Every part counts We understand that the equipment, engineering solutions and services that we deliver to the offshore industry are part of something bigger; not only are they part of a vessel or offshore installation and as such must be traceable, reliable and safe, but they are part of a business. It is our responsibility to do everything possible to make our part count towards the success of that business.

If we do not aim for operators to gain the most from their equipment, in terms of technological capabilities, reliability, safety and efficiency, then we know that this will negatively impact profitability.

We specialise in maximising a customer’s return on investment. We do this through the delivery of customer-driven, cutting-edge technology and by optimising the ongoing performance of systems, potentially through retrofits and modernisations, or through providing market-leading maintenance services, from planned agreements to emergency rapid response.

acGregor has won its third Offshore Support Journal (OSJ) Innovation of the Year Award, announced at OSJ’s annual conference and awards event in London, UK, on 8 February 2017. This year’s entry was won by the MacGregor 3D Motion

Compensator (3DMC); a retrofit device designed to enhance the load-handling precision of offshore cranes (page 7).

MacGregor won the same award in 2014 for its three-axis motion-compensated crane and in 2012 for its Chain Wheel Manipulator.

Proven technology specified for

first floating wind farm

T

he world’s first floating offshore wind farm, Statoil’s Hywind pilot park in Scotland, UK, is entering its final phase of construction. It will feature Pusnes substructure connection mooring systems from MacGregor, which have been delivered and will be installed when the hulls are complete.

Hywind is designed to demonstrate cost-efficient solutions that will enable the commercial capture of wind energy in harsh environments.

MacGregor was contracted to deliver a Pusnes substructure mooring connection system to each of the pilot project’s five new 6MW floating wind turbines. The ballast-stabilised turbine structures will each be equipped with a three-point mooring system employing site-specific anchors.

ur aim is to do the simple things right. Customers rely on our responsiveness and the global nature of our service business to make sure that when they need a part, it is available, when they need a repair, we can carry it out and when they have planned work on board a vessel, it will happen as agreed.

We are leaders in our business, outsmarting and out-competing our competitors every day, but my job is to make sure that we get even better. If we can be the best in adapting to the changes that the digitalised future brings, we have a massive opportunity to become the undisputed

reference point for the whole maritime service industry. This is our aim.

Services that can save money Earlier this year, we introduced new, simplified planned service agreements that will save customers’ money and reduce their maintenance administration burden.

Since 2004, we have offered MacGregor Onboard Care (MOC) planned maintenance agreements, but market conditions have changed a great deal since then. There is an industry-wide shift towards new technologies and processes designed to increase efficiency and drive down operational costs. Our latest planned service

arrangements have been developed to support these changes and provide simpler and even more cost-effective cover.

We know that efficient ongoing service is key to operational success and we make this commitment with every equipment delivery. Our new service agreements are an extension of this commitment; they provide significant savings on spare parts as well as fixed rates that make budgeting simple and predictable. We have also simplified our documentation, clarified the cost-savings available to our customers and we handle all maintenance administration.

MOC has been a very successful venture; more than 1,800 vessels have equipment covered by a traditional MOC contract. So we understand that customers appreciate the benefits of planned maintenance contracts. However, again, we cannot assume that there is not room for improvement. Our new agreements build on customer feedback and our experience with MOC and will now replace MacGregor’s current MOC portfolio.

Round-the-clock response for offshore operations We also offer additional support to the offshore industry, as we know that when equipment fails in remote, high-value offshore operations, normal service must be resumed as quickly as possible.

A prolonged malfunction of a subsea crane could cost the owner or the end customer millions and while the direct costs of a high-profile delay can be easily quantified, the longer-term damage to a company’s reputation may be even more serious.

New service agreements: designed to meet your needs

T

he new service agreements, offered by the MacGregor Global Lifecycle Support division, provide three levels of cover: inspection only, inspection and maintenance, and inspection, maintenance and repair.

Inspection agreement: This provides a fixed-rate inspection schedule for between one and five years and includes all inspection and travel costs.

