With all that occurred during 2018 that was so exciting and encouraging available to serve as a platform, 2019 will hopefully prove itself to be a watershed breakthrough year for Canadian cricket. A very real opportunity now exists for Canadian Cricket to have a stellar year, simply by virtue of a few minor improvement tweaks in its core areas of activity. Administratively, Cricket Canada's road map as to how to become a super efficient and outstandingly effective Board has never been clearer. The Strategic Plan, which the Board officially adopted in 2018, outlines a very clear path to its increased efficiency. All President Ranjit Saini and his cohorts simply have to do would be to actually secure the implementation of the very same strategic initiatives they themselves have included in the adopted Strategic Plan. Addressing and correcting the very obvious shortcomings of the Inaugural Global T20 Canada Tournament, should make for a much better 2019 event. The likelihood of increased Canadian participation should also serve both as an inventive for local players and as an attraction for greater spectator support. One of the many necessary improvements the Organizers would do well to consider, would be the availability of shuttle buses to provide transportation for spectators from established city points to the King City venue. Far more attractive ticket pricing, which would allow affordable family attendance, should also be considered. 1000 tickets sold @ $5 each will yield far greater revenues than 200 at $15! 2019 will also provide the Canadian Red Army Men's Senior team with further competitive opportunities to advance Canada's international ranking. As their 2018 outings would have suggested, Canada's Men's Senior team is unquestionably graced with outstanding individual talent. All that's required is for them to have greater self-belief, to play together as team and to the best of their individual abilities.

The highly commendable 2018 rejuvenation of the Canadian Women's Cricket Programme, as well as the impressive progress that was actually made through the implementation of several noteworthy initiatives, should provide a readily available platform for even more impressive 2019 endeavors. Not the least of which will be Canada's female cricketers engagement in the qualification process for the next ICC Women's s World Cup to be held in 2020.

Time For Cricket Canada To Get Going On its “Go Canada” Strategic Plan Objectives! According to the Strategic Plan that was officially adopted by the Cricket Canada's Board of Directors at their May 2018 Annual General Meeting, one of the six structural core objectives to be pursued under a Go Canada title would be to “ raise the profile of cricket through promotion and public engagement!” While it may have been doing an impressive job to date towards the fulfillment of its other five Strategic Plan core objectives, Cricket Canada's "Go Canada" efforts now need to be much more aggressively pursued and further streamlined.
Wickets has to date has certainly been of excellent service towards the promotion of Cricket Canada's initiatives and activities. With each successive Issue, Wickets appeal among Canadian cricket fans has been increasing impressively enough as to suggest that Cricket Canada's 'fan engagement” is definitively well on track. Cricket Canada's intended plans to release a new and much improved website in the very near future will also serve to directly address its objective for the development of online resources. It may also provide

some value as an additional promotional vehicle for the organization. One would hope however, that Cricket Canada's outlined plans for its marketing will be far more comprehensive than just an improved website. So too for Cricket Canada's management of its relationships with government and media.

The specific Strategic Initiatives Cricket Canada has identified as being required for implementation towards the fulfillment of its outlined, foregoing, c o re o b j e c t i v e s a re a s f o l l ow s : improving the website; developing streaming production; increasing social media presence; improving its public relations as well as its media, government, member and sponsor relationships and the development of a marketing strategy.
Of these, mention has already been made of Cricket Canada's plans to very soon reveal its new and much improved website. Highly impressive progress has also been made in regards to the development of streaming production. This much was evidenced by CBC Television's streaming of the 2018 Inaugural Cricketfest matches. There was also of course the worldwide televised coverage that was provided for Toronto's 2018 hosting of the Global T 2 0 C a n a d a To u r n a m e n t w h i c h attracted an ultra impressive array of the world's very best T20 cricketers. Global T20 Canada's frenetic Facebook, Instagram and Twitter activity would also have served to increase Cricket Canada's social media presence. CC needs to reflect more on its post event social and traditional media engagement activity.

Those metrics have been identified as being the number of streaming events; the recorded Media score (broadcast hours, digital impressions) and spectator attendance at Cricket Canada events. All interested eyes will therefore now be focused squarely on Cricket Canada to see exactly how it established metrics.

