Welcome Welcome to this the fourth Issue of Wickets, Cricket Canada’s official monthly online magazine. As always our hope is that Wickets’ provided content will prove to be both enjoyable and entertaining to you its Readers!

This month’s provided content includes our coverage of Canada’s highly encouraging performances in the recently concluded Caribbean Regional Super50 Competition. Foremost among these were those of our cover feature Romesh Eranga, who emerged as one of the Tournament’s leading wicket-takers. Thanks to outstanding and most generous support of Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. and its hospitality corporate partners, Accra Beach Resort and Courtesy Car Rentals, I was able to attend the Kensington Oval’s hosting of the Super50’s Semi-Final and Final. Having not been at the Oval since 2013, not only did it feel good to be back at the Mecca but I also thoroughly enjoyed the time spent with my fellow Caribbean cricket scribes: Messrs Harris, Parris, Spooner Stuart, Sealey. Mention must of course be made as well of the man who, as the Tournament’s Media Coordinator, played a huge role in making it all possible, the indomitable Woody Richards. Thanks Woody for your outstanding hospitality. As newly introduced content, this month’s Issue includes a Feature on Barbados Kensington Oval, as the historic Mecca of West Indies cricket. The ulterior motive behind this inclusion, which will likely be followed by similar features on other iconic Caribbean cricket venues, is that it will serve as a catalyst for Canadian Cricket’s painfully long overdue acquisition of its own bona fide home venue! The most cognizant Wickets Readers will be ever consciously aware that the “development of a world class cricketing venue within the next three years” was one the stipulations associated with Canada’s Global T20 hosting earlier this year. The clock has already started ticking for the fulfillment of that stipulation. Last Issue’s One To Watch feature was on the very promising up and coming talent that is Marcus Nandu. This month we are equally excited to feature his brother Matthew, who’s prospects for an outstanding future as a Canadian cricketer seem to be just as bright as those of his sibling.

Finally this month’s Issue also includes coverage of the Caribbean hosted ICC’s Women’s T20 World Cup, which at our November 22 production finalization was actually entering its semi-final stages. Australia set to face the defending champions West Indies in one semi and England taking on India in the other. Next month’s Issue will include detailed coverage of those matches as well as the Final.

Rashpal Bajwa was born in Jalandhar, India to an army family. His dad eventually retired as an Indian army Colonel. As a result Rashpal grew up in different parts of India like Allahabad,Jhansi,Dehradun and Hyderabad.He immigrated to Canada from Hyderabad in 1996 after finishing his Bachelors Degree in Engineering . Having settled in Canada, Rajpal completed his certification in aircraft maintenance engineering from BCIT. He then worked with Air Canada as a licensed aircraft engineer for over a decade. Rashpal now owns and manages his own own business with 15+ employees. Rashpal belongs to a very sports oriented family, his grandfather and father were extraordinary hockey players. His grandfather actually had the privilege to captain the team in which the legendary Indian hockey player Major Dhyan Chand played. Rajpal’s father also almost made the Indian national hockey team. Having been born within such an environment, Rashpal was a sports junkie since birth. He played all major sports at different levels including cricket. His main interest as a young boy was in track and field, with his main events being the 200 meters, long jump and triple jump. He participated in the SGFI Games triple jump and emerged as a silver medallist. He was also a member of the 4x100 meters relay team. Rajpal’s athletic success continued during his University days where he once won a gold medal in the triple jump and represented the College. Not surprisingly he also played hockey for Dehradun District. As far as cricket was concerned, Rajpal did represent his school in Grade 12 and was captain of his college team in a few tournaments. After immigrating to Canada cricket was the one sport that he kept in touch with. He joined the local British Columbia League and has been playing for the last 20 years, having only retired from his Surrey Hawks Cricket Club’s first team 4 years ago. He still plays for the Hawks’ Over 40s team, which has been 3 times champions in the last 4 years . Rashpal’s involvement with Cricket Canada began almost from Day One in 1997 when he started playing cricket in Canada. Initially he was only involved with the Surrey Hawks Club in a limited capacity. His

