Climate change takes increasingly extreme toll on African countries

Costa Rica’s refugee lifeline at breaking point amid funding crisis

“Extreme weather and climate change impacts are hitting every single aspect of socio-economic development in Africa and exacerbating hunger, insecurity and displacement,” the UN World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said on Monday.

WMO said that average surface temperature across Africa in 2024 was approximately 0.86°C above the 1991–2020 average.

North Africa recorded the highest temperature change at 1.28°C above the 1991-2020 average, making it the fastest-warming sub-region of Africa.

Sea surface temperatures were also the highest on record.

“Particularly large increases in sea surface temperatures have been observed in the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea,” WMO said.

Data shows that almost the entire ocean area around Africa was affected by marine heatwaves of strong, severe or extreme intensity last year and especially the tropical Atlantic.

Head of WMO, Celeste Saulo, warned that climate change is an urgent and escalating problem across the African continent “with some countries grappling with exceptional flooding caused by excessive rainfall and others enduring persistent droughts and water scarcity”. (UN)

“Without funding, asylum seekers are left in limbo – undocumented, unsupported and increasingly desperate,” said Ruvendrini Menikdiwela, Assistant High Commissioner for Protection.

Her comments follow a 41 per cent budget cut to the UN agency’s operations in the country that have had devastating consequences. “This is not about luxuries; the assistance we’re cutting is critical and lifesaving,” she insisted.

The Central American nation today hosts more than 200,000 refugees and asylum seekers – adding up to nearly four per cent of its population.

More than eight in every 10 are from Nicaragua, fleeing deepening political and social turmoil linked to serious allegations of “systemic repression”, according to independent rights experts reporting to the Human Rights Council.

Despite economic constraints, Costa Rica has continued to offer safety and hope to those escaping persecution, UNHCR said.

On a recent official tour of Costa Rica, Ms. Menikdiwela described meeting indigenous Miskito women who had fled gender-based violence and established safe spaces, despite language and cultural barriers.

Guterres welcomes India-Pakistan ceasefire

More than 36 million are struggling to meet their basic food needs, which is projected to rise to over 52 million during the lean season from June to August, latest analysis reveals.

This includes almost three million people facing emergency conditions, and 2,600 people in Mali who are at risk of catastrophic hunger.

Although needs are at a historic high, resources are limited, with millions of lives at stake.

“Without immediate funding, WFP will be forced to scale down even further both in the number of people reached and the size of food rations distributed,” said Margot van der Velden, Regional Director for West and Central Africa.

In 2019, only four per cent of the population was food insecure compared to 30 per cent today, according to Ollo Sib, a senior research adviser with WFP. “We hope that our voice will be heard because this food security situation in the Sahel remains extremely difficult and dire,” he said, speaking from Dakar to journalists in Geneva.

Mr. Sib recently travelled to some of the affected areas, such as communities in northern Ghana grappling with unprecedented drought.

“They were forced to replant two to three times, and for them, each failed sowing is an additional financial burden as the cost of fertilisers and seeds were extremely high in those locations,” he said.

The assessment team also went to northern Mali, which is the only place in the region where people are facing catastrophic food security conditions. (UN)

The UN chief ’s statement, released on Saturday, came shortly after news broke of a decision by the two countries to de-escalate a situation that has caused widespread alarm in recent days.

Tensions had been steadily raising, after a group of gunmen fired on tourists visiting Jammu and Kashmir on 22 April, killing at least 26 and injuring scores more. India and Pakistan both administer parts of the Himalayan region but claim the territory in its entirety, and it has been a scene of unrest for decades.

In the past week, fears grew of an outright military confrontation, and the UN expressed deep concern over deteriorating relations between the two South Asian neighbours, with Mr. Guterres telling journalists that tensions were higher than they had been in years, and reiterating calls for maximum restraint.

There were reports of jubilation in both India and Pakistan at news of the ceasefire, which is believed to be the result of talks mediated by the US, and was announced by representatives of all three countries on social media platforms.

However, there have since been reports of skirmishes, including drone attacks.

The Secretary-General welcomed the ceasefire agreement as a positive step toward ending current hostilities and easing tensions, and said that he hopes the agreement will “contribute to lasting peace and foster an environment conducive to addressing broader, longstanding issues between the two countries.”

U.S. and China Clash Over Caribbean Influence During Rubio’s Regional Security Talks

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met last week with the heads of government from the Eastern Caribbean and The Bahamas to emphasize the urgent need for enhanced regional cooperation in the fight against drug and firearms trafficking and illegal migration — all key drivers of violence and instability across the region.

In a statement released by State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce, Rubio called on Caribbean partners to strengthen intelligence-sharing, security collaboration, and border protection through mechanisms such as the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative.

“Secretary Rubio urged our partners to make responsible, transparent decisions when selecting vendors and contractors for critical infrastructure projects, ensuring they are not vulnerable to privacy and

security risks and exploitation by malign actors like the Chinese Communist Party,” Bruce said. “He also reaffirmed our commitment to holding accountable Cuban regime officials, foreign government officials, and those involved in facilitating the regime’s forced labor scheme, including Cuba’s medical missions.”

With the Atlantic hurricane season less than a month away, Rubio also announced the reactivation of two U.S.-administered programs aimed at bolstering early warning systems and delivering rapid, life-saving assistance throughout the Caribbean.

Leaders in attendance included Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit of Dominica, Prime Minister Gaston Browne of Antigua and Barbu-

da, Prime Minister Philip Davis of The Bahamas, Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre of Saint Lucia, Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell of Grenada, and Prime Minister Terrance Drew of Saint Kitts and Nevis.

China, however, responded sharply to Rubio’s remarks. In a statement from its embassy in The Bahamas, Beijing said it “firmly opposed” the Secretary’s comments, accusing him of “ideological bias and disrespect and ignorance of the basic norms in international relations.”