Spare parts required during the agreement will be supplied at preferential rates. A full report including safety and critical action analysis will be provided following each inspection visit.

The name ‘OnWatch’ perfectly describes the level of round-the-clock vigilance and responsiveness that the service offers, which is immediate operational technical support via a secure online remote diagnostic solution.

A perfect pair MacGregor’s new service agreements are designed to work perfectly alongside OnWatch. The agreements ensure that equipment is maintained in good order, minimising the risk of accidents and downtime. However, as it is impossible to entirely eliminate the chance of a breakdown, OnWatch provides immediate support.

In the event of a failure, which might be the result of human error, component malfunction, or environmental conditions, for example a lightning strike, OnWatch

Standard agreement: This includes a fixed-rate inspection and maintenance schedule for between one and five years. All travel, labour and consumable parts needed to carry out a fixed preventative maintenance programme are covered by this agreement. Spare parts required during the agreement will be supplied at preferential rates. Crew training can also be included in the agreement. Comprehensive agreement: This provides the highest level of cover. All

calls on the services of specialists. These specialists are on call 24/7. Using a secure satellite connection, the team downloads comprehensive historic and on-line data about your crane, including operational history, alarm logs, hydraulic pressure and flow logs. They guide the ship’s crew in determining the source of the problem and then identify the action required and the necessary parts. If, as recommended, the vessel carries a strategic spare parts kit, most problems can be addressed immediately by the vessel’s crew, in consultation with the OnWatch specialists.

If the required parts are not on board, MacGregor will dispatch an engineer with the correct parts to rendezvous with the vessel at sea or in port, where the engineer will rapidly install the new parts and complete the repair without having to spend any time on fault-finding.

Virtual reality training drives efficiency and safety advances MacGregor’s new training academy specialises in advanced simulation techniques, offering customers a risk-free environment to learn

roper operator training increases equipment familiarity and skill in routine operations and emergencies, leading to improved safety and efficient cost-effective deployment. Some years ago, MacGregor started to invest in simulators as it realised that this type of training enabled operators to gain more experience in a few days than they would encounter in weeks of ‘live action’ training, including a range of operating scenarios.

“Virtual reality technology has improved dramatically in more recent years,” says Geir Roland, Director Advanced Offshore Solutions, Global Lifecycle Support at MacGregor. In line with these developments, MacGregor has opened a training academy for customers

specialising in advanced simulation techniques. The academy has a purposebuilt virtual reality (VR) showroom and is part of a brand new MacGregor facility in Arendal, Norway. MacGregor can also offer portable VR training programmes.

“The academy provides a risk-free environment where the users learn how to make real-time, complex manoeuvres safer and more efficient,” Mr Roland continues.

“The simulation and training software we use has been developed by our experts and is based on their expertise and experience in the field. We believe this is unique on the market.”

Advanced simulation platforms The academy also showcases simulations of MacGregor products in action and demonstrates technical challenges. One piece of software that it uses is C-HOW, which is a simulation platform that MacGregor developed for customers to run particular equipment through various simulated conditions and operations.

At a basic level, C-HOW can be used as an interactive calculation tool, feeding in parameters such as loads, lifting radii and wave accelerations to generate the required data. At the other end of the scale C-HOW can be incorporated into

immersive training hardware, such as advanced crane simulations.

Simulation is all about getting access to realistic information relating to complex interactions so that better decisions can be made and skills can be attained long before risk becomes a factor.

Immersive training programmes “Today’s crews can participate in fullyimmersive training programmes,” says Jan Finckenhagen, Manager MacGregor Academy. “This will reduce the likelihood of causing injury to personnel or damage to equipment because they have already tried and tested it. Our aim is to help customers use their MacGregor equipment safely and efficiently.

“You can also explore restricted, dangerous areas that you would not normally be allowed to enter. This provides otherwise unobtainable perspectives on specific operations, which can prove very useful in the real world.”

All simulation training for MacGregor offshore cranes, offshore mooring and loading systems, as well as deck machinery and steering gear is now located in Arendal. MacGregor expects to train between 70 and 100 people at its new academy every year.

