How my father inspired innovation at CareCo 10-year frame warranty

When my father was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease at 86, one of my biggest concerns was helping him stay mobile and comfortable.

Naturally, I turned to CareCo – the company I’ve proudly been a part of for many years – and chose one of our wheelchairs to help.

We decided on the newly released Volar 10 Self-Propelled Wheelchair, mainly because it was lightweight and easy for my mum to lift into the car. It made those day trips and errands so much easier, and for a while, it was perfect.

It wasn’t until a family trip to Blackpool that we realised something could be improved.

My dad found that the pavements and uneven surfaces made for a rather bumpy ride. Watching him struggle a little sparked an idea – and a promise. I told him I’d find a way to make it better.

That simple promise led me on a journey that would eventually help shape one of our most successful wheelchair models, the Volar 10 Comfort.

As an engineer in a previous life, I could immediately see where the design could be refined. Larger front wheels would help absorb bumps, and adding suspension could make a world of difference on rough terrain. I took my thoughts to our product development team, and soon we were deep in the design process.

I’m incredibly proud of what we achieved, and proud that something so personal could become part of the CareCo range, helping others just like my dad.

Months of testing, tweaking, and finetuning followed. We worked closely with our manufacturers to get every detail right, ensuring that the new chair was

Three Paralympic golds. Eleven world titles. Two more Paralympic medals for good measure. Charlotte is one of Britain’s true sporting greats – and the story behind those medals is just as extraordinary.

orn in Mansfield and diagnosed with bilateral tibial hypoplasia, Charlotte had both legs amputated before she was even two years old. For many people, that could have been a full stop. For Charlotte, it was the beginning of the journey.

At 12, she became a competitive swimmer, going on to represent Great Britain in paraswimming for over a decade.

And then? She switched sports.

Most athletes stick to what they know.

Not Charlotte. In 2017 she moved from the pool to paracanoe, swapped her goggles for a paddle, and her sights on something new.

It paid off. Gold medals in Tokyo and Paris 10

proves she wasn’t just good at sport – she was unstoppable. To say the MBE she received in 2022 was deserved is an understatement, to say the least!

But medals aren’t the only thing that matters to Charlotte. After being diagnosed with endometriosis in 2020, she became a passionate voice for women’s health and disability awareness, speaking openly about topics many people still avoid. She’s determined to make sure nobody feels alone in their challenges, whether they’re an athlete or simply trying to live life on their own terms.

Instead of festive films and mince pies, they signed up for the World’s Toughest Row, a mind-boggling 3,000-mile ocean crossing that makes even our most ambitious January fitness goals feel tame.

his extraordinary challenge covers 3,000 miles of fierce, unpredictable ocean. Teams begin on the volcanic shores of San Sebastián de La Gomera in Spain, rowing all the way to Nelson’s Dockyard in Antigua in the Caribbean.

Among this year’s entrants is a team representing the Royal Air Force Regiment Association - a four-man crew determined to show the power of experience, teamwork, and resilience.

The RAF Regiment Atlantic Row Team is battling 3,000 miles of fierce ocean to demonstrate the power of experience, teamwork, and resilience while raising crucial funds for three vital charities.

They want to highlight the importance of mental health, inspire younger generations to challenge themselves, and demonstrate that they’re more than capable of tackling one of the world’s greatest endurance feats.

• Group Captain Andy Calame – Inspector RAF Reserves and a member of The King’s Bodyguard (Honourable Corps of Gentlemen at Arms, St James’s Palace) • Wing Commander Mike Dewar – Chief of Staff, RAF Flying Training • Squadron Leader Mark Jacklin – RAF Safety Centre Their boat, a compact 28-foot vessel named Per Ardua 21, is carrying them 3,000 miles across the Atlantic. No engines. No support boats. Just the strength of their arms, their sense of humour, and a whole lot of determination.

Perhaps the most surprising thing is that for two members of the crew, it’s their second time taking on the challenge. 2025 marks the 21st anniversary of Squadron Leader Mark Jacklin and Air Commodore Matt Stowers’ first crossing of the Atlantic. This time, they’re aiming to complete the race faster and, in their words, “actually enjoy it.”

