hese words by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow tell me how Cardinal Glennon slowly and methodically earned its reputation as a mission-centered, patient—and family­­—focused medical center.

It is the focus on mission that is at the heart of Cardinal Glennon and sets it apart, for mission drives every procedure undertaken, every healing decision made and every patient interaction.

Our mission simply recognizes the fact that every person is precious and is to be treated not just with respect, but with reverence.

Our many doctors, nurses and staff personify the mission of Cardinal Glennon. Their tireless dedication goes beyond health care to human care, from a gentle touch of encouragement or a hug without spoken words to walking hand-in hand with a family down a difficult road. These are people who bring their values to work every day—these are my heroes. Their heroism springs not from walk-off homers but from humble, simple acts like changing a diaper, quiet listening They understand and soothing fear in the better than any of us eyes of a child. Let one that good health is a of them tell you about a day in their life and threshold blessing... you will come to realize that a higher power guides their hands and decisions on a daily basis. They understand better than any of us that good health is a threshold blessing which allows one the opportunity to enjoy all the other benefits of life.

This same commitment to mission is shared by those who serve on the Board of Governors of the Foundation, who work tirelessly to advocate for children’s issues and to raise the funding necessary to continue the mission. Through their tireless efforts, Cardinal Glennon is where a child is welcomed and cared for, a world in which those who have influence and resources struggle to make life better for those who don’t. In a changing health care environment, the Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation is working with the management of the medical center to forge and fund a strategy for the future: one that maintains health care as a calling rather than simply as a business, one that avoids depersonalized care, one where wellness and prevention are as important as treatment.

ave you ever felt as if you’d met an angel? You know… someone who comes into your life, has such an impact on you, fills your life with goodness and sets the standard for the type of person you hope you can be to others. Sue Schaffer of High Ridge, Mo., is certain that her dear friend Vicki Dawdi was, is and always will be an angel to those whom she inspired and those in whose lives she made a difference before losing her battle with breast cancer. “If there was ever an angel, it was Vicki,” Schaffer says.

Immediately drawn to Dawdi’s funloving nature after meeting her in 2003, Schaffer quickly discovered a kind-hearted, faith-filled individual with whom she became fast friends, and shared an abundance of happy times and treasured memories.

Describing Dawdi as a “living saint,” Schaffer recalls the kindness Dawdi displayed for children awaiting adoption. “She helped a lot of kids—kids without families and no one to take care of them. She’d find out when their birthday was and have a birthday party for them,” Schaffer says.

When Dawdi passed away in May 2012, Schaffer grieved the loss of her best friend and pondered what she could do to carry on the good works that had touched so many lives. “I loved her so much, and I wanted to help out and do something like Vicki did—for kids, especially,” Schaffer says.

Cards for Kids allows children from around the area to participate in a little creative friendly competition.

Area school children submit their holiday drawings for entry and winners are selected based on creativity.

Five cards were available for purchase including a reindeer, three wise men and a gingerbread house.

The other two cards included SSM Cardinal Glennon patients Avery Budde and Rocky Manno depicting Mary and Joseph riding a donkey, and Rally Squirrel with his “Have a Rally Merry Christmas” card, featuring him busting out of a Christmas tree holding a giant acorn.

ally was at it again for Valentine’s Day with his crazy sports-themed cards! He was featured on five “lovable” designs of him playing soccer, hockey, volleyball, golf and basketball.

He even got a little crazy and went swinging from the Gateway Arch, proclaiming his love for whomever captured the

“gateway to his heart.”

In total Cards for Kids raised $35,849.25 for the kids at SSM Cardinal Glennon.

Stonewater Spa & Boutique Makes Mani-Pedi House Call

T

hanks to nail technicians from Stonewater Spa & Boutique, patients in the Bob Costas Cancer Center enjoyed a little preholiday pampering during their visit.

Stonewater first got involved with SSM Cardinal Glennon as a participating Glennon Card merchant.

From there, they decided they wanted to keep giving back and sent over nail technician Kimberly Stahnke to provide manicures and pedicures for patients. Stahnke painted patients’ fingers and toes red and pink, topped off with glitter sparkles.

“We loved coming to the Costas Center to do something special for the patients,” said AnnaMarie Pearsons getting a little rest and relaxation from nail technician Kimberly Stahnke.

n December 19, Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Ambassador Mackenzie Scott and Camryn Akerson, CMN Ambassador for SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center, presented a “Firetruck O’Toys” full of Christmas presents for patients of the medical center. Along with Santa Claus, St. Louis Cardinal Matt Holiday and his wife, Board of Governors member, Leslee Holliday joined the Ambassadors as they distributed toys to families in Cardinal Glennon’s atrium.