Bhavindu Adhihetty started playing his cricket at the age of 7. He played School cricket at Colombo, Sri Lanka's Wesley College and made impressively steady progress through the U11, U13 and U17 ranks. He also joined Colombo Cricket Club (CCC) and played under the guidance of the Club's Coach: Nelson Mendis. Having migrated to Canada in 2010, Bhavindu joined Centurions Cricket Club to play Under13, U15, U17, and U19 cricket. The combined guidance of Centurions' Coaches, Shanti Kumar and Dhanuka Pathirana, helped him excel through the Club's junior system.

In 2014 Bavindhu met Anusha Samaranayake. a Sril Lankan National team Coach. He took Bhavindu under his wing, continuously helping him to improve his batting technique to a different much higher level. As a result Bhavindu was able to perform tremendously in his debut 2016 T&D Super Six Season, scoring an aggregate 724 runs to becoming the 3rd highest run scorer in the entire tournament.

Adhihetty: Canada's Batting Prodigy!
On those performances and with growing confidence he was able to play in Sri Lanka's Under 23 tournament at the age of 16 with direct guidance of Coach Anusha Samaranayake. Prior to the ICC Division III Tournament, Bhavindu was also a member of Canada's squad for the 2016 ICC U19 World Cup. In July 2017 he was appointed Captain of U19 Squad to the ICC America's Under 19 Championships. In January 2018, Bhavindu was named to Canada's Squad for the ICC World Cricket League Division II Tournament. He made his List A debut for Canada on February 8, 2018.

During this past 2018 T&D Season, Bhavindu amassed 505 runs averaging just under 40 with one century and four half-centuries. All this at the very top level of Canadian Cricket and now aged only 18. A Canadian Batting Prodigy indeed.

The Good: Canada One Step Closer To World Cup Qualification Dream As outlined in last month's Wickets Issue there was much that was so good and worthy of celebration for Canadian Cricket in 2018. Of all the numerous notable achievements the one that indisputably stands out as being “best of the best� was the Canadian Senior Team's qualification for the Regional Finals of the World T20 Qualifiers. An occurrence which brought Team Canada a step closer to the dream of playing in the ICC's 2020 T20 World Cup. At the Raleigh, North Carolina USA hosted Sub Regional Qualifiers Canada's cricketers showed exceptional skills and temperament throughout the Tournament to grab a spot in the finals. Canada won almost every match played authoritatively by huge margins. In each of their two matches against Panama they bowled out the opposition for 42 and 40. Against Belize the performances were almost identical. The Bermudians were twice dismissed by the rampant Canadians for lowly scores of 42 and 32 respectively. Canada won all four of these matches by 10 wickets. The Canadian's matches against their oldest opponents the USA, were the two most exciting encounters of the entire tournament. In the first match against their neighbours, Canada's batsmen displayed superb fighting spirit until till the very last ball of the match to ensure the necessity of a Super Over to determine the final outcome.
Canada's only loss of the tournament came in their second match against the USA. In yet another exciting and dramatic finish the USA eventually won by scoring the required runs in the very last over. Canada's next assignment will be the 2019 Regional Finals, during which its Red Army cricketers will be up against the USA, Bermuda and the Cayman Islands. There are two spots up for grabs for which these 4 teams will be competing. Once Canada grabs one of the two available spots they will then become eligible to play in the ICC WT20 Qualifiers. That final Qualifier Tournament will have 25 international teams from around the world competing for six available participation spots for the 2020 ICC T20 Word Cup. Here's to Team Canada's continued success as it pursues its 2020 ICC T20 World Cup participation dream. Go Good Red Army!

