The ultra light Pride GoGo Carbon scooter

Welcome to the very first edition of CareCo Life!
This issue is more packed than one of those outrageously expensive Easter Eggs, except instead of chocolate (sorry to disappoint), you’ll find a first look inside our stereotype-busting Coventry showroom and our resident OT’s top tips for improving your mobility as you age.
Elsewhere in this packed first issue, we’ve got advice for getting outdoors this spring (sunshine not guaranteed, but we live in hope), a lovely fresh springtime salad recipe and a bunch of puzzles to keep your brain as agile as a carbon fibre tri-walker! We’ve even managed to get some brilliant ambassadors and mobility experts to share their wisdom with us on everything from styling your riser recliners to staying active from the comfort of your own home.
One thing I’m especially proud to share in this first issue is the inspiring fundraising success of my colleagues on behalf of Macmillan. From gruelling hikes and glitzy galas to bake sales and Christmas jumper days, we’ve raised thousands for a properly brilliant cause – and come away with plenty of tales to tell!
This is just the beginning, and I can’t wait to share more with you soon. Here’s to a wonderful Easter for you and your family. Enjoy!
Joe Abbitt Executive Editor

Enjoy the longer days - these expert gardening tips are ideal for over 50s with mobility challenges.

Gardening is one of life’s simple pleasures, offering a wonderful mix of gentle exercise, mental well-being, and the joy of being outdoors in the fresh air. Spring is also the perfect time to get your garden ready for summer and start sowing your seeds, especially for things such as carrots, radishes, and lettuce.
For those with mobility challenges, maintaining a garden might feel overwhelming. But with a few thoughtful adjustments and the right tools, gardening can remain an accessible and rewarding activity.
Here are some practical tips to help you enjoy your garden to the fullest this spring:

it slow and steady
Gardening is meant to be relaxing and enjoyable, so there’s no need to rush. Pace yourself and take regular breaks.
For a low maintenance garden, consider artificial grass and perennial plants that require less upkeep but still look impressive. Remember, your garden is your sanctuary. Focus on creating a space that brings you joy, not stress.

the right tools and aids
Safety and comfort are essential when gardening. Look for ergonomic tools with non-slip grips to make tasks like planting and pruning easier.
A sturdy garden kneeler with handles can provide much-needed support when working at ground level, while raised beds or pots can reduce the need for bending. Lightweight watering cans or hoses with triggers can also help minimise strain.

Gardening can be physically demanding, so start with manageable projects to avoid fatigue. Focus on one section of the garden at a time, whether it’s a flower bed or a small herb patch. Achieving small goals will boost your confidence and give you the satisfaction of seeing your efforts flourish.
4
Integrate comfortable seating areas into your garden so you can take breaks or simply enjoy your surroundings. A shaded bench or patio with soft cushions is perfect for relaxing on a sunny afternoon.
Add wind chimes, bird feeders, or a small water feature to enhance the tranquil atmosphere.

Cluster plants together in one area to minimise the need for moving around. Raised planters, hanging baskets, or pots grouped near a seating area can make tending to your plants much easier.
Choose low-maintenance varieties such as lavender, geraniums, or hardy shrubs, and for a touch of spring, try tomatoes, courgettes, or strawberries.
Make accessibility a priority

If your garden includes steps, consider adding ramps or handrails for improved access. There are even fold-away ramps available to use when needed. Raised pathways or non-slip surfaces can also help ensure safety. For those with balance concerns, a garden trolley can be a useful alternative to carrying heavy items.

If mobility is more restricted, consider window boxes, indoor planters, or small greenhouses that can be accessed from a seated position. Growing herbs, flowers, or vegetables on a windowsill or balcony can be just as rewarding as tending a larger garden.
Will Harrison, founder of CareCo, shares: “Gardening is a wonderful way to connect with nature and enjoy the outdoors. Mobility challenges shouldn’t stop anyone from experiencing its benefits. There are many tools and adaptations available - from kneelers with balancing aids to lightweight, easy-to-handle equipment - that make gardening accessible for everyone.”

