Welcome to this the second Issue of Wickets Cricket Canada's official monthly online magazine. I am delighted and fully appreciative of your demonstrated interest in Cricket Canada's activities and initiatives. I hope that this Wickets Issue's Canadian cricket coverage will be as enjoyable to all of you our Readers as that of our Premiere Issue, which from all reports was very well received. As Cricket Canada's official monthly online magazine, Wickets stated objective is to become highly favored and enthusiastically received by all Canadian cricket enthusiasts whether they be active players, administrators, coaches or supportive spectators. Towards that end we have made several changes to this Issue's design and content. We hope these changes will be sufficient to further increase your readership enjoyment. Foremost among the implemented changes is the addition of a Cover Feature on a rising Canadian cricketing talent. Small surprise that Saad Bin Zafar's “Cinderella Story” rise to international prominence, during the recently concluded Canadian hosted Global T20 Tournament, has been chosen as this Issue's cover feature.

Saad Bin Zafar Canadian Cricket's Cinderella Story

This Cricket Canada Wickets Issue also includes a “Last Month Lookback” at some of the more exciting developments that occurred during the past August month. It also looks forward to forthcoming events that are in the immediate pipeline. In keeping with our objective to be of valued assistance to the further promotion of Canadian Women's cricket, this month's provided coverage is a bit more extensive that that which was included in the Premiere Issue. There are reports on the most recent activities of the nation's female cricketers, as well as news coverage of the latest developments in the Caribbean Region's scheduled November month hosting of the ICC 2018 Women's T20 World Cup. Finally on the suggestion of Cricket Canada's President Ranjit Saini, we are pleased to announce the launching of a Wickets Candid Camera photo Competition that will feature photos of Canadian cricketing activity, submitted by photography enthusiasts from across the entire nation. The Competition is intended to further spark spectator interest in and involvement with Canadian cricket. The hope is that the featured photos will also serve to illustrate the ever-growing popularity of Canadian cricket.

Women's National Championships Scheduled After the successful completion of Global T20 which showcased some of Canada's very promising local male talent, it was time for Canada's female cricketers to str ut their stuff. Cricket Canada announcement of its first ever Women's National Championship, including a series of Cricket Matches between Women teams across Canada, was intended to provide every opportunity for them to do so. The Canada's National Women's Championship matches were scheduled to be held between teams representing a Western Canada, that would feature the best of the talent from BC and Alberta, along with two teams from Ontario.

The scheduled T20 format matches were also intended to serve as a selection tournament to pick Cricket Canada N a t i o n a l Wo m e n ' s Te a m . T h i s subsequently selected Women's National Team will represent Canada in all ICC organized Championships. With all that it has been accomplishing in terms of its establishment of competitive playing opportunities through Tournaments and Competitions for the country's elite players, Cricket Canada therefore seems to be making highly commendable progress towards the fulfillment of its Player Development Objectives.

Saad Bin Zafar Canadian Cricket's Cinderella Story! If ever there was a male version of the Cinderella fairy-tale story, Canada’s Saad Bin Zafar would certainly qualify as a most appropriate subject for such an honour. His rise from the relative obscurity of Canadian cricket to international prominence as Man of the Match for the Vancouver Knights Championship Final victory in the Toronto hosted Inaugural Season of the Mercury Canada Global T20 Championship Final, can only best be described as meteoric!

WICKETS

The 31 year old Saad Bin Zafar (born 10 November 1986) is a Pakistan-born Canadian cricketer who plays for the Canada national cricket team. As a left handed batsman and left-arm orthodox spin bowler, Zafar is sufficiently competent in both as to be regarded as a genuine all rounder.

8

Zafar's Cinderella story had a very early start. At the tender age of 10 he started playing tape ball on the streets of his hometown. Later at the age of 14 his school's sports teacher spotted Zafar and introduced

him to leather ball cricket by selecting him for the school's juniors cricket team. In 2004, having immigrated from Pakistan to Canada, he started playing club cricket for Overseas Cricket club in the Premier Division of the Toronto & District Cricket League. His consistently outstanding League performances eventually caught the attention of the Canadian national Team Selectors. Zafar made his International debut on 4 July 2008 playing against Bermuda. He looked impressive in his debut as he took 4 wickets, including the wicket of Bermuda's captain Irving Romaine who was close to scoring a century. Zafar’s Canadian cricketing career has been punctuated by several outstanding international and domestic performances, By far the most impressive of these occurred when he scored 262 not out in a 50 over game in Scarborough Cricket League’s Premier Division in August 2015.