T

hanks to thousands of school children in the community, Messages of Hope has become a yearlong program, providing hope and inspiration to our patients and families. But there is nothing more magical during the holiday season than a child walking down the bright purple carpets, past the beautiful, sparkling candies and decorations leading up to the giant Christmas tree in the atrium. As they approach its towering, magnificent wonder, their eyes are directed to the sparkling chest beneath, which holds the one special gift they want for the holidays—Hope.

These messages of hope, scrolled in thumb bands, provide inspiration, hope and joy to our patients throughout the holiday season. We are so grateful for the support from our community who have written these inspiring messages.

2013 Employee Appeal In memory of Sister Noreen McGowan

O

n a cold November day, SSM Cardinal Glennon President Sherlyn Hailstone could be seen atop the roof of the medical center. No, she was not trying to get a tan, she was conducting business from her temporary outdoor office! That’s right, Hailstone stayed on the roof until enough employees pledged to donate to the second annual Employee Appeal.

down below with a bull horn, she encouraged them to pledge in support of the hospital they know and love best! The 2013 Employee Appeal asks all SSM Cardinal Glennon employees to give back and pledge a donation from each payroll deduction.

Sherlyn was saved from the roof mid-afternoon, thanks to the generosity and

goodwill of our dedicated employees who came to her rescue. Thanks to all who donated, making this year’s appeal a huge success. There were 300 more pledges turned in for a total of 713 employee pledges.

Sr. Noreen McGowan passed away in August 2012. It was clear that she was watching over the day. A big thank you to all who participated.

As Sr. Noreen said, “It’s in your hands now.”

Merchants help skyrocket Glennon Card sales in second year!

2012 marked the second year of the Glennon Card discount shopping program to support SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center.

Together, Glennon Guild members and select merchants sold 2,000 Glennon Cards—a 54

percent increase from last year. The sales of the cards raised $100,000.

With additional sponsor support, including presenting sponsor Fifth Third Bank, that number increased to a grand total of $147,250.

The Glennon Card entitles purchasers to a 20 percent discount at participating businesses during a designated 10-day shopping period. More than

285 shops, restaurants, spas and salons participated in 2012, an increase of 60 merchants from 2011.

Merchants came out in full force to support the program, selling 921 cards, including 109 cards sold from the highest merchant seller, Williams-Sonoma of Plaza Frontenac. Proceeds from the 2012 program were used to purchase new heart and lung monitoring equipment for the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at the medical center and to support the Children’s Fund.

The Glennon Guild is a 300-member volunteer women’s organization founded to support the interests and growth of SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center and the 200,000 children served each year.

Ameren Lights up

hanks to the generosity of Ameren Corporation’s donation of 3,000 strands of bright white lights, joy was brought to thousands of patients and their families who were with us during the Christmas season.

At dusk on Nov. 19, Tom Voss, chairman, president and CEO of Ameren Corporation, flipped the switch alongside hospital President Sherlyn Hailstone and other supporters, including Kaiser Electric, J.F. Electric, Alberici and Vee Jay Concrete and Cement, who all donated labor and time to install the lights and decorations.

No Christmas light display is complete without a nativity and manger scene. Thanks to Board of Governors member Dave Peacock and family, we now have our very own because of their generous gift.

In addition to lighting up the hospital at Christmas, Ameren supports SSM Cardinal Glennon in various ways. Ameren has served as a “Gold Level” sponsor of the annual Bob Costas Benefit.

Employees at Ameren’s Labadie Energy Center in Franklin County have conducted a holiday charitable fund drive for 16 years.

When some of the employees tossed out the idea, one of them suggested a donation to Cardinal Glennon. “I don’t remember why,” says John Berg, a welder and repairman at the Labadie Energy Center for 38 years.

When the employees delivered their first collection of toys to the medical center, however, the adoption was cemented. “When you go upstairs and see the kids, the question is answered,” Berg says. “The next year I thought, ‘We have to do something.’”

Each year since, Labadie employees have conducted a toy and supply drive for patients at SSM Cardinal Glennon. For years, their annual goal was $10,000 and so far they have raised more than $165,000.

Employees from other Ameren facilities and outside friends also contribute.

