As 2018 comes to a close Canada's cricketers will now be eagerly looking forward to the 2019 New Year and all of the exciting developments that should be on offer. As much should be evident if only as a natural progression of all that occurred in 2018 that was so good and beneficial to the further development of Canadian cricket. This Cricket Wickets fifth Issue will of course the last for the 2018 calendar year. And what an extraordinary year it has been for Canadian Cricket, punctuated as it was by exciting administrative developments at home and encouraging international performances by Canada's top players abroad. Canada's successful hosting of the Global T20 Tournament this past July should now easily be ranked as the most significant and exciting administrative development to have occurred in Canadian cricket within the past decade. Not only did the Tournament attract many of international cricket's marquee T20 players, including Chris Gayle, Andre Russell and others, but perhaps more importantly its televised coerage was also watched by well over 200 million viewers. To add icing to that already sumptously delicious cake there were the highly commendable performances of some of our Canadian players topped by Saad Bin Zafar's Man of the Match outing in the Tournament final.
Julie Rambali, infinitelinx.ca Canada's players also performed creditably during their various overseas assignments. The Canadian Team finished second behind their US hosts in the ICC World T20 PreQualification Tournament to keep their hopes alive for eventual qualification to the 2020 World T20 finals. Even more encouraging were the outstanding individal performances of Romesh Eranga as a bowler and Navneen Dhaliwal as a batsman in the recently concluded Caribbean Regional Super50 Championships. Although the Canadian team only registered one win from the six matches it played during the Championships, it was at all times superbly led by the newly appointed Captain, the former South African, Day Jacobs. With Jacobs, Eranga and Dhaliwal in the squad Canada has slowly but surely started pulling together a unit that should prove to be even more competitive in 2019 than it was this year.

Whatever happens in the New Year, Wickets Readers can be assured that they will be provided with the very best coverage of Cricket Canada's initiatives and activities. Here's to a most enjoyable 2018 Christmas Season for all and an exciting and progressive 2019 for Canadian Cricket.

National Senior, Development, Women's, U-19 and U17 High Performance Squads. These High Performance grid squad participants are all expected to begin training in January 2019. Canada became an overnight worldwide news sensation through the successful staging of Global T20 Canada. In its capacity to attract some of the world's very best players and by its record of having generated a worldwide television audience that was in excess of 200 million viewers, Global T20 was undoubtedly a tremendous success. Even more heartening were the highly commendable performances of the Canadian players who participated in some of the matches.
A Very Good Year for Canadian Cricket! 2018 has been a very good year for Canadian Cricket. As its governing body Cricket Canada 's Board of Directors can reflect on 2018 with a justifiable sense of pride for having accomplished the greater majority of the objectives we had established for ourselves at the beginning of the year. 2018, was a year when Cricket Canada began its long march towards becoming a Cricket nation. Towards that end we developed, approved and began to implement our strategic plan to become a leading Cricket nation. A new and modernized governance system has now been established and we are now in the process of incremental implementation of that system. A few committees have been set up, some are already functioning while others are ready to go through the training required before they can start working. One of the most successful and highly operational committees of 2018 has been the Women's Program Committee.
These are just some of the most notable highlights of Cricket Canada's 2018, which can now be accurately described as having been in so many ways “extraordinaire!” I want to make a special note of thanks and appreciation for the hard work and support provided by the members of the Board of Directors in accomplishing such major milestones in 2018. I must also thank the Government of Canada, under the leadership of the Rt.Hon. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, for its outstanding support of Global T20 Canada. With such a wonderful foundation to build on we can now all look forward with optimism to 2019 with the hope that will be an even more exciting and fulfilling year for Canadian Cricket. I have every confidence that come this time next year we will indeed have many ticks to indicate our successful completion of any even longer list of notable achievements! In the interim, on behalf of myself, my fellow Board Members and our Cricket Canada staff, I wish you all a most enjoyable Christmas Season and our very best wishes for a Happy and prosperous 2019. We look forward to your continued involvement in and support for Canadian Cricket in the New Year. Cheers Ranjit Saini – President Cricket Canada

Cricket Canada Making Steady Progress On Its Strategic Plan's Good Governance Objectives!
WICKETS
The Vision that has been established by Cricket Canada in its adopted Strategic Plan is for Canada “To be a leading cricket nation through growing popularity, building a sustainable organization and achieving international success!”