In January 2017, having been selected as one of Canada’s representatives for the ICC Americas in the 2016–17 Caribbean Regional Super50 Championships, Zafar emerged as the team’s leading wicket taker. The following year, in January 2018, he was named in Canada's squad for the 2018 ICC World Cricket League Division Two Qualification Tournament. On 3 June 2018, Zafar was selected to play for the Vancouver Knights during the Players' Draft for the Inaugural Season of the Global T20 Canada tournament. Zafar was the second Canadian player to be selected in the Draft after Nikhil Dutta in round 9. Zafar’s performances in his Global T20 Canada outings were highly commendable, In his third outing, in the Vancouver Knights match against the Montreal Tigers his bowling figures were 3/21 off his allocated 4 overs. In his fifth match, played against the Toronto Nationals, he was again impressive with the ball, taking 2/22 in 3.5 overs, He also scored an unbeaten 12 in a 47-run match winning partnership with Chadwick Walton. In the final match of the 2018 Global T20 Canada Tournament against the West Indies B cricket team he had figures of 2 for 26 runs including a wicket maiden over. Vancouver Knights didn’t have an ideal start to the chase as Chadwick Walton, Chris Gayle and Ben Dunk fell cheaply to leave them at 22 for 3. But Zafar and Rassie van der Dussencame up with a crucial unbeaten 126-run partnership to get Knights back on track in the chase. Zafar played the role of an aggressor, dealing in regular boundaries to bring up a 32-ball fifty. He collected eight fours and three sixes in his unbeaten 48ball innings which yielded 79 runs. Zafar’s brilliant all round performance, with both ball and bat in the Championship Final was pivotal to the Vancouver Knights eventual emergeance as Title winners. Hoisted on the shoulders of his jubilant more globally prominent international teammates he was adjudged man of the match for his brilliant allround performance. A fitting conclusion to the most recent chapter or Saad Bin Zafar’s continuing Cinderella story. With further domestic and international match appearances becoming readily available opportunities will certainly exist for Saad Bin Zafar’s recently acclaimed stardom to rise even higher!

West Indies B Win Cricket Canada's T20 CricketFest! By virtue of winning all three games comfortably, West Indies B emerged winners of Cricket Canada's T20 CricketFest, played over the August 31 - September 3 weekend at the Maple Leaf Cricket Club (MLCC) ground, King City, Toronto. The rampant regional side recorded easy wins against Canada, Canada A and Toronto Bears. On a day when both Canadian teams suffered defeats, West Indies B made light work of Canada A in their opening fixture, played on Saturday September 1.

The victory was engineered by a fine

Earlier, Canada A had won the toss and surprisingly they chose to bat. They however found the going tough against accurate bowling from West Indies B, despite a brilliant 57 not out off 45 balls from R.P Singh and 31 from A. Khan. Fast medium bowler Derval Green finished with two for 22 while Greaves took the other wicket for 30 runs from his four overs. Singh and Khan added an unbeaten 65 for the fourth wicket.