The Chinese embassy maintained that its engagement in the region addresses pressing development needs.

“Chinese-invested projects, whether ports or other facilities, aim to address local development needs, foster economic growth, and create employment opportunities,” the statement said.

Rejecting suggestions of geopolitical encroachment, the embassy added: “The Caribbean is not the sphere of influence for any one nation. The outdated Cold War mentality and zero-sum game thinking should be abandoned and an open and inclusive approach should be adopted toward China’s cooperation with Latin America, the Caribbean, and The Bahamas. The world is vast enough to accommodate the common development and shared progress of all nations.”

Dominica, in particular, maintains close ties with China, which has undertaken several major infrastructure projects on the island. These include the Windsor Park Sports Stadium, the Dominica-China Friendship Hospital (formerly the Princess Margaret Hospital), a new Dominica Grammar School, and the rehabilitation

of both the Dominica State College and the EO LeBlanc Highway. China has also sponsored the construction and refurbishment of several schools and other facilities island-wide, and recently announced the construction of a Chinese goods distribution center in Dominica.

Speaking after the meeting, Prime Minister Skerrit reaffirmed the strength and transparency of Dominica’s relationship with Beijing.

“What China is doing for Dominica is open for everybody to see, whether it’s the construction of schools or the hospital or the roads or support to farmers and small businesses or housing…” he stated. “China will continue to be a very strong and steadfast friend of Dominica. I don’t think our relationship with any country should be based on any other country’s relationship with that country.”

Meanwhile, China’s President Xi Jinping announced nearly US$0 billion in credit lines — denominated in yuan — to Latin American and Caribbean countries. This commitment, made during the ChinaCELAC Forum in Beijing, aims to support development while promoting the internationalization of the Chinese currency.

This marks a continuation of China’s growing economic engagement in the region. At the inaugural China-CELAC Forum on May 12, Beijing offered US$20 billion in credit to finance infrastructure investments by Chinese enterprises across Latin America and the Caribbean.

Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic Announce US$2 Million Tourism Alliance The Governor of Puerto Rico Jenniffer Gonzalez and Tourism Minister David Collado announced last week the signing of a collaborative agreement, backed by a US$2 million investment, to jointly promote tourism in both island destinations. As reported in El Nuevo Dia of Puerto Rico, the idea for the partnership originated when Gonzalez and Collado met at this year’s International Tourism Fair (FITUR) in Madrid, Spain.

The initiative, branded “The Caribbean is Us,” aims to create multi-destination travel packages and campaigns, targeting markets in the United States and Europe. The joint promotion is set to launch in May 2025 with support from airlines such as Frontier and newcomer Arajet, the Santo Domingo and Punta Cana-based low-cost airline. JetBlue, American, Delta, Copa and Sky High also fly to Puerto Rico from the Dominican Republic.

As reported in El Nuevo Dia, Governor González stated: “This agreement reaffirms our commitment to sustainable economic development, the strengthening of our tourism industry and the well-being of our communities. We are betting on a model of collaboration that positions Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic as complementary destinations and strategic allies in the region.”

The partnership seeks to encourage tourists to explore both islands, capitalizing on their close proximity and complementary attractions. Each country will contribute US$1 million to fund joint promotional activities, including travel packages, events, and festivals.

Minister Collado emphasized the significance of the agreement, noting that tourism is a key economic driver for the Dominican Republic, contributing significantly to

its GDP. Collado explained that last year 255,000 Puerto Ricans visited the Dominican Republic. The number is expected to reach 300,000 in 2025.

For Puerto Rico, the initiative is a way for that country to piggyback on the Dominican Republic’s booming tourism and superb international air connections. The goal is to

promote multi-destination tourism, allowing tourist to begin their trip in one location, and conclude it in the other. The close distance and the new competition of Arajet that is driving the market to offer more attractive fares, make this goal attainable. The flight between both countries takes less than an hour.

T&T - Should Repatriate Citizens from Syria and Iraq, say Humanitarian Groups The United States (US) based Human Rights Watch (HRW) is calling on the newly elected Trinidad and Tobago government to take immediate steps to repatriate more than 90 of its nationals, including over 50 children, who remain detained in war-torn camps and prisons in northeast Syria and Iraq.

“We urge you to act as quickly as possible to bring home all detained Trinidad and Tobago nationals for rehabilitation and reintegration, prioritizing the returns of the most vulnerable, including children,” HRW Children’s Rights Advocacy Director Jo Becker wrote in a letter to Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar.

Becker said any adults in Syria and Iraq linked to serious crimes can be prosecuted under Trinidad and Tobago laws.

“Your swift action can close this troubled chapter for Trinidad and Tobago and allow these individuals to be reunified with their families and rebuild their lives,” Becker said.

In 2024, the international non-governmental organization that conducts research and advocacy on human rights said the Trinidad and Tobago government should heed the renewed call by the United Nations’ (UN) top counterterrorism expert to bring home all its nationals detained in northeast Syria for alleged association with the Islamic state.

HRW said then that the UN made the expert’s findings public on December 18, 2023, after the expert, Fionnuala Ní Aoláin, visited locked camps and other detention centers in northeast Syria where US-backed, regional forces are holding an estimated 90 Trinidadians, including at least 21 women and 56 children.

The Trinidadians are among more than 55,000 Syrians and foreigners from dozens of countries, most of them children, detained in camps and prisons for alleged ISIS ties. Most have been detained since at least 2019.

None of the detained Trinidadians have been charged with a crime or had access to a judge to challenge their detention. Most are children who were born in the detention camps or taken

to Syria by their parents and never chose to live under ISIS. In December last year, the former speaker of the House of Assembly, Nizam Mohammed, who chaired an advisory committee on repatriation created in March 2023, said the panel has not received resources or even responses from the government to its repatriation proposals.

