Local farmers meet with Ukrainian delegates Michelle Pinon Editor The Ukrainian Village was one of the stops agriculturalists from the Ukraine made on Sunday, March 22nd. Genia Leskiw, Bonnyville-Cold Lake Constituency and chair of the ACAUR Advisory Council Alberta Ukrainian Relations, was happy to host the five member deligation. Leskiw was also happy to invite seven local farmers to participate in the exchange. Those farmers included: former premier Ed Stelmach, Ray Lopushinksy, Kim Lopushinksy, Roy Bryks, Roy Anaka, Daniel Warawa and Terry Eleniak. Also in attendance was Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville MLA Jacquie Fenske, who officially brought greetings on behalf of the provincial government. Fenske, Leskiw and Stelmach all took an active role in preparing and hosting of the meeting. “Primarily,” stated Leskiw, “the exchange of opinions was around possible internship programs between the U of A and Ukrainian agricultural universities, the depth of Ukrainian agricultural roots in Alberta and current situation in Eastern Ukraine. The Ukrainian delegation was glad to meet local farmers of Ukrainian descent, including a greatgreat-grandson (Terry Eleniak) of one of the first two Ukrainian settlers to Canada (Wasyl Eleniak).

Members of the Ukrainian delegation included: Andriy Popov, Volodymyr Ladyka, Dmytro Onopriyenko, Stanislav Nikolaienko, and Valentyna Aranchiy. All of the Ukrainian delegation were high ranking officials and university professors that impressed local participants. Leskiw added that the trip was organized by the Canadian Bureau of International Education (CBIE)

and included visits to universities in Winnipeg, Saskatoon and Edmonton. “The purpose of the trip was learning about the Canadian system of agricultural education, latest and greatest in agri-science, and learning about university governance from Canadian counterparts.”

Wildrose calls for creation of Alberta Columbia

MICHELLE PINON PHOTO

It was a snowy and blustery day on Wednesday, April 1st in Lamont. Snow fell at a steady pace as the wind gusted at 31 km/hr with the temperature at 1 celsius.

EDMONTON, AB (April 1, 2015): Today, the Wildrose Official Opposition called for the Alberta annexation of British Columbia in an effort to diversify the economy and solve Alberta's looming fiscal crisis. With a culture of balanced budgets, fishing, hydro, BC’s wine country and an expansion of Alberta’s current ski resort network, Wildrose Leader Brian Jean said the move would be step one in getting Alberta off the so-called “energy rollercoaster.” “With the conservative culture of balanced budgets in BC, this annexation makes sense. Albertans are looking for new leadership that provides real solutions to the current economic and fiscal crisis,” Jean said. “Through diversification, and overtaking a province of 4.6 million people, Alberta

Columbia will be able to become a beacon of prosperity for the entire country.” The initiative would be pivotal in opening up new markets for Alberta’s landlocked economy, and lead to the biggest growth of pipeline expansion in Canadian history. “Our energy companies love it, Albertans love it, Brian Jean and it means immediate access to the world’s markets,” Jean said. “This will restore the Alberta Columbia Advantage, and lead to even brighter future.”