A Stiltz Homelift will help you continue living in the home you love.
A Stiltz Homelift is an ideal and affordable alternative to a stairlift. You can now safely travel between the floors in your home while keeping your stairs the way they have always been. Neat & Discreet
A Stiltz Homelift can be installed into almost any room in your home. A Stiltz is uniquely compact with the smallest model taking up just over half a square metre – now that IS discreet. The homelift plugs directly into a standard domestic socket and uses less power than boiling a kettle. The homelifts run on self-supporting rails so there is no need to drill into walls and the motor is fully self-contained within the lift car. Neat.
While some Stiltz customers have an immediate need for a homelift, others are looking to future-proof their existing home for when the stairs do eventually become a challenge. Don’t go through the unnecessary expense

After an injury sustained as a young teenager, Hannah developed Complex Regional Pain Syndrome and secondary complications requiring the use of a powerchair.

Hannah has been listed on the Disability Power 100, is a blogger and public speaker, was invited to give a TEDx speech, regularly appears on the news, and is a part-time trainee accountant. A busy schedule indeed!
We sat down with Hannah to discuss the accessibility issues still plaguing public places in the UK, the things you learn when you become disabled, and her vital ambassadorship roles with White Lodge and Purple Tuesday.

What are some of the frustrations that you still must deal with in 2025 with accessibility?
A significant number of shops and restaurants are still not accessible in 2025. Everywhere I go, I have to check the access prior to attending and availability of accessible toilet facilities. Meticulous planning and attention to detail is required.

If you could change one thing about the way mobility issues are perceived, what would that be?
That society realised using a wheelchair or mobility aid is not the worst thing in the world. That mobility aids provide freedom, independence, access to the world. They improve people’s quality of life and are enabling, not disabling.
Without my wheelchair I would be mainly in bed, but able to take a few steps in the house with a walker and support. With no aids I would be in bed all the time. That is far worse. Not being able to go out in the garden or world, go to physiotherapy, go to work, see friends and family and not be able to live my life.
I spent 3.5 years bedbound and seeing four walls. That is far worse.
Do workplaces need to do more for people with disabilities/mobility issues?
Definitely, workplaces need to ensure they are accessible to all and inclusive. Workplaces often underestimate the value disabled people bring to a company. Disabled people provide excellent problem solving, adaptable, resilient employees. As well as helping the company become more representative of society. Which in turn will translate to success, increased growth and profitability. Companies need to rethink how they perceive disabled people, as by seeing disabled people as a negative and not being inclusive, they are the ones that are missing out.
What disability aids do you use?
A powerchair, four-wheeled walker, I have just started trialling crutches with a lot of support in physiotherapy sessions, a slide board, shower chair, profiling bed, air flow mattress, manual wheelchair, perching stool, ramps and various accessories.
Are you studying or working at the moment?
I am studying Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and so far, have passed 8/13 exams.
I also work part-time as a Finance Administrator.
How do you manage to balance studying, working, physiotherapy and health?
With great difficulty! I have to do 3-4 hours of physiotherapy a day to maintain my pain, stiffness, mobility and progress. On days when I work, I often end up only doing 2 hours and I suffer with exhaustion and more pain as a result.
It is a balancing act! I don’t get much time to socialise but when I study, I am very antisocial, I take a lot of my annual leave off work to study and I just need to get through that period.
I have a very active brain which my body doesn’t keep up with. I have to rein it in a bit to what is actually possible. As a result, I often overdo it and pay the price.
How do you exercise?
I attend White Lodge, a centre for disabled children and adults in Surrey twice a week for a mixture of physiotherapy, hydrotherapy and fitness. Fitness is like exercise, strengthening muscles and using the Motomed bike.
I go swimming once a week. Initially, I spasm a lot when I get in the pool, but once I have settled and adjusted to the temperature I can swim well.
Without
my wheelchair I would be mainly in bed, but able to take a few steps in the house with a walker and support.
I mainly swim with my arms, but try and get my legs to move a bit. I also find the pool a useful place to do standing practice and other exercises. At home I do a variety of bed exercises, exercises in my powerchair, standing, walking with a frame, splints and my PA.
Have you been involved in any disability sporting events?
I have participated in three Superhero Tri events. They are great fun and I would recommend them to everyone. It is an accessible triathlon where most people dress up as superheroes, there are no cut off times and anything goes. You can do it on your own or as part of a team. At least one person on each team should consider themselves to have a disability.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I don’t really have free time. I am always busy and trying to fit everything into my day! I rarely watch television or just relax. I am generally either on the go or recovering sleeping. Especially with the fact that things take longer, the daily physio I have to do and the exhaustion that means I need to have a sleep in the day, time doesn’t seem to be on my side!
What are your hobbies?
I swim for exercise but I enjoy swimming anyway. Writing blog posts is also probably a hobby, often in evenings a little at a time when I need some down time. I pick it up and put it down over days or sometimes weeks when I have a few minutes here and there.
I also enjoy occasional meet ups with friends and my godchildren.
What is your experience with travelling?
My travelling experience is limited. I have a lot of pain when travelling so I have not ventured far. I have stayed in the Holiday Inn at Winchester, Ellwood Cottages in Dorset and a hotel called The Towers in Swansea, Wales for my friend’s wedding.
I had a good experience with all of them. I would like to travel more and hope to branch out.