Becker said HRW documented life-threatening conditions at the camps and detention facilities, including inadequate healthcare, clean water and education. She said that interviews with detained nationals revealed harrowing experiences, such as children hiding from sexual predators and youth being misled into travelling to Syria under false pretenses.

Becker said despite repeated calls from local advocates, no concrete action has been taken, Becker said.

“The inaction of the previous Trinidad and Tobago government has allowed its nationals to endure life-threatening conditions for more than six years.

“We had hoped that former prime minister (Dr Keith) Rowley’s March 2023 appointment of a three-member team…to facilitate the repatriation of Trinidad and Tobago’s nationals from northeast Syria and Iraq, would have resulted in concrete action,” she wrote, adding “As you well know, however, that is not the case, leaving Trinidad and Tobago nationals to endure even more suffering.”

Becker said at least 39 other countries have repatriated more than 12,000 of their nationals from Syria, and a 2022 HRW study on the reintegration of returned children in Europe and Asia found that many of them were adjusting well.

Last month, two children, born to Trinidadian parents, were returned to Trinidad and Tobago to be placed with their grandparents under the protection of a valid guardianship order issued by the High Court of England and Wales.

Haiti - Kenya and DR Strengthen Collaboration to Combat Gang Violence SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic — On May 12, 2025, Kenya and the Dominican Republic convened in Santo Domingo to reinforce their joint commitment to the United Nations-backed Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission in Haiti. This initiative aims to address the escalating gang violence that has destabilized the nation.

Appeal for Enhanced International Support Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary, Musalia Mudavadi, and Dominican Foreign Minister, Roberto Álvarez, jointly appealed to the international community to fulfill and augment their pledged financial and logistical support for the MSS mission. The ministers emphasized that the mission’s limited effectiveness is due to a shortfall in funding and materials, urging the global community to act swiftly to support the mission’s full deployment and enhance its capacity to restore stability in Haiti.

Formalizing Medical Support Agreements During the meeting, Kenya and the Dominican Republic signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to formalize medical evacuation and repatriation aid for Kenyan police officers participating in the MSS mission. This agreement ensures that Kenyan personnel injured in combat will receive priority access to medical attention in the Dominican Republic, with provisions for repatriation when necessary.

Current State of the MSS Mission The MSS mission, authorized by the UN Security Council in October 2023, has deployed approximately 1,000 personnel, with about 75% being Kenyan officers.

Despite these efforts, heavily armed gangs have expanded their control across Haiti, resulting in over 1,600 deaths and more than 1 million displaced people in the first three months of 2025 alone.

Broader Regional Implications The ongoing instability in Haiti has led

to significant regional challenges. The Dominican Republic has been supporting Kenya with intelligence and medical assistance to soldiers wounded in Haiti.

The collaboration between Kenya and the Dominican Republic underscores the

necessity for a coordinated international response to Haiti’s security crisis. Their joint efforts aim to stabilize the region and address the humanitarian challenges posed by the pervasive gang violence.

International Forensic Experts Offer to Assist in Investigation of Younge’s Mysterious Death

Georgetown, Guyana — The investigation into the tragic and suspicious death of 11-year-old Adriana Younge has drawn international attention, with at least 45 forensic experts from around the world expressing interest in reviewing the case, according to the Younge family’s new attorney, Dr. Dexter Todd.

In an interview on Tuesday, Dr. Todd confirmed that he will be meeting with the Commissioner of Police Clifton Hicken and Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum to seek clarity on the investigation and formally request a copy of the preliminary autopsy report.

“The public is demanding answers. The international community is demanding answers,” Dr. Todd stated. “There is no shortage of experts willing to assist with

this case.”

Dr. Todd reported overwhelming interest from international forensic specialists, including pathologists and psychological experts.

“There have been countless professional organizations and expert bodies who have reached out from across the globe,” he explained. “As of today, the number of international professors willing to review the case file has reached 45. We will not be lacking in expertise.”

He added that some have volunteered to travel to Guyana at their own expense to support the investigation. “Even in the realm of forensic psychology, experts are offering to work with the family and affected individuals. We are pushing for a holistic and transparent approach,” he said.

Adriana Younge went missing on April 23, while on a family outing at the Double Day International Hotel and Bar in Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo. Despite searches conducted shortly after her disappearance, her body was later discovered in the hotel’s swimming pool under mysterious circumstances.

A post-mortem examination concluded that she died from drowning, but her family remains unconvinced and suspects foul play.

Dr. Todd, who recently replaced attorney Darren Wade as lead counsel for the family, has been vocal in criticizing the lack of transparency from the Guyanese authorities.

“The Commissioner of Police and the Crime Chief have not held a press conference or updated the public,” he remarked.

“There are too many unanswered questions, and this silence allows misinformation to spread.”

He said he intends to directly question law enforcement about the composition of the investigative team, forensic protocols employed, and any physical evidence collected from the scene.

“Was there a forensic team present? Were any samples taken before the area was compromised by fire? These are basic but critical questions,” Dr. Todd emphasized.

“If the police do not have the necessary capabilities, they must reach out to those who do.”

Dr. Todd also raised concerns about whether proper procedures were followed in the handling of the case.

“We’re not sure what has been done so far.

Much of what we know is speculative. The family deserves clarity,” he said. “I am not accusing the police of inaction, but they must step forward and explain their process. By law, the Commissioner of Police and the Crime Chief are accountable for this investigation.”

Although the family previously considered a second autopsy by renowned Trinidadian pathologist Dr. Hubert Daisley, they ultimately deferred the decision. However, Dr. Todd stated the possibility remains open.

