2-B: A caregiver’s guide to communicating with people who have hearing loss

One in three adults between the ages of 65 and 74, and one in two adults ages 75 and older, have hearing loss significant enough to make communicating a challenge. The impacts of age-related hearing loss may be profound and life changing when left untreated.

During this training, you will learn about issues associated with hearing loss and correlation between untreated hearing loss and other health conditions. Also, you will learn how to address hearing loss, explore types of assistive technology, communication strategies, and discover communication accommodations that are available.

Concerns happen, no matter the size of the community, or number of residents, Regional Ombudsmen offer a unique perspective on best practices when working with residents to address concerns and work towards resolution. AL providers hold a massive under-tapped power, the ability to advocate for themselves. This form of grassroots advocacy cannot be mirrored and has the potential to shift priority setting in the legislature. Learn how to best engage with the legislators that vote on the rules you follow and the reimbursement you receive. Without knowing your story, legislators won’t understand your struggles and won’t prioritize investing in your success. This session will navigate you through AL reporting requirements for VAs including abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation. 5-C: Intergenerational & cultural connections: Fostering an inclusive culture in today’s LTC

ALs have evolved over the years, where communities may consist of age populations from 18–to over 100–year-old residents from different ethnic backgrounds, culture, languages, economic backgrounds, and needs. The Office of Ombudsman for LongTerm Care (OOLTC) has self-advocacy staff that empower and support residents in LTC communities in MN. This session, using real life examples, Kab Nras and Tammy will describe how cultural competence, cultural humility and person-centered thinking and practice are integrally linked, and bridge gaps between intergenerational residents, staff and the wider community.

5-D: Keeping residents & staff safe while managing residents’ difficult behaviors

Rob Rodè and Rebecca Coffin will discuss issues facilities face when residents become threatening or violent to other residents or staff, or act in violation of the AL contract. Presenters will review the legal definition of harassment and scenarios of resident behaviors, nonmedical intervention options, and internal tools to protect residents.

This session will also explain best practices in documentation of contract violations, such as smoking, and provide an overview of the contract termination process.

ACCREDITATION

The Assisted Living Summit is accredited by the Minnesota Board of Executives for Long-Term Services and Supports (BELTSS) for licensed assisted living directors, nursing home administrators, and health services executives. The Summit is designed to meet the Minnesota Board of Nursing criteria for contact hours. The Board of Nursing does not pre-approve continuing education.

While the Assisted Living Summit is accredited for continuing education by BELTSS, the Summit is not a pathway to assisted living director licensure.

CANCELLATION/NO-SHOW POLICY

We understand that circumstances arise that may prevent you from attending the summit after you have registered. If you cancel on or before Friday, April 4, 2025, we will gladly refund your registration fee and retain only $50 per attendee for a cancellation fee.

We are unable to offer any refund after Friday, April 4, 2025, for canceled registrations. We encourage you to find someone to take your place if possible. No-shows are charged the full registration fee and receive the Summit materials in electronic formats.