Towards its actual realization of that Corporate Vision, Cricket Canada has embarked upon the fulfillment of a slate objectives, one of which pertains to the ideal of “Good Governance!” Cricket Canada's
Good Governance objective is simply stated in its strategic plan as follows: “To develop and maintain the highest standards of governance and financial management!” By the end of 2018, less than year after the Strategic Plan was formally adopted by Cricket Canada's Board of Directors, Canada's Governing body for the sport of cricket can now justifiably boast as to having placed itself well on the way towards the complete fulfillment of its Good Governance objectives.
According to the Strategic Plan Cricket Canada's goals under its Good Governance umbrella were to be the following: Ÿ Transparency and accountability Ÿ Monitoring of the progress of strategic
planning Ÿ Modern policies that surpass expected

These include the number of fully staffed committees in place and reporting, the financial reporting frequency, the recorded number of successful financial audits and the level of compliance with established policies, as well as the degree to which Cricket Canada is in observance of Sports Canada and the International Cricket Canada's requirements.

compliance Ÿ Risk management based approach to governance Ÿ Financial management of the highest standards, as reflected by comprehensive financial controls, sound budgeting and budget tracking, internal and external audits, spending in line with strategic objectives. Ÿ Striving for continual improvement Towards the realization of these goals, Cricket Canada had also identified a series of initiatives, the respective implementations of which would service to produce the desired results. Foremost among those are the development of an ideal organizational structure, processes for internal auditing, budget creation, approval and monitoring, the use of accounting software, annual reviews of the organization's by-laws, Constitution, job descriptions and policies, as well as the monitoring of the actual Strategic Plan implementation itself.

According to Cricket Canada's President Ranjit Saini, his year end 2018 assessment would be that the organization has indeed made steady progress towards the fulfillment of its Good Governance objectives. Saini's expectations are that by the time Cricket Canada's 2019 AGM rolls around his Good Governance Report will serve to indicate an over 75% fulfillment achievement of the established objectives. Navneet Singh Dhaliwal was born on October 10, 1988 in Chandigarh, India. Not unlike so many of the other kids in the city, he started playing cricket when he was just 15 years old. Navneet played all his junior cricket, at the progressive Under-15, Under-17 and Under -19 levels in Punjab, under the watchful guidance of his Coach Sukhwinder Singh.
Navneet made his debut for Canada in Z i m b a bw e a g a i n s t t h a t country's A Team and scored 84 not out in his very first appearance in Canadian colors. He then had scores of 60+ in each of his next four appearances, as a result of which he was selected for his first List A game in January 15, 2015 against Kenya. He marked the occasion by scoring a brilliant 92 for which he was also named Man of the Match .
Navneet moved to Canada in 2010 and almost immediately started playing for Yorkshire Cricket Club in the T&D Premier League. His outstanding batting
Among Navneet's ever increasing list of outstanding performances, as a Canadian player, was the Man of The Match 72 he scored and the 2 wickets he took against
Namibia during that country's recent hosting of the ICC Division 2 Tournament. Largely as result of those outstanding performances, Navneet was drafted as a Toronto Nationals selectee for the Canada hosted GT20 Tournament Navneet now harbors fond memories of his most recent outstanding performances for Canada. In the T20 Qualifier held in the US this past summer. He scored 18 runs in the Super Over against the USA, with the Pakistan born Mr Ali Khan as the bowler, to help Canada win that match. His performances in Trinidad during the recent Cricket West Indies hosted Caribbean Regional Super50 Competition were also outstanding. Navneet scored 271 runs in the 6 matches he played during the Tournament. His scores included an 88 against Guyana and an 80 against the Windwards. He was unquestionably Canada's best batsman during the Competition.