The Super Over requirement was necessitated by Rizwan Cheema's dramatic last ball six, which had leveled the scores and tied the game. Batting first in the Super Over Canada scored 15 runs. They then
successfully defended that score to win the game.

need of improvement. As much was evident from the fact that despite Canada's population being comprised of well over 5 million residents from cricket playing countries such as Bangladesh, the Caribbean, India, Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka the 7,000-seat Global t20 Tournament venue was never even half full! So what's holding back these diehard fans of the sport? Accessibity to the King City venue itself – as it was way out beyond the GTA's immediate city environs - would rank high on the list, even though the organizers have did an excellent job in transforming it from a virtual cow patch into a superb cricketing facility. The timing of the 2018 Tournament was also ill advised. It was staged slap bang in the middle of Russia's football World Cup, with its enthralling matches and numerous upsets to boot. Too many cricket fans were also football enthusiasts who had their eyes glued to their television sets.
The Bad: Global T20's Canadian Homecoming Before delving into all the obvious shortcomings of Global T20's Canadian homecoming as badly in need of crucial improvements as it was, let's be clear in our assessment that event was all things considered overall still a noteworthy success. Honest self-assessment is however a necessary prerequisite for improvement. As such in order for future Global T2o Canada Tournaments to be as good as they can be, an identification of the required areas of improvement would be very much in order. On the success side of the Tournament's final assessment sheet was its impressive attraction of many of the world's very best T20 Players. There was also the eventual attraction of a multi million global television audience as viewers to the Tournament's final. Just as important was the noteworthy participation of several Canadian players, the icing on top of that delicious cake having of course been Saad Bin Zafar's match winning performance in the Final.

Overall 31 Canadians participated in the League, including many players on Canada's current national team. In so doing they were provided with unique fortuitous opportunities to rub shoulders with and learn from some of international cricket's very best playing and coaching talents.

For all that was good about Global T20 Canada 2018 there was also, undeniably much that was bad and in desperate
Perhaps the major disincentive for attendance at the Tournament however was the pricing. Ticket pricing which would required a family of four paying in excess of $100 including parking, was just too unreasonable for a first year event at an extremely remote venue. So too were the hospitality and seating arrangements for the open bleachers. $10 for a beer which could only be consumed in a restricted area with limited visibility to the on field action was again a major turnoff particularly among Canada's alcoholically inclined Caribbean cricket fans. Finally the Tournament schedule itself which made for relatively meaningless Preliminary Round encounters, the eventual outcomes of which had little bearing on playoff qualification, meant that there wasn't that much spectator interest generating excitement from matches that were being played at 11:00 am on weekdays! So too was the overall atmosphere, which was overbearingly South Asian. Those are just some of the many areas for required improvement that made for a 2018 Lookback assessment of Global T20 as having been just as bad as it was good!

The Indifferent: Canada's Regional Super50 Performance! Although having supposedly given of their competitie best Canada's Red Army cricketers managed only a singlke victory from the five matches actually played in the 2018 Cricket West Indies Regional Super50 Competition. The Canadians sole victory came via their dramatic second round Match 5 defeat of the Windward Islands Playing against far more experienced opponents, including several West Indies Test and One Day International players, the Canadians fashioned several noteworthy individual performances but failed to ultimately produce the necessary goods as a team, except for the one victorious occasion against the Windwards. An examination of the actual Match results would suggest that the Canadians major failure was in their batting. In the five matches played the Canadians only twice managed to ammas scores of over 250. Their remaining match totals were all in the range of 200-210 at an average of just over 4 runs per over. Hardly competitive against teams with batting lineups which included several West Indies players with Test and One day International experience!
Canada's 2018 Regional Super5o participation was the first in over a decade. In its 7 appearances to date, Canada has only managed to reach the quarterfinals once. The Canadian Squad which participated in the 2018 Cricket West Indies Regional Super50 Tournament was as follows:David Jacobs (Captain), Nitish Kumar, Cecil Pervez, Dilon Heyliger, Navneet Dhaliwal, Nikhil Dutta, Harsh Thaker, Salman Nazar, Srimantha Wijeyeratne, Bhavindu Adhihetty, Rodrigo Thomas, Romesh Don, Sukhdeep Brar, Ruvindu Gunasekera.

