Howdy my fellow Killamites! I hope you’re all enjoying our spring-like weather while we have it. I saw some mosquitoes the other day, which thoroughly upset me that they’re already here.

I got to witness their livelihood before I have had the chance to spot any robins. Gross. Hopefully our bats are doing well and will entertain us with their acrobatics while catching all the bugs.

Raise your hand if you’re excited to get into your local greenhouse and be surrounded by some beautiful greenery and blooms soon!! I am so excited to have some plants to care for. Outside plants that is, as the inside of my house has a nice collection I take care of already. Eric says I have a problem as I constantly come home with new ones.

I had a sneak peek at Country Girl to say hello with the dogs. By sneak peek, I mean I was able to stick my head into one of the greenhouses for five seconds before the dog overheated. But from what I saw, Joleen has a plethora of plants ready to go for opening!

Thanks to Wavy Lake 4-H for trusting us with Strome’s Community Calendar this year. One of the companies that used to make a lot of the community calendars in

the region was actually based in BC and is no longer in business.

The good news is, the CP can also do it! So if you’re thinking of discontinuing your community’s calendar, give me a call first. 780-3856693. We can do the same quality, a similar product, quick turnaround, no extra charges for logo changes, and your group gets to keep more of the profits!

Did you see the photo on the cover of The ‘Press this week? If so, you saw that a generous donation was made to our hospital and I have some more information about that, which was sent in for me to share.

Lloyd George, formerly of Killam, passed away on Nov. 24 in Camrose. He was born in Galahad, and met wife Joyce (Niehaus) during a dance held at the Coldstream Barn west of Killam. They were married Oct. 17/51 and celebrated their 69th anniversary before his passing. The two had five children, three girls: Sharleen, Rhonda, and Debbie; and two boys: Don and Bob. Lloyd and Joyce actively farmed in the Killam area until their retirement to Killam, and then to Camrose.

Bob and wife Karen continue to farm and make their home at Coldstream Farm.

The barn was named a Municipal Historic Re-

source by Flagstaff County under a Bylaw passed by Council in 2013, in part due to the dances held there regularly in the past, which held real significance to the family and to many other area residents.

The family wanted to make this donation to Killam Long Term Care in Lloyd’s memory as they felt he would be pleased with giving back to the community where he lived for so long.

The wheelchair was accepted by Killam Hospital Foundation Chair Sharleen Chevraux, on Saturday, who said, “This donation will make a real difference in someone’s life, and is

greatly appreciated."

Joyce continues to make her home in Camrose. Daughter Sharleen was unable to attend due to pandemic travel restrictions.

Looking for good news to get us through difficult times As the COVID-19 pandemic drags on into the 14th month, it’s easy to be drawn into negativity. We’re all tired of the restrictions, but there’s hope ahead if we can just tough it out a little longer.

Even for those who’ve managed to feel like they’ve maintained good mental health throughout the pandemic can start to feel fatigued as days go one without change.

One helpful thing for me has been to focus on the positive, and try to find at least one good thing each day to celebrate. Recently, I found out about an incredible program that is helping veterans across Canada; it’s called Guitars for Vets.

It’s a program of VETS Canada, short for Veterans Emergency Transition Services.

This is one incredible non-profit organization, helping Canadian veterans and RCMP members deal with “the invisible wounds of their service.”

From the period starting in May through to December, a total of 10 veterans will be selected from each of 10 regions across the county to receive a brand new acoustic guitar, a Guitars for Vets t-shirt, and 10 free guitar lessons. That’s 100 guitars going out to help veterans!

It’s an initiative that was designed to provide veterans with an outlet to momentarily escape from reality. Programmers hope to make it harder to dwell on negative thoughts while playing music.

It’s not a new program, but this initiative, Strumming from Coast to Coast, is special to 2021.

Guitars for Vets has matched veterans and still-serving members with PTSD or other service-related disabilities with new or gently used guitars and online volunteer lessons.

Not only does this program support those who have served our country and community, it also provides an opportunity to participate, even if you’re not musical.

For those who might be interested in becoming a volunteer instructor, all it takes is filling out an online application form at vetscanada.org Anyone who might have an extra or unused acoustic guitar that is in reasonably good shape can make a donation of the instrument to a veteran participating in the program. In fact, over the time the program has been running, there have been 1,977 guitars donated.

As I learned about this program, I learned about other things this amazing group does, responding to veterans in immediate need of shelter or care, and stepping up to make a difference.

The organization is supported by the RCMP, Royal Canadian Legion, Veterans Affairs, Province of Alberta and other private groups. I’m proud to see that Alberta is the only provincial government who partners and supports the group.

The organization recently shared a story where they were able to convince a Canadian Forces veteran who served in Afghanistan to choose life over suicide. “He had the courage to serve and the courage to reach out for help.”

Stories like these restore my faith in the goodness of my fellow Canadians, and are very inspiring.

VETS Canada said on their Twitter feed at the end of March, “Seems like everyone is trying to write that one brilliant Tweet that goes viral so people will actually have a look at what they are doing... We wish we could come up with something like that, because the work we do needs to go viral.” I hope by sharing their story here, I can help in a small way.

When you look, there are a lot of good people doing great things because something about an organization or group struck a chord in their hearts, whether it be through shared experiences, or recognition that help is needed.

As Canadians, as Albertans, and as Flagstaff residents, we have a wonderful track record of supporting each other, and other amazing groups.

This is just one example of finding some good news that puts things into perspective.

Flagstaff County approves new dust suppressant policy Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Flagstaff County Council voted to approve its new dust suppressant policy during the regular meeting of council held Wednesday, April 14.

Council directed administration to develop a new dust suppressant policy during its Feb. 10 meeting, proposing that a model similar to that used by Camrose County be adopted, allowing landowners to hire private contractors to apply provincially approved dust-suppressant products at their own cost.

When a draft copy of the new policy was presented to Council Feb. 24, Council asked for further revisions, to include the option of having Flagstaff County apply MG-30 dust suppressant to those who request it, on a full cost-recovery basis.

Wednesday saw the final draft of the new policy obtain Council approval, to come in force immediately.

The policy includes a hold-harmless agreement drafted by Brownlee LLP, also similar to that used by Camrose County.

Under the new policy, only products approved for use

by Alberta Transportation may be applied.

