Our international students are given the confidence to succeed
My name is Alanna. I was born in Hangzhou, China. I came to Australia when I was in Year 4 and started at Carey in Year 10. Coming to Carey has shaped me into a more courageous and confident individual, as I had to overcome language barriers and other challenges along the way. I grew up within an Australian education system however, my family members could not communicate fluently in English. As a result, Chinese is my first language, even though I am more used to writing and thinking in English. This meant that I developed little confidence in speaking English and was afraid to contribute or ask questions in class. Frightened of being ignored or misunderstood, the language barrier created a significant burden in my learning journey. This selfconsciousness got me nowhere, and I stayed inside my limited comfort zone. When I came to Carey however, I was amazed by the strong connection between international students and local students. People were willing to listen to me even though I took longer to deliver my point of view. I engaged with a much larger group of people and found I could walk around to different tables at lunch to talk to friends from different classes or across year levels. Most importantly, I knew my ideas were valued in and outside of the classroom. My anxiety when communicating changed quite
a lot with the warm and welcoming environment Carey offered. I was encouraged to join debating, which I had never thought of doing. However, I soon fell in love with it and became eager to develop my skills. I have since joined both the Debate Association Victoria and a Chinese debating team. I gained the courage to speak in public and convey my opinions, which has been invaluable for my personal growth. It did not happen overnight; it was a very long process involving my classmates and teachers who continuously helped and motivated me along the way. The confidence I developed is priceless and will continue to have an enormous impact throughout my life. The Carey Local and Overseas Student Association (CLOSA) has also really helped me to become more confident. CLOSA aims to bring together international, interstate and local families to share and respect cultures through get-togethers and events. The student group encourages members to study, play sport or simply have fun together, and include everyone. In this multicultural environment, we help each other with our strengths and weaknesses and share ideas that are influenced by our particular backgrounds. I see this as extremely important because in every culture, there is a unique richness we can learn from. The atmosphere that Carey
students have created together is an extraordinary aspect of this school. At Carey, we appreciate each other’s diverse backgrounds – from western or eastern culture, from the Northern or Southern Hemisphere – and together, embark on a journey towards a greater future.
