Caribee has been developing travel packs for Australian travellers for over 40 years and our experience has culminated in the development of the Caribee Sky Master Series. Made from recycled polyester materials, this functional and stylish travel series lessens our need for oil, helps reduce waste in landfills and soil contamination that results in the production of less pollution compared to if we were to use virgin polyester.

Caribee’s Sky Master wheeled travel packs give you the choice to carry or wheel your luggage around the world. The 70L and 80L models are light in weight and feature a Bio-form concealable harness system, with padded hip belt and lumbar support, to make the carrying this pack a pleasure. The straight tube aluminium trolley system and oversized wheels increase your internal storage space and make zipping around the airport terminal a breeze. These travel packs also feature a stylish zip off detachable day pack that is great for carry on luggage or day trips once you reach your destination. To assist with the boring parts of travel a full length main zip opening makes packing and unpacking a clear and simple whilst a separate lower shoe compartment keeps your clothes clean. “Wheel aboard” envy Unfortunately it is a fact of life, looks do matter, especially when we are taking about carry-on luggage. Two months ago, when waiting to travel from London to Florence on an overcrowded tourist flight, I was lucky enough to be upgraded to Business class.

Poor hydration lasts for 36 hours.

Hydration is an essential part of fitness and wellbeing. Any dehydration is serious as it will take 24 to 36 hours to recover from the effects, and that’s considering that the fluids are replaced.

What is the cause of dehydration.

The body sweats to cool itself - this advanced system of external cooling allowed our ancestor to chase down sprinting animals in marathon hunting sessions. Now with so many modern distraction we don’t focus on servicing this essential feature of our body. Sweating with exercise especially in hot weather will quickly drain the body of essential hydration. Many will compound this with not drinking enough water at the right times and only drinking when thirsty.

What are the effects of dehydration Your body is 60-65% water, a 1% loss of water will begin to reduce your performance.

From 2% on the body will no longer be able to regulate heat and there will be a loss of strength and general endurance. 3% dehydration reduces muscular endurance and increases physical and mental fatigue.

At 4-6% you can suffer further reduction in muscular strength, further reduction in endurance and also heat cramps. At greater then 6% loss of water dehydration can lead to some of the following effects: Severe heat cramps, Heat exhaustion, Heatstroke, coma and death.

Watch for the signs of Heat illness: Headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, weakness, mental and physical fatigue, confusion and lack of concentration. Most of us will be familiar with some of these symptoms due to have hangovers (alcohol induced dehydration causing some of the same effects in the body.

A quick guide to how hydrated you are can be easily accomplished with urine-watching, dark urination means your body doesn’t have enough water to flush all the toxins from the kidneys. Clear urination means over hydration or alcohol has stunned kidney function. Apple juice is a quick guide for a good healthy urine/hydration colour.

When to hydrate

How to choose a hydration pack

It is essential to drink when thirsty but often too late. It will take you 24 to 36 hours to recover from dehydration ‘damage’. Thirstdrinking will only replace up to 50% of an athletes hydration needs. Even without exercise your body likes to have approximately 20 mouthfuls of water for women and children and 30 mouthfuls of water for men per day.

1. How long will I need to hydrating for:

At high altitude, in hot conditions or during exercise you will increase your need to hydrate. You should also find what rate you sweat out water. As a guide you can Weight yourself before and after exercise, this will tell you how much water you lost. If you loose 1kg in 1 hour then you’ve lost 1L of water and therefore need to drink 2 mouthfuls every 15 minutes of exercise.

A. Sprint - Under 1 hour = 1.5L bladder B. Event - Up to 2 hours = 2L bladder C. Tour - 3 hours or over = 3L bladder D. Various - Get a 3 litre, fill as needed and remove the excess air 2. Do I need cargo space: Consider hydration ready daypacks Urban environment: Fugitive, Retreat Sport: Aquatec, Recon, Patriot, Merlin, Ridge Runner Snowboarding/Skating: Pivot Hiking/Trekking: Trail, Adriatic 3. How agile do I need to be: slimline packs like Hydra, Oasis, Nuke and Stealth will allow hydration without the drawback of increased encumbrance.

Selecting the right hydration pack The benefits of hydration packs are clear. They are convenient, efficient and assist ongoing performance. Caribee hydration packs have been developed to aid most outdoor and extreme sport activity and as the name suggests, they are designed principally to transport water, plus a few small extras, in most cases, that is.

1) Day hikers/backpackers/climbers: Decide between 2 options:

Choose a pack engineered around a pre-installed reservoir. The reservoir should be custom-fitted for the pack, making it easier to access, fill and clean.

Add a reservoir to hydration-compatible backpack. Many Caribee backpacks are designed with an interior sleeve or compartment that can hold a reservoir (and offers a port for the drink tube)

2) Trail-runners/cyclists/fitness walkers:

Specialised “multisport” packs usually emphasize the low weight, small dimensions and stability important to these users. Cargo capacity, however, is small—just enough for keys and a wallet.

3) Snowboarders and skiers:

Choose between a smaller slimline hydration pack that will impede your movement or decide to use a larger volume pack that will allow you to pack all the necessities required for a full day on the snow.

Hygenic travel… a necessity Due to security and safety regulations, even frequent travellers can have difficulty recognising which travel accessories are allowed on flights. Hygiene is especially difficult when only a small amount of liquids are allowed past the security gate.

Keep clean on flights There are three key components to improving your hygiene on long haul flights and these include: 1. Non-Alcoholic Wipes While gels and liquids over 90mls are generally restricted on most flights, non-alcoholic moistened wipes are not.

Waist packs What we call waist packs are known as fanny packs in the USA. The name fanny pack is derived from the fact that they were traditionally worn facing the rear above the buttocks, for which “fanny” is a slang term in the United States. Despite the original name, don’t wear waist packs on their rear because they are easier to pick pocket and harder to access.

The hustle and bustle of a famous landmark or the tight confines of public transport allow their unwanted tentacles to circulate with little or no awareness. Their “mark” is any typical person, minding their own business, who will just happen to lose their wallet to you today. Their easiest targets tend to have their wallets just peeking out of their back pocket. These thieves don’t feel guilty nor to they harbour any remorse, you are just another lemming in their quest to feed their insatiable thirst.

What do we recommend? Well you don’t need to over compensate and look like the ultimate tourist, you know the ones, the numb nuts who wear their backpacks on their front – doesn’t this just scream, “I don’t belong hear, look at me!”. Be wary and vigilant. Any thing you don’t need with you, don’t take. Leave it in your room safe. Wear jeans, their tough material and tight pockets make theft more difficult and finally, have your Caribee back pack on you, it may not stop the pick pocketers, but when you notice them it will give them a nice wack to the back of their heads!

Water column ratings How P.U. coating affects the weather proofing of Caribee tents.

The water column test measures the level of PU coating, which is being used for making nylon and polyester tents waterproof.

Eg: 1000mm, means that there can be 1000mm water pressure per 1cm² on the tent fabric, before it starts leaking through. From 800mm on the material can really be called waterproof however it’s better to have a higher value, because there is a possibility that the coating wears out and the value decreases.