Council also accepted a bid for purchase of the Heisler grader shed, one of three received when that building was put up for sale by tender. The successful bid was from Killam Towing Ltd. Council also extended the contract for a bridge repair contract when work on BR#72402-20, at SW 36-44-13 (Range Road 131, north of Killam) was interrupted by early spring runoff, and was not able to be completed by a March 31 completion date.

Council agreed to extend the contract to June 26.

Another bridge repair, on RR140, north of Killam, included in the contract, was completed within the contract time frame.

Public Works Superintendent Darryl Szott brought forward a 2022 shoulder pulling project to replace the budgeted work that was to be completed on the Heisler East road, (Township Road 430 between secondary Highways 856 and 855.)

Szott presented two options for Council, first to simply cancel the oil road recovery project and leave a budget surplus of approximately $293,400 in the project budget, or to bring forward the shoulder pulling project on ENE 36-31-15, Range Road 160, south for six miles, with an estimated cost of $278,400.

Council passed a motion to bring forward the 2022 road project to 2021.

Council chose not to go forward with a study on the effects that MG-30 application might have on underground infrastructure.

A quote was obtained to evaluate the effects of MG-30 on underground infrastructure within other towns and villages where the county provides dust suppressant services from InnoTech Alberta (previously the Alberta Research Council). When discussing the project, InnoTech Alberta indicated that such a study would need to encompass a broad scope of concrete mixes, even along the same section of road, that put the estimate for the study in the range of $40,000 to $64,500, with a possibility of being higher, based on what surfaces were actually found.

Councillor Erik Skoberg, who had made the request for a quote during Council’s Feb. 10 meeting, clarified that his intent was to “make sure the products we are using are not escalating underground infrastructure degradation.”

Skoberg said, “We could do a hold harmless agreement [where MG-30 is applied to town or village roadways by the County] but we don’t know the impact to a small community. We want to do our due diligence now, today, to ensure that the product we are using is not creating an adverse effect that is going to impact taxes down the road.

“If there is a risk there, and we can’t quantify or qualify it, what do we do? What should we do?”

Councillor Howard Shield replied, “There is an inherent risk with anything done on a road, even by the traffic using it. If towns and villages want to use dust suppressant, and they want us to provide it, that’s at their own risk.”

Szott advised that MG-30 is not used on hamlet roadways at the present time for a dust suppressant.

Shield noted, “MG-30 is an approved product by the province.”

Skoberg clarified: “I’m talking about the MG-30 on storm drains if there’s a heavy rain that washes it off the road surface and the effect on that infrastructure.”

CAO Shelly Armstrong asked for some clarification on the scope of the proposed study, saying, “I’m not sure if we are only talking about Strome and Galahad, or other municipalities, who do accept this product for this use.

Going into this research may cost more than the value it brings.”

Reeve Don Kroetch said, “As municipalities, they have the ability to go with any contractor for their dust suppressant needs.”

Public Works asked for guidance and next steps after the tender process produced no bids for the purchase of the former Strome village office building, which also houses the Strome Post Office.

Szott advised that a few inquiries were made about the building after the tender had closed, with one offer of purchase for $250 coming two weeks after the tender closed on March 25.

Szott asked Council to provide direction on next steps for continuing with the Aug. 12/20 decision of Council to put the building up for sale.

Council passed a resolution to list the building and property for sale with a real estate company.

Preparing for grass fires isn’t just a job for firefighters Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Local fire departments have had a busy start to the wildfire season, either fighting fires, or going through training sessions to ensure they have the skills and tools needed, and in some cases, doing both.

Flagstaff County Regional Emergency Services Coordinator Kim Cannady says that the latest Alberta Agriculture Fine Fuel Moisture Content maps show all of Flagstaff County, in fact most of Central Alberta, in the extreme range.

Maps of 30-day standardized precipitation show most of the county in a ‘once in six years’ stage low.

Cannady says that rumours of fires started by cigarettes are mostly false. “Most grass fires are caused by malfunctioning machinery,” he says, citing three recent separate grass fires in the county. Cannady says with today’s cigarettes, they would almost have to land perpendicular to the grass and stay that way in order to ignite. “I don’t want people to discount cigarettes as a cause, but they often get blamed when conditions don’t make it possible.” Lightning and birds striking power lines are also common causes of wildland fire.

He says there are also some things that landowners, urban and rural, can do to lessen the damage from a wildfire.

It’s called Fire Smarting, and it’s something that everyone should do on a regular basis.

The Province agrees; a recent press release from Laura Stewart, FireSmart specialist with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, says, “The first thing to do is walk around your property to identify wildfire risks.

“Start with the first five feet around the entire home and any attachments, such as decks.

“What combustible fuels are you keeping closest to your home? You want to keep a special eye out for things like dry leaves, grass, and twigs; firewood piles, construction materials, and patio furniture.

“Whenever possible, you want to move these items at least 10 metres from your home, or safely store them in a garage or shed.”

More than half of homes damaged or destroyed by

wildfire are ignited by embers. Research has shown that structural modifications, like fire-resistant building materials, can reduce the risk of wildfire damage up to 40 per cent.

“If you’re making important structural modifications and moving those combustible fuels farther away from your home, you can reduce wildfire risk by up to 75 per cent.”

Keeping your roof clean and clear of combustible debris helps, as does upgrading to clay tile, concrete tile, metal, or asphalt shingles.

Ensure siding and vents are free from combustible

debris and are in good repair.

Remove combustible debris and vegetation on, around, and under decks and other attached structures. Consider covering the underside of the deck with non-combustible sheathing, such as fibre cement board or metal screening.

Gutters and eaves should be clean and clear of debris such as twigs, leaves, and branches.

Evergreen trees are highly flammable, and should not be within 10 metres of your home. If combustible landscaping mulch ignites, it can produce embers that See GRASS FIRES P23

Hello everyone, spring has arrived and our area is inundated with baby calves, goats, sheep, foals, and a multitude of returning Canada geese. They seem to return to their previous year’s nesting place.

By us that means out on the flats near the creek, which is also the path that the coyotes seem to travel every day.

It amazes me how hard they must work to ward off predators who love to eat their eggs. From what was on the TV these geese can be quite vicious, so maybe coyotes think twice before bothering a goose parent?

Talking about eggs and babies brings me to the exciting news I received. Our neighbours’ daughter Kendra Korth and her partner Conrad are expect-

ing a wee one in November, a sibling for little Ella.

Grandparents are Susan and Lorne Korth and great-grandmother will be Marg Korth.