“There is a lot of discomfort surrounding the initial autopsy,” he said. “We are reviewing those findings, and if a second autopsy is recommended, we will formally put that request forward.”

Dr. Todd confirmed that his full assessment of the case will be completed by Thursday, after which further legal and investigative steps will be determined.

The death of Adriana Younge has shaken both local and international communities, with many calling for justice and a thorough, impartial investigation.

“This is not just about Adriana,” Dr. Todd concluded. “It’s about ensuring that every child in Guyana is protected by a justice system that is competent, transparent, and accountable.”

T&T – Urged to Protect LGBT Persons’ Rights by the UN

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) is expressing concern over the recent decision of the Court of Appeal in Trinidad and Tobago reinstating legal provisions that criminalize consensual sexual relations between adults of the same sex.

The IACHR said that this measure had been previously repealed by a first-instance Court decision in 2018.

“The IACHR reiterates that such laws are incompatible with international human rights standards—particularly the rights to privacy, equality, and non-discrimination—and have a profoundly discriminatory impact on the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex (LGBTI) and gender diverse persons,” said the IACHR, which is a principal, autonomous body of the Organization of American States (OAS).

On March 25, the Court of Appeal overturned the 2018 ruling by the High Court in the case of Jones V Trinidad and Tobago, which had declared Sections 13 and 16 of the Sexual Of-

fences Act unconstitutional, illegal, null, void, and of no effect insofar as they criminalized consensual sexual conduct between adults.

The IACHR said that it has welcomed the earlier decision as a step towards equality and non-discrimination.

“With the recent appeal ruling, the offences of buggery and gross indecency remain in effect.

Buggery is now punishable by up to five years’ imprisonment, and gross indecency by up to two years’ imprisonment.”

The IACHR said that laws criminalizing consensual same-sex intimacy between adults are incompatible with the principles of equality and non-discrimination under international human rights law.

“The criminalization of conduct intrinsically linked to rights recognized by international standards constitutes a violation of the principle of legality. Furthermore, laws targeting private, consensual same-sex relations violate the rights to privacy and non-discrimination, regardless of whether they are enforced or whether a person has been subjected to investigation, trial, or sanction.

“The commission further notes that even when laws that criminalize same-sex intimacy are not generally applied, their mere existence contributes to a climate of discrimination that promotes stigma and prejudice against LGBTI persons. Maintaining such laws, even if unenforced, legitimizes prejudice, fuels discrimination and violence, and impedes access to other human rights.”

The IACHR said it is calling upon all branches of the state “to act within their competencies to protect the rights of LGBTI persons and promote cultural shifts towards democracies respectful of human rights and diversity.

“The commission reiterates its willingness to cooperate with the State and civil society to achieve these ends,” it added. (CMC)

MLK Jr. Bust Relocated from Oval Office to Dining Room Under Trump Administration Washington, D.C. — The iconic bronze bust of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., which has occupied a prominent place in the White House since the late 1990s, has been relocated from the Oval Office to a nearby private dining room under President Donald Trump’s administration.

According to a senior White House official, the bust, which had long served as a visible symbol of civil rights progress within the nation’s most powerful office, now sits just off the Oval Office in the president’s private dining room. The official did not provide photographic confirmation of the bust’s current placement, citing a longstanding policy against photographing the White House’s private areas, including the West Wing and residential quarters.

The bust of Dr. King was first introduced to the White House during President Bill Clinton’s second term, on long-term loan from the Smithsonian Institution. Sculpted in 1970 by renowned African American artist Charles Alston, the piece was created

two years after Dr. King’s assassination and holds the distinction of being the first public display of an African American figure within the White House.

Throughout the administrations of Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden, the artwork was prominently positioned beside the fireplace in the Oval Office, often visible in official photographs and footage of meetings with global leaders and dignitaries. Its placement was widely seen as a tribute to Dr. King’s enduring legacy of justice, equality, and nonviolent resistance.

The decision to relocate the bust during President Trump’s tenure drew public attention, with some observers questioning whether the move diminished the symbolic value of Dr. King’s presence in the executive workspace. However, the White House has emphasized that the bust remains on display within the West Wing, albeit in a more private setting.

The relocation also reflects the dynamic

nature of the White House’s art curation.

As both the residence and workplace of the President of the United States, the White House serves as a living museum, with a collection of artwork and historical artifacts that are often rearranged by each incoming administration to reflect its preferences and priorities.

While the King bust has appeared in various locations throughout the White House, including the library on the lower floor and the Oval Office, it has never been placed on the State Floor. This is consistent with White House tradition, which typically reserves the State Floor for figures with military or official governmental titles. Dr. King, though a civilian, remains one of the most impactful figures in American history, and his representation in the White House continues to carry deep cultural and historical significance.

Grenada - Plans to Repeal the Death Penalty

ST GEORGE’S, Grenada (CMC) – The Government of Grenada is planning to remove the death penalty as a punishment for a criminal offence but before a final decision is made the public will give suggestions and recommendations as part of a consultative process.

This was disclosed by Rae Thomas, Crown Counsel, Office of the Attorney General, Ministry of Legal Affairs, Labour and Consumer Affairs when she gave remarks during Grenada’s Universal Period Review (UPR) which took place in Geneva earlier this week.

Grenada is one of 14 States being reviewed by the UPR Working Group during its session that ends on Friday.

In response to recommendations from

various UN members including Italy and Mozambique that Grenada intends to repeal the death penalty as a punishment, without providing a timeline, Thomas told the UPR Working Group that the removal is Government’s intention.

“Government intends to initiate public consultation on the potential abolition of the death penalty. Grenada remains open to receiving international support and technical assistance to help facility this important conversation,” she told the group.

