At approximately 7:30 a.m.on Thursday, April 16, a CN train derailed five loaded grain cars near CN’s Scotford Yard in Strathcona County. CN employees were clearing away debris around 11:15 a.m. when this photograph was taken just west of the city limits. CN reported the cars were carrying canola, no dangerous goods involved in the incident. The track was reopened later that afternoon.

MC Mae Adamyk thanked everyone for “making the evening such a success,” by demonstrating their generosity and displaying their compassion. Patrie is one of those giving people. She is just recovering from cancer treatments, and spent many months this past winter crafting a one-ofkind CAT quilt, that was

purchased during the live auction for $1,500 by Daniel and Delores Warawa, who are neighbours of Gail and her husband Leonard, who live in the Mundare area. Both Gail and Daniel also received support from Haying In The ‘30’s when they were undergoing cancer treatments. Shirley Hope, also cancer survivor, was in attendance during this year’s fundraiser. Both Shirley and her husband Paul donated the St. Michael sign that was auctioned off during the live auction as well. The sign was purchased by Mae and Tom Adamyk, who decided to donate the sign to the St. Michael & District Agricultural Society. Both Mae and Tom are long time members of the ag. society, which hosts the annual Haying

But that wasn’t the case for 35 Grade 6 students from Lamont Elementary School when they visited Lamont County council chambers during a field trip on Tuesday, April 15th. Community development proposed for Queen’s Street in Bruderheim Michelle Pinon Editor

Bruderheim Mayor Karl Hauch knows that good things come to those who wait. In fact, those were his exact words before Tim Hennigar, realtor and representative for Wes and Judy Pon, who will developing a retail/residential development on Queen’s Street in Bruderheim started his presentation to town council on Wednesday, April 15.

“This structure is the first of a multi building site,” stated Hennigar who is with Century 21 A.L.L. Stars Reality Ltd. Hennigar first came before council a few years ago with the proposal, and shortly after, nine vacant lots were purchased by his clients. “Being an optimist; I had this made up,” stated Hennigar, holding up a detailed colour conceptual drawing, for council to view. Hennigar said it will be a “mixed develop-

ment” that will fit current zoning regulations, but a variance will be needed from the town to accommodate parking requirements. The initial phase of the plan includes four micro residential suites as well as a retail component. In fact, one of the potential tenants (physicians group), made an earlier presentation to council, and Hennigar said they are in talks about leasing the main floor of the facility which is expected to be in operation by Dec. 31,

2015. “I’ve had discussions with the doctors,” explained Hennigar, who has already submitted plans to the town. The plan also includes provisions for a courtyard to accommodate residents and clients alike. Eventually, Hennigar said the possibility of other medical services, i.e. dentist, optometrist, chiropractor, could all be possibilities. “If the development is as viable as we believe it to be, we’ll continue on with a laundromat,” added Hennigar. “One thing that council has learned, buildings like this don’t happen overnight,” stated Hauch, but the Mayor and rest of council, are looking favourably on this proposal.

Opinion From Where I Sit: Guilty Pleasure

By Hazel Anaka For years I believed that if I read anything other than non-fiction I was wasting my time. I knew there were more books I absolutely must read than there was time to read them, in one short lifetime. Or, if I did tackle some

fiction it had to be the ‘good stuff.’ What snobs would call literary. Titles that had won prizes like the Giller or Pulitzer. Or books that dominated best seller lists for months. Projects that were adapted for the big screen. Others that were part of Oprah’s or some other book club selection. Quite often, but not always, they earned the hype. Then somewhere along the way something shifted. I tired of the miracles glibly promised in the selfhelp titles I was buying. There are basic universal truths that remain immutable no matter

how creatively or cleverly or often they are repackaged. I tired of the ‘should read’ titles that weren’t worth the heavy work of plowing through them. I tired of finding that my interest in a particular topic waned by the time I got to ‘the’ book that would enlighten me. I confined my easy reading to vacation reading. Most publishers launch what they market as ‘beach reads’ for light, summer, drink in your hand, sun at your back relaxing. But realistically how many days out of the year is the average person on vacation?