Other neighbours are Carol and Ian MacRae, who are so excited to announce that son James and his partner Zana Rahmoun are expecting a baby in the late summer. Congratulations to all of you. Maybe we will see the population of our area increase since there are lots of young couples around. Here’s hoping!

COVID-19 has currently curtailed the social life we all enjoy. We lack hugs and kisses, so to fill the void many folks have purchased furry companions.

Our son Harley and his fiancee Justine adopted a lovely mixed breed dog named Kozmo. He comes every day to the farm and is being groomed to be a cattle dog. He is a smart animal and his owners

have trained him to ring a hanging bell by their back door. When he has to relieve himself he walks to the door and rings the bell.

I could not believe he could manage that. They are not so thrilled when he tinkles the bell at 4 a.m., but he has them trained.

He rings and they run, haha. I think he has them trained, don’t you?

Our 13 year old Shitzu, Lady, has us figured out, too. When she wants our attention she comes and stares at us and if we do not respond she lets out a few woofs.

We let her to the door, thinking she wants to go outside, but sometimes she just stares up at the snack cupboard, letting us know she needs some special nutrition. Do you think we are trained?

I did some reading on dogs from a magazine titled “Animal Mind.” Here are some interesting facts.

Dogs all navigate the world by sniffing and smelling everything. This includes your butt and groin and the same area in other dogs. This is natural behavior for dogs, so do not scold them. They are just getting to know you or the other dog, just saying “Hello.”

Humping is another interesting movement dogs execute and it is not perverted. All dogs do it and do it no matter what. They communicate with barking when they are happy, sad, agitated, afraid, or excited.

They really pay atten-

tion to your tone of voice and your eyes, hands, and gestures. People will say that their dog knows how they are feeling. Well they actually do, they possess some level of emotional intelligence.

Play is also very important to keep their senses tweaked. It satisfies a whole range of biological, emotional, and cognitive needs. So take time to play with your dog and enrich their being.

Their hearing is superior to our, especially if there is a thunder storm brewing.

You might find your dog under your bed or under your deck. It is truly scared. Our furry babies are remarkable creatures.

Keep them healthy, vaccinated, and loved. They are “Man’s best friend.”

I was talking to Dale (Shelly) Drever, who lives on Hardisty Lake. He is

amazed at how high the lake level is. Being a farmer, he knows it is not from excessive snow runoff or recent rains. He figures it must be springs.

The weather shed and swings are right on the edge of the water. I would say half of the beach is under water. I remember talking to Bernice Tillmar years ago and she remembers when Hardisty Lake was a hay field. Mother Nature always surprises us.

Another year in a province-wide COVID-19 pandemic meant another year that friends and family couldn’t help Reta LeGear celebrate her birthday this April.

Last year, family and friends threw LeGear a surprise parade to celebrate her special day, but with another birthday coming up and the province still having restrictions on family get-to-

gethers, daughter Nancy Ambler decided to try something different this year.

She says, “I asked friends and family to send a birthday card hoping to get enough to total her age.

“The response was overwhelming!

She received 84 cards, which she wants everyone to know is not her age!”

Ambler adds, “She had so much fun getting her mail and was happy to hear from people she has not seen in a long time.”

Killam RCMP Detachment members want to remind the public about an ongoing scam in which taxpayers across the country receive phone calls or emails from individuals impersonating CRA employees. These people are scammers.

A local resident recently fell victim to this scam and RCMP are once again educating the public on this issue.

The scammers tell taxpayers that they either owe money to the CRA or have a tax refund. Taxpayers are threatened with arrest or jail time if they do not take immediate action and provide money, gift cards, and/or personal or financial information.

No legitimate government agency or business will demand payment in gift cards or prepaid credit cards. These methods are used by criminals in order to hide their activities from police.

The RCMP plays a crucial role in educating the public about scams, and has a number of programs in place to track fraud, including one run by the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC).

The CAFC monitors all types of scams, and warns Canadians to be on the lookout for scammers during the upcoming tax season. The RCMP also works closely with the CRA to raise awareness about tax-related scams.

All citizens need to be aware and cautious when dealing with unknown phone calls from “so called” sales representatives or businesses representatives. Another scam that is ongoing is individuals impersonating a Telus Representative. These types of calls are all scams. Do not provide any personal details or information about yourself.

Killam Detachment members responded to 99 occurrences between April 12 to Monday, April 26.

On April 16, Killam RCMP received

a complaint of a suspicious vehicle.

It was confirmed that the vehicle was reported stolen. Members were able to locate the driver of the stolen vehicle.

A 42-year-old male from Killam was charged with Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5.000.

(Name can not be released until legal documents are officially signed).

RCMP dealt with seven 911 hangups during this period, a concerning rise.

Police received 10 calls reporting suspicious persons or vehicles, as well as one complaint of an abandoned motor vehicle.

RCMP had nine motor vehicle collisions reported, with two animal calls.

Killam members provided assistance during this period to other RCMP detachments and police services, provincial agencies, and the general public, as well as providing crime prevention assistance.

RCMP are investigating one complaint of assault.

Three breach of the peace complaints were made to police, and one complaint of an individual causing a disturbance, as well as a complaint of uttering threats.

There were five break and enters to businesses reported over the past two weeks, and six of fraud under $5,000.

As well, three motor vehicle thefts were reported to Killam RCMP, along with two complaints of mischief.

RCMP conducted two checkstops, and laid one impaired operation of a motor vehicle, and 16 other provincial violations. RCMP report one flight from police.

Two instances of possession of property obtained by crime occurred, one under $5,000, one over $5,000.

Members are investigating one harassing communication, one trespass complaint, and one sexual assault. Police had three calls under the Mental Health Act, and performed one wellbeing check.

Daysland community ‘all in’ for spring cleaning Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Spring cleaning is definitely the buzz word for Daysland residents right now.

It all started on Earth Day, April 22, when Daysland School students participated in a town-wide cleanup.

Then the Town and Flagstaff Waste Management joined the fray, announcing that the Transfer Station will be open the weekend of May 8 and 9 for yard cleanup.

This coming weekend, a COVID-

friendly community garage sale, called “Junk in the Trunk” which will continue through May, is happening at the Daysland Community Hall parking lot, where participants will park in a stall, and sell from the trunks of their vehicles.

Tables are available for rent for a small fee, and there is no registration required. The event is following AHS regulations, asking participants to wear masks, have sanitizer available, and park and shop a safe distance apart. No food or beverage sales will be available.