According to Thomas, the last hanging occurred in Grenada in 1978 and there has been no State hanging since that time. She further informed the group that the Privy Council has ruled the death penalty in Grenada as constitutional and as a result there has been a moratorium since 1978.

Currently, Grenada is not a signatory to the Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which aims to abolish the death penalty.

Entered into force on 11 July, 1991, this protocol says that the States Parties signing and ratifying the protocol believes that abolition of the death penalty contributes to enhancement of human dignity and progressive development of human rights and that all measures of abolition of the death penalty should be considered as progress in the enjoyment of the right to life.

Mental Health and the Black Community: Confronting Historical Trauma and Breaking Barriers

Mental health remains a critical issue across all communities, but for Black Americans, the challenges are often compounded by historical trauma, racism, and ongoing societal inequities. These layers of adversity not only exacerbate mental health struggles but also create significant barriers to accessing effective care. In communities like Harlem, the weight of this reality is palpable—economic hardship, microaggressions, police brutality, and stigma surrounding mental health continue to cast long shadows over lives already burdened by systemic injustice.

For generations, Black communities have been disproportionately exposed to stressors that can trigger or worsen mental health conditions. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), Black Americans are 20% more likely to experience serious psychological distress than their white counterparts.

These disparities are not incidental; they are rooted in a legacy of oppression and sustained by present-day inequities. From the lingering scars of slavery and segregation to the pervasive effects of redlining and economic disenfranchisement, Black Americans have had to endure a relentless cycle of adversity.

One of the major contributing factors to mental health struggles in Black communities is economic hardship. Americans, a disparity that has remained unchanged for decades. This economic strain is not just a matter of income but a source of chronic stress that infiltrates family dynamics, community stability, and individual well-being. When families are struggling to meet basic needs, mental health care often falls to the wayside, seen as a luxury rather than a necessity.

Moreover, police brutality and community violence remain grim realities. Highprofile cases of police violence serve as grim reminders of the vulnerability Black individuals face, often leading to community-wide grief and trauma. The psychological impact of these events reverberates, triggering symptoms of anxiety, depression, and PTSD—not just for the individuals directly affected, but for entire communities. This collective trauma is further compounded by the lack of culturally competent mental health services.

Stigma surrounding mental health within the Black community also serves as a significant barrier to treatment. Cultural narratives that promote resilience and self-reliance, while empowering in many respects, can also discourage individuals from seeking help. Mental health struggles are too often internalized or dismissed as weaknesses. This stigma, coupled with a profound distrust of the medical system—a distrust rooted in historical abuses like the Tuskegee Syphilis Study—prevents many from reaching out for the help they need.

Cutting Energy Star Hurts Americans –And Helps No One But Polluters

“Look for the Energy Star.” Most Americans know that is excellent advice to anyone appliance shopping. That little blue label saves American consumers roughly $40 billion a year in energy costs every year.

With the program’s modest price tag – less than one percent of the EPA’s total spending – Americans save a whopping $1,250 for every single dollar spent on Energy Star. And Americans know that little blue symbol means less wasted energy and cleaner air. It helps families stretch their paychecks and do right by the planet at the same time.

Since the Energy Star public-private partnership began in 1992, it has helped save American households and businesses more than $500 billion on energy costs.

It has more than 4 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions (roughly the equivalent of annual pollution from 933 million cars). And it has done so while empowering consumers with better information – not by taking anything away.

What that looks like at the local level is homes and businesses in a large city like Chicago saving $116.6 million a year in energy costs, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 539,500 metric tons.

Now, Donald Trump wants to get rid of it. Virtually no one thinks that would be wise.

In March, a large group of manufacturers and industry associations joined a letter calling on Environmental Protections Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin to keep the popular EPA program. The US Chamber of Commerce, the Association

of Home Appliance Manufacturers, and others said, “eliminating [Energy Star] will not serve the American people,” and they pointed out that because of consumers’ high awareness of the program – to the tune of 90% brand awareness – the results if it is eliminated would be “decreased features, functionality, performance, or increased costs” of appliances.

Energy Star certified homes typically save around $450 per year on energy bills. In 2020 alone, the program’s emissions reductions amounted to more than five percent of total US greenhouse gas emissions. That year, the program’s energy savings also improved health outcomes for communities by preventing 210,000 tons each of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide pollutants, and 20,000 tons of fine particulate matter (PM2.5). The public health benefits from those reductions in air pollution were estimated to be as high as $17 billion!

Further, the estimated annual market value of Energy Star product sales is more than $100 billion. And of domestic energy efficiency jobs, about 35% are in the manufacturing and installation of Energy Star products. As of 2020, that was more than 790,000 American jobs.

In his latest attack on common sense, Trump is trying to eliminate one of the federal government’s most successful, least controversial, and most popular consumer protection tools.

Ending Energy Star is not a serious policy move. It is performative politics at its worst. It is “virtue signaling” to fossil fuel extremists from a man desperate to please

his donors while punishing regular people for choosing clean, affordable options.

Targeting the program as part of some sort of ideological deregulation agenda doesn’t even make sense because it is not a regulation. It does not force anybody to buy or produce anything. It is simply a voluntary, science-based labeling system.

It helps consumers compare appliances and other products based on their energy efficiency. It helps Americans cut down their energy bills. And it helps reduce pollution that hurts our lungs and heats our planet.

That is why Americans across the political spectrum support it. It is an example of our government doing something simple, effective, and bipartisan. At least, it used to be.

Donald Trump’s push to dismantle this program is a perfect example of how MAGA hardliners have turned their backs on the very people they claim to represent. This is not about freedom or choice.

It is about controlling the market to benefit fossil fuel interests. It is about keeping consumers in the dark. And it is about making sure families have fewer tools to protect themselves from rising costs.