involvement then grew when he took on the responsibility of captaining the Second Team. From there he soon progressed to become the Club’s President in 2006. Since then Rashpal Bajwa’s rise through the ranks of Cricket Canada’s administration has been meteoric. In 2008 he was elected to the BCMCL League as a Delegate and just two years later, in 2010 he became the BCMCL’s Vice President. By the following year, 2011, Rashpal had become Cricket BC’s 2nd Vice President. Two years later, in 2013, he assumed full administrative control of Cricket BC by becoming its President. His outstanding performance in that role led to his 2016 election as a Cricket Canada Vice President. Rashpal Bajwa’s primary objective as a Cricket Canada Board Member is to further the development of grass root cricket all across Canada. He also hopes to achieve significant infrastructure development and mainstream exposure. Rashpal believes that if special emphasis is paid to grass root cricket it will go a long way towards maintaining the sustainability of the game in this country. He says that if Canada truly wants to become a full Test playing ICC member, more local cricketers will have to be developed. Rashpal also thinks that cricket infrastructure development will be key to Canada’s ability to be competitive with other cricketing countries. Canadian Cricket he says, has to be exposed to the mainstream public as only then will there be the significant numbers of players that can have a highly positive effect on the further development of grass root programs. As such the one major change and improvement Rashpal now wants to see happen in Canadian Cricket, within the next 2-3 years, would be the implementation of a first class cricket structure. He would also like to see the establishment of a cricket stadium that would allow Canadian Cricketers to show case their talent and host world class events.

VIKINGS CRICKET CLUB’S PROUD 36 YEAR HISTORY! In the year 1971 a group of young cricket enthusiast from Guyana get together to continue playing their loved sport (Cricket) in Canada. During the late sixties and the early seventies there were just a handful of cricketers from the West Indies playing in Toronto and evidently there was a scarcity of cricket equipment. In the summer of 1971 their anxieties to play cricket were so high that they arranged games without not having any gears, so they borrowed pads and bats from the opposing teams to play, only to be victorious. The winter months has given the Guys some time to formulate plans for the next year.

By the beginning of the summer of 1972 the group has been organized into a formidable cricket team named “ Vikings Cricket Club” (Vikings) the name was originated from the popular football team at the time “Minnesota Vikings”.

The main objective of the club is to promote cricket in Toronto and the districts thereto, participate in the junior development program and to arrange promotional matches to further the best interest of the game and its participants. Since its formation in 1972 Vikings has participated in the Toronto and District Cricket Association (T&D) with affiliation to the Ontario Cricket Association (OCA) and the Canadian Cricket Association (CCA) and still continue to play an active role in these Association. Vikings has started playing in the T&D league with one team and over the years has grown to three senior teams and one junior team, this is quite a remarkable achievement in a short period of time and presently Vikings is one of the most recognized and competitive club in Canada.

The success of Vikings can directly be attributed to the administrators, members, sponsors and the supporters who have set the foundation and have proudly carried the club with respect, courage and determination to its present standard and will ensure that the Vikings flag always fly high.

ROMESH ERANGA CANADA’S NEWFOUND BOWLING SPEARHEAD

The Edmonton based Eranga captured 17 wickets during the Tournament impressing all who saw him with his pace, movement and control. With Eranga now leading its bowling attack, Canada’s chances of dismissing opposition batting lineups seems to have improved significantly. The Sri Lankan born (16 June 1985) Romesh Eranga bowls left-arm medium-fast and bats left-handed.He became only the third Sri Lankan to take eight wickets in a List A innings; as he achieved the feat when he took 8/30 for Burgher Recreation Club against Sri Lanka Army Sports Club. In October 2018, he was named in Canada’s squad for the 2018–19 Regional Super50

tournament in the West Indies. He was the joint-leading wicket-taker in the tournament, with seventeen dismissals in six matches.

Following his outstanding performances in the recent Caribbean Regional Super50 Competition during which he emerged as one of the leading wicket-takers, Romesh Eranga has become the newfound spearhead for Team Canada’s bowling attack. Eranga’s outstanding Super50 performances included his match winning 6-21 against the Windward Islands which gave the Canadians their only win of the Tournament.

CCC MAROONERS CROWNED CARIBBEAN REGIONAL SUPER50 CHAMPS! Superbly led by West Indies T20 Captain Carlos Brathwaite, the Combined Colleges & Campuses (CC) Marooners emerged as champions of Cricket West Indies 2018 Super50 Regional Competition. In the October 28. Barbados Kensington Oval Final, the CCC Marooners comfortably defeated the Guyana Jaguars by 6 wickets to claim the 2018 Championship. Having taken first strike, the Guyana Jaguars were dismissed for 204 in 49.1 overs. Tagenarie Chanderpaul, the son of the former West Indies legend Shiv. Top scored with a beloured 56 made from 95 balls but the remainder of the Jaguars batting failed to perform as wickets fell regularly as a result of some fine bowling from the Marooners. Jermaine Levy with 4-43 from his 10 overs was the Maroonersâ€™ most successful bowler. He was ably supported by his Skipper Carlos Brathwaite who claimed 3-42.