2018 LOOKBACK
International Cricket Council (ICC) moved it to New Zealand after an inspection in June 2009 found that it would be unrealistic to expect Kenya to complete preparations in time. Australia won the tournament, beating Pakistan in the final by 25 runs. South African Dominic Hendricks scored the most runs in the tournament,[4] and Raymond Haoda of Papua New Guinea claimed the most wickets.
Gill, who was later named man of the match, said, "I didn't really know about that record (first Canada batsman to score a century in the U19 CWC), but it's honestly a great feeling. When I got to that milestone, I was just overwhelmed. It still feels surreal to me, I'm just letting it sink in."

Canada took part in the 2010 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, finishing in 11th position. They won two games in the competition, against Zimbabwe in the group stage and against Papua New Guinea in the play-off for 11th place. The 2010 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup was the eighth edition of the Under-19 Cricket World Cup and took place in New Zealand. Since 1998, the tournament has been held every 2 years. This edition had 16 teams competing in 44 matches between 15 and 30 January 2018. These included the 10 ICC Full Members and 6 Qualifiers. The tournament was originally scheduled to take place in Kenya, but the
All-rounder Akash Gill slammed the first century by a Canadian batsman in an ICC U19 Cricket World Cup match as the Canadians defeated PNG by 80 runs. Gill became the 13th player to notch a century in the 12th edition of the tournament. Gill cracked 12 fours and two sixes as Canada notched a competitive 265 for eight after being asked to bat first. Captain Arslan Khan and Ashtan Deosammy scored 35 apiece for Canada while fast bowler Faisal Jamkhandi and left-arm spinner Aran Pathmanathan grabbed three wickets each as PNG were bowled out for 185 in 44.3 overs.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS Saad bin Zafar, the 31-yearold Pakistan-born Canadian, dominated the final of the inaugural Global T20 Canada league with ball and bat. The six-team T20 tournament, which received attention because of the presence of a number of international stars in general and Steve Smith and David Warner in particular, wound to a close on Tuesday, 17 July.

Global T20 Canada Final Man Of The Match Saad bin Zafar!
The final was played between Vancouver Knights and the Windies B team at Maple Leaf (North-West Ground) in King City, Ontario, and Zafar, chiefly a left-arm spinner with little history of heroics with the bat, was the allround hero for the Knights. Asked to bat first by Chris Gayle, the Caribbean side put up 145 before being bowled out in 17.4 overs.
WICKETS
Fabian Allen, the 23-year-old all-rounder from Jamaica, was their best batsman, hitting a 23-ball 41 from No.8, while Windies paceman Sheldon Cottrell (4/29), Australian leg-spinner Fawad Ahmed (3/24) and Zafar (2/26) picked up most of the wickets.
12
The Knights chase seemed to have gone off the rails when they were 22/3 in the fourth over, but Zafar, batting for only the third time in the
tournament, smashed a 48-ball 79* and took them home in the company of South Africa’s Rassie van der Dussen (44*) in 17.3 overs for a seven-wicket win. Zafar hit eight fours and three sixes in his knock. Zafar has played just two first-class matches, both in 2008 for Canada in the ICC Intercontinental Cup, and 13 List-A games. A career-best spell from Romesh Eranga allowed Canada to stage stunning a upset in the WINDIES Super50 Cup match against the Windwards. The Sri Lanka-born Eranga's amazing and fiery 6 for 21 from 10 overs left the defending champions Windward Islands Volcanoes in shambles as Canada registered a shocking 18-run win in the October 13 CWI Super 50 Cup.
Chasing 207 for victory, Volcanoes never recovered, after Eranga removed the longstanding opening pair of Devon Smith and Tyrone Theophile for ducks in the space of four balls in the first over. Volcanoes further slumped to 40 for four in the 12 overs before Alick Athanaze came to the crease and put on 86 for the fifth wicket with Roland Cato.

