be busy and distracted. The hours will pass blissfully; pride of accomplishment will ensue!

Or maybe this is the time to try something new. I made myself a simple loom and am trying my hand at weaving.

I seem to have lost my ability to read for pleasure so now I read for instructions, inspiration, and ideas. Before the pandemic, I bought an online art course for the entire year. Week after week, I’m inspired and motivated.

And of course, one course leads to another which leads to another. The only barrier is cost though much can be learned through free YouTube tutorials. And for the love of God, limit the toxicity of social

media or quit cold turkey.

Because I was used to covering my grey every five weeks and having regular nail appointments, social isolation is a blessing as I turn into a sight for sore eyes. The up side is that being covered in paint, ink, gel medium, fibres becomes less important when no one sees you. But, now is also the time to do those nurturing things we claimed we didn’t have time for before. Pull out the face masks; treat those cracked heels; treat

your hair with Moroccan oil (if only for the scent!); burn the special candles you’ve been saving; soak in the tub; use the serums, lotions, potions clogging our drawers and cupboards. Delight in every time you empty a container of product because you’ve gotten your money’s worth and avoided waste.

Get the clothes off the treadmill, unfold the rowing machine, find the hand weights, climb the stairs in your home, shovel the sidewalk.

When we’re finally freed

from our homes, we want to be able to walk out on our own steam.

Do any character building, dreaded tasks like prepping for income tax, purging cupboards and drawers, sorting photos, deleting emails, finishing started projects, cleaning the garage or whatever your particular albatross is.

Well, my lovelies, that’s this week’s report from the (home) front.

Bruderheim traffic stop leads to drug charges On April 4th, 2020 while conducting proactive patrols in the community of Bruderheim, Alberta member’s of the Fort Saskatchewan RCMP conducted a traffic stop with a vehicle found to be bearing a licence plate which did

not match.

Subsequent to the stop police determined the vehicle being operated was not registered.

Police identified the vehicle occupants and found the male passenger had an outstanding warrant for his arrest. A

search incidental to arrest was completed and a small amount of Methamphetamine was seized.

A 36 year old male from Edmonton was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Make funding available for students Who’s looking out for post-secondary students?

While the Canada Emergency Response Benefit reaches a lot of people, it misses the mark when it comes to post-secondary students.

Specifically, the eligibility criteria stipulates that “The benefit is only available to individuals who stopped work as a result of reasons related to COVID-19. For example if you are a student who had a job last year and were planning on working this summer you do not qualify for the benefit”.

Hats off to the BC government for stepping up

to provide $3.5 million emergency funding supports for post-secondary students. The nonrepayable emergency assistance can be used for living expenses, food, travel, portable computers and other supports for students who are not already able to study remotely.

What’s the solution?

The Government of Alberta needs to respond with something similar, and needs to lobby the Federal Government to include students in the CERB. Post-secondary students need work/ income to survive and in many cases save up for their next term.

Postponing repayment

of student loans is great, but only applicable to graduating students.

Those who continue won’t have to repay their loans until they graduate.

We can’t let post-secondary students fall through the cracks.

Along with our young people currently in the workforce, they are the future of our province.

Here’s hoping the Alberta Government and/or the Federal Government step up to provide the assistance they need.

New money allotted to FCSS for COVID-19 battle

Churches moving to online services, connecting with new people

BY JANA SEMENIUK With social distancing and self isolation limiting the amount of time church goers can spend in their places of worship, Bruderheim Community Church has found a way to reach the congregation minus a traditional gathering every Sunday morning.

“One of our members suggested going online with service every Sunday morning,” said Bruderheim Community Church pastor Wayne Larson. “So, we created a youtube channel and upload videos every week.”

Larson added that the response has been very positive.

“Our members have given us very good feedback. It’s really kept the communication channels open,” he said. “I have been calling our members on a rotational basis, particularly our seniors and vulnerable members in retirement homes that can’t be visited. I know other members of our congregation have been doing the same.”