I would recommend doing your homework with any destination first. It is great to know someone else has been there and this is a good starting point, but phone the place up and check out their website as remember that disability affects everyone differently.
What would you say to someone who has just been diagnosed with an illness or acquired a disability?
It is hard, I acknowledge that. It may take months or years to come to terms with. But try and embrace your disability, take any opportunity that comes your way with both hands. If they don’t, reach out to charities and find out what opportunities are out there. Connect with others who have disabilities and follow them or social media. The world will reopen for you, it may well be different, there may be hurdles and obstacles along the way, but you have got this!
What have you learnt from becoming disabled?
That there is not equity in the world. I will have to work harder than non-disabled people to show my capability.
What is the biggest challenge of being disabled?
Other people’s attitudes, assumptions and stereotypes.
Is there anything that has surprised you about becoming disabled?
How supportive and welcoming the disabled community are. We are always there for each other. I love the fact we struggle to go past another wheelchair user without smiling at a minimum but often stopping and starting to chat. Can you imagine non-disabled people doing that!
What one thing would you like to change and improve for the disabled community?
To change people seeing disabled people as ‘less than’ and the assumptions that disability only affects old people.
Often, I find people expect less from a disabled person. Most disabled people, are just as capable
‘‘
I am always busy and trying to fit everything into my day!

and able as non-disabled people, they just have additional hurdles to navigate to achieve the same result.
However, society often assumes if you use a wheelchair then mentally you are not as able. I would encourage everyone to treat disabled people like they treat non-disabled people. Like people. If for example you say ‘Hi’ the worst that can happen if the disabled person can’t speak, is you don’t get an answer. However, they may well have heard you and appreciated being treated properly.
What are your ambitions in life?
I want to become a Chartered Accountant and progress my career as far as possible.
I would like to make more of a difference, help change and challenge these harmful stereotypes and help society change their view and treatment of disabled people.
Tell us about your ambassador roles.
I am an ambassador for White Lodge, in Chertsey, Surrey, which supports children, young people and adults with disabilities. They have a nursery, physiotherapy and hydrotherapy for children and adults, playschemes and a respite centre for young
people, and they provide leisure and life skills for adults.
I speak at various events, raising awareness of the charity and sharing how they have helped me.
I am also an ambassador for Purple Tuesday, a great initiative founded by Mike Adams encouraging businesses from places of work to commercial shops to consider the needs of disabled people and be more inclusive. I have been up to Canary Wharf and spoken about them.
You were listed on the Disability Power 100 in 2024! Can you tell us more about that?
I am honoured to have been listed on the Disability Power 100 2024. The list run by the Shaw Trust recognises the 100 most influential disabled people in the UK. The presentation evening was in Wembley at a lovely accessible venue. It was great to meet so many incredible disabled people.
I was recognised on the list due to my blog Hannah’s Hope, co-founding a Disability Awareness Network (DAWN) at work, being an ambassador, on the news, radio, writing a number of articles and speaking at many events.