On May 7 to 9, Daysland residents will be having a Kick it to the Curb event, where items that are no longer wanted will be displayed in front of homes and marked “free” in the hopes that one person’s junk will be another person’s treasure.

Residents are responsible for removing any leftover items from their lawns or driveways at the end of the event.

Finally, Daysland Minor Ball is holding a bottle drive on Thurs-

day, May 6, where residents can leave their bottles and cans on the curb or lawn, starting at 5 p.m.

Volunteers are always welcome, the group will meet at the ball diamonds with maps before heading out for pickup.

Moderna shots available in Daysland to those eligible under Phase 1 through 2C Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Last week The Community Press incorrectly reported that the Pfizer vaccine was available through Daysland Pharmacy/Apple Drugs, however it is the Moderna vaccine.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) reports that pharmacies with Pfizer and Moderna vaccine are immunizing Albertans who are part of Phase 2B and 2C. Albertans who are part of Phase 1B and 2A remain eligible.

Pharmacies with AstraZeneca vaccine, as in the Hardisty Community Drug Mart, are immunizing Albertans 40 years of age and older (born in 1981 or earlier).

Premier Jason Kenney said of the expanded AstraZeneca rollout on Monday, “Gen X has stepped up, in a big way!” Kenney says that Alberta has the widest vaccine delivery program in Canada.

The Province announced Monday that, “Starting April 27, vaccines will be offered to more than 15,000 workers at

136 federal and provincial plants across the province. In order to vaccinate workers as quickly as possible, a variety of approaches will be used, including on-site clinics, pharmacies and Alberta Health Services clinics.”

Meat-packing plant workers were identified as an eligible group under Phase 2C, but delays in Alberta’s incoming vaccine supply delayed the start of this program until now.

There will also be a further expansion of those eligible under Phase 2B. “Youth born between 2006 and 2009 with underlying health conditions are now eligible to book appointments for their COVID-19 vaccine. A doctor’s note is required to book an appointment with participating pharmacies and AHS.” As of Sunday, April 25, 1.4 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine had been administered in Alberta.

Phase 2D is expected to open in May, which will include Albertans born between 1957 to 1971, turning 50 to 64, and First Nations, Métis, and Inuit persons born 1972 to 1986 no matter where they live.

Virtual Womens’ Conference delivers high energy to participants

Flagstaff Community Adult Learning moved to a virtual format for their annual Womens’ Conference last week, on Thursday, April 22, featuring a terrificly upbeat, energetic message from keynote speaker Tracy Schmitt.

Schmitt, also known as “Unstoppable Tracy,” managed to deliver her message with enthusiasm and a lot of energy that successfully came through to participants, even over the virtual platform.

Though the overall number of participants was down, from a sold out crowd at the last in-person event in 2019, there were 50 people in Thursday’s Zoom event, and according to one of the organizers, Nanette Jones, overall, it went very well. She says, “We wanted this to be a gift to our community that would be an encouragement after a challenging year.”

Schmitts message for the day was about being ‘change capable,’ which Jones said was very pertinent for the day. Those who registered received a free copy of Schmitt’s book, “Unstoppable You,” in packages that were predelivered to their communities prior to the event.

Jones says, “Our volunteer committee had a lot to learn about virtual events.”

Not only did the zoom event feature Schmitt, but also breakout rooms where participants chose two of six different information sessions, including Tracey Burnett, AHS Sexual Health Consultant; Kevin Kisilevich from Go East of Edmonton tourism group; Doreen Blumhagen on resilience and mental health; Bruce Bonsteel, of Bonesteel’s Garden Centre from New York; Lynette hayes, from Styled by Lynette Home Decor; and Lynne Jenkinson from Flagstaff Rural Crime Watch.

In their swag bags, participants also received small gifts from local donors, and there were two door prizes, which, coincidentally, were won by the same person.

Flagstaff County Economic Development Coordinator Jordyn Prior acted as both Zoom consultant and gave a presentation on the Flagstaff Crafted program, hinting about a new initiative featuring Flagstaff Fresh Food that will be rolling out this year.

The theme of the Womens’ Conference has been ‘Stronger Together’ for a number of years, and Jones says, “We are stronger together. Everybody involved stretched their boundaries and came away glad that they did.

“One of our participants said, ‘Of course we would rather be in person, but I just want to support what your committee is doing.’ That sums it up for

me: we are a community that supports one another.”

Of course the day was not without glitches, when the emcee for the event, Joanne McMahon, lost power briefly, for example, or when one of the cracker barrel session hosts lost their internet connection, but as Jones says, “We persevered. We knew there would be glitches, and the participants were patient and stuck with us throughout the day.

“I am so proud of our committee who really went the extra mile to make this event special.”

As they would do in previous years, each participant was asked to complete a feedback form afterwards. Jones says, “The cracker barrels were well attended and enjoyed by the ladies. We are grateful for the positive feedback and Tracy and the cracker barrels.”

Some of the advantages of hosting a virtual event, Jones says, was the ability to have presenters and participants from greater distances. Schmitt participated from her home in New York, as did presenter Bruce Bonesteel. And as it turned out, Schmitt had an opportunity to reconnect with Shelly Webb, of Sedgewick; they met in an Easter Seals camp in Ontario many years prior. “It was fun to see them reunited, as Shelly was Tracy’s favourite camp counsellor.”

Jones says she and the committee were very impressed with their keynote speaker, who went on to participate throughout the day, including the cracker barrel presentations. “We were very pleased with Tracy and her impactful message. We hope that the participants will read the free book she gave everyone and pass it along to others.”

Flagstaff Rural Crime Watch reflects on benefits of membership Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Flagstaff Rural Crime Watch Society (FRCW) is all about people watching out for one another in an effort to prevent property crimes, says Education Director Lynne Jenkinson As part of the larger Alberta Crime Watch membership, local members work together to promote and practice the concept that nothing is more effective to prevent crime than taking proactive steps to make it as hard as possible on would-be thieves.

Members of the FRCW act as the extended eyes and ears of RCMP in an effort to prevent crime in our rural communities, including urban centres

within Flagstaff County.

Membership in FRCW includes rural crime watch signage, which Jenkinson says has been proven to be a deterrent for thieves.

“The sign says, we’re watching out for one another, not just our property, but for our neighbours, too,” says Jenkinson.

Other benefits to membership include access to education programs, including information on CPTED, which stands for crime prevention through environmental design, offering information on how even small modifications to properties, through lighting and signage, can have a big impact on preventing property crime.