Larson also mentioned that in spite of the social distancing guidelines,

acts of service are still being honoured.

“I know several of our members have been picking up groceries for other people and running errands. We have also been a collection point for the County of Lamont Food Bank. It makes us very happy to be able to contribute by bringing in the donated food and cash,” he said.

Larson included that technology has been an incredible help in keeping the church connected to its members.

“I am grateful we are still able to connect in spite of the pandemic,” said Larson. “It concerns me to see groups continue to congregate in spite of the distancing regulations. I think we need to be an example to our members.”

Meanwhile at the Lamont United Church, a live virtual Easter service will be held by Rev. Debbie Brill at 11:15 am on April 12.

“One of the great things with virtual connection is that people

who don’t usually come are connecting with us.

We are connecting with a whole new audience and a whole new batch of people,” said Brill.

BY JANA SEMENIUK Family and Community Support Services received additional budget news from the provincial government.

In Mar. the Alberta government provided $30 million to municipalities, charitable and non-profit organizations with the Social Services Support for COVID 19 program.

The program, being provided through FCSS and FCSSA, is to help vulnerable Albertans impacted by the measures to contain COVID 19.

The funds were distributed with $7 million to Edmonton FCSS, $9 million to Calgary FCSS and $14 million to Family and Community Support Services Association of Alberta (FCSSAA) which serves municipalities and Metis Settlements outside of Edmonton and Calgary.

“Basically, this is funding being provided to non profit groups, through us, so they can provide help to seniors and vulnerable Alber-

tans in their communities in any way they are impacted by COVID 19 whether they have limited access or need help in other ways,” said Lamont County FCSS Communications Coordinator Heather Atkinson.

Information provided by the provincial government stated that there is an application process as well as reporting requirements for non-profit groups eligible for the support.

In addition, all grant funding must be used

by Mar 31, 2021 and any surplus dollars from the grant must be returned and cannot be carried over to the following fiscal year.

Atkinson added that charitable and non profit groups in Lamont County are encouraged to contact FCSS for detailed funding guidelines and grant criteria.

Once approved, their organization can assist seniors, individuals, families and other vulnerable Albertans who are isolated or impacted by measures used to

contain COVID 19.

“All of us at Lamont County care about the community and are doing what we can to help our residents out during this time,” stated Atkinson.

In addition, to help in determining what areas of social supports are needed at this time, a survey has been created

by FCSS for Lamont County residents to complete. Residents are asked to access the survey via the Lamont county website at lamontcounty.ca or on the Lamont County Facebook page and click the link.

Landfill maintains regular hours during Covid crisis

BY JOHN MATHER In this era of self isolation and quarantining, the St. Michael landfill continues to operate with its regular hours.

“The hours of operation are the same from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday,” said Linda Davies, manager of the St. Michael Landfill commission.

“We put a Covid -19 policy in place in early March when we were first hearing about it and have modified it as things progressed.”

She said some people coming to dump were known to have been in self quarantine, but by coming to the dump were breaking those rules and they were dealt with “quite sternly.”

“We were able to maintain the proper social distancing from them and no money or scale tickets were changing hands,” she said. “For the most part the scale operator is generally more than six feet away when you go across the scale or are off

loading.”

“We are an essential service, so we can’t be shut down, and will maintain our hours.”

She said access to the scale house and shop are controlled and not open to the public.

In addition she said all

equipment is regularly wiped down and all doorhandles in the various buildings are sanitized on a regular basis.

“We do have biohazardous material coming into the dump from the hospital so we know how to deal with it, but

“Nothing will survive being deep in the ground,” she said.

She said the landfill has received more telephone calls regarding dumping but adds to date this year’s the activity at the dump is down by about 5 per cent compared to the same time period in 2019.

“It’s been cold,” she said. “So people don’t come to the dump as often. Once it warms up they’ll come out and it doesn’t matter how muddy it gets they’ll be here.”