I always have an audio book playing in the car. The boredom of highway driving or the white-knuckle frustration of city traffic is mitigated with a gripping story. What, I’m here already? It was probably audio books that got me on a mystery/thriller kick. A talented reader brings the book and its various characters to life. Because I loved Tami Hoag’s Ashes to Ashes on audio I then set out on a mission to find her other titles in paperback. I love the complexity of her stories and the twists and turns leading to the ultimate surprise end-

ing. Her recurring good guy characters are richly drawn, flawed but likable, dedicated professionals. Somehow I can distance myself from the incredible violence. I began devouring the Hoag titles at every available stolen moment: before bed, during meals, in the car, in waiting rooms. Because I was reading them faster than she can possibly write them, I had to pull back and save the last few titles. In between I made room for a Lisa Gardner. Next I might have to choose a Rock Mofina, Joseph Finder, Michael Connelly, Lynwood

Barclay, James Lee Burke, Lee Child. Right now I’m halfway through an easy read called Tales from the Yoga Studio. It’s not a mystery but I’m into the early stages of a yoga practice myself so this appeals to me. What all these books have in common is their ability to transport me from my own life using great plotting, strong characters, and visual imagery. They’re a great (harmless) strategy for unwinding after a long, hard day. They are my number one choice of a guilty pleasure, from where I sit.

To my way of thinking, a major disconnect is taking place between what's really true in Alberta and what is proposed. If anyone has the answer, PLEASE take the time to put it forward in this column. My realities are as follows: 1) Both the Federal Gov't and Bank of Canada Governor Stephen Polosz are repeatedly warning since early this year, "They are very concerned about the level of indebtedness in the general population." They are particularly concerned that the indebted will be unable to handle their debt when interest rates start to rise. 2) About 8,000 jobs have been lost in the Alberta oilpatch since

the significant drop in crude prices since late February. A recent news item reported thousands of RV's are being turned in to dealers because owner/purchasers are unable to maintain payments. When crude prices settled down around $50 a barrel, it took less than one week for the price of gasoline and diesel at service stations to jump 10 cents a litre for gasoline (diesel unknown); 10 cents equates to $14.40 per barrel to the industry. To the consumer it becomes the 10 cents litre tax, plus any tax the proposed budget may have imposed, all compounded by five per cent GST. I specifically mention the above by way of illustrating the degree of

flexibility; industry has: in addition to reducing dividends, cut back on bonuses, reduce expenses etc; a multitude of options. You the reader can answer what flexibility you or your neighbour has for dealing with the added, unexpected expense. The bottom line; what rational would influence the Provincial Gov't in the direction taken with the proposed budget. Especially when a majority of responders to Premier Prentice's question, recommended a charge on major corporations. I realize Premier Prentice rejected the recommendation made by a majority of Albertans with the statement, (more or less), "Many

Lamont Mayor Bill Skinner was on hand Monday, April 20 at the town office to accept a $1,000 cheque from Rick Burden, stakeholder relations manager for FortisAlberta, for earning third place in the Earth Hour Challenge. “It takes participation from everybody,” said Mayor Skinner, who was pleased with the results. Lamont was one of three communities in the province who received grants from FortisAlberta. Lamont saw a 15 per cent decrease in electricity consumption during Earth Hour that took place at 8:30 p.m. local time on Saturday, March 28. The town will be using the grant to upgrade lights at the fire hall and recreation centre. “People are definitely becoming

more green aware,” stated Burden. This is the second year FortisAlberta has held the Earth Hour Challenge. Of note, Lamont was one of 25 communities to participate in the challenge. Among all participating communities there was an average of an eight per cent decrease in consumption for a total of 18,796 kwh saved during the hour, enough to power more than 20,000 average homes during that time. Earth House is held every year in late March, around the time of the Spring and Autumn equinoxes in the northern and soutern hemispheres. This is when sunset times are almost the same in both hemispheres. Organizers say this ensures the greatest visual impact for a global ‘lights out’ event. On this day, six continents, 120 countries, and 24 time zones were united as a global community, making their voices heard through the individual action of turning off the lights.