The FRCW has a good relationship

with local RCMP, sharing tips and timely crime releases on social media.

The group also offers for sale special trace pens for marking goods with microchips that allow stolen property to be identified and returned to its owner.

“Trace pens are another tool in our repertoire we can use to make our belongings unattractive to thieves,” says past Chair Marion Macdonald.

The group also sells books that landowners can use to grant permission to hunters to be on their land, giving the ability to specify timelines for use as well as activities allowed while on the land.

Prior to the pandemic, the society held regular information sessions that included RCMP presentations, self-de-

fence courses, and were planning more when meeting restrictions made it impossible to meet in person as a group.

FRCW plans to resume these types of education sessions as soon as is possible.

Using locks and gates or reporting suspicious activity to the RCMP by phone or social media goes a long way to stop crime before it happens.

Macdonald says, “We have to watch out for our neighbours. That’s a thing that we’ve lost in society. We need to bring back people watching out for their community.”

A community with more crime reduction tools and with effective suspicious activity reporting is a less attractive, riskier target for criminals, is the hope Flagstaff Rural Crime Watch has.

Gravel Gravel is available for sale to a maximum of 150 tonnes/year per residential/farm/acreage site. Gravel is not available for sale to commercial users. Anyone wishing to purchase gravel must contact the Public Works Department to obtain a “Permission for Purchase of Gravel” form. Gravel will not be loaded out of a pit without this form. Grant will expand new ag/food supply chain and product development project in Flagstaff Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Flagstaff County Council approved a recommendation from Economic Development to access $20,000 in Community Demonstration Project funding through BREOC, during its regular meeting on April 14, to further develop and implement a new intent to buy local program for food and agriculture supply chain and product development. BREOC is the Battle River Economic Opportunities Committee, and was developed in response to the coal transition policies of the provincial and federal governments.

Economic Development Officer Kristy Jackson told Council that the Flagstaff Region BREOC communities, Forestburg, Heisler, and Flagstaff County, are eligible for funding for a community development project (CDP) that benefits the region.

“Together with the villages, we discussed op-

tions where $20,000 would significantly enhance private sector development,” said Jackson.

She told Council that the Economic Development has recently received a final market research report done on local food and ag supply chains, presenting a copy of the report to Council.

“The research involved interviews with agriculture and food producers in the region and focused on identifying implementation options to support the growth, enhancement, and development of this supply chain. Clear next steps to support the sector development are outlined in the report and fit the criteria for the BREOC CDP.” The grant had already received conditional BREOC approval, subject to Council agreement, and would involve $20,000 grant funding, with a commitment of $5,000 from Flagstaff County, which had already been budgeted for this project.

Jackson said the addi-

tional $20,000 will allow the project to advance quite a bit further than initially planned for 2021 with the budgeted $5,000 investment.

“This will allow more rapid development and growth of this project, allowing phase two to be completed by the end of 2021.”

In the grant application, the county indicated that the research report findings revealed a desire by consumers for sourcing food locally, as well as a desire for ag/food producers to expand their offerings to meet that demand.

Jackson said her department was exploring the diversification of the Flagstaff Crafted brand idea into a shop flagstaff program specific to local agri-food products, i.e.

“Flagstaff Fresh.”

She told Council, “The project merges local demand with local offerings available, and will generate avenues for new markets.”

More details will be revealed later in 2021.

OBITUARY Debby Lynn Koenig December 18, 1957 to April 19, 2021 Debby Lynn Koenig was born in Killam, Alberta, on December 18, 1957, to William and Ethel Croskery. Debby was raised in Strome, Alberta by her mom and step-father Chester.

Debby graduated from

Daysland school when she was 18. Debby married the love of her life Edward Koenig on July 31, 1976, together they had two wonderful children who they raised on an acreage just outside of Galahad.

Debby would spend the summers in her garden. In the winter you

could find her around the table playing Stock Ticker with her family. Debby loved animals and had an abundance of them. In 2002, Debby and Ed decided to retire to Camrose to be closer to their children.

Left to cherish her memory are: her husband of 44 years Ed Koenig;

Faith Column: This Too Shall Pass Over the past year, discussion has often turned to what we have learned from our pandemic reality. Many people have looked to faith, astronomy, and the wonders of creation to remind them that there is something bigger at play in the world. Some took the opportunity to focus on bettering themselves and some numb the stress, anxiety, and grief by any means necessary for mere survival. Most of us fall somewhere in between depending on the day.

For me, my faith has been both an immense comfort and a constant challenge, as I struggle to find ways to share the message of hope and love, that is the foundation of my belief, in an increasingly divided and fearful world. All too

often I am paralyzed by the enormity of the problems we encounter daily.

How can speaking words of kindness be enough to invoke the changes needed in our world, but what else is there that one person can possibly do?

When our first child was born, a friend offered me this advice saying, "this too shall pass." This phrase has stuck with me since as a poignant reminder that not just the hard things will pass, but the good too, so take nothing for granted. It is also a reminder that our kindness could be the thing that helps another get passed the hard thing in their life so always be kind. My faith tells me: “For this slight momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond

all measure...” 2 Corinthians 4:17.

On the good days, I can remind myself of this. I breathe deep the presence of the Holy reminding me I am not alone; that there are others out there struggling, there are others doing all they can to share kindness and love. On the harder days, this becomes more of a mantra that keeps me afloat, “this too shall pass,” just hang in there.

It is a reminder to allow myself to just absorb the comfort of others until I am once again strong enough to offer comfort myself.

Every single day I see and hear hurtful and divisive comments shared.

It is breaking my heart.

So let us all take every opportunity to be kind and be the thing that

Our family has been enjoying the scavenger hunt put on by the family resource centre in Killam and their partners. Every week, since the beginning of April, we receive three clues for locations within Flagstaff County and make our way to collect the items. Some of the treasures were sidewalk chalk, a bubble wand, honey, lip balm, cookie dip ingredients, and many more. We have been making it into an excursion by visiting the playground in each town we've been to.

Strome was quite the surprise. What an amazing playground they have. We actually happened to be exploring Sedgewick Lake Park when we received the clue for this week and on the way out of the park, found the next treasure box. Slowly we're making our way through the entire County. About 50 families are participating and we can't thank Jessica Docksteader and all the community partners enough for such a creative way to get out and enjoy spring.

Only a couple more weeks and Lougheed will have their greenhouse opening up. Mark your calendar and make sure to stop by.

