A significant and meaningful impact

Even in these most challenging times, Carey families have come together and demonstrated their support for each other, our students and the community. We are grateful for this show of strength, and this will feature as the theme of the 2020 Impact of Giving report.

A highlight has been the outstanding support for the Carey Student Fee Support Fund which has meant that we have been able to support students whose families experienced financial hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite the extraordinary circumstances of 2020, a number of generous families were able to support the Carey Community Scholarship, an access and equity scholarship, which supports students who would otherwise not be able to attend Carey due to disadvantage or financial need. In this report we tell the story of Kyizom Tenzin (2018), a Tibetan refugee, who recently attended and thrived at Carey due to our community scholarship program.

Although the Fund and the Scholarship were our key priorities this year, we sincerely appreciate our community’s support for additional projects, such as an innovative science communications prize for our Year 11 students and a music bursary program which will commence in 2021 to celebrate the life of a much-loved Carey parent, Karen Murray.

I am proud to say that above all, this report illustrates the significant and meaningful impact that philanthropy can have on improving the lives of our students.

Supporting Carey students through the pandemic Our heartfelt thanks to the many families who generously donated to the Carey Student Fee Support Fund throughout the year to assist families facing financial hardship due to the pandemic. As a result of your generosity, we were able to provide immediate fee assistance to enable several students to continue their education throughout 2020 and avoid the stress of changing schools at a very challenging time.

The response from our community was extraordinary, with the Fund attracting over half of all gifts received this year.

Every cent of the Fund was allocated this year, providing immediate relief to families who applied for support.

This Fund complements a range of other initiatives provided by the School to support our students and families during the pandemic. These included a fee rebate in the third and fourth terms of 2020, no increase on school fees for 2021 and the introduction of the Carey Family Business Directory.

From Tibet to Carey, the promise of a bright future Kyizom (Kym) Tenzin (2018), who was a recipient of our Carey Community Scholarship, was born in an Indian refugee camp following the Chinese annexation of Tibet.

‘When my youngest sister was born, she had a lymphatic malformation and the local hospitals couldn’t treat her. We were very fortunate to have met Australian humanitarian worker Moira Kelly AO, who arranged medical treatment in Australia and settled us in primary and secondary schools.

‘Together with her son Ahmed Kelly, who was attending our school at the time, Moira helped to secure me a scholarship to study at Carey.

‘The friendships I made at Carey helped me build my confidence inside and outside the classroom. I felt empowered to take advantage of opportunities I would not have had the exposure to, or ability to participate in otherwise.

Your generous ongoing support for the Carey Community Scholarship, is greatly appreciated.

‘I am now undertaking a Bachelor of Science and hope to later specialise in nursing to complement my experience working with Aunty Moira and help children living with a disability.’

Every scholarship funded through this program will enable a recipient to take advantage of the opportunities provided

by Carey to fulfil their potential and make a difference in the lives of others.

The cornerstone of our community Our parent and alumni associations are essential to the success of our school, volunteering countless hours to support our students, teachers and families. We are very grateful and fortunate to have this support.

The Junior School Parents Association (JSPA) represents an inspiring collective of parents working together to uphold a strong and vibrant community. The JSPA has supported a range of important projects for our students along with other charitable causes.

‘The impact of recent events has challenged our community in different ways and, as an association, we take pride in our ability to assist our families when they need us most,’ explained 2021 JSPA President, Chrissy Margaritis.

‘Despite limited opportunities for fundraising this year, the JSPA has donated almost $10,000 to the Carey Student Fee Support Fund, Carey Care Committee, Indigenous Literacy Foundation, World Vision Child Sponsorship and for an outdoor table tennis table for our students.’

‘When we were asked by the JSPA what project we would most like, the decision was easy as a second table tennis table was at the top of our list,’ said Grace Thompson, School Captain and SRC Leader. ‘Two tables allow multiple year levels to play, more students to be included and fun competitions between teams.’

A tribute to a community champion In November last year, we were deeply saddened by the loss of Karen Murray, a beloved Carey parent and a true advocate and champion for our music students. We extend our sincere condolences to her family.

‘Karen was such a cheerleader for the performing arts at Carey and we miss her,’ said Claire Tetaz, President of Friends of Carey Music.

‘As a committee we sought to provide a fitting dedication to her, and we are delighted to announce the Karen Murray Music Bursary for vocalists.’

The bursary will be awarded annually and administered by our Performing Arts team.

‘Karen was such a cheerleader for the performing arts at Carey and we miss her.’

Nick Mulder, Head of Performing Arts, thanked Friends of Carey Music for creating and funding this enduring recognition of Karen Murray and her significant contribution to Carey.

‘The bursary will serve as a wonderful tribute to Karen and I know she would welcome the encouragement and validation that it will provide for our vocalists.’

Celebrating a family’s love for music Music has a special place in the hearts of generations of Carey families. The Doig family exemplify this passion, and we are delighted to recognise a bequest and commemorate the lives of Dr William and Mrs Doris Doig by naming a music studio in our new Middle School on their behalf.

‘Our love for music started at Carey. We all learned piano and our late mother had a keen interest. This gift acknowledges the excellence of education provided by Carey and will hopefully assist the ongoing musical education of future students.’ – William and Doris’s sons, Stephen (1972), David (1974) and Rowan Doig (1977).

Prized scientific ideas In today’s world, it is more important than ever to be able to communicate accurate and relevant science in a way that people understand and are compelled to act on.

We were therefore thrilled to have the generous support of Old Carey Grammarian Professor Jonathan Serpell (1973) to launch a new three-minute thesis competition, encouraging our Year 11 students to breakdown complex science into something everyone can understand.

We received a diverse range of interesting topics, from bioengineered blood to sleep deprivation to clean water initiatives – but ultimately, the winner of the inaugural Serpell Science Communications Prize was Kathy Xing: ‘I chose my topic of genetically modified cotton, as it allowed me to talk about the effects of the cotton industry that aren’t often discussed. I want to raise awareness of the environmental challenges in the fashion industry which is a topic I’m passionate about,’ Kathy said.

‘To me, science is the way of the future and can allow us to make the world a better place.’

Professor Serpell was delighted with the entries received. ‘They had excellent content, clarity of scientific presentation and advanced skills in public speaking.

‘Having enormously benefitted from my 12 years at Carey, finishing in 1973, it is a great pleasure to be able to give back to the school that provided me with a wonderful education and start in life.’

Creative learning

In the quiet months of lockdown, a small transformation was underway in our iconic Donvale campus library.

Funded by donations to the Library Fund from 2019 Community Giving, a new makerspace has been built to ‘create an innovative learning space that will allow students to explore, collaborate and plan solutions to real-world problems,’ explained Rachael Bodey, eLearning Advisor.

‘The custom-built area has been specifically designed for learners to immerse themselves in the design.

Purpose-built shelving houses easily accessible materials, including technology equipment, recycled materials and craft supplies.

‘This cross-curricular makerspace is where students will be presented with a complicated problem and use engineering, programming and computational thinking to find a solution.’

Head of Carey Donvale, Steve Wilson, thanked our generous supporters for creating this amazing new resource for our Junior School students.

‘Our library has always been a great place for learning, exploration and imagination. This new makerspace will be a fantastic new addition, combining technology and creativity to build problem solving skills and collaborative learning.’