Berg and co-workers begin the drive late each summer, he says. “We ask everybody to donate $100. Most of them do – from the laborers to the president. With that money we buy toys and back-to-school stuff like crayons, pens and colored pencils.”

For five years Joe Bauer, an Ameren retiree, has crafted wooden cars and fire trucks and given them to cancer patients.

by Voss: “I challenged John and his coworkers to raise $15,000 and told them we would match that gift. Of course they met the goal, and we matched the gift.”

Ameren serves much of the same region as SSM Cardinal Glennon, most of eastern Missouri and southern Illinois.

Ameren has 9,000 employees and therefore many families with children who may someday require the care of SSM Cardinal Glennon.

“My heart goes out to the kids who are patients of Cardinal Glennon and their families,” Voss says. “I hope the families find comfort in the fact that the doctors, nurses and hospital staff – right here in our own community – are world-class. Ameren supported another partner of the medical center, the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows in Belleville, Ill., and its Way of Lights Christmas display. Ameren’s Corporate Charitable Trust made a generous donation supporting both charities that came together during the Christmas season.

The Way of Lights began the season in November with a ceremonial flip of the switch. Turning on the lights were Ron Pate, vice president of operations and technical support for Ameren Illinois, and Hailstone joined by Cardinal Glennon patients.

“Shining more than 1 million lights here reminds us to focus on what really matters in life,” says Pate.

“Pride in our communities and giving back is a long-standing tradition of Ameren,” Voss says. “By partnering with Cardinal Glennon and Our Lady of the Snows, we are able to focus on making the lives of children brighter this holiday season.”

The center follows about 200 cancer patients, some in intensive stages of therapy, others returning for annual follow-ups.

leeper has watched patients grow from toddlers and teens to college students and married adults. “I think all of us who work here consider ourselves lucky to be around these kids and their families,” she says. “We bond with them. We remain in their lives for years. They teach me something every day. Their fortitude, stamina and inner strength are amazing.”

This colorful corner of the medical center was named the Bob Costas Cancer Center in 1998 to honor the renowned broadcaster whose efforts over the past 25 years have contributed immensely to its growth. The 25th Bob Costas Benefit will be held Saturday, April 20, at the Fabulous Fox Theater. Previous benefits have raised more than $11 million for cancer care and other diseases treated at the center.

One of Sleeper’s patients is Mackenzie Woelbling, 13, who has been coming to the Costas Center for 10 years.

“I count Dawn as one of my best friends in the world,” says Shana Woelbling, Mackenzie’s mother. “That woman has helped me through every major milestone in my adult life. These doctors and nurses take the time to get to know you personally. A real connection is formed.”

Many Costas Center staff members have held their jobs for decades and followed patients throughout their lifetimes.

Brian Overberg, 32, and a married father of three, was diagnosed with leukemia in 1981—when he was 20 months old—and remained in treatment for four years. “When I was diagnosed, the form of leukemia I had was given a 50-50 survival rate. Fortunately, I didn’t have any relapses. I don’t remember much about my time there in those years. My parents told me about three other families who were in treatment when I was. All of those children passed away,” he says.

Overberg pays annual visits to a longterm follow-up clinic that monitors the health of former patients and gathers data that may benefit future patients. He has seen some of the same caregivers since he was a little boy, he says. “The relationships that formed were more than just patients and doctors and nurses.”

The hematology/oncology division was outgrowing its quarters when a renovation project delivered its current child-friendly home, built with support from the annual Bob Costas Benefit.

Costas began supporting cancer care at the center in 1989. The benefit began as a celebrity roast that evolved into a night of music and comedy at the Fox Theater. Costas’ connections in sports and entertainment circles have enabled him to recruit stars such as Jerry Seinfeld, Billy Crystal, Jay Leno, Dennis Miller, John Goodman, Cedric the Entertainer, Bob Costas with patient Lindsey Meglio at the 1997 ground-breaking ceremony for the Bob Costas Cancer Center.

The Bob Costas Chair of Pediatric Medicine was endowed by the governors to enable the medical center to recruit an esteemed specialist. The chair is held by William Ferguson, M.D., division director of hematology/oncology and a professor of pediatrics at Saint Louis University School of Medicine and medical director of the Bob Costas Cancer Center.

When Ferguson’s career began, the expected success rate for childhood leukemia treatment was 50 percent. “We thought we were doing pretty well. One of the people I was training with hoped that someday we would get all the way up to 75 percent.”

Reality has far exceeded those hopes, he says. “The current national data place the five-year survival rate for a child diagnosed with cancer today at about 85 percent. For some cancers, the cure rate is now over 90 percent.”