At the beginning of

April the Iron Creek 4-H Club was collecting donations for the Flagstaff Food bank. They were able to collect 498 pounds of food and $950 in cash.

What an amazing accomplishment. Thanks to all who contributed and to the 4-H club for spending their Saturday giving back to the community.

Be skeptical about miracle products A few years ago, the CFIA (Canadian Food Inspection Agency) changed their rules for the registration of fertilizer products. Up until then, any registered product had to be shown to be both effective and safe for the environment. Well, they changed the rules so that now a fertilizer only needs to be proven to be safe. There are some “fertilizer” products out there that may not actually improve yield, but they are safe!

Previously, we already had several micronutrient companies out there selling their products and mixes with a variety of claims.

Since the change in rules there has been an explosion of companies selling trace mineral products “guaranteeing” great returns on your investment in their products.

If anyone is interested, you should read the book “How to Lie with Statistics.” It is a quick read, but does explain the different techniques using statistics to sell products. They have lots of little tricks like only showing the top part of a graph to exaggerate small differences or not including how many times a trial was conducted and cherry-picking the one trial that shows what they want. It reminds me of the old statement “If you

can’t dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with BS.” One red flag that comes up is when the product relies only on testimonials from other farmers. You have no idea what occurred in their fields or the changes they may have been making in the fields where the product was used. Often, I have seen a producer change six things in a field then attribute a yield improvement to one change and ignore the rest.

Some companies use research data from other countries, using that research to support their product’s use in Canada. In one instance the research was done in Turkey, where the soils have been farmed for thousands of years, versus less than one hundred and fifty years on the Prairies. Statistics need to be repeatable to be held as true. If a response only happens once in 20 trials, that is mere random chance.

Ideally, you want to see an economic response at least greater than 50% of the time.

A lot of this is just a reminder to be skeptical about any claims related to trace mineral fertilizer product efficacy. Whether they are a seed coating or applied to the crop, be skeptical. If you are interested in a particular product, con-

duct your own research. With modern GPS on seeders and combines it should be easy to run a few strip trials for yourself. It may take a bit of time but it does answer the question of worthwhile expenses. Prove to yourself a product is worth its cost. It should be replicated several times in a field. The more times it is replicated, the more accurate is your answer. Repeated over a couple or three years is even better as some products may only respond in certain climatic conditions.

Measure results, don’t rely on anecdotal reckoning. Don’t rely on crop colour change, but yield. If you spray iron on an emerged crop, it turns a dark green. This doesn’t indicate a shortage of iron, as our soils are rich in iron. And it does nothing for the yield, it is just a colour change. Stick to those changes that make a positive difference to your bottom line.

Since you are paying the bill, it only makes sense to make sure you are compensated for the dollars invested in fertilizer. Be suspicious if the “must have” product is only $7 - $10/acre. Test and measure for yourself. Other than copper on wheat, most micronutrients will not pay for themselves. Don’t believe me, test it for yourself.

Funds being raised after Viking-area senior devastated by fire Patricia Harcourt Staff Reporter

A senior living north of Viking just off Highway 36 has endured a devastating loss as fire claimed her house and contents and three beloved pets.

Edie Hoffman lived in the three-bedroom cedar house along with her grandson, Kolby Cameron, who arrived a couple of months earlier to live with her and start over in this rural community.

“Three lives were lost in the fire,” he said, referring to the pain for his grandmother in not being able to get her three cats out of the house.

The fire started at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 21, and within 15 minutes the house was gone.

“She was at home all by herself,” he said, but still managed to get her dogs, a yellow lab named Lacey and a younger black lab/Australian Shepherd cross named Stark, out of the house.

After that, she stood and watched her home burn to the ground while phoning the fire department and then Kolby.

“Grandma called me and said, ‘you’ve got to come home because the house is on fire,’” he said.

“I was at work. I beat the fire department there by a couple of minutes. The fire department did their best to extinguish it but we have lost the house in its entirety.”

Kolby recalled having to quickly pick up Lacey and carrying the dog out of harm’s way. “She was pretty heavy,” he said, with a bit of a laugh. “It’s funny looking back at it, it could have been so much worse.”

Meanwhile, the firefighters jumped into action to keep the fire from spreading fur-

ther into the trees and surrounding grass.

Later, black looking ditches along the highway revealed just how quickly the flames were starting to spread in the dry conditions of this spring.

A cause of the fire cannot be determined as everything was burned up in the fire, said Kolby.

Now his most important task is to look after his grandmother and do his best to help her recover from the loss. They are staying with Edie’s daughter and trying to keep things going despite the massive setback.

“Grandma’s very overwhelmed,” he said, a feeling that can come on when dealing with even little losses like not being able to walk her dog as his leash is not there.

“She’s trying to be strong,” Kolby said, but tears are also part of the scenario.

“There’s been lots of that.”

“We’re doing pretty good,” he said.

“We’re just trying to get by.” But there are now many financial concerns to deal with as Edie is a pensioner now with unexpected expenses such as a fire bill to deal with.

“We don’t have any money for that,” he said, expressing the fear of losing the property. Affording another house is likely not in the cards either.

But the community has stepped up in an overwhelming way with contributions to a GoFundMe page from many friends in Viking and area. So far, the largest contribution has been from the Norseman Inn in Camrose for $1,000.

“The owner is a very good family friend of ours,” said Kolby.

But many others are contributing whatever they can to help out the 72-year-old grandmother. As of Tuesday afternoon, 64

For now, thoughts turn to how to put things right, as much as is possible. If they could, the dream would be to place a trailer or mobile home on the property so Edie could return to live there as she has for the past 30 plus years.

But as Edie is on a fixed income, her family is exploring any possible options.

“We’re looking at a trailer or motor home,” said Kolby. “We’re looking at options on how to maybe make that happen.”

In the meantime, the family is most grateful for the help and support of the community. A long-time friend even lent Edie her car to use: “She’s very touched,” by this act of kindness, he said.

“I’d like to thank everybody for being so generous and so kind to our family,” said Kolby. “Grandma can’t thank everybody enough.

But although the losses are devastating, he was grateful that it wasn’t worse.

“I’m thankful not that we got off as bad as we did, but as good as we did,” he said.

It is recommended that you use non-combustible materials, such as gravel, brick, or concrete in the five food area adjacent to your home, with fire-resistant plants and shrubs in that area. Using gravel mulch or decorative crushed rock in gardens adjacent to the house is suggested over cedar or wood mulch.

“A mowed lawn is a fire-resistant lawn.