Retrofits

pave the way to a golden advantage Necessity is the mother of invention and when times are tough, brilliant minds work even harder to find solutions; MacGregor believes that retrofits can offer a lifeline to operators by delivering cost-effective commercial advantages

T

oday’s offshore market is a far cry from that of a few years ago. Achieving growth is proving extremely challenging and operators are working harder than ever to maintain their positions in the market.

However, MacGregor believes that retrofits are one way that these operators could excel; they can dramatically improve the technological capabilities of an original piece of equipment and can do so at a competitive price.

“We recognise that operators need to keep advancing, but economically, this might not be possible. This is why we have developed a number of retrofit options for use in the offshore industry,” says Geir Roland, Director of Advanced Offshore Solutions, Global Lifecycle Support, MacGregor. “These have focused around our subsea cranes and the possible step-change in capabilities is staggering. Some retrofit options can even be shared amongst a fleet, making them work smarter and better for their owners; a very important attribute in these times.”

Three great examples MacGregor retrofit options for its subsea cranes include replacing steel wire rope with a high-performance fibre-rope upgrade, a 3D Motion Compensator (3DMC) device and a new active-heave compensation system for offshore ship-to-ship load transfers.

The 3DMC and ship-to-ship compensator are options available for new cranes, but are also perfectly designed to be retrofitted. For operators wanting an advanced fibre-rope crane and all the advantages that it offers from the outset, MacGregor offers its FibreTrac crane, which was introduced to the market last year.

“All of these options, whether employed as retrofits or delivered with a new crane, are designed to improve operational efficiency and capabilities and all of them are game-changers,” he adds.

By employing MacGregor fibrerope technology, a crane is able to use its full lifting capacity at maximum depths, so a smaller crane and vessel can be used for more assignments

Game-changing capabilities MacGregor fibre-rope retrofits are available for all MacGregor subsea cranes.

The modular upgrade replaces the crane’s original steel wire rope with high-performance synthetic fibre rope, using the same advanced technology as the MacGregor FibreTrac crane.

The retrofit combines MacGregor’s proven offshore crane technology with the fibre-rope tensioning technology perfected

by Parkburn Precision Handling Systems.

The great advantage of fibre rope, when used in this context, is that it weighs virtually nothing in water, so regardless of the length of rope paid out, it does not add anything to the load experienced by the crane. This is in complete contrast to wire rope, where the increasing weight of wire paid out progressively and seriously limits the load permissible in relation to depth.

By employing this fibre-rope technology, a crane is able to use its full lifting capacity at maximum depths, so a smaller crane and vessel can be used for more assignments. Effectively, a 150-tonne fibrerope crane will be able to replace a 250tonne wire-rope crane when lifting loads

at depths of 3,000m and it can continue to lift loads at even greater depths, allowing these vessels to bid on a wider range of contracts.

The retrofit system is designed in modules for rapid installation. It includes a deep water capstan traction device, delivered in partnership with Parkburn Precision Handling Systems, which replaces the crane’s original main winch and overcomes the problems traditionally associated with handling fibre rope. The system also includes a low tension fibrerope storage drum.

The fibre-rope can be inspected for wear, internally and externally. The ability to splice in new sections adds great flexibility to the system. Also unlike wire rope, fibre rope does not require lubrication, eliminating a source of pollution.

Fibre-rope cranes are continuously connected to a monitoring system, which delivers real-time data used to detect conditions that could lead to a breakdown.

MacGregor also distributes operational parameters to customers, ensuring that the equipment works to its highest potential.

Enhanced load-handling precision MacGregor 3D Motion Compensators (3DMC) are cost-effective, flexible retrofit devices, designed to enhance the loadhandling precision of offshore cranes even in extreme sea states. They allow a shipowner to expand the load-handling capabilities of a crane far beyond its original limitations. This means that the crane, and therefore the vessel, can be used for more

assignments and owners will be able to bid on a wider range of contracts.

