successful bid to host the Olympic Games in 1956, interest and momentum was building as sport was viewed as a vital part of a student’s life at Carey.

Carey’s outstanding reputation as one of Australia’s leading independent schools can, in part, be attributed to our magnificent sporting history. For thousands of past and current students, school sport has been at the heart of a Carey education – as our first Headmaster, Harold Steele, said back in 1923:

The late 1950s would prove to be landmarks in Carey’s sporting history. An invitation received in November 1957 to join the APS was accepted by the Headmaster Stuart Hickman, who acknowledged that it represented ’a fine tribute to the School’. APS membership was seen as the ‘pinnacle’ of recognition within independent schools.

’We will teach our boys to live truthfully, nobly, and graciously. A boy’s body must be healthy and well developed if he is to have within him a healthy mind and moral tone.’ From these humble beginnings in 1923, where boys could choose to play football, tennis, cricket and athletics, to today, where over 2000 boys and girls from Years 5 to 12 can participate in over 30 different sports and activities… we’ve come a long way!

The early years Carey joined the Schools Association of Victoria (SAV) in 1923 and won the athletics carnival soon thereafter. Our first sports star was Kinglsey Rees, who captained the First XVIII Football and First XI Cricket Teams, as well as being a prominent athlete and swimmer. An invitation to join the AGSV came in 1927, and we were soon competing with schools such as Brighton, Caulfield, Haileybury and Camberwell. However, with an enrolment of only 222 boys, Carey was largely uncompetitive in those early years, suffering heavy losses in all sports. It wasn’t until 1936 that Carey celebrated its first AGSV Premiership, in athletics, followed by football flags in 1940, 1942 and 1943. Coached by the legendary Charles ’Bunny’ Gramlick, Carey were no longer the easybeats of the AGSV. Fuelled by Melbourne’s

Bulleen and our APS affiliation

With APS membership came the need to expand, and by the end of 1958, Eric Dunshea suggested the School buy land elsewhere to create its own sporting facilities. He found 33 acres in Bulleen and, in 1959, the School purchased the site for £21,515. When Carey’s Bulleen Sports Complex opened in October 1962, it provided a full-sized football oval, two smaller ovals, an Olympic-standard athletics track, two viewing stands and the Gadsden Pavilion. Soon after the opening, Carey was again celebrating on-field success, when, in 1963 our First XI Cricket team won our first APS Premiership. This was followed in 1966 when Carey won its first and only APS athletics title.

You go girl! The introduction of girls to Carey in 1979 is nominated by the Carey community as the most momentous change in our school’s rich history. The welcome arrival of girls opened our sporting program to a new horizon. Although competition was hard to find in the early years, our girls were keen, often playing in the boys’ teams with great success. In 1983, Carey joined the Eastern Suburbs Association (ESA) and we soon became the dominant force in the competition, winning multiple titles before girls officially joined the APS competition in the mid-1980s in rowing and Carey sport – we love it!

athletics. By 1995, our girls were playing in the APS in every mainstream sport, including badminton, basketball, cross country, diving, hockey, netball, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis and volleyball.

More sports, more opportunities The 1990s witnessed an expansion in the opportunities for Carey students in sport. At this time, competition amongst fellow schools was fierce and the natural alignment of girls and boys competing in stand-alone sports forged our reputation as a co-educational powerhouse in the APS. The boys won back-to-back Head of the River titles in 1995 and 1996 along with our first premiership in boys’ football in 1999. The girls continued to dominate, particularly in basketball, where consecutive premierships were won from 1995 to 2000. A further important step came in 1999 with the girls’ APS competition merging with the AGSV to form a 12-school competition that remains to this day.