In the October 25 and 26 Semi-finals that had been held at Kensington Oval to determine the October 28 finalists, Guyana Jaguars had defeated the Jamaica Scorpions in a close encounter while the much vaunted and star studded Trinidad Red Force had succumbed meekly to the eventual champions the CCC Marooners. CANADA COMPETITIVE AT CARIBBEAN REGIONAL SUPER50 COMPETITION Canada’s Red Army cricketers gave of their competitive best in the recently concluded Cricket West Indies Regional Super50 Competition. Playing against far more experienced opponents, including several West Indies Test and One Day International players, the Canadians fashioned one victory from the five matches actually played of the seven that had been scheduled. The Canadians second round matches against the West Indies B and Trinidad & Tobago were both unfortunately abandoned due to persistent rain.

The Caribbean Regional Super50 Cup is a Cricket West Indies annual tournament comprised of representative teams from the various Caribbean Islands. Cricket Canada has been sending their players to play in this tournament regularly as a means of presenting Canada’s elite cricketers with match play opportunities players to assess and acclimatize under overseas conditions.

Eranga was by far the Canadians best bowler throughout the Tournament. He captured 17 wickets from 6 matches played at an ultra impressive average of 12.12 with a 4.38 economy rate. Behind him the next best performer with the ball for Canada was Salman Nazar. His 6 Tournament wickets were captured at a 41.33 average with a 5.47 economy rate.

In the batting department, Canada’s best performer was Navneet Dhaliwal with a 306 runs Tournament aggregate, scored at an average of 45.17 with an 88.56 strike rate. Newly appointed team captain Davy Jacobs was second in the Canadian batting averages with an aggregate of 242 runs for an average of 35 and a strike rate of 72.31.

The Tournament started in 1972 while Canada first participated in 1996-97 season. Within recent years selected Canadian players have also participated in the tournament as members of ICC Americas team during the 2015-16 and 2016-17 Seasons. Canada’s 2018 Regional Super5o participation is the first in over a decade. In its 7 appearances to date, Canada has only managed to reach the quarterfinals once.

The Canadians sole victory came via their dramatic second round Match 5 defeat of the Windward Islands. Having set the Windwards a fairly modest victory target total of 206 off 50 overs, the Canadians rattled their opponents for 188 on the heals of an outstanding bowling performance by Romesh Eranga who captured 6/21 from his 10 allocated overs.

Australia won a record fourth ICC Women’s World T20 title with a comprehensive eight-wicket win over England at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua on Saturday. Under lights and in front of more than 10,000 spectators, Australia took wickets regularly to strangle England, and then waltzed to a win. Georgia Wareham,19, starred in the field for Australia: she was on a hat-trick, affected a direct-hit run-out, and took a catch amidst a rare sloppy Australian fielding effort; they dropped five catches, three of them straight-forward. Ashleigh Gardener then took home the Player of the Match award, hitting three sixes in the chase to build on a solid bowling effort. It gave Australia their first ICC trophy since 2014. Winning the toss, England chose to put runs on the board, but could not string a partnership of more than 23 in their innings. Opener Danielle Wyatt was the common thread in four of those partnerships as she put on an enterprising 43 (37b, 5x4, 1x6), looking particularly dominant when hitting over mid-off. Wyatt set the tone for England, taking 11 runs off the first over, but on a pitch that didn’t have the turn of two nights ago, Australia used their fast bowlers to rein things in. The pacers took two wickets in the first seven overs, the second of those giving Ellyse Perry her 100th T20I wicket, making her only the second player to breach that mark. Perry should have had the wicket earlier, but Alyssa Healy put down an outside edge off the bat of Wyatt, the second of three lives the batter received. Wareham compensated by running out Amy Jones with a direct hit from midwicket in the fifth over. The evening saw more such up-anddown fielding from Australia, but a smart catch from Meg Lanning in the 11th over finally saw the back of Wyatt. . Wareham then took over: After conceding just one run off the bat in her first over, she took two wickets in two balls in her second, the 13th, to leave England tottering at 74 for six. Despite captain Heather Knight’s rearguard 25 (28b, 1x4, 1x6), England were bowled out for 105 in the last over, with no other batter crossing double figures. Ashleigh Gardener claimed three for 22, including the wickets of Wyatt and Knight, to claim the best figures by a spinner in a World T20 final. Despite the small total, the festive crowd cheered every boundary the Australians hit in reply. They lost the fluent Healy in the Powerplay, but not before she has built a partnership of 29, scoring 22 (20b, 4x4) of those. Gardener (33 not out, 26b, 1x4, 3x6) and Lanning (28, 30b, 3x4) then finished the job, with Lanning scoring the winning runs off the first ball of the 16th over. Sir Vivian Richards gave away the World T20 trophy to Australia captain Lanning, and Healy took home the Player of the Tournament award for her 225 runs.