Ask yourself: why, in the middle of what Trump and his allies keep calling an “energy emergency,” would you go out of your way to kill a program that helps people save so much money energy? The only people who benefit are the fossil fuel executives who profit when homes and appliances waste more of it.

When people waste energy because they unknowingly buy inefficient products, the

fossil fuel industry makes more money.

That is the whole ballgame. It is a rigged system that leaves working Americans with higher bills while big polluters cash in. The Energy Star label helps consumers break that cycle.

Cutting Energy Star would be a betrayal of the millions of Americans who are already struggling to afford groceries, gas, and electricity. It would hurt seniors trying to stay warm in winter. It would hurt young families buying their first refrigerator. It would hurt renters in cities and homeowners in rural towns alike. No one benefits – except the lobbyists and the oil barons.

Energy Star gives every American the chance to choose better, smarter options.

Scrapping it to score cheap points with the same special interests that are holding our country back defies common sense.

Americans deserve leaders who will fight to keep our bills low, our homes efficient, and our future sustainable.

One in eight public school students experienced homelessness last year. Meanwhile, countless units sit empty — available only to the ultra-rich.

I’ve lived this reality. As the son of Jamaican immigrants raised in The Bronx, I’ve seen families priced out of their neighborhoods. I’ve watched as neighbors sacrificed food and childcare just to keep a roof over their heads.

We don’t have to accept this. I’m the only

Black Newark Mayor Arrested by ICE

Social media is still abuzz after the optics of Newark Mayor Ras Baraka’s arrest at the Delaney Hall immigration facility in Newark, New Jersey, on Friday.

Rachel Noerdlinger, communications strategist for the Ras Baraka gubernatorial campaign, posted on Instagram, “One way or another, we’re going to get democracy back.”

On Instagram, many people have shared how appealing and “infuriating” it was to

watch the viral moment of congressional leaders locking arms and holding down the mayor of Newark, New Jersey. The attempts to stave off an arrest were unsuccessful.

New Jersey congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman said she and the congressional leaders working to protect the mayor from arrest were “roughed up.” They were there to view the new facility.

According to reports in The New York Times, congressional leaders were differentiated from the mayor. “Congressmen

are different, congresswomen are different,” a Homeland Security Investigations agent told the mayor. We also hear the agent sternly add, “That is the last warning.” You will be placed under arrest.”

Mr. Baraka was forcefully taken into ICE custody and charged with trespassing.

He was transported and held at another Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Newark for five hours before his release.

Greg Meeks, New York representative and ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said, “He is the Mayor of Newark doing his job along with members of Congress. The rest of the democratic world is wondering what has happened to the United States.”

Democrats inside and outside the state of New Jersey believe this focus on Mayor Baraka’s arrest has raised attention to ICE behavior. “A Black mayor is standing in full solidarity with South American migrants who have rights not just in this country but as human beings,” added Noerdlinger.

Yesterday’s viral moment also raised attention to Ras Baraka and his political

prowess, including his run for governor of New Jersey. Noerdlinger emphasizes, “Ras Baraka became the face of the opposition to Donald Trump’s inhumane policies the second federal law enforcement slapped those handcuffs on his wrists.” (Black Press: US)

AG James Wins Court Order Restoring Critical Education Funds to States NEW YORK – New York Attorney General Letitia James today secured a court order forcing the Trump administration to restore states’ access to critical Department of Education (ED) programs that support low-income and unhoused students and provide funding for other services to address the long-term effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on K-12 students.

On April 10, Attorney General James led a coalition of 15 other attorneys general and the Governor of Pennsylvania in suing the Trump administration for unilaterally ending access to over $1 billion in grants from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), which ED had previously determined the states could access through March 2026. New York alone lost access to $134 million in funds due to ED’s decision.

The preliminary injunction issued today

by Judge Edgardo Ramos of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York orders ED to immediately restore states’ access to these critical funds as the case continues.

“The Trump administration’s illegal decision to cut off essential education funding put some of our most vulnerable students at risk of falling behind in school,” said Attorney General James. “This is a major win for our students and teachers who are counting on this funding to help them succeed. I will continue to defend New York’s schools and ensure they get the

resources they need to provide a quality education to everyone.”

To combat the long-term effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, ARPA funded three education-related programs to help support states’ school systems and direct more resources to the most vulnerable

students. These three programs – Homeless Children and Youth (HCY), Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER), and Emergency Assistance to Nonpublic Schools (EANS) – provide essential resources to help schools and students recover from the lasting impacts

of the pandemic. In New York, EANS and ESSER funds support critical repairs and improvements to school buildings like the construction of additional classroom space, the purchase of additional library books and playground equipment, and the addition of wheelchair-accessible buses.

Attorney General James and the coalition asserted that ED’s arbitrary and abrupt termination of the states’ access to these funds is causing a massive, unexpected budget gap that will hurt students and teachers by cutting off vital education services.

Judge Ramos today granted the states’ motion for a preliminary injunction barring ED from blocking states’ access to ARPA funding. The preliminary injunction order issued today prevents ED from enforcing a March 28, 2025 letter from Education Secretary Linda McMahon rescinding states’ ability to access their awarded ARPA funding.

Harlem, NY – Rep. Espaillat Addresses Pertinent Issues at GHCC Luncheon

A Town Hall luncheon meeting at Silvia’s, in Harlem on Saturday, May 10, was sponsored by the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce, featuring a report by Rep. Adriano Espaillat, who had just returned from Mexico. As Lloyd Williams, president and CEO of the GHCC, told an assembly of city notables, the luncheon was the first in a series of meetings planned this year, including The State of Congress; State of State; and State of the City. If the succeeding sessions are anything like its inaugural, a storehouse of important information will be dispensed.