Led by a dominant batting performance from opener John Campbell, who clobbered three sixes and nine fours in an unbeaten 83 off 46 balls, West Indies B rushed to 129 for one in 14.3 overs to record a comprehensive nine-wicket victory. There were two wickets each for Kyle Mayers, Jomel Warrican and Greaves. The victorious West Indies B pocketed Cdn$5 000 and a trophy for winning the T20 four-team tournament. After restricting their hosts to 146 all out in 19.5 overs, West Indies B reached the required target with two overs to spare. Quebec Blue Wins 2018 Eastern T20 Championships, 2018 The Eastern T20 Championships were concluded over the Labour Day long weekend (August 31 – September 2, 2018) amongst six teams, two from Quebec, Nova Scotia, PEI, New Brunswick and Newfoundland & Labrador. The championship format was round robin by a total of 16 T20 games. Quebec Blue topped the overall round robin standings with winning all but one tie game against Quebec Red (D/L), and in virtue of higher standings (and also in event of no finals with NS) QC Blue were deemed champions! Unexpectedly in what appeared to be against the principles of any sport, the pitches were vandalized on the night of August 31 in an effort to disrupt the tournament. However, with the sheer determination and support of the hosts, the pitches were repaired, and play resumed with an hour delay on match day. The weather played spoilsport for the finals, and a huge downpour before the final match between Quebec Blue and NS team meant the two top teams did not get a chance to compete for the Championships. Raheem Gilani & Tony Ramkissoon from QCF were awarded the MVP & Best Batsman of the tournament. Leggie and NS Skipper, Daksh Talwar was the leading wicket taker and best bowler in the championship. The 2018 Eastern Championships had its ups and downs, but with the support of all Volunteers from Eastern Provinces mainly from QCF, this turned out to be a very successful event.

“We're not here to make a fast buck, that's probably the bottom line," he said. "This isn't just about economics. This is a five-year plan and in five years we think we can start to make a difference to support USA and Canada and that's just the next two best teams in the Americas. “We want to develop cricket in the whole region, but the next two sides have the ability to break into the 16team T20 World Cup. Through CPL, playing in our Under-19 tournament, the Super50 and making sure this stadium maintains its status as an international ground can only help USA Cricket. We've been pretty vocal and been big advocates about how good the quality of the cricket was in the World Cup Qualifiers and how we need to expand the game and not shrink the game.” CWI had also played a part in helping Canada r un their Global T20 tournament in June and July.

Windies U19 Championship Exposure For Canada's Young Cricketers first match of the Championships, their August 16th encounter against Guyana U19, Kavian Naresh scored a belligerent 57 off just 55 balls. An ultra aggressive knock, which was punctuated by three massive sixes and five fours.

Canada's Men's U19 Cricketers participated in the St Vincent hosted 2018 West Indies U19 Championship. The Tour nament beg an with a 3-day competition among the Caribbean countries entrants followed by an August 16 – 29th 50-Over format in which the Canadians participated. Caribbean based representative teams from Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, the Leewards, Trinidad & Tobago and Windward participated in the Competition's 50 Over matches along with the Canadians. The Tournament was e ve n t u a l l y wo n by t h e d e f e n d i n g Champions Guyana.

Naresh scored a 57 ball 50 against the Trinidadians, which included one six and three fours. He followed this up with an even better tournament ending 71 off just 74 balls against the Windwards Islands. An innings that included two sixes and six fours. Naresh placed fourth in the Tournament's highest run scorers behind Windward Islands opening bat Kimani Melius (257 runs, 1 century & 2 fifties), Jamaica's Carlos Brown 215 runs (2 fifties) and Shian Brathwaite (Barbados) 202 runs (2 fifties).

WICKETS

Although the Canadians failed to win any of their six matches played, there were however several highly commendable performances of which they should be justifiably proud. In the Canadians very

Naresh was by far the Canadians’ best batsman during the entire tournament. His opening encounter 57 was followed by two additional and equally aggressive half centuries in Canada’s losing causes against Trinidad & Tobago on August 25 and again in their August 27 Windward Islands fixture.

Unfortunately for the Canadians there we r e n ' t a n y s i m i l a r l y o u t s t a n d i n g performances from their bowlers. Naresh's 2-24 against Guyana, as well as the respective two wickets hauls of Radhir Sanhu (2-28), Rishiv Joshi (2-42) and Gurjot Gosal (2-54) in the final Tournament match, against the Windwards islands, were the only bowling performances of note by the Canadians. Garvin Budhoo Taking Manitoba Cricket To New Heights

20

As Manitoba Cricket Association's (MCA) President, Garvin Budhoo's goal is simply to take the Province's cricket to new heights. Towards this end Budhoo, who has served as MCA's President for the last 9 years, is now actively engaged in year round promotional activities along with other equally committed members of his Board.