Busy 2019 Beckons For Canada's Elite Cricketers
WICKETS
According to reports received to date on international competitions that have already been scheduled to occur in 2019, Canada's elite cricketers now seem destined to have a very active year. Hopefully the performances by Canada's players in the respective competitions will be sufficiently outstanding as to significantly advance this country's current stature as a competitive cricket country. Once ranked alongside Sri Lanka, back in 1975, as one of international cricket's top ten teams, Canada has slipped a far ways since then to now be competing at the ICC's Division 2 Level.
14
From April 18- 28th,2019 the Canadian Senior Men's National Team will have the opportunity to further establish its claims for progression beyond the ICC's Division 2. The Canadians are scheduled to play in Namibia at theICC WCL Div 2 Championships during that period. Just over two months later, Canada's Senior Men's Team will be provided with additional opportunities to further advance its international status. The Canadians will be participating in the ICC Americas T20 Qualifiers in July.
I n d i v i d u a l l y, s e v e r a l o f Canada's elite players are also expected to be drafted to the Franchise Teams that will be participating in next year's second edition of the Global T20 Canada Tournament that will be held in Toronto in July. Well over 20 Canadian players were involved in Global T20 Canada's 2018 Inaugural Season and that number is expected to more than double for the 2019 Tournament. On the distaff side, Canada's recently revamped Women's Cricket Programme will be further boosted by the scheduled participation of the Canadian National Women's National Team in the ICC T20 Women's World Cup qualifiers. The Qualifiers will be held in May - June 2019 at a venue that has not yet been revealed. There are also plans reportedly being developed for a Women's Club Invitational T20 Tournament to be hosted in St Lucia during 2019. The Tournament will be intended to build upon St Lucia's ultra successful hosting of matches in the recently concluded ICC 2018 Women's World T20 Championships. If and when it does occur, the St Lucia Women's Club Invitational Tournament will almost certainly provide opportunities for Canadian participation.

Not to be left out, Canada's U19 Junior cricketers can also look forward with eager anticipation to their participation in the ICC Americas Region Qualifiers in July. Canada's U19 cricketers enjoyed an outstanding 2018 Season, The Canadians finished well ahead of all other Associate countries in the 2018 ICC U19 World Cup that was held in New Zealand at the beginning of the year.

The benefits of having a TFSA that is not invested are almost non-existent.The Federal Government has announced that the annual contribution amount for Tax-Free Savings Accounts is being increased to $6,000 a year. Think a TaxFree Savings Account is just a savings account? Think again! Finally an investment account you can fund with mutual funds, stocks, and bonds for profits that will never be taxed! Due to its unfortunate name, which contains the term 'savings account', many Canadians have been misled to believe that TFSAs are simply a bank account that is non-taxable. Think Tax-Free INVESTMENT Account - not bank account! TFSAs are much more useful and beneficial as part of an investment plan than as a bank account. In fact, the benefits of having a TFSA that is not invested are almost non-existent. After factoring in the erosion of purchasing

The benefits of having a TFSA that is not invested are almost non-existent. The banks have been most successful in marketing TFSAs. Rather than making full use of their potential as part of an investment strategy, they offer high-interest rates on small deposits that are generally unavailable with regular savings or chequing accounts. These high-interest TFSAs currently offer a whopping 1.15% annual interest rate!2
If you maxed out your TFSA at the bank on the first day of the year every year since they were introduced (2009-2018) you would have saved $57,500 of your own money and at 1.15% interest it would have grown your savings to about $61,108. If that growth was taxable it could have been taxed at the highest rate (53.53% in Ontario for 2018). Using these simple numbers, you would find that you could have saved a maximum of about $1,931 in taxes over the ten years. This works out to about two extra coffees a week. In contrast, if the TFSA had been invested rather than just sitting at the bank, it could have achieved a reasonable return of 5% or more annually. In contrast, the TFSA Investment would have saved enough in taxes to afford an extra 10 coffees a week.

This past November Coco Palm also had its fair share of guests, including Wickets Photographer Lyn Balram and Publisher Tony McWatt, who were there for the sole reason of attending the St Lucia hosted matches of the ICC World Cup. All of which only serves to underline the reality of Coco Palm's undeniable status as the cricketing fraternity's most favored hotel within St Lucia.