Thiel’s Greenhouse hosts open house for local businesses Michelle Pinon Editor

Thiels Greenhouse hosted its first ever ‘Business to Business’ Open House & Tour on Thursday, April 9th. Approximately 50 people attended the event at the Bruderheim based business. “It was a very exciting day for us,” said award winning grower and owner Nadine Stielow. “We had 50 attendees with many of them being new wholesale contacts and municipal officials. Also, some current customers were able to attend. It was really nice to have the opportunity

to thank our current customers for their on-going support before the busyness of our season begins,” added Stielow. The greenhouse was brimming and blossoming with plants of all shapes, sizes and colours. The inviting oasis of green was a welcome sight after such a long winter. There are just under 10,000 geranium plants (30 varieties), a widely diverse assortment of tomato and pepper plants, herbs, and other vegetables in the 45,000 square foot facility. Altogether, there are more than 600 varieties of plants in the greenhouse, which is incredi-

bly impressive for this one acre production and retail facility. Nadine and her husband Bob are currently in the midst of developing the plans and infrastructure for a year round vegetable greenhouse. “I’m in the middle of fact finding and getting the recommendations from consultants,” pointed out Stielow. Being able to offer a fresh food supply to customers year round will be a great addition to the operation; and that is expected to happen sometime this year. Stielow said more and more people are getting into “healthy eating” and want to garden and do more growing in their yards. While “Staycation” maybe an overused word, Stielow added that more folks are wanting to stay home during their summer holidays. There is a whole new generation of green thumbs out there ready to explore, plant,

and reap the rewards of their own hard work. “We start from seeds or our own cuttings,” said Stielow, who expects kale, collards, and mustard greens to be popular picks this year. There are other varieties of plants (Patio Baby egg plant), (Saladmore Bush cucumbers), as well as herbs that are ideally suited to small space gardening that Thiels will have available for sale. She planted Lemongrass for the first time last year, and it became a very popular item amongst customers. The folks also make pallet gardens for people with limited space. Lamont area cattleman Kyle Wallgren of IYI Productions Inc. will be producing the 22nd edition of the Lamont BullA-Rama Supreme. Wallgren says “IYI Productions is looking forward to producing

this event for the Lamont Bull-A-Rama. We hope to put on a great show with the high caliber of riders and stock. It will not disappoint.” The event is sanctioned by the Bullriders of Canada, and is one of the “fastest growing” semi-professional circuits in the country, points out Wallgren.

There will be 12 different stock contractors, many of which have attended the Canadian Finals Rodeo (CFR) and Professional Bull Riding (PBR) world finals. “Contractors are also competing in a bull team competition at the event. Each contractor is bringing three bulls. The team with the highest score among their three bulls wins. Bulls are marked on rider time and rider score. This encourages the contractors to bring their best stock,” adds Wallgren. Some of the top bullriders, such as CFR and PBR World Qualifer contestants Ty Pankewitz and Zane Lambert., will be competing in the action packed thrill based competition. Australian Champion Josh Birks, who currently resides in Lamont, will also be competing in the event. Intermission will have

two local teams competing in a soccer game with a twist, notes Wallgren. “Bull-A-Rama consistently has a sell out show,” and Wallgren, expects the same to happen on April 25. The event, hosted by the Lamont & District Agricultural Society, is a must see for Lamont area residents Sharon MacLean and Mike Chernyk. “They’re always good...We love the bullriding and to see all the young, up and coming guys,” says MacLean. Bruderheim medical clinic slated to open May 1 Michelle Pinon Editor