England 116 for 2 (Jones 53*, Sciver 52*) beat India 112 (Mandhana 34, Rodrigues 26, Knight 3-9, Gordon 2-20, 2-22) by eight wickets England bossed India in every department at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, as they produced a masterclass of adapting to unusual conditions to deny India a maiden appearance at a World T20 final. England, who last won the tournament in its inaugural edition in 2009, will play their fourth final on November 24, and meet Australia for the third time in the title match

They ripped through the lower middle sending India hurtling from 89 for 2 to 112 all out It was certainly a below-par total, but few would have predicted England chasing it down in such a friction-free manner. Meg Lanning’s Australian side vaulted into their fifth final, giving themselves a shot at a fourth title with a performance of a side with a demonstrated history of rising at crunch moments. West Indies’ hopes of a home final to do an encore of Kolkata 2016 went up in flames less than halfway into their chase of 143 on a sluggish surface where taking pace off the ball was vital. ANOTHER NANDU TO WATCH FOR: MATTHEW ROHAN Growing up, Matthew Rohan Nandu was always at the cricket ground, it was like a second home to him. He grew up watching his dad, Arjune play. It was indeed Arjune who fashioned Matthew’s introduction to cricket. Ever since then, Arjune as Matthew’s dad, has always been his coach and says the youngster “that he will always be!” Matthew has also been inspired by his brother, Marcus. He describes Marcus as a very hard worker who has never backed down from a challenge and one whom he Matthew doubts will ever back down from any challenges he may face in his lifetime. Marcus, says Matthew, is a person that if he wants to achieve something in life, he will put in the work to do so.

Matthew Nandu has played at the U13, U15, U17, and U19 levels for Tranzac Cricket Academy and now also plays for Tranzac’s Premier and Elite teams. During the recent senior team season he played 14 Toronto District Cricket League matches, capturing 14 wickets and scoring 372 runs at an average of 32. His scores consisted of 71, 57, 49*, 45, 42, 41. Matthew also plays for Kaieteur Cricket Club in the BEDCL, having made his debut at the age of 9, in 2014. In 2016 he scored 249 runs at average of 19 across 16 innings with his highest score being 40. In 2017, his batting performances were disappointing as he totaled only 149 runs at an average of 10. He had a reasonable season with the ball however, capturing the most First Division wickets, 30, at an average of 11.47. In the 2018 Premier Division Season, he did much better amassing 472 runs, at an average of 47.20, including his first century, 121. His other major scores were 96*, 52, 51* and 81. He also captured 28 wickets at an of average 13 across 12 games.

On July 3rd - 8th 2018, Matthew Nandu represented Ontario U17 at the Provincial Tournament which took place in British Columbia. He scored his second career hundred, 120, and finished the tour with a total of 345 runs with an average of 69. His highest scores were 120 and 83, 69, 36. His outstanding performances with the bat earned him both the Tournament MVP and Best Batsman titles.

Matthew has also represented Oakville Cricket Academy in the Sir Garfield Sobers International Schools U19 Cricket Tournament. He made his Tournament debut at the tender age of 12, and hasn’t stopped playing in it ever since then. The

July 9 - 24 2018, Tournament was the third that he’d actively participated in, during which he scored his third career century, 150, not out, with 20 fours and 3 sixes. He completed the 2018 Sir Garfield Sobers Tournament with a batting aggregate of 250 and an average of 38. He was also selected as a Sir Garfield Sobers International School Boys Cricket Tournament All Star. During August 2018, Matthew represented the Ontario High Performance U17 team which played against teams from across the GTA as well as one from Trinidad and Tobago. He had a pretty consistent Tournament, scoring a total of 225 runs at an average of 56.25 across 4 innings. His 225 runs consisted of a 62, 75, 7 and 81 respectively. Scores which helped the Ontario High Performance Team to win the 2018 Tournament. Matthew says that even though he now already had his fair share of struggles in the past, he had learnt that in order to succeed you have to fail over and over again. He therefore recognizes that he will have hurdles and obstacles to overcome but the thing that matters is how fast he can get over them. He appreciates that he may have to overcome negativity along the way if he wants to succeed or do well in the future. His plan however will be to use that negativity to motivate himself to work even harder towards getting to the next level. He says that the only thing he can do is to hold his head down and keep moving forward. Matthew Nandu’s adopted cricketing mission therefore is to continue to work hard and play cricket at the best of his ability towards the achievement of any goals that he has established for himself. As he pursues his stated mission, Matthew Arjune will certainly be “One To Watch!”