MacGregor’s standard active heavecompensation (AHC), supplied through a crane’s winch, compensates for a vessel’s vertical movements. However, when very accurate load positioning is required, the 3DMC is a great new option.

The 3DMC can be fitted to the knuckle jib of a number of new or existing MacGregor subsea cranes. It compensates for the roll, pitch and heave motions of the vessel to minimise any movement of the load in relation to a fixed point in space.

During operations requiring a greater degree of precision than that available from the standard crane, such as transferring equipment to or from offshore wind turbine structures or any small fixed platform, the operator can choose to use the 3DMC jib.

The 3DMC has been designed for easy installation and makes use of the existing hydraulic power unit and control system of the crane. The 3DMC/crane interface

is designed so that the unit can be swiftly mobilised to a crane with the relevant fittings. This allows the 3DMC to be shared within a fleet.

When not required, the 3DMC simply remains fixed to the side of the crane’s knuckle jib allowing normal lifting operations using the main and whip winches.

Wider load transfer windows MacGregor’s ship-to-ship compensation system is the latest arrival in its retrofit range and can be used with other MacGregor crane advances. They offer owners substantially larger operating windows, as well as safer, faster load transfers.

MacGregor understands the complexity of ship-to-ship load transfers and the limitations imposed by unpredictable, non-synchronised movements in a seaway.

the relative movements of the vessels.

The new compensation system employs a motion reference unit on the deck of the secondary vessel. This transmits motion data to the crane on the primary vessel via a high-speed redundant wireless link.

Combining motion data from both vessels, the system calculates and applies the winch compensation necessary to minimise hook movement at the load-handling zone on the secondary vessel.

The system features precise tension and position control for accurate load hookon, pick-up, landing and hook-off. Safety is much improved for the deck crew working in the load-handling zone. Load pick-up and landing is precise, fast and smooth.

It allows the operator to employ a less conservative approach to calculating the maximum load that can be safely handled in any given sea state.

This robustly-tested system has been developed from first-generation MacGregor technology initially employed by the US Navy in 2009 on a ramp transfer system.

n September last year, MacGregor made the strategic decision to acquire majority shares in the small, innovative Scottish company, Flintstone Technology Ltd. The move enables MacGregor to offer an even greater range of capabilities, primarily within the mooring and fluid-handling sectors.

“Offshore operators and field owners are looking for cost and weight-optimised technologies in order to be more efficient,” says Høye Høyesen, Vice President, MacGregor Advanced Offshore Solutions.

“We understand that these are crucial elements in today’s market.”

Customer-driven capabilities “Sometimes we offer customers products that can deliver capabilities far beyond what they thought were possible and sometimes operators approach us and explain what they would like to achieve, but the technology simply does not exist yet to make this possible,” continues Mr

Høyesen. “At this point, we can either embark on developing technology especially for the customer, which we have done many times in the past, or we search the market for those hidden gems, which is exactly what Flintstone is. It has seen gaps in the market where offshore operators are seeking new or more advanced capabilities and has invested in highly-specialised technology that can make these operational wishes a reality.

“Developments include products that reduce offshore installation times, bring weight savings, or contribute to safer operations.”

Traditionally, mooring systems have been delivered as sets of components rather than as systems with an emphasis on their entire lifeycle. “By taking into account all aspects of a system; from installation and re-tensioning in-service, to the need to change mooring lines, we have been able to substantially reduce both the capital expenditure and the system’s on going running costs through the introduction of key innovations,” says Andrew Clayson, Managing Director, Flintstone Technology.

and the subsea tensioner; both are costeffective and practical.”

The pull-through connector has successfully been installed on the Enquestoperated floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel, Kraken and Statoil’s FPSO, Mariner, both in use since 2015.

Wider portfolios bring added value Dundee-based Flintstone, which was established in 2012, sees a lot of potential from teaming-up with MacGregor. It will gain all the advantages offered as part of a larger organisation and Flintstone’s engineering solutions complement MacGregor’s existing portfolio in the offshore segment and also expands it into new market areas.