Dr. Sonnie Oyama and PharmDr. Sinan Hadi are slated to open their medical clinic in Bruderheim on Friday, May 1st. The physicians will be opening the clinic that day, and have entered into a contract with the Town of Bruderheim to use the municipality’s meeting room three days a week. Plans are to operate on Wednesday and Friday evenings between 7-9 p.m. and Sundays from 12-2 p.m. “Depending on need we

may expand those hours,” stated Dr. Hadi, who made a power point presentation before town council on April 15. Dr. Hadi outlined their plans and services. Dr. Hadi said he is qualified to prescribe and initiate therapy and medications as well as administer drugs by injections and order laboratory tests for patients. Dr. Hadi is a certified clinical pharmacist and is licensed to practise in Alberta and Ontario. He is also certified in diabetes, respiratory disorders, anti-coagulaiton, psoriasis, opioids

dependence, pain management and women’s health. Some of the general services he and Dr. Oyama can provide are: medical and pharmaceutical consultations, medication reviews, travel health and pain management clinics, periodic medical exams, occupational health and spirometry, (lung function assessments). “When you see a document on the future of medical services in Bruderheim, it’s pretty exciting,” stated Mayor Karl Hauch. Coun. Wayne Olechow said it

would definitely be nice to be able to have a prescription filled in Bruderheim rather than having to travel to and from Bruderheim to Fort Saskatchewan for those kinds of services. Dr. Sadi and Dr. Oyama are looking into the viability of leasing space in the proposed new community development project on main street that is currrently in the works. As far as they are concerned, having medical services within the growing community will not only increase the economic status of the town but serve many families in the process. “This makes me extremely happy,” said coun. Shelley Ross, and may assist in the future needs of seniors in the community and potential for a new lodge. Mayor Hauch said he would do what he could to promote the medical clinic.

Even though Jessalyn Vandelannoite is in the middle of final exams, the first year education student at Athabasca University takes the time to acknowledge the most recent scholarship she was presented with from the Chipman Lions Club. Vandelannoite, who currently serves as Vice President for the

Chipman 4-H Beef Club, is grateful for all of the support she has received over the years. â€œI am very thankful for the scholarships that the Lions Club has presented me with. With all of the scholarships I have received, Iâ€™ve put them toward my education (elementary education). Iâ€™ve enjoyed being part of various 4-H groups, (Elk Island Light Horse Club, Lamont 4-H Multi Club, and Chipman 4-H

Beef Club), since the age of nine. 4-H has taught me that hard work pays off, how to record keep, and how to be able to comfortably talk in front of an audience.â€? Vandelannoite said she is also busy preparing her calves for the annual show and sale that will be held in Chipman on June 1. When she does get any free time, Vandelannoite enjoys training and riding her horses. â€œAlong with

attaining my teaching degree, the plan is to purchase more cattle and go into business with my Dad.â€? She is also excited to begin the next chapter in her life, farming and teaching, and learning many more things about herself along the way. â€œLooks like Iâ€™m a little bit of my Dadâ€™s girl (farming), and a little bit of my Momâ€™s girl (teaching)....I am being given the best of both worlds!â€? The 19-year-old is also overjoyed to receive the scholarships from the Lions. â€œIt is an honour to live in the Lamont community, where good things people do, do not go unnoticed.â€?

St. Michael Access Road Chip Seal and Other Work Two tender bids came in for chip seal work at Range Road 184 North from Hwy. 29 to Twp 562 with the lowest at $287,699 by West-Can Seal Coating. The bid comes in under the budget set for the project. Council agreed to accept the tender, and work should be starting shortly. Lamont West Overlay ACP & Other Work Four tender bids came in for work on Range Road 195 North from Hwy. 15 to Hwy. 29. The lowest bid came in at $638,868.30, from Devlin Construction Ltd. The bid comes in under the budget set for the project. Council agreed to award the bid, and work should be starting shortly. Strategic Planning Process Council had previously approved using a resource from the Province to develop a new strategic plan. A proposal of Strategic Planning Workshops intended for the community, staff and council, has been provided by a consultant from Alberta Culture and Tourism, at no cost to the County. Council will defer making a decision until the next council meeting. Bridge Funding Every year Council creates a list of bridges to be repaired and maintained.