Even before Rep. Espaillat began his nearly 90-minute-long speech, Williams explained that Rucker Park had joined the Morris-Jamel Mansion, Hamilton Grange, and the U.S Grant Memorial as historic sites. “Along with the congressman’s office,” he said, “we’ve reached out to the NBA because hundreds of the

NBA players have performed in the Rucker tournament over the years.” At the table of dignitaries was former basketball great Bob McCullough, commissioner of Rucker Park and the Rucker Pro League for over 60 years. Seated nearby was Karl Rodney, publisher of the Carib News.

After thanking Williams for his introduction, Espaillat began his discussion by noting the condition of two undocumented parents and their four U.S. born children who had been deported to Mexico. “One of the children has brain cancer, and she needs daily and weekly treatment. Her older teenage brother has a heart condition. So, if you think for a moment that the mass deportation plan is about a hardened criminal that committed a crime and probably should be deported back to where they came from, well, that’s not what all this is about at all. This is about any of us.”

The representative also commented on the arrest of Mayor Ras Baraka and three members of Congress, “will show you that this goes beyond…the expected response of somebody who may have broken the law,” he added. As for constitutional matters, he observed that “Dissent is patriotic; it’s the hardcore… the spinal cord of democracy. If you don’t have the ability to dissent, to have a different opinion than someone else, then democracy crumbles.”

He said, “What the Mayor of Newark and the members of Congress were doing yesterday was saying, you need to get permits and you need to get everything right before you open up a detention center in Jersey that will house over a thousand people.

So that will be the processing center for the northeast massive deportation plan.”

third is the public. “I represent 780,000 people, and 500,000 of them are Medicaid recipients. 18,000 are Medicare recipients. So 618,000 plus maybe another ten, fifteen out of 780,000 people I represent are either on Medicaid or Medicare,” he said. “And you know why? Because the cost of healthcare is so expensive that you can’t get a Cadillac plan because it’s just going to hurt you in your pocket. It’s going to be $22,500, to 18 hundred dollars a month. You just can’t make it happen.”

Espaillat devoted considerable time to the accomplishments of his predecessor, former Congressman Charles Rangel, and the creation of the Rangel Center at City College, which must have pleased Vincent Boudreau, the school’s president, who was in attendance. “There is an agreement now made between the Rangel Center and the labor unions who traditionally have not always been on the same page with our communities…where they are now going to be one of the training centers for the apprenticeships.”

There was a barrage of questions about the importance of Harlem as a transportation hub, artificial intelligence, education, arts and culture, as well as the future of the Hispanic Caucus that he helms in Congress. He indicated that the various caucuses had been betrayed by Democrats “at the last vote in the budget,” that one of those in attendance had indicated.

Questions were still lingering as he took his leave and he answered only one more from a reporter who asked his opinion of the new Pope. “I think he’s for the poor, the hungry and he’s going to be following in the footsteps of Pope Francis and Leo the Thirteenth and maybe as long ago as Leo the first.” This first Leo defied Attila the Hun, and let’s see if Leo XIV will be a significant counterweight to Trump and take a similar stand against a menace.

Corruption is Jamaica’s Main Threat, Warns Opposition Spokesman Kingston, Jamaica — Opposition Spokesman on Investment, Trade and Global Logistics, Hon. Anthony Hylton, has issued a stern warning that Jamaica is standing at a critical juncture in its national development, and corruption remains the single greatest threat to the country’s progress.

This surge in deportations follows a firm campaign pledge by President Luis Abinader, who was re-elected in May 2024 for a second term. One of his central promises was to intensify efforts to

Guyana - Canadian Expert Joins Probe Into Adriana Younge’s Death GEORGETOWN – The Ministry of Home Affairs has announced the appointment of a Canadian investigator to assist with the ongoing probe into the death of 11-yearold Adriana Younge.

The move is in line with a commitment made by President Dr Irfaan Ali to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation.

In a statement released Thursday morning, the Ministry confirmed that Leonard Mc Coshen, a retired officer of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), has been engaged by the Government of Guyana.

Mc Coshen is a trained and certified expert in homicide and suspicious death investigations.

With over three decades of experience, Mc Coshen has dedicated 20 years of his career to the RCMP’s Serious Crimes Branch within the Major Crimes Unit.

During this time, he was responsible for investigating complex and sensitive cases, primarily focusing on homicides and incidents where foul play was suspected.

Throughout his career, Mc Coshen has successfully supervised and coordinated more than 200 investigations, including cases involving murder, kidnapping, and other serious offences.

The Ministry says his extensive experience and credentials are expected to significantly contribute to solving this crime.

Breaking the Silence: How Rev. Michael A. Walrond Jr., is Revolutionizing Mental Wellness in the Black Church

While mental health struggles touch every community, Black and Brown Americans face unique barriers—from stigma to systemic lack of resources. Consider this: According to the American Psychiatric Association, only 1 in 3 Black Americans who need mental health care actually receive it. And a 2022 CDC report found that Black adults are 20% more likely to report serious psychological distress than white adults—yet they’re far less likely to seek treatment.

The reasons are complex: cultural stigma, lack of access to affordable care, and a shortage of culturally competent providers. In fact, the American Psychological Association reports that while Black people make up 14% of the U.S. population, only 4% of psychologists are Black.

This gap leaves too many suffering in silence—especially in faith communities, where mental health is often overlooked or misunderstood.

But in Harlem at First Corinthian Baptist Church and The Hope Center, that’s changing. Under Senior Pastor Michael A. Walrond Jr.’s leadership, this church has become a sanctuary for holistic healing— where faith and mental health care intersect. And Dr. Lena Green’s work as Executive Director of the The Hope Center is breaking down barriers, providing free and low-cost counseling, support groups, and even training for faith leaders to address mental health crises.