Grasses shorter than 10 cm are less likely to burn intensely.”

Regularly clean up accumulations of fallen branches.

On farm property, grain fields near or next to building sites should be worked up. Hay fields next to your yard should be cut as late in the sea-

Cannady says old equipment can prevent firefighters from gaining access to sloughs or dugouts, or to a fire.

When fire departments are called out to wildfires, there’s usually a

limit, but that it varies from company to company.

Seasonal or rental dwellings may not have any fire department expense coverage at all, and she recommends checking with your broker on that type of property.

Farm dwellings generally have the same types of coverages as homeowners policies, but Pierce says it’s important to note that farm outbuildings are not covered for fire department charges if they are not scheduled on a farm pol-

icy.

She adds, “It is also important to note that fire department charges resulting from a bare land fire, for example a lightning strike in a field starting a fire, are covered under the Forest and Prairie Fire Fighting Expense Coverage – a coverage that is required to be purchased as an additional coverage on your policy.”

She says that rider can be relatively inexpensive, from $25/year for $25,000 coverage to $100/year for $100,000

coverage, again, depending on the company who offers the insurance.

Cannady says that fires requiring multiple departments can result in higher fire fighting invoices.

Pierce says most commercial building insurance comes with some kind of fire department expense coverage, but if you have unique hazards related to the business, you might want to double check on your policy limits, and check to make sure your policy coverage includes that.

Plan to make your spring cleaning FireSmart this year

With spring finally here, Alberta Agriculture and Forestry’s FireSmart specialist Laura Stewart shares some of the best ways to live with and manage the impacts of wildfire on our surroundings.

“With the change in seasons, many Albertans have spring cleaning on their minds and are starting to clean up their yards on their farms or acreages,” Stewart said. “Some outdoor maintenance activities can be done in the early spring to help protect your home from the damages of wildfire, as we see the wildfire danger rise dramatically in late April and May.” According to her, to manage the impact of wildfire on our surroundings is a shared responsibility between community members, community leaders, forest companies, industry, and government.

“When it comes to their

property, homeowners need to take ownership and action to protect their homes,” Stewart added.

Understanding your risk The first thing to do is walk around your property to identify wildfire risks.

Start with the first five feet around the entire home and any attachments, such as decks.

“What combustible fuels are you keeping closest to your home? You want to keep a special eye out for things like dry leaves, grass and twigs, firewood piles, construction materials, and patio furniture.

Whenever possible, you want to move these items at least 33 feet from the home or safely store them in a garage or shed,” she explained.

Embers ignite more than half of homes damaged or destroyed by wildfire.

Research has shown that structural modifications, like fire-resistant building materials, can reduce the

risk of wildfire damage up to 40 per cent. If you’re making important structural modifications and moving those combustible fuels farther away from your home, you can reduce wildfire risk by up to 75 per cent.

Simple steps that make a big impact “Here are some simple actions that homeowners can take to address four key areas of the home,” Stewart noted. “Both immediate, roll-up-yoursleeves maintenance activities and longer-term planning are included.”

Roof Keep the roof clean and clear of combustible debris, such as leaves, twigs and branches.

Upgrade roof to a Class A ignition resistant roofing material. Class A roofing materials include clay tile, concrete tile, metal and asphalt shingles.

Siding, vents and openings Examine siding for locations where embers could accumulate or hide.

Inspect vents and openings often to ensure they are in good repair and combustible debris is removed. Stucco, brick, fibre cement boards/panels and poured concrete siding all offer superior fire resistance. Consider upgrading to a non-combustible siding material.

Enjoying time on the deck or patio with naturally grown pest repellants Leslie Cholowsky The odd warm day of spring brings a promise of days to come, of enjoying the sunshine in your special outdoor space, whether it’s your deck, a small patio space, or around the fire pit.

Unfortunately, summer will also bring some unwanted visitors in the form of mosquitoes.

However, there are a number of plants that naturally repel these pests, and a few things you can do around the yard to make your outdoor space less attractive for mosquitoes.

Removing standing water from around the yard can make a real difference. Mosquitoes don’t need a lot of water to successfully breed, and a daily walk-around your property can uncover small standing pools in things like kids toys, empty flower pots, and other small receptacles that can hold even a few inches of water.

Even clogged gutters can lead to accumulation, enough for mosquitoes to breed.

Remove these potential breeding grounds when you find them, and consider adding a water pump to bird baths to keep water circulating.

Mosquitoes mature from eggs to nymphs in roughly four days, so doing this every day or every other day can help reduce the local population.

Mowing regularly is another way to make your yard less hospitable to

these blood-sucking pests.

Mosquitoes seek tall grass to protect them from sun and wind, so mowing and keeping your grass relatively short can help make your lawn less attractive to them.

There are also many attractive plants that mosquitoes just can’t stand due to the scents they emit.

Putting some of these in pots or planters around your favourite outdoor areas can help reduce the amount of bug spray required to spend some enjoyable time in your yard.

Basil is not only good for flavouring sauces and salads, it also works to keep mosquitoes away. The plant naturally emits a pleasant aroma, to humans, that is actually toxic to mosquitoes. If you do keep a bird bath, planting basil nearby can help deter mosquitoes from using it to lay their eggs.

Basil grows best in full sun and well drained soil.

It also repels flies, and is safe for humans.

Bee balm, otherwise known as wild bergamot or horsemint, not only repels mosquitoes, but it attracts bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies to your garden. It’s also used to flavour jellies, tea, and can be used as a delicious garnish. It likes full sun best, and grows up to four feet tall.

Catnip is another effective mosquito repellant, especially if you have cats.

It’s safe for human skin, and will act as a cat attractant, so ensuring it is in a cat-friendly spot is proba-

Citronella is another very effective mosquito repellant. Its strong scent masks the carbon dioxide in our breath that attracts mosquitoes in the first place. It’s very low maintenance, grows in full sun and partial shade, and also repels flies, an added bonus. It can grow five to six feet tall, and is safe for skin.

Other effective repel-

lants include garlic, which works when grown, eaten, or even rubbed on the skin, but beware, doing the latter may repel more than mosquitoes!

Marigolds are a popular flower for pots, planters, and flower gardens, with a strong fragrance that deters not only mosquitoes, but deer and rabbits.

Butterflies and bees love this plant, which is also safe for skin.

Marigolds are easy to grow, prefer full sun, and come in a variety of sizes and colours.