Maintaining an active lifestyle can improve both physical and mental wellbeing, no matter your age or mobility level.
If you’re looking for simple and effective ways to stay active, we’ve rounded up some gentle outdoor and chair-based exercises perfect for anyone with limited mobility. These exercises are not only low-impact but also enjoyable, ensuring you stay fit, active and healthy.
Getting outside and enjoying fresh air is a fantastic way to boost your mood and engage in gentle physical activity. However, if you prefer to stay indoors, chair exercises are ideal for improving strength, flexibility, and circulation without the strain of standing or walking. These routines can be done at home or even while sitting outdoors.
Find a sturdy bench and try these easy stretches to loosen up your muscles:
Side Stretch : Sit tall, place one hand on the bench for support, and slowly raise the opposite arm overhead, leaning gently to the side. Hold for a few seconds and switch sides.
Forward Stretch : Sit with your feet flat on the ground, and gently lean forward, reaching towards your toes as far as is comfortable. Return to the seated position slowly.
Using a sturdy surface like a railing or picnic table for support, try some balance exercises:
Heel-to-Toe Walk : Place one foot directly in front of the other as if walking on a tightrope.
Standing Leg Lifts : Hold onto a railing and slowly lift one leg out to the side. Hold for a moment and lower it back down. Repeat on the other side.
Sit upright in a sturdy chair with your feet flat on the ground. Lift one knee towards your chest, then lower it back down. Alternate legs, mimicking a marching motion. Start slowly and gradually increase your pace if comfortable.
Seated arm raises
Hold light weights (or even water bottles) in your hands. Sit tall and lift your arms straight out to the sides to shoulder height, then lower them. Repeat for 8-10 reps.
Extend one leg slightly and gently rotate your ankle in circles to improve joint mobility and circulation. Switch directions and repeat with the other leg. You can also find pedal exercisers – a portable upper and lower body tool and an excellent accessory to get the blood flowing through the upper and lower body and to stay active without the impact problems that can occur through other exercise.
Remember to stay hydrated, start slow, and invite friends to join you. Staying active doesn’t have to be daunting. With these simple outdoor and chair-based exercises, you can maintain your health, improve your mobility, and enjoy life to the fullest. If exercises feel daunting to you, simply getting outside can do wonders for your health, both physical and mental. Using rollators and walking frames provide stability and support while walking, some rollators feature comfortable seats for rest breaks.
Remember, every little bit of movement counts – so take that first step (or roll) today!

Sarah Cook is an interior stylist with over 16 years of experience. Renowned for her keen eye for detail and meticulous approach, she has built a strong reputation for creating visually stunning and cohesive spaces.
Sarah has worked with CareCo for many years, bringing her expertise to lifestyle shoots that showcase mobility furniture in stylish and inviting settings. Her ability to curate spaces that balance functionality with aesthetics has made her invaluable in demonstrating how mobility solutions can integrate seamlessly into modern homes.
When we think of mobility furniture, the first thing that often comes to mind is function over form.

But why should practicality mean compromising on style? The key to seamlessly incorporating mobility pieces into your home is to stop thinking of them as purely functional aids and instead view them as part of your overall interior design. The best way to approach mobility furniture is to treat it like any other piece in your home. Yes, it may require extra space to ensure ease of movement, but that doesn’t mean it has to dominate the room.
‘‘
The best way to approach mobility furniture is to treat it like any other piece in your home.

Make it part of your style
One concern when adding mobility furniture is that it might feel out of place. A simple way to counteract this is by styling it as you would any other piece. Pair it with complementary side tables, lamps, or rugs to help it blend seamlessly into your existing décor.
I’m obsessed with the range of bright, eyecatching fabrics CareCo offers. If you love a bold statement, consider vibrant upholstery choices. Incorporating different textures like velvet can add an extra touch of elegance. A colourful chair can act as a stylish accent piece alongside a neutral sofa, proving that mobility furniture can be both practical and visually appealing.
Prioritise comfort without sacrificing aesthetics
Whether I’m designing a room set for photography or curating a store layout, my main priority is always creating that ‘wow’ factor – making people want that product in their home. Mobility furniture doesn’t have to conform to outdated stereotypes of being purely functional or unattractive. CareCo’s range, for example, demonstrates that these pieces can be modern, stylish, and practical all at once.
Another tip is to never underestimate the power of soft furnishings! A well-placed cushion or a luxuriously soft throw can transform any chair,
making it feel inviting and homely. These small details not only enhance comfort but also tie the look of a room together effortlessly.
For me, the goal has always been to make mobility furniture appealing to everyone, not just those who need it. Shopping for these pieces should be just as enjoyable as browsing any high-end furniture store. I love incorporating colour and design elements that challenge the misconception that mobility furniture has to be beige and uninspiring. The truth is… it can be as stylish as the rest of your home.

For me, the goal has always been to make mobility furniture appealing to everyone.
Whether you’re redesigning a space or simply looking to introduce a single new piece, remember, mobility furniture can be a seamless, beautiful part of your home. With the right approach, it’s not just about accessibility; it’s about elevating your space in a way that feels uniquely yours.