Last week, Carib News had the distinguished honor to speak with them both about the critical issue of mental wellness facing our communities.

When Rev. Waldron first recognized he might be battling depression in 2011, his moment of awakening came through a traumatic experience. “On a trip, I had a suicidal thought that shook me to my core,” he recalls. “That’s when I knew I

needed professional help.” Without hesitation, he reached out to a colleague who connected him with a therapist - the same therapist he still sees today.

What makes Rev. Waldron’s story remarkable isn’t just his personal breakthrough, but how he transformed his experience into a ministry. “I felt no shame about my mental health struggles,” he explains, acknowledging that many in his congregation initially hesitated to speak openly about such issues due to stigma.

After experiencing profound healing through therapy, Rev. Waldron began addressing mental health from the pulpit.

“My goal was simple - if I could help just one person feel safe enough to seek help, it would be worth it.” His candid sermons sparked a cultural shift within the First Corinthian Baptist Church, leading to an expansion in programming that included mental wellness seminars and eventually the creation of The Hope Center.

Now located on 116th Street in Harlem, The Hope Center represents a revolutionary approach to faith-based mental healthcare. Under Dr. Green’s leadership, the center provides free, evidence-based services including individual therapy, group sessions, grief counseling, and medication management through partnerships with Mount Sinai Hospital.

“Many churches admire our work,” Dr. Green notes, “but it requires real commitment - not just talk, but financial investment and trust that people will come.” The Center’s services are fully underwritten by FCBC’s budget, removing financial barriers to care.

She also shared that partnerships have been the anchor of the work at the Center, which is evidence of the intentionality behind this initiative.

Rev. Waldron has been particularly intentional about challenging toxic masculinity

in the Black community.

“Men suffer in silence for fear of being ostracized, for showing emotion or being vulnerable, but it is about unlearning those parts that are detrimental, and reimagining what it means to be human.”

“To be human is to show emotion, to shed a tear, to be transparent.” It doesn’t undermine who the man is, it actually reinforces who he is.”

Through his advocacy, Rev. Waldron has

created a blueprint for how faith institutions can bridge the gap between spiritual healing and mental healthcare.

“Churches have a critical role in normalizing these conversations,” he emphasizes.

“True ministry means caring for the whole person - mind, body and spirit.”

Jamaica - Visitors Should Increase as Crime Continues to Decrease

Minister of Tourism, Hon. Edmund Bartlett, says Jamaica’s tourism sector could see visitor arrivals double or even triple, provided the ongoing downward trend in crime continues.

His remarks come in response to Prime Minister, Dr. the Most Hon. Andrew Holness’ recent comment that crime remains the primary barrier preventing Jamaica from reaching 10 to 15 million visitors annually.

Delivering the keynote address at the St. James East Central Scholarship Program Fundraiser at the Iberostar Hotel in St. James, on May 3, Dr. Holness highlighted the critical importance of addressing crime to unlock Jamaica’s full tourism potential.

Minister Bartlett, who is also a Member of Parliament for the constituency, said the Prime Minister is absolutely correct. “If we keep weeding out the bad apples and maintaining our focus on safety and

security, we could see visitor numbers soar beyond what we have ever imagined. The vibes are right; people around the world are telling us they want to come to Jamaica,” he added.

Mr. Bartlett emphasized that the current decline in crime has significantly enhanced Jamaica’s image as a safe and welcoming destination.

“What we’re witnessing now in terms of crime reduction is not just good news for the tourism industry but also for our local communities,” the Minister said. “A safer Jamaica means a better quality of life for our citizens and a more attractive destination for travelers,” he added.

The Minister pointed to recent statistics indicating a steady decrease in violent crimes and other criminal activities across the island.

“Our crime rate has been trending downward, and this positive trajectory is reflected in the increasing number of visitor arrivals and revenue generated from tourism. This is a testament to the effectiveness of our ongoing security initiatives and community engagement programs,” he said.

Among them, Lionel Nichols, a self-taught tailor from Flatbush, Brooklyn, quietly stood out as the creative force behind some of the night’s most talked-about fashion moments.

From crafting Diana Ross’s ethereal 18-foot train to tailoring Jeremy O’Harris’s bold statement ensemble, Nichols’s work represented more than just exquisite design—it embodied the powerful intersection of Black craftsmanship, identity, and storytelling.

Nichols’s journey began far from the glamour

of the Met Gala. A self-taught designer, he honed his skills in his bedroom in Flatbush, Brooklyn, fueled by determination and a deep love for the art of garment construction.

The Jamaican hasn’t competed since July 2024, being forced to withdraw from last year’s Paris 2024 Olympic Games due to a nagging injury she picked up in training ahead of the Games.

But on Saturday evening at the Diamond League meet in Xiamen, People’s Republic of China, the 30-year-old took her first steps in global competition in nine months, clocking 22.79 seconds from lane 6 in the women’s 200m at the Egret Stadium.

Jackson started well, keeping up with early leader Mujinga Kambundji on her inside around the bend. Her Swiss opponent faded, but on Jackson’s outside, U.S. sprinter Anavia Battle kicked as the pack hit the finishing straight,

pulling away from 80m to go.

The Jamaican recognised she would not catch Battle, who set a meeting record 22.41 seconds, but held her second position through to the finish line ahead of another U.S. athlete, Jenna Prandini.

“This is my opener,” Battle said of her win. “I was so nervous cause I had not run a 200 yet, but I am happy I did it here. Really good competition. It had a really good feel, it was great.

“That 15 hour flight [to China] hurt, but I had to suck it up and get out here and compete. Me and my coach have been working on the first half of the race for my 100 m so I feel like that has helped a lot. We are going to Shanghai next, get some rest before Shanghai, then back home.”