She said in the spring the scale gets coated with mud but the staff always just get out shovels and clean it off so its ready for the next customer.

Rural Crime Watch colouring contest winners announced The winners of the Rural Crime Watch Poster Colouring Contest were announced in March, just prior to the Schools closing because of the Covid-19 crisis and awards were passed on to the winners when parents attended the school to pick up the students books and personal items.

The annual Poster Colouring Contest shows pictures of crime prevention and were submitted in November 2019. The posters were judged and awarded prizes based on the grade each student was in.

The top provincial submissions will be used in a Rural Crime Watch school calendar.

School-aged children throughout Alberta were asked to share their thoughts on Crime Prevention and Fish & Wildlife protection in their community.

Crime Watch Association provided cash prizes to the top three winners in each grade. Students who won first place receive a $30 cash prize, second place received a $20 cash prize and third place received a $15 cash prize.

MP Stubbs fights to help abandoned well clean up

BY JOHN MATHER Lakeland MP Shannon Stubbs has pushed forward a private members bill aimed at creating an immediate tax credit for decommissioning old and inactive oil and gas wells.

She proposes a flowthrough share mechanism to get private investors to invest in well closure, remediation and reclamation.

Stubbs has received local support for the bill including support from the oil and gas industry and from municipalities such as the town of Mundare.

“It’s a private members bill, which is determined by a draw after each election,” said Stubbs, April 2. “I’ve been fortunate in that twice I’ve had the opportunity to put forth a private member draw and I had to think long and hard before I decided on bringing this bill for-

ward.”

She previously brought forth a bill seeking more support to combat rural crime.

“I settled on the issue of orphan wells because it’s having an impact on communities in Lakeland and across the province,” she said.

“With the collapse of companies, like Sequoia, its left municipalities out millions of dollars in taxes and that’s having a direct affect on ratepayers.”

She said the number of orphan well had increased 300 per cent since 2015, posing not only a financial impact but an environmental one.

She added a private members bill couldn’t initiate a financial change in legislation, so she worked with people to word the bill to create a tax credit with a target towards decommissioning oil and gas wells.

“I think there are many measures the government should be implementing. Similar measures to this bill exist in the mining industry. In my ideal world the government should do the same thing for oil and gas.”

She said if she couldn’t get the full intent of what she’d like to see through, because some of the other political parties oppose anything to do with supporting oil and gas, she focussed her bill on oil and gas well remediation for orphaned wells because that also focuses on environmental clean up.

Her tax credit would specifically be related to oil and gas well remediation.

In addition, the tax credit would not apply to the top 10 producing companies in the oil and gas field.

Bill C-221 is targeted at small and medium pro-

ducers that are struggling the most. The small and medium producers that qualify under C-221, on average, have one oil and gas well compared to 10 for the major producers that don’t qualify.

In 2017 and 2018, more than two-thirds of these companies lost money.

The Canadian companies that would qualify account for about one quarter of oil and gas production in Canada.

She added the parliamentary budget office has costed out her bill before it goes to the House of Commons for debate.

In addition, Stubbs said she has been working with the other parties to get her bill through.

They have been very supportive,” she said.

“We doing everything we can to move the dial on it and the opposition is interested in it.

“They want to ensure environmental obliga-

tions are taken care of,” she added. “The finance minister of Alberta supports the concept of it, and we’re working with environmental groups.”

She said the timeline is unclear with parliament suspended.

“It was to have come before the end of March but with what’s happening in the world and parliament cancelled right now I’m not sure where it’s going.”

improve on what I am proposing with a better bill I would withdraw mine. All I’m interested in is achieving the objective.”

She said she wanted to see the government make an announcement showing support for the energy industry which they promised at the start of the Covid 19 crisis.

“I’m still waiting for this announcement and they might include aspects of my bill here.”

Headed to a plant in the Alberta Industrial Heartland, the large load has to sit on its siding just west of Lamont until contractors at its final destination are ready to receive it and put it in place.
