All Lamont County pharmacies offering vaccines BY JANA SEMENIUK All pharmacies across Lamont County are now offering the COVID-19 vaccine. “We got our vaccine supply a week ago,” said Andrew Pharmacy owner/pharmacist Asif Majeed. “And since then, we have vaccinated about 25 people.” Majeed indicated he would like to vaccinate more people but is limited as he only received the AstraZeneca vaccine which has age limits. “We have the AstraZeneca vaccine which can only be given to those who are 55–64 years old as long as they have no underlying health conditions,” he said. “If we could get Moderna here in Andrew we could vaccinate about 80 per cent of the people who belong to the senior group.” According to Canada.ca, the Moderna vaccine is approved for people over the age of 18.
In addition to age limits, Majeed indicated that the ability to travel is also hampering Andrew residents’ vaccination efforts. “I got a call from one of my patients who is 75 years old,” he said. “Because the AstraZeneca is only good for up to 64 years old, I told her to call Smoky Lake or Lamont but she said that’s the limiting factor for her because she doesn’t drive and uses walking aides.” Majeed surmised the problem could be due to supply. “It could be a supply problem because Alberta Health told us they are working on that,” he said. “We may or may not get it in the coming days. I wish and hope we get it in.” Pharmacies in Bruderheim, Mundare and a second pharmacy in Lamont are also offering the AstraZeneca vaccine while the Value Drug Mart in Lamont currently carries the Moderna.

Local businesses impacted by pandemic restrictions BY JANA SEMENIUK Local businesses are feeling the crunch of another phase one lockdown and patiently waiting for the easing of restrictions. “I have noticed a decline in sales,” said Deb Fountain, owner of Lamont’s Trendy Petals flower shop. “I am only allowed two customers in the store at a time.” Fountain further noted that as a result, she is forced to limit her stock. “I have to be careful about how much product I bring in so that I’m not left with unsold product or fresh flowers,” she said. “I’ll be happy when this is over.” During the live COVID-19 update given by Alberta premier Jason Kenney on Apr. 6, David Staples, columnist for the Edmonton Journal, asked Kenney if the number of vaccinated Albertans would contribute to the easing of restrictions as was the case south of the border.
“We saw in Texas once they got to 15 per cent of single dose vaccination, they opened up considerably. What are our markers for opening up considerably and how quickly is that going to come about in terms of the timeframe?” he asked. Kenney pointed out disparities between Alberta and Texas. “In Texas they had a much higher natural infection rate and immunity from that. They had 300 percent more deaths per capita than we had in Alberta so I wouldn’t regard that as
any kind of a COVID policy model,” he said. “The US is also three times faster than we are in terms of vaccinating the population and that includes Texas.” Additionally, Kenney included projections. “We project that by around the end of May nearly half of Albertans will have achieved some level of protection. We believe that once we get to that point, we can move to higher capacity limits and have larger gatherings and move forward substantially,” he said. “The end of June around 64 percent

will have some level of immunity and potentially we can look forward to lifting almost all restrictions.” To date, Alberta has given single doses of the vaccine to just over 15 per cent of its four and a half million population, and almost two percent have received both doses according to health infobase. Meanwhile, Texas is the largest of the 48 contiguous US states with a population of more than 29 million according to world population review. As of Apr. 8, Texas has had two and a half million cases of COVID-19 with just over 48,000 deaths according to county.org. In addition, Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott lifted the mask mandate and capacity limits on March 10 for all businesses. He said that this order ensures that “all businesses and families in Texas have the freedom to determine their own destiny.”