In the batting department, Canada's best performer was Navneet Dhaliwal with a 306 runs Tournament aggregate, scored at an average of 45.17 with an 88.56 strike rate. Newly appointed team captain Davy Jacobs was second in the Canadian batting averages with an aggregate of 242 runs for an average of 35 and a strike rate of 72.31.
Romesh Eranga was by far the Canadians best bowler throughout the Tournament. He captured 17 wickets from 6 matches played at an ultra impressive average of 12.12 with a 4.38 economy rate. Behind him the next best performer with the ball for Canada was Salman Nazar. His 6 Tournament wickets were captured at a 41.33 average with a 5.47 economy rate.

Go Cricket: A Better And Brighter 2019 Beckons As good and exciting as 2018 may have been for Canadian Cricket, 2019 has all the potential to be even brighter and that much better. As much should be evident from the preliminary list of events that Cricket Canada has confirmed will be occurring this year.

Canada's Men's Senior team will jumpstart its cricketing calendar, for what it hopes will be a very productive and rewarding 2019, with its April 18-28 participation in the ICC World Cricket League Division 2 Championships. The Namibia hosted Championships will determine the pecking order for the ICC's Division 2 Teams. It will also serve as an

early indicator as to which of the participating countries will be most readily eligible for promotion to the ICC's Division 1. Canada's encouraging performances of late, particularly in the international competitions it participated in towards the end of 2018, will provide its Red Army Senior Men's Cricketers with confidence that should be sufficient to ensure that they have a very successful Tournament. Individually they certainly have the required talent. Collectively as a team they will just have to believe in themselves while executing their established match plans to the best of their abilities.
While Canada's men cricketers will be busying themselves at the Namibia Championships, its ladies will also be similarly busy attempting to secure a spot in the next ICC Women's T20 World Cup. The ICC T20 Women's World Cup qualifiers, at which Canada will be among the participating teams, will be held this coming May - June 2019. The venue for the tournament has as yet been finalized. Following their Namibia stint, Canada's Senior Men's will also be back in international action with their participation in the ICC America's T20 Qualifiers, which are scheduled to take place in July. Bermuda, Canada, the Cayman Islands and the US will be the four teams participating in the Tournament.

A significantly increased number of Canadian players are also expected to be drafted for participation in this year's Global T20 Canada Tournament, which has been scheduled to be staged from July 26August 11. Last year's 2018 Inaugural Global T20 Canada Tournament attracted the participation of 31 Canadian players, appearing alongside the world's very best cricket stars. For Global T20 Canada 2019 the number of participating Canadian cricketers is expected to more than double.

JB Masters: Brampton’s All Conquering Cricket Club

JB Masters Cricket Club (JBMCC formerly Brampton Masters Cricket Club) was established in 1996, by a group of friends with the goal of keeping the culture of cricket alive in Brampton. Initially established as a non-profit organization, JBMCC provides an opportunity for talented young cricketers to train under the guidance of professional coaches. As a club JBMCC is committed to improving the quality of cricket regionally, nationally, and internationally. The Club's guiding premise is to involve community, parents,
and youth in cricket programs that will allow everyone to benefit. As a Canadian Cricket Club JBMCC's established Objectives are as follows: training cricketers in the most advanced skills of the game, within the best possible coaching environment; providing players with opportunities to experience the highest levels of competition; enhancing players' love of the game; supporting each player's dream of participation in competitive play and
Association League, Canada's oldest and most established cricket competition. This meant starting from the very bottom of the League in order to gain respect, as a club to be reckoned with. The Club's shift can be attributed to the new leadership and focus that realized the beckoning opportunity for continued success. Progressively JBMCC for the next 5 years won every division, and as a result gained promotion year after year. In its first year after having been promoted to the T&D's Premier Division the Club stamped its mark by winning the Season final convincingly, thereby becoming the only club in the TDCA's illustrious 85 plus year history to have achieved this goal. With the formation of the TDCA's Elite division, JBMCC was automatically one of the teams promoted and duly went on to win that title as well. JBMCC are also currently Champions of the newly created Super Elite League. This makes JBMCC the only club in Canadian Cricket history to have won every available title. JBMCC also proudly boasts a reputation that has welcomed players from around the world to play cricket in Canada. The club has a strong and focused Executive Board, an excellent coaching staff and a number of programs for players at all levels of the sport. sharing each player 's pride in achieving established personal achievement targets. JBMCC's has also identifies a set of goals for its pursuance as a Club. These are as follows: Providing an environment for the Players to perform to the best of their abilities; providing specific training for all players in their area of expertise; offering financial assistance and support for BMCC players and establishing a disciplined environment.
2016 was the most difficult year for the Masters family. The tragic passing of its most dedicated and successful Sports Director Mr. Johnny Bujan left all members in a prolonged state of shock and grief. In honor of his memory and as a family, JBMCC's members have since committed themselves to carrying on his legacy together for many years to come.