Have you heard people mention AI but don’t quite understand what it is, what it does or how people use it? Let’s look into it a little.
In our explainer series, we explain what things are so that you never feel left out of the conversation. Whilst we’ll never claim to make you an expert, we will be able to give you the basic understanding so you can engage in conversation around key subjects.
So what exactly is it?
AI stands for Artificial Intelligence. It works like an assistant to people, for example, if you were writing a story and you wanted to have it proof-read then you could copy and paste your story into a website like ChatGPT and ask it to proof-read your story for you. It’s a very smart tool, and has many uses, but ultimately, it’s a bit like a helpful librarian with a huge brain and able to answer an enormous number of questions.

You may even be using AI without even knowing it!
If you’ve ever used your voice to speak with Siri or Alexa either on your phone or perhaps on a smart speaker such as an echo device, then that is AI understanding your voice and answering your questions!
Have you ever noticed that if you use Netflix, Amazon prime, BBC iPlayer or any other streaming service that after you’ve watched films or episodes that it builds a profile of you and suggests series, or movies, that you may like? That’s AI.
Even if you send a text from your phone, AI is at work, often using autocorrect to ‘guess’ what you mean, or predicting the rest of your sentence.
Think of it like a helpful assistant who learns from what you do and tries to make your life a little easier!

With four different-sized grips, this handy tool gives you the leverage you need to remove all kinds of lids and caps. The textured rubber material provides a non-slip grip for weaker hands, so it’s ideal for sufferers of arthritis or carpal tunnel syndrome.

Prep time: 10 mins
Serving: 6
SALAD:
400g of cubed feta cheese
400g tin of chickpeas in water
280g jar of marinated artichoke hearts
250g cherry tomatoes, halved
½ an onion, thinly sliced or diced
120g baby spinach

SALAD DRESSING:
8 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
6 tbsp red wine vinegar
½ lemon juiced
1 large garlic clove – crushed
½ tsp dried oregano
½ tsp Dijon mustard

Combine the ingredients for the dressing in a small bowl and whisk to combine. If you find it easier, you can use a jar – simply screw the lid on and shake well. Add salt or pepper according to taste.
Using the Multi Grip Jar and Bottle Opener, open your jars and combine in a bowl, along with your rocket. Make sure to rinse and pat dry your chickpeas first to avoid a watery salad!
Chop the cherry tomatoes and the onion and add to the rest of your ingredients.
Drizzle dressing over top of salad and toss together and serve!

Tense, darkly funny and satirical, Yellowface is a satisfying read which address real issues in the publishing industry. It was last year’s ultimate summer read and if you never got chance to visit it, now might be the time.

A biting takedown of the publishing industry as June starts to rewrite and position herself as best friend of the infamous Athena Liu and making the novel her own. Using a pseudonym, she takes on the work as her own and positions herself as the best new author. However, somebody knows her secret and they’re threatening to reveal the truth…

Jane Bunting tells the amazing story of how CareCo raised over £16,500 for Macmillan over the last 12 months.

When my alarm buzzed at 4am that chilly September morning, I wasn’t sure what lay ahead. As Head of HR at CareCo, I know we have a resilient and compassionate team, but the challenge we were about to take on - the Jurassic Coast Mighty Hike for Macmillan Cancer Support - felt monumental.
A 20-strong group of us set out from CareCo HQ in Braintree, Essex, to tackle 14 miles of the rugged and stunning Jurassic Coast. It was no ordinary walk: steep cliffs, muddy tracks, and unpredictable weather turned it into a real test of endurance. Our route took us from Wareham to Swanage, where we finally crossed the finish line, soaked, exhausted, but elated.
But our hike is only part of the work we’ve been doing for Macmillan, with on-going bake sales and an upcoming overnight darts tournament that will take place in our Braintree office.
We also held a black-tie gala to raise even more money. Our black-tie gala raised £6000 alone! The event was held at Channels in Chelmsford on Saturday, 9th November, and was attended by CareCo staff and partners. £2000 of this came from ticket sales, and an incredible £4000 was raised on the night itself. The black-tie ball welcomed guests with drinks on arrival and featured games, an auction, a three-course dinner, a raffle, and DJs to fill the dancefloor. Prizes generously donated included a bespoke custom suit, Leeds Rhinos VIP tickets, Tottenham Hotspur vs. Newcastle United tickets, a World Cup football signed by Jack Grealish, and a London Eye experience.
Macmillan Cancer Support is a cause close to our hearts at CareCo. Our mission is to provide mobility aids that help people live their best lives, no matter their challenges. Similarly, Macmillan ensures no one has to face cancer alone, offering vital support to individuals and their families. Over the past three years, six of my colleagues have faced cancer themselves, and seeing their strength inspired us to act.