Opened in 2005 as a boutique hotel, St Lucia's Coco Palm Resort offers just 103 rooms in total. 20 of the
Resort's rooms are located on its same site Creole sister property, just a very short walk from the main four storied building which houses the remaining 83 rooms. There are 6 adjacent swim up rooms on Coco Palms' ground level while the fourth floor houses the Resort Suites, which vary in size if not luxuriousness. The more luxurious of the Resort's suites offer panoramic views of the poolside, the Rodney Bay marina, the blue Caribbean Sea and the island's lush rolling hills. In addition to their panoramic view providing bay window seating, Coco Palms' suites also boast the rather unique feature of double luxury ensuite bathrooms, both with walk in showers and one with a Victorian tub. This rather unique amenity has proven itself to be quite popular with numerous families that are among its repeating guests. Coco Palm is ideally located right in the heart of St Lucia's famous Rodney Bay area. As such for Coco Palm's guests access to many of the most modern amenities St Lucia has to offer, are just within a short, leisurely walk. These include dozens of restaurants offering the widest variety of cuisine from authentic local St Lucian fare to Chinese, Indian, Mediterranean and Italian. There's even a Spanish Tapas joint located on the main strip. There are also of course, numerous bars that become quite boisterous at nighttime, dozens of duty free shops and more than a handful of multifloor ultra modern malls filled with countless stores.
There are also a number of bank branches and a Casino on offer on Rodney Bay's main drag, which again is just walking distance from Coco Palm. So too is the beach, one of the island's most picturesque is actually just across the road and less than a five minute jaunt away from Coco Palm's reception area. The clean very light brown sands, gentle warm water and views of the distant offshore islands that are all on offer are well worth the trek from hotel to beach. According to Coco Palms' Distribution & Revenue Analyst, Laudina Rogers, one of the Resort's most outstanding features is the readily obvious affinity between the resort's staff and its guests. Most guests she says quickly become known among the staff by their first names and are treated so well during their stay that they are made to feel very much as though they are a part of the Resort's family. Small wonder that Coco Palms can lay claim to having such an admirably high percentage of repeat guests among its visitor clientele.
him to retire altogether. The Coco Palms Jean St Rose manages today is a complete transformation from the virtual construction shell he'd inherited when Chastanet first handed him the property's management reins in May 2005. Chastanet's only stipulation in presenting Jean with both the opportunity and responsibility was that the property should be fully functional and ready to welcome its first 200 guests in July, just two months later, the reservations for which had all been confirmed!
Laudina's personal involvement with the Resort started from her position as an Assistant to the former Marketing Director, Feolla Chastanet, who is also a family member of its Chastanet owners. Ms Chastanet's position change opened the door and presented an opportunity for Laudina's progression, which she willingly grasped with both hands. In her current role, which is essentially that of the Resort's on-site Marketing Manager, Laudina says that the main objective for herself, as well as the general manager and all of the other staff members, is to very simply always meet if not exceed, the expectations of Coco Palm's guests.

As such Laudina works very closely with Jean St Rose, Coco Palm's General Manager towards fulfilling their guest expectations objectives. Having started his own hotel career at St Lucia' Sandal's Resort, Jean St Rose had in fact been hand picked by Coco Palms' Owner, the island's current Prime Minister Allen Chastinet, to be its General Manager. He started in that role when Coco Palms first opened it doors in July 2005, has continued performing its duties in the now thirteen years that have passed since then, and says that he fully intends to remain at the helm until the time eventually comes for