Upon his arrival in Canada, Budhoo was pleasantly surprised, besides himself with joy actually, to discover that not only was cricket being played in his newly adopted homeland, but also that the standard was commendably high! He therefore wasted no time getting involved and was soon playing his first Inter Provincial tournament (1981). Within a year he had earned his selection to the Canadian national team!

As a valued member of Canada's National Senior Men's team, Budhoo toured many places including Jamaica, the Bahamas, USA, Denmark, and The Netherlands. He also played in two ICC qualifiers, in England 1986 and four years later the Netherlands in 1990. Garvin Budhoo's passion for cricket started in Guyana where he learnt and developed his cricketing skills. He played in the country's top Leagues along the East Coast of Demerara as well as those in Guyana's capital city, Georgetown. His goal back then was to play for Guyana's national team and hopefully go on even further to play for the West Indies. In January of 1981 Budhoo was forced to make a life long decision as to whether he should move to Canada or remain in Guyana and pursue his cricketing goals. His final choice was for the move to Canada, which he sadly thought would also mean his having to good-bye to cricket. His international career as a Canadian national cricketer ended in 1992 with the birth of his first son. He however continued playing for Manitoba until 2009.

Garvin Budhoo also holds the belief that Canada

By his thoughts, words and deeds, Garvin Budhoo is a most wonderful example of a former national Canadian cricketer who is now actively engaged in giving back to cricket as best he can. Kudos to him for setting an example that many of his former national teammates would do well to emulate!

WICKETS

As a former player at the highest level, now turned Provincial cricket administrator, Gavin Budhoo's vision for cricket in Manitoba is to grow and develop young players from the grass roots level to feed local clubs. He strongly believes that the Manitoba Cricket Association needs to build the necessary infrastructures to accommodate the growing number of cricketers by working with local Government, City officials, Community Clubs, Schools and Sport Manitoba. He would also like to build the appropriate facilities that would allow Winnipeg to accommodate hosting international cricket matches.

has a superior youth developmental system in sports and that cricket administrators at all levels should use the resources that are readily available t o d e ve l o p f i t t e r, s t r o n g e r c r i cke t e r s. Additionally, he believes that Cricket Canada should be working assiduously towards the development and implementation of a system, which would allow the nation's elite athlete cricketers to be engaged in the sport throughout the entire calendar year. This he feels will lead to the development and identification of quality home g rown players who can compete favourably at the highest international levels.

All foreign players were placed in a pool from which they were drafted. 4 teams contested the tournament playing each other in two rounds of matches. Financial Planning Prudence for Professional Athletes (Cricketers) Most professional athletes, in this case cricketers, should have a financial plan. It will provide a general road map and a transpiring guide of how your money flows and where it goes. The amount of playing time a young cricketer will have depends on many factors like skill level, where you play and the kind of contracts you are able to secure during your top form playing years. The pursuit of financial independence will have to be revised many times as the unique lifestyle, income situation and residential circumstances of a professional athlete change.

WICKETS

You will have to be cognisant of your salary income and have a cash management system to help you budget, spend, save and invest concurrently. Since you will have a life outside your professional sport of Cricket, it is important you put aside meaningful investments for the transitional years ahead when your career is over, and you willingly put away the bat and gloves, so to speak. You will transition some of your earnings during your most productive years, and hence highest earning contract years, to some retirement investments for your future.

24

In professional sports, your career isn't going to be very long, perhaps eight to twelve years. You have to realize that you

need to contrast that to someone working 30 to 40 years. You need to take those compressed working years and plan for it to last 40 to 50 years. Athletes will earn the most money early in their career. Instead of earning more as you age, it's usually the reverse. This is known as the reverse earning curve, as professional athletes earn the most money at a younger age, when you have limited real-life experience to rely on when making financial decisions. There have been numerous headlines about athletes and celebrities who mismanage their finances and blow through millions of dollars:

“60% of NBA players go broke within five years of departing the league” Toronto Star, 2008 “78% of former NFL players experience financial distress two years after retirement” – Sports Illustrated, 2009

It's your money – own it. The simple t r u t h i s, yo u wo n ' t h ave t h e opportunity to make money like this again.

quality of your future depends on the choices and decisions you make during those peak earning periods and how wisely you invest.