Canadian Women Cricketer's Plotting Their Return To International Cricket!

After a hiatus of five years the Canadian Women's Team will once again have the opportunity to play international cricket in 2019! A long-awaited return has been made possible by a decision taken by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Oct 20, 2018 changing the qualification pathway.

The International Cricket Council confirmed that there will be a qualifying event in all five ICC regions ( Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia, East Asia Pacific) with the top team in each region progressing to the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup Qualifier / ICC Women's World T20 Qualifier. This changes the qualification to the 2021 ICC Women's
World Cup which will now see the hosts plus the top four teams from the ICC Women's Championship qualify directly whilst the bottom three teams in that competition will join Bangladesh, Ireland and the five regional winners in the Qualifier. The last time a Canadian Women's team competed internationally was in 2013 when they won the America's Cup (Regional Qualifier) and went on to play in the ICC Women's T20 Qualifier in Dublin, Ireland Jul 23-Aug 1, 2013. With the suspension of the A m e r i c a's C u p ( re g i o n a l q u a l i f y i n g tournament for the Americas Women's teams), no team from the Americas has had the opportunity
to compete in any regional/international tournament. However, in 2017 the USA Women's team was allowed to compete in the Europe/Americas qualifier in Scotland without any regional qualifying tournament being played to determine a regional winner. This year, ICC Americas has recently announced that a qualifying event will be played between USA and Canada (May 2019) to determine the Americas team that will participate in the next ICC Women's T20 qualifier. Canada Women's Events With the return to International Cricket, 2019 is shaping up to be an exciting time to be playing cricket in Canada. In anticipation of the opportunities coming up, CC hosted the first ever Women's National tournament last year to identify the talent pool. A training squad to prepare for the qualifying event to be held in May in Florida, will soon be announced and a series of training and preparation
events will follow. The event in May will feature some warm up games with a MCC women's team and a combined team from the South Americas followed by a regional qualifier between the USA and Canada. CC recently announced that Rupert Stephenson ( ICC Level 2 Coach) will be the Coach for the Women's National team. CC is encouraging Provincial Cricket Boards to ramp up competition events for the women through the year with the Women's Nationals being the culmination event for the season. CC's vision is to expand the National tournament to include more domestic teams and feature some international teams as well to increase the competitive level of the tournament.

Tranzac Cricket Academy Helping To Drive Canadian Women’s Cricket Forward! As one of the few cricket entities in Canada to host a Women's team, Tranzac Cricket Academy has been in the forefront of recently renewed efforts to drive Canadian Women's Cricket forward. Tranzac's Women's team emerged as winners of the 2018 Scarborough Cricket League. Within recent years Women's cricket has become one of the world's fastest growing sports. Although the first ever Women's World Cup had preceded the Men's version by a year, generations of gutsy women who had previously taken to women's cricket had not been able to make the kind of impact that the current generation has. There are a lot of factors responsible for the unprecedented growth in recent years but the most
significant of these is the emergence of professional leagues and the consequent live broadcast of the games. While Australia, England, India, South Africa, New Zealand and the West Indies women dominate the sport, countries such as Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Ireland are making big inroads. The International Cricket Council has mandated that all members should have a women's program alongside the men's and while this augurs well in theory to promote the sport among women there are many practical issues and hurdles that still need to be surmounted.
Here in Canada, where there is a diversity of population unlike any other country, many Canadians with roots from these cricket playing nations yearn for opportunities to learn and play the sport. Despite the long winters, the fans and fanatics of this game are forever seeking out places where they can train and keep in touch, eagerly awaiting the summer when they can go outside and enjoy the weather doing the one thing that they so strongly crave – play cricket! What began as Coach Sheriff Boodhoo's individual effort to encourage women and girls to take to the sport has now transformed into an academy where senior players who went on to represent Canada are now encouraging girls and women by offering their time and experience, creating an atmosphere of congeniality and support. At a point in time nearly half the players on Team Canada's roster were either from the academy or had some connections to it.