The fact that they were able to do so Jean says, was the result of the twenty-four-seven work effort that was put out by him and his fellow key staff members. That commitment to the tasks at hand, fueled by a determination to get all that's required done to standards that meet the satisfaction of guests, has become an enthusiastically adopted and willing practiced trait of Coco Palms staff under Jean St Rose's leadership since then. Those standards were initially established to such a high degree that the Guadeloupian Carnival group that had been Coco Palm's very first guests have been coming back in varying numbers every year since then. For them, not unlike Coco Palm's cricket guest fraternity, the Resort has long since been established as their St Lucian home base. Says Jean, “they feel very much at home here. They are connected to us and every year that they come, there's always a buzz of excitement on the property! Under Jean St Rose's management, Coco Palms has been developed as an authentic St Lucian Creole themed restaurant. From the décor of its rooms, to the warmth of its staff, the Resort has always attempted to be an embodiment of St Lucia's island culture. Jean therefore takes much pride in the fact that all of the Managers on staff at Coco Palms, as well as many others who have left to join some of the island's other hotels, are locals who have progressed through various roles to their current positions under his direct leadership.

Personnel development has always been and still remains as one Jean's St Rose's primary objectives. When he first entered the hotel industry, at the beginning of the

century, it was quite uncommon for native-born St Lucians to occupy management positions at any level. As a result of the emulatory examples set by him and a few others, many of whom were also his protégés, that tendency has changed significantly, to the degree that many of the island's hotels like Coco Palms are now being successfully managed by native St Lucians. Under Jean St Rose's leadership Coco Palm's management also seeks to ensure that the standards the Resort maintains are in keeping with those of the industry, which within the Caribbean can be both volatile and highly competitive at the best of times. Towards that end Coco Palms is actually undergoing major renovations to all of its rooms. The refurbishment of the ground and second floor rooms, complete with modernized furnishings and sleekly styled bathrooms, was expected to be completed well in time for the December to April peak Season. Always a favorite among visiting cricket fans, Coco Palms has already been completely booked for England's 2019 Tour of the Caribbean. None of the resorts rooms are available any longer for St Lucia's hosting of the Test and two West Indies – England One Day Internationals that are a part of the schedule. Many of those reservations were made directly through Coco Palms' recent acquisition of its very own booking engine. As part of its continuous venture into the use of social media as a primary marketing tool, Coco Palms will also soon be updating its website to make it far more functional as a promotional vehicle. Coco Palm's now very well established reputation as a somewhat unique boutique resort that prides itself on its outstanding guest treatment, is further evidenced by the fact that so many of those who have stayed at either of its properties do at some point return for repeat visits. Part of the reason for that is the outstanding food Coco Palm offers at its two on-site restaurants, both the spacious Ti Bananne and more intimate Creole Grill. Undoubtedly well established as a haven among cricketers and cricket fans within the Caribbean region, Coco Palms has now reportedly set its sights on becoming a repeat visit favorite among far more Canadians. Towards that end with all the wonderful qualities it has on offer there's every reason for St Lucia's Coco Palms Resort to become just as much of a treasured haven among Canadian cricketers and cricket fans as it already is for their West Indian counterparts.
Hetmeyer, Pooran, Rutherford, Thomas & Paul Awarded IPL 2019 Contracts! Emerging West Indian cricket stars Shimron Hetmeyer, Nicholas Pooran, Sherfane Rutherford, Oshane Thomas and Kemo Paul were among the new faces featured in the November 18 Draft Auction for the 2019 Indian Premier League Season. West Indies T20 Captain Carlos Brathwaite also featured in the draft by being sold to the Kolkata Knight Riders for INR 5 crores. Hetmeyer received the highest pricing among the new West Indians. He was bought for INR 4.2 crore (approx USD 583,000) by Royal Challengers Bangalore. Knight Riders beat out the Kings XI, the franchise with the biggest purse at this auction, in the quest for Carlos Brathwaite, acquiring him for INR 5 crores (approx USD 694,000). The West Indies allrounder first made a name for himself in the World T20 final in 2016 when he hit four sixes off four balls to win the title at Eden Gardens. Oshane Thomas, who is known to hit speeds of 150 kph, will do just that for Royals, who acquired him for INR 1.1 crore (approx USD 153,000) Hard-hitting wicketkeeper batsman Nicholas Pooran will join Kings XI's squad, for INR 4.2 crores (approx USD 583,000). Allrounder Sherfane Rutherford, with a T20 strike-rate of 142 and a first-class best of 6 for 32, joined the Delhi team for INR 2 crore (approx USD 277,000) Hetmeyer, Pooran, Rutherford, Thomas and Paul all had standout performances during the 2018 Caribbean Premier League which caught the attention of the Indian Premier League Scouts. Hetmeyer and Thomas were also among the very few West Indians with credible performances during the Windies’ recently completed disastorous tours of Indian and Bangladesh. The Windies lost both the Test and One Day International Series against their respective hosts India and Bangaldesh. The 21-year-old Hetmeyer, who made his T20 debut in 2016, has scored 498 runs in 18 matches at an average of 31.12. He also showed his class during the ODI series against India when he recorded scores of 106 and 94 in the first two matches of the series.