Other herbs that not only repel mosquitoes but

can be harvested and used in the kitchen include peppermint and rosemary.

Rosemary is most effective as a repellent when burned, so tossing some in the fire every now and again is the best way to use

this herb to repel mosquitoes.

Sage is another repellant that works best to deter mosquitoes when burned.

Growing sage attracts hummingbirds, and also repels ticks.

Ceremonial sod turning for trees to be planted for volunteers Patricia Harcourt In spring, thoughts turn to working the earth and planting any variety of crops and plants.

For Viking/Beaver Family and Community Support Services (FCSS), an idea sprang forth from a desire to honour the community’s many volunteers. Usually, volunteers are thrown a lunch-

eon and given newly hatched greenhouse plants and flowers as a sign of appreciation.

However, this year that was not possible because of the pandemic, so another more permanent way was found by way of planting trees to honour volunteers as a legacy going forward.

On April 20, town Councillor and FCSS rep.

Judy Acres and Nancy Mizera, Chair of the Viking Community Wellness Society, performed a ceremonial planting ceremony for trees that will be part of the society’s new walking trail project.

Two days later, Holden Mayor Joy Zoopkow did the official sod turning for the trees that will be planted at Serenity

Gardens. The gardens will surround the Holden Art Gallery as a peaceful and serene place for the public to relax and enjoy the plants and foliage that will be created there this year.

Also attending both

ceremonies was Viking/Beaver FCSS Director Dawn Chrystian, who said that if it had not been for the pandemic restrictions, the ceremonies would have been far larger and inclusive of the commu-

nities involved.

But they still served to mark the occasion of both sites receiving $500 each from a grant received by FCSS, “to sponsor trees in recognition of our volunteers,” said Chrystian.

Even perennials need regular care and attention in order to thrive Perennials can add colour and vibrancy to any garden.

One of the more desirable components of perennials is that they come back year after year, meaning homeowners do not have to invest in a gardenful of new flowers every year.

That can add up to considerable savings.

Perennials often form the foundation of beautiful gardens, and providing a beautiful backdrop to a variety of annuals that can be

changed from year to year.

Annuals only grow for one season, produce seeds and then die. However, perennials die back to the ground every autumn and their roots survive the winter.

Some perennials are short-lived, meaning they will come back a few consecutive years; others will last for decades.

Though planted perennials require less maintenance than annuals, they are not completely maintenance-

free.

Certain care is needed to help perennials thrive, and that starts with the soil. In fact, soil is the single most important factor for growing healthy plants. Most perennials grow ideally in well drained, fertile soil with a pH of 6.0 to 7.0.

In addition, organic matter can improve soil texture and water-holding ability.

When including perennials in the garden, make sure you wait for the right time to plant them.

Pandemic has brought change to food consumer behaviour Leslie Cholowsky More and more Albertans are trending towards growing and buying locally grown and raised food products.

A study of local food demand in Alberta done for Alberta Agriculture and Forestry reports that the demand for locally produced food in Alberta has risen as consumers’ interest in the foods they eat, and where the food was grown, has increased.

Producers are selling local food to Albertans through market channels like farmers markets, u-picks, on-farm stores, roadside and parking lot stands, as well as local restaurants who source food ingredients directly from Alberta producers.

The popularity of open air or farmer’s markets, continues to grow in Alberta, with almost 1.3 million Albertans making a purchase from farmer’s markets, in 2016, the date the study was done.

Another half a million people purchased from farm retail.

This segment of the market is expected to explode, especially after the pandemic raised the issue of food security and availability, and Albertans turned to locally grown and sourced food choices.

Albertans are very lucky to have access to a wide range of locally grown food, and almost every Albertan household has purchased local food at least once.

Food safety was the number one reason why Albertans chose to purchase local food, with the desire to support Alberta’s family farms a very close second.

Freshness, quality, taste, and nutritional value all rank very high with Albertans who choose to buy local food products.

Age played a surprising factor in who is most like-

ly to shop for local food, with individuals between 18 and 34 the most likely, and those aged 35 to 44 the least likely.

Rural households ranked higher than urban households, being significant consumers of farm retail food, willing to travel to purchase local food over imported.

COVID-19 emerged as a driving change in consumer behaviour in 2020, but there’s reason to believe that certain fundamental shifts will have long-lasting effects, and the potential to open new markets for local food producers.

Emerging themes arising out of the pandemic include shifting to value-

based products and essentials, shopping and selling online, and focusing more on health, quality, safety, and a ‘caring’ economy.

Healthy eating was identified as one of the most prominent consumer trends in the past decade, and COVID-19 prompted Alberta’s consumers to protect themselves for the future by spending more on healthy, safe, and immunity building food and beverages.

More Albertans are cooking at home than ever before, purchasing essentials over pre-made or pre-packaged foods, with steady growth in Albertans looking for healthy meal solutions, packages, and recipes.

GFoundation’s Annual Tree Planting this year a celebration of their successes Moush John The Global Foundation for Social Harmony & Sustainable Development (GFoundation) will have their annual tree planting event on June 5 and 6.

According to the organization, President Winston Gereluk is in a celebrating mood. GFoundation is celebrating the progress it has made in recent years in a number of areas.

“We want this year’s tree planting to be a celebration of our successes,” said Gereluk.

“You are urged to, once again, join the tree planting and campfire celebrations that have become a GFoundation tradition. In the face of dire predictions for an uncertain future, our volunteers have planted thousands of trees, and have

continued to care for them over the years.”

Among the precautions put in place are the monitoring of the pandemic numbers and measures. On both days, orientation and tree planting will start at 1 p.m., ending at 5 p.m. with potluck campfire social, which will include dinner, refreshments, and musical celebrations.

“This year’s tree planting marks a turning point, as we have never had so many projects on the go,” he said. “And we have never called on volunteers to help out in so many different ways. We have also undertaken to connect landowners and residents within the 7,000 acres that surround us, informing and involving them in protecting our common watershed and supporting the

UN-designated Beaver Hills Biosphere in which we all live.”

According to Gereluk, this has boosted their political influence, which have led to successful efforts with other organizations to convince the Alberta government to abandon plans to cut provincial parks or to cut oil and gas industry taxes to neighbouring municipalities.

“These combined efforts with our fellow wetland residents have inspired more people to get involved with GFoundation, which is enabling more effective action.”

In addition to tree planting, the GFoundation is involved in forest management, wetland restoration and watershed protection projects, in most cases doing so in cooperation with other actors and levels of governments.