Creating A Retirement Nest Egg – The Sooner You Start The Better Some of you may be wondering, “When should I start saving for retirement and how much do I need to save?” Depending on the individual circumstances of your life the answer can vary, but there is one simple answer that will never be wrong: START SAVING AS MUCH AS YOU CAN, AS SOON AS YOU CAN. Maximizing the amount of time your savings have to grow will maximize the effects of compounding over time and therefore minimize the amount you need to contribute. The more your money grows, the less principal needed to grow from. To help illustrate we have a table below showing the total retirement nest egg accumulated by age 65 using various monthly savings amounts and starting ages.

for later in life to save for retirement is staggering. Those of us who are lucky enough to have a defined benefit pension plan will have a head start, but these plans are not all free money. Defined benefit plans are funded by you (and sometimes your employer's matching) through the deductions they take from your salary. This is not much different than an RRSP except that the contributions are less voluntary; they take them off your paycheque before you ever receive it. Typically, public service pension plans require contribution rates of 10-20% of gross income. The longer you wait the more difficult the savings requirement. Starting at age 30 instead of age 20 means having to save almost twice as much every month until age 65 in order to accumulate a similar size nest egg. This trend of doubling the amount of savings required continues roughly every 10 years longer you wait. At age 60 it is far too late to make up for lost time.
Paying Yourself First Now that we can see how important it is to start saving as much as possible as early as possible, I want to tell you how to achieve this. For most people saving seems hard but it really isn't that difficult. For many people the reason it is difficult is because they don't have a budget or they spend money without giving it much thought. Spending is not the key to saving, saving is. Don't plan to spend and then save what is left over. Plan to save and then spend what is left over. This is often referred to as 'paying yourself first' and it is no different than how a defined benefit pension plan works. All you have to do is decide on the amount that you will save each month and then be sure to always pay yourself (set it aside) before you pay any other bills or expenses. An even better way to manage this is by
setting up an automatic system where you don't even have to think about setting it aside as it is already set aside for you. There are many different ways to do this with the assistance of a Financial Advisor and some employers can help you with this too. 2019 has started and the clock is already ticking. Start paying yourself first!

Darren Bravo Returns To West Indies Test Squad To Face England! Darren Bravo is set to play his first Test in more than two years, after being named in West Indies' for the January 23-29 Barbados hosted first Test against England as well as the January 31-February 4 Second Test to be held in Antigua. Bravo, who hasn't played Test cricket since the tour of the UAE in October 2016, was recalled to the West Indies one-day squad late last year following talks between Cricket West Indies and a handful of its estranged high-profile players. With 3400 runs at 40.00 in 49 Test appearances, Bravo's return adds a welcome layer of experience to a West Indies' batting line-up that struggled on their recent tour of Bangladesh, losing the series 2-0 including an innings defeat in the second Test in Dhaka. He could be joined by two debutants in West Indies' batting ranks, following the inclusions of John Campbell, a 26-year-old left-handed opener from Jamaica, and Shamarh Brooks, a 30-year-old Bajan who captained the West Indies Under-19 team at the 2008 World Cup.

ICC 2020 World T20 Schedules Announced The fixtures for the ICC T20 World Cup Australia 2020 were revealed in Sydney, Australia on Jamuary 29. For the first time, the women's and men's T20 World Cups will be held as standalone events in the same year and in the same country. The ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2020 will take place from 21 February – 8 March 2020, culminating in the final at the MCG on 8 March 2020, International Women's Day. This presents a groundbreaking opportunity to set a new world record for attendance at a women's sporting fixture.