I couldn’t be prouder of the CareCo team. Taking on this hike wasn’t just about raising money - it was about showing what’s possible when people come together for a shared purpose. At CareCo, we’re never afraid of a challenge, whether it’s helping someone regain their independence or climbing cliffs for charity.
Macmillan’s work makes an incredible difference to so many lives and being able to contribute in this way was humbling. It reminded me how much can be achieved when determination and kindness meet.
If you’d like to support Macmillan’s vital work, it’s not too late to donate.

We have been named a Disability Confident Employer. The Level 2 accreditation has been issued from 22/10/2024 until 19/10/2027.
CareCo want the team to know that they are supported from the recruitment process and throughout their career with CareCo.
Jane Bunting, Head of HR at CareCo says, “This accreditation is something that we’ve taken seriously, because we have a duty of care not only to our customers, but also to our amazing team that support the success of the business. We deal with people every day across our stores with either disability and mobility needs, and we want to ensure that our staff with disability needs are just as looked after as we want our customers to be.
Disability is a spectrum, and it could happen to any one of us at any time, and if someone acquires an unexpected long-term health condition or disability whilst working with us then we want them to feel confident that they will have the support they need as a part of our team.
This also leads into our recruitment, we want to hire the best people for the job, no matter what their needs are. Our commitment to being awarded a Disability Confident Employer shows our investment in one of our most important assets as a business which is our people. We want to make sure that our recruitment process never puts anyone at a disadvantage because they have a disability.
Our journey as a business has seen us grow, and we want anyone that wants to be a part of that journey to be able to join us without feeling like they have been put a disadvantage from their application onwards.”
‘‘

Founder and Mobility expert Will Harrison also adds, “Our people are what makes our business a success. Whether we are investing in our internal leadership development program or offering opportunities to those who want to contribute to our success, there is no doubt, that the people who work for CareCo make us what we are.
This recognition is something we are extremely proud of, and something that we will continue to invest in and develop. A disability will never stop us employing genuinely talented people, and we want to ensure that our staff feel comfortable when they come into work every day. There is no other reason for us to be doing this other than it is the right thing to do.”
As a Disability Confident Committed Employer, CareCo have committed to:
• Ensuring our recruitment process is inclusive and accessible
• Communicating and promoting vacancies
• Offering an interview to disabled people who meet the minimum criteria for the job
• Anticipating and providing reasonable adjustments as required
• Supporting any existing employee who acquires a disability or long-term health condition, enabling them to stay in work
• At least one activity that will make a difference for disabled people
We want to hire the best people for the job, no matter what their needs are.

An Occupational Therapist’s guide to maintaining mobility as you age.
Mobility is the key to independence, but staying active can become more challenging as we age.
Occupational Therapist Natasha Bruce-Jones offers practical advice to help you stay on your feet, keep moving, and enjoy life to the fullest.

Find what works for you
Exercise might seem like the obvious answer to maintaining mobility, but it can feel daunting if you struggle with balance or coordination. The good news is there’s a way to move for everyone. Chair-based exercises, stretching, and resistance training are excellent options for those with limited mobility. Stretching keeps joints flexible and muscles limber, while resistance exercises can help maintain a stable walking gait and prevent further issues.
“Exercise should be enjoyable, not uncomfortable,” Natasha says. Low-impact options like swimming, aqua classes, or seated exercises can be gentle, fun, and sociable. Warm water, in particular, can ease joint pain, making these activities even more appealing. Bowls, curling, boccia, and pétanque are fantastic choices for those who enjoy games, blending movement with social interaction. Don’t hesitate to explore local leisure centres—they often offer adapted classes and personalised programmes to help you exercise safely and confidently.
Create a mobility-friendly space
A well-designed home can make all the difference in staying mobile. Natasha advises assessing your living space for potential hazards.
Thick rugs, trailing wires, or cluttered furniture can easily become tripping points. “Good lighting is essential,” she adds, as it helps you navigate your home safely, especially in dimly lit areas.
Small adaptations can boost both confidence and independence. Ensure your rooms are spacious enough to accommodate walking aids and consider helpful tools like grabbing sticks or wheeled trolleys. These can assist with daily tasks, such as picking up items or transporting a cup of tea, without compromising your balance. Even dressing aids can make bending and stretching safer, empowering you to maintain independence in your daily routine.

