SALVAPEJE SALVAPEJE WORKSHOPS WORKSHOPS ARE HELD IN PUERTO RICO ARE HELD IN PUERTO RICO

Salvapeje workshops are on fire!

What is a descending device–known as Salvapeje, which is the name given to the device by the fishing community in Puerto Rico how to use it, its benefits, how to obtain it, and how to build one at home are some of the topics covered in these workshops.

“Commercial and recreational fishers, as well as head boats or charter boats operators, are among the participants of these workshops. We have seen enthusiasm in the workshops. Participants have shared their ideas on how to make the device at home utilizing fishing equipment that they no longer use. The workshops have also fostered interest in protecting undersized, regulated, or juvenile species, thus nurturing a sense of conservation and care for marine species,” said Wilson Santiago Soler, Fisheries Liaison Officer in Puerto Rico

CFMC: How has your experience been at the Salvapeje workshops?

Nelson: “What has most captured my attention during these workshops is the fishing community's interest in participating and learning how to use the Salvapeje. There's a genuine commitment to releasing and protecting managed species.”

CFMC: What are your recommendations for building this device at home?

Nelson: “They should use the creativity that we fishers naturally possess. I encourage them to look for alternatives to fishing gear that they no longer use. This way, they are discovering countless ways to build it.”

CFMC: How has your experience been in the Salvapeje workshops?

Nelson: “The interaction with the fishers has been very good, and we've exchanged some great ideas about how we can build it at home at a low cost. I appreciate the opportunity they've given me to be with fishers around Puerto Rico, exchange ideas, and listen to their concerns.”