“What kind of investment program is appropriate?” is a question on everyone's mind. WICKETS

It depends on where you are in your career, your financial goals and the type of contracts you have – all of these will factor in and influence the asset mix, investment selection and time horizon considerations. The key is to be mindful of your money and your earning potential; not to overextend or overspend yourself. The big money contract does not last forever. You have to be smart, stick to a budget, and plan for the future. The

England To Play Maiden Test In St Lucia During 2019 Tour

England will play their first Test match in St Lucia as part of a two-month tour of the Caribbean early next year. The other two venues for the threematch Test series, which is the first part of the trip, are Barbados and Antigua. England's previous Test series in the Caribbean finished 1-1 after West Indies levelled the series in Barbados following England's win in Grenada. A five-match one-day series will follow with matches in Barbados, Grenada and St Lucia before the tour wraps up with three T20s which also includes a match at the Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium.

WICKETS

England arrive in Barbados on January 11 and have one four-day tour match penciled in ahead of the opening Test on January 23.

A tour by England remains very important for the West Indies board because of the number of travelling supporters they are likely to bring. This is the first time all three formats have been played on the same tour since 2009.

Warrican played the last of his four Tests in January 2016, but was handed a redball contract by Cricket West Indies in January this year, indicating that he remained very much part of their plans. Warrican has spent the last two months with the West Indies A team, playing England Lions and India A in England. While his numbers from those games are not particularly striking, he did cause the touring Sri Lankans issues in May, claiming 4 for 81 in a warm-up game in Tarouba. In India, he will offer West Indies a second-specialist spin option behind legspinner Devendra Bishoo. Alzarri Joseph, the 21-year old fast bowler, is also set to return to Test cricket after more than a year. Joseph broke into the West Indies side as a 19-year-old in 2016 and has since played six Tests, the last of which was last August in England. Joseph is returning from a stress fracture in his back, which he picked up in New Zealand in December. He returned to limited-overs cricket in the preceding series at home, against Bangladesh, and was picked in the squad for the second Test of that series. He, however, did not play,

making this his first chance at long-form cricket since the injury. Batsman Sunil Ambris is also back for his first Test of the year, having missed out recently due to injury, according to West Indies' chairman of selectors Courtney Brown. It is not clear what the injury was. Ambris had fractured his left forearm during the series against New Zealand last December - his debut series, where he was hit-wicket twice in two games - but it was believed that he had recovered from that injury ahead of West Indies' home-summer series against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Jahmar Hamilton, the uncapped wicketkeeperbatsman, also made the 15. Hamilton was picked for the home Tests against Sri Lanka but didn't get a game. In India, he will provide back-up with the gloves to Shane Dowrich. West Indies Test squad Jason Holder (capt), Sunil Ambris, Devendra Bishoo, Kraigg Brathwaite, Roston Chase, Shane Dowrich (wk), Shannon Gabriel, Jahmar Hamilton (wk), Shimron Hetmyer, Shai Hope, Alzarri Joseph, Keemo Paul, Kieran Powell, Kemar Roach, Jomel Warrican Batsman Devon Smith, who made a return this season against Sri Lanka after three years out of the team, and fast bowler Miguel Cummins are the only two to miss out from the squad that played the Bangladesh series. Browne said: "The panel congratulates Jason Holder and his team on the excellent performance against Bangladesh. As the team embarks on a tough tour of India, the successes against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh should hold them in good stead. The panel welcomes back Sunil Ambris, who missed the last couple of series due to injury, along with Jomel Warrican, who adds a second spin-bowling option to the attack.

The two Tests in India will be followed by five ODIs and three T20I.

WICKETS

While West Indies are coming off a convincing 2-0 series win against Bangladesh and a drawn series against Sri Lanka, they have struggled significantly against their upcoming opponents. Their last Test win against India came in Kingston in 2002, while their last Test success in India was a 243-run win in Mohali in 1994.