The premiership years: 2000–23 The foundations built in the 1990s, where all students were encouraged to participate, have continued in the 21st century. Carey has enjoyed remarkable success, winning a combined 54 APS (boys) and APS/AGSV (girls) premierships since 2005. Expert coaches in all sports, well administered by an outstanding group of talented staff at state-of-the-art facilities, ensure students have every opportunity to shine. Arguably, Carey’s most successful single sporting day in First Team sport came on Saturday 3 August 2019, at Carey Bulleen, where Carey won both the Girls and Boys Soccer Premierships, as well as the Boys Football title, in front of a crowd of over 4000! The Girls Netball and Hockey Teams experienced narrow losses on that same day that saw them each celebrated as runnersup. It was a remarkable day with over 80 students playing in these key matches.

Sporting success for Carey students has moved beyond our playing fields for many students in their pursuits after their school years. Carey is proud of our vast array of Olympians and world, national and state champions across a diverse range of sports. Our five alumni who have captained Australian teams – Graham Yallop, James Tomkins, Meg Lanning, Peter Robinson and David Wansbrough – adorn the Captains Scoreboard at Carey Bulleen. Ahmed Kelly, paralympic swimmer and former Hickman House Captain, has competed in the last three Paralympic Games in 2012, 2016 and 2020, and we have no fewer than 19 former Carey students currently playing in the AFL men’s and women’s competitions – including the 2023 AFL Premiership Team Captain, Darcy Moore! Notwithstanding our impressive list of sporting greats, for most, the opportunity to wear the black, gold and blue on Saturdays has, and will continue to be, a treasured gift of a Carey education. Sport at Carey today sits perfectly within the School’s core values of Care, Respect and Growth. Our program today allows students to choose both competitive and recreational pathways in over 30 different activities, including kayaking, dance, yoga, golf, snowsports, fencing, mountain bike riding and fitness club, which compliment the traditional APS/AGSV offerings. Harold Steele’s cries in 1923 for a ’healthy body and mind’ have certainly rung true over the last 100 years. Ian Cohen (1984) Co-Host

Tiffany Cherry graduated from Carey in 1989 knowing that her career would be in sport. She pursued athletics and was an accomplished national hurdler and Australian representative in the 1999 World Triathlon Championships.

Along with his three brothers, Ian Cohen attended Carey as a student, graduating in 1984. He continued his connection with the School by playing over 100 games for the Old Carey Football Club. Since 2013, Ian has also been a Carey parent.

Tiffany then forged for herself an impressive career in sports broadcasting, including as the AFL’s first ever female boundary rider on Fox Footy. She has also worked for ESPN, Seven News and Richmond Football Club, as well as hosting the coverage of multiple events including the Olympic and Commonwealth Games.

In his 25-year career, Ian has become a renowned and award-winning sports broadcaster, writer and journalist, having reported on multiple sports and major international events including the Olympic and Commonwealth Games.

Tiffany is the Co-Founder of Cherry Picked Productions and currently works as Head of Women and Girls Engagement at Golf Australia.

Ian is also the Founder and Managing Director of Cozalive Media, a media, communications and film company.

Tamsyn Manou (Lewis) Roving Reporter We are very fortunate to be able to call Australian Olympic athlete Tamsyn Manou our current Head Coach of the Carey Athletics Team. Tamsyn is a Champion Australian track athlete, having won 18 Australian championships across the 400m, 800m and 400m hurdle events. Tamsyn is also a three-time Olympian, representing Australia at the 2000, 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games and numerous Commonwealth Games, where she earned three gold medals. Tamsyn began her media career on Triple M in 2005 and has since presented for various radio and television programs, including co-presenting the athletics track events for the 2016 and 2021 Olympic Games.

Richard Thomas (1992) Performer Richard comes from a Carey family through and through. Commencing at Carey in Year 7 in 1987, Carey musicals soon became a big part of Richard’s life as he was cast as Oliver Twist in Oliver! that year. Richard performed in musicals every year he attended Carey. Since leaving Carey, Richard has performed lead roles in The Secret Garden (1999), Sweet Charity (1999), Follies (2000), Les Misérables (2000 and 2018), Chicago (2002), The Producers (2007), The Phantom of the Opera (2013), Mary Poppins (2016) and The Sound of Music (2023). On top of these incredible roles, let’s not forget Richard’s magnificent performance in our very own Centenary Musicals Through the Years Concert earlier this year!