Natasha Bruce-Jones is a member of the British Association of Occupational Therapists and brings 24 years of experience in helping people navigate daily life with greater ease. From sitting comfortably and walking safely to enjoying a restful night’s sleep, she understands the vital role of the right mobility aids.

What you eat has a direct impact on how you move. A balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains supports strong muscles and bones. Calcium and iron are especially important for maintaining bone health, while good hydration helps regulate blood pressure and prevent dizziness.
“Eating well gives you more energy and motivation to stay active,” Natasha explains. Walking outdoors daily can further enhance your mental and physical health. Even if walking unassisted feels daunting, mobility aids like sticks or wheeled walkers can provide the support you need to stay independent.

As an independent expert, Natasha’s insight helps refine and expand our product range, ensuring we continue to provide practical, flexible solutions for improving quality of life. We’re thrilled to have her on board to share her expertise.

Natasha emphasises the importance of finding mobility aids that suit your specific needs. “There’s a wide variety of options, from crutches to wheeled walkers, that can make a world of difference,” she says. Brands like CareCo offer a range of products designed to keep you mobile and confident.
“Ageing happens to us all,” Natasha concludes. “But with the right tools, advice, and mindset, you can maintain your independence and live a fulfilling life.”
By incorporating these strategies into your routine, you’ll not only improve your mobility but also enhance your overall quality of life – because staying active is a key ingredient for ageing gracefully.

There’s a wide variety of options, from crutches to wheeled walkers, that can make a world of difference.

More than ten years ago, Joanne was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). Determined to stay as active as possible, Joanne and her family visited their local CareCo showroom on a mission to replace her outdated scooter with a more modern, comfortable and convenient model.
“
My life changed in the way that I couldn’t walk as far”, Joanne says of the impact that MS has had over the years. “I used to be an avid walker, which is a real disappointment to me because I can’t do that now, but I want to do as much as I possibly can.”

I trust it more than the old scooter. It gives me the freedom to go out when I choose, and I’m looking forward to summer! ‘‘
Of the utmost importance for Joanne, then, was upgrading from her cumbersome old mobility scooter to a model that would fit into the boot of their car. Having heard of CareCo through family friends, Joanne and her family headed off to their local showroom. After being shown a handful of scooters that matched Joanne’s wishlist, they decided to plump for the X-Go Astro. “We had a test drive in the store and saw how easy it was to collapse it and put it in the boot of the car, and that was easier to do than with my old scooter.”
It’s not just Joanne who sees the benefit of her new scooter. Claire, her daughter, has noticed a huge difference. She describes the Astro as a massive improvement on the last scooter, praising it for its reliability. “We know we’re not going to get stuck in a pickle, stuck in any mud patches, or end up having to push Mum up Scarborough Castle hill!”
Joanne loves the reliability of her new scooter, as well as the features it offers that weren’t present on her last scooter, like on-board battery charging. She credits her showroom visit for showing her the difference these features can make when it comes to living independently.
With a new remote-controlled garage door fitted at home and the knowledge that her X-Go Astro won’t let her down, Joanne relishes the idea that she isn’t “stuck at home all day while my husband is at work. This scooter has really changed our life!”

Exceptional, professional and knowledgeable staff and service
We visited CareCo in Blaydon to purchase a new chair. The sales assistants were very knowledgeable and helped to demonstrate / test the different chairs. Nothing was too much effort, they were professional and courteous throughout our visit. We didn’t feel at all rushed to make a decision; they appreciated it is a big investment and they were able to answer and queries, provide useful and impartial advice to help us to make our purchase. We would definitely recommend, the service we received was exceptional.

Excellent customer service
Fantastic customer service today from Laurraine at the Newcastle branch. Mum was given time and consideration to help her choose the best chair suited to her needs. Laurraine spoke clearly to help Mum hear and always addressed her personally. There was no pressure to choose a particular model and we were given plenty of time and privacy to make a decision. I would highly recommend this showroom for any mobility/ home needs.