As a result, subcultures started to exist, and that’s what #BookTok is. Serve with crusty bread for a delicious winter treat, and easy to prepare, this will become a winter staple!

Roasted Winter Veg Tray Bake Cooking time: 35-40 minutes

1. Preheat your oven to 200°C 2. Prepare your vegetables by chopping the carrots, parsnips, turnip and leek into similar sized chunks of around 3-5cm.

Serves 4

3. Remove the skin of the red onions and cut into quarters.

Ingredients

4. Add all the vegetables to a roasting dish and make sure they’re mixed together.

• 2 medium carrots • 2 medium parsnips • 1 small turnip • 1 leek • 2 red onions • 2 handfuls kale • 2 tbsp olive oil • 1 tbsp dried mixed herbs • Salt & pepper • 1 fresh lemon

5. Drizzle with a your oil and mixed herbs and make sure that everything is covered and then also season liberally with salt and pepper to make your vegetables sing.

6. Roast in the oven for around 35 minutes to ensure that your vegetables have softened, a fork should easily be able to go through them.

If not, put back in the oven for another 5-10 minutes, but keep an eye on them!

7. For the final 5 minutes add your kale, as it doesn’t take as long but adds a nice crisp texture alongside colour to your dish.

8. Take out the oven, cut your lemon in half and apply liberally taking care not to add seeds into the bake and voila! Serve immediately.

Question Hi Natasha, I just received CareCo Life magazine and wonder if you can offer guidance. Following some falls at home earlier this year, I had a spell in hospital, resulting in weakness in my legs in addition to a lack of balance.

I ordered from CareCo the 3-wheeler Vestar Tri-Walker. While this has been helpful getting around the flat, especially to the loo at night, it has been very unsafe outside on pavements, etc., where it doesn’t cope with curbs, blind bumps at crossings, or any raised surfaces.

This has meant I am confined inside unless I have someone to steady it.

So, I am now looking at the Traxion with pneumatic tyres. Will this help?

Answer Although a three wheeled walker has good manoeuvrability and can help manage your mobility in tight spaces, its smaller base of support and central wheel can make it more of a challenge to balance than other styles.

It would be useful to visit a showroom and try a 4-wheeled walker. Make sure to take it outdoors and try it on the pavements too! If you regularly have to navigate uneven pavements, trial some 4-wheeled walkers that have suspension and bigger, pneumatic tyres. The larger wheels cope easier with surface level changes, and the suspension can help reduce some of the jolting you may feel through your hands.

Whether it’s a phone or tablet, we all scroll in bed – we’d all love to leave them somewhere else, but that’s just not the world we live in anymore. So think of it less as “getting rid of the phone before bed” and more about “how to use your phone while in bed”. Checking in on work before bed, anything stimulating like a game or even the Wordle you forgot to do earlier, are the perfect ingredients for a restless night’s sleep. Try to wind down and do something more relaxing, maybe a guided meditation on YouTube or just some calming music while you’re getting ready.

You’d be surprised how many people’s issues with sleep can be traced back to something as simple as the bed they sleep in. Getting into a comfortable sleeping position can have a drastic effect on the quality of your sleep, and can help with your breathing too.

Try not to drink alcohol before bed If your New Year’s Resolution is to cut out or down on your alcohol consumption, then this will be music to your ears! While it’s true that alcohol can make you feel more tired, it drastically reduces the quality of your sleep.

Your body is still trying to metabolise the alcohol, so your sleep will, naturally, be interrupted as a result, so it’s best not to drink before bed, especially if you don’t want frequent trips to the loo!

Steve’s story Steve, from Nottingham, has spent his life bringing stories to others, as a drama teacher and through decades of youth theatre work.

But after developing Long COVID, his world narrowed in ways he hadn’t expected. The man who was running half-marathons well into his 60’s suddenly found himself struggling to keep pace on an ordinary walk.

F Walking the same speed as other people became difficult, he explains. Long COVID changed everything. I used to have energy to burn; now I have to ration it.