Aside from the five emerging stars several other West Indian stalwarts such as Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo, Kieron Pollard, Sunil Narine and Evin Lewis were also retained by their respective IPL franchies.

England Unchanged For West Indies Tour! England have stuck with the players who claimed a historic Test whitewash in Sri Lanka last month in naming their squad for the Caribbean. Ollie Pope, who left Sri Lanka to join up with the Lions in the UAE, misses out and there was no room for Jason Roy, despite speculation he could be included as a spare top-order batsman. Ben Foakes, who was not part of the original party for Sri Lanka but claimed the Man of the Series award after making his debut as wicketkeeper after an injury to Jonny Bairstow, is the only official addition to the 16-man group. In the ODI squad, David Willey returns following injury and Joe Denly is included, having been called up as an injury replacement for Liam Dawson (Denly subsequently won the Man of the Match award in the only T20I against Sri Lanka). Dawson, Sam Curran and Olly Stone, who provided cover for Liam Plunkett in Sri Lanka, are the players to drop out. The conclusion of the ECB Cricket Disciplinary Commission's investigation into Ben Stokes and Alex Hales after their behaviour on a night out in Bristol in 2017 means that both are included without caveat. England's 3-0 Test success in Sri Lanka via a brand of attacking batsmanship had led to the suggestion that Roy, a fixture at the top of the one-day order and who featured for the Lions in a four-day game against Pakistan A last month, could be selected for the first time. Denly has however been retained, having been overlooked for a debut in Sri Lanka.

The depth available to Joe Root means that England could still field a three-man spin attack, if conditions in the Caribbean dictate, but they also retain plenty of pace options. James Anderson and Stuart Broad, England's record-breaking new-ball pairing, could be reunited, while Sam Curran, Chris Woakes and Stone can all stake a claim.

Bairstow, who scored a century on his first appearance at No. 3 in Colombo, is likely to get a run at the position
in three Tests against West Indies, ahead of the 2019 summer's Ashes. Next year also promises to be a defining one for England's one-day squad, as they attempt to win a first World Cup on home soil. Eoin Morgan's side features a largely settled batting order - barring some competition between Roy, Bairstow and Hales at the top - but there has been some jockeying among the bowlers. Willey missed the last tour with a back problem but has been a consistent part of the set-up since 2015, while Plunkett is fully available again after a clash with his wedding. Mark Wood has also been persisted with, despite one underwhelming appearance in Sri Lanka, with Sam Curran and Stone seemingly slipping back in the race for a World Cup spot. The five-ODI series against West Indies will be followed by three T20Is, for which England have yet to name a squad. They then face Ireland in a one-off game in Dublin, followed by five ODIs against Pakistan to kick off the home season before the start of the World Cup on May 30. England Test squad: Joe Root (capt), Moeen Ali, Jimmy Anderson, Jonny Bairstow, Stuart Broad, Rory Burns, Jos Buttler, Sam Curran, Joe Denly, Ben Foakes, Keaton Jennings, Jack Leach, Adil Rashid, Ben Stokes, Olly Stone, Chris Woakes England ODI squad: Eoin Morgan (capt), Moeen Ali, Jonny Bairstow, Jos Buttler, Tom Curran, Joe Denly, Alex Hales, Liam Plunkett, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, David Willey, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood
