This session is a panel discussion filled with LTC experts, including an ombudsman, an attorney, a RN/LALD, and a 35-year provider veteran with experience in behavioral health. Discussion will focus on what we see, perspectives of our experts regarding those scenarios, and proactive actions we can be taking to see decreases. Please bring some questions and perhaps we can get to those also.

The need to connect with BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, & People of Color) communities is important—now more than ever.

According to the Minnesota State Demographic Center, between 2018 and 2053, the White, non-Hispanic/Latino population is expected to decrease from 84.1% to 69.2%, while other groups expect significant increases. This means the talent pool for employers will reflect that of its society becoming more diverse. It is beneficial that employers connect and develop relationships with BIPOC talent for increasing their workforce. The Department of Employment & Economic Development’s (DEED) workforce strategy consultant for the metro area will discuss recruiting and retaining a diverse workforce. Topics of discussion during this presentation will include effective engagement, the importance of engaging with a diverse workforce, DEI, and where to start for employers.

Are our mission, vision, and values—along with the promises we make to our residents and families—aligned with how we support our staff and teams? Is it comparable or compatible?

Our systems will get what they need whether we like it or not.

Our current workforce crisis is an example of our systems getting what they need by violence. We are good at adjusting our systems to build better capacity to meet the needs of today. New policies or procedures to ease the disruption to the systems. We are failing to realize that it’s not our operating systems that are broken. However, our “human operating system” is untethered and falling apart. What our entire staff have been through in the last three years has taken an unprecedented toll on our mental and emotional well-being.

We are not the same people we were then. Learn to focus and build our human capacity by leading and supporting in a way that supports the human experience. Human experience includes uncertainty, change, anxiety, frustration, anger, fear, grief, loss, moral distress, compassion fatigue, and the list goes on. Hard things. It has been nothing but hard things— and continues to be. Learn and understand tools and skills to navigate the hard human things for yourself and your staff in a more sustainable way.

2-A: ASSISTED LIVING CONTRACT TERMINATIONS– SCENARIO EXAMPLES & OVERCOMING HURDLES

Attorneys Rebecca Coffin and Ryan Usher will provide an overview of the process for terminating a resident’s assisted living contract.

They will discuss the statutory requirements and common mistakes made by providers. This session will mainly focus on case scenarios including when no one shows up to the pretermination meeting, when a resident refuses to be assessed for a new discharge location, and examples of working with the resident and advocates/case manager to find a location to best meet the resident’s needs. Examples will be provided on how facilities have worked with residents to accommodate needs and avoid termination appeal hearings.

3-B: WORKFORCE STRATEGIES FOR ENGAGING YOUTH INTO THE LTC PROFESSION

Workforce is a challenge that exists in all our locations. We cannot keep doing the same things and expecting different results. So, how can we, as providers, get youth excited about LTC career pathways? What tactical strategies can be used today?

What we, as employers, can do is to support youth programs like: HOSA, scrubs camp, high school training programs, CTE, mentoring, tours, etc. Connections with youth is one of our largest areas of opportunity for workforce development, and it appears that this will be the case for the foreseeable future.

How can we seize this opportunity? This panel will discuss these topics and more.

CEs The Assisted Living Summit is accredited by the Minnesota Board of Executives for Long-Term Services and Supports (BELTSS) for licensed assisted living directors, nursing home administrators, and health services executives. The summit is designed to meet the Minnesota Board of Nursing criteria for contact hours. The Board of Nursing does not preapprove continuing education.

While the Assisted Living Summit is accredited for continuing education by BELTSS, the summit is not a pathway to assisted living director licensure.

NEW this year! Tracking attendance for CE purposes will be done per session with QR codes & your smart phone. Details will be emailed after your registration.

ELECTRONIC CEs You can check your CEs earned from Care Providers of Minnesota on the Care Providers of Minnesota website.

CANCELLATION/NO-SHOW POLICY We understand that circumstances arise that may prevent you from attending the summit after you have registered. If you cancel on or before Wednesday, May 10, 2023, we will gladly refund your registration fee and retain only $25 per attendee for a cancellation fee.