His mentor, he says, “is as surprised as I am. Those of us with a few gray hairs still remember the days when we lost half of our patients. Many younger physicians now view a relapse or a patient death as an unusual event.”

“The Costas Center welcomes about 70 newly diagnosed oncology patients a year,” said team leader Kristen Lange, R.N. The center also treats patients with blood disorders such as sickle cell anemia and serves as the hospital’s outpatient infusion center for children with other diseases.

“Our patients range from three months to 20 years old,” Lange says. “Our kids can come in as often as five days in a row. Their average treatment time is two to four hours, but some kids are here all day. We have very long days. We needed more space, so last summer we opened on Saturdays, giving us six days a week.”

Mackenzie Woelbling was 3 when she was referred to the Costas Center.

She is undergoing cancer treatment for a fourth time due to Li-Fraumeni syndrome, a rare disorder that increases her risk of developing several types of cancer.

“It is so rare, there is not much information on it,” says her mother, Shana. “The Li-Fraumeni compromises one of the genes that determines cancer.

In December, she had a partial hip replacement because of the osteosarcoma that her doctors caught in August. She has several more months of treatment ahead of her, but she is doing very well now.”

“Mackenzie’s nurse, Dawn Sleeper, and her doctor, Christopher Hugge, M.D., are her best friends,” her mother says. “She has had so many surgeries and procedures, her circle of trust has gotten smaller and smaller. On the inside of that, it is always Dawn and Dr. Hugge. They have such a bond, they don’t need to ask me how Mackenzie is feeling. They just know.”

“The tumor had completely engrossed her kidney and adrenal gland.

The surgeons removed them both and about a dozen lymph nodes,” says her mother, Tara. “She had six rounds of chemotherapy, followed by a bone marrow transplant, followed by radiation. There were periods of time we were here five days a week. At one point she was hospitalized for six and a half weeks.”

Maggie has resumed life as a preschooler, her mother says, and has gained honorary relatives in the Costas Center. “She is like a whole new person.

The Cardinal Glennon staff became a second family to us. The doctors and nurses on the fourth floor and in the Costas Center are wonderful. It is obvious that they really care about these kids.”

Karen Imperiale, R.N., has been a Costas Center nurse since 1984 because of patients like Maggie.

“I have been seeing Maggie since she was diagnosed. She had a very aggressive disease, so her treatment was also very aggressive,” Imperiale says. “Maggie spends a lot of time with us. She is a delight. We love her.”

There is nothing better than making the kids giggle or laugh when they come in and know they are going to have a hard day. If you can brighten their day a little bit, they are going to be much more accepting of their treatment.”

Maggie is participating in the clinical trial of an investigational drug intended to prevent recurrence of neuroblastoma in patients who are in remission. SSM Cardinal Glennon is one of eight pediatric centers contributing to the trial.

The Costas Center recently received a $168,115 grant from the St. Baldrick’s Foundation to enable two clinical research nurses to manage patient participation in clinical trials. St. Baldrick’s raises funds for childhood cancer care through pledges from volunteers who agree to have their heads shaved as a symbol of support for patients who lose their hair during chemotherapy.

Dennis O’Connor, M.D., first cared for children with cancer at SSM Cardinal Glennon in 1969 when he was chief resident and cancer was a nearly hopeless diagnosis. Helping the patient’s family through the experience often became the end goal.

“When I was chief resident we had the first child to survive leukemia in our institution. A research article suggested that 15 percent of children with leukemia, the most common childhood cancer, were going to survive a new treatment,” says O’Connor, an SSM Cardinal Glennon pediatrician and emeritus professor of pediatrics at Saint Louis University School of Medicine.

The early days of O’Connor’s career were accompanied by snowballing progress in cancer treatment. “There was a new concept called ‘total therapy.’ Rather than giving a drug until the children failed and then giving them another drug, five drugs were given over an extended period of time.

Those drugs are still key drugs today but we have different ways of giving them.”

“In the 1970s and 1980s we started seeing marked improvements,” says Gordon Gale, M.D., who came to SSM Cardinal Glennon’s oncology staff in 1981.

Bob Costas is a 24-time Emmy Award winner who has anchored broadcasts of the world’s biggest sporting events, including 10 Olympic Games. A native of Queens, New York, he began his professional career at KMOX-AM in St. Louis doing basketball play-by-play for the old Spirits of St. Louis. From there he handled numerous other assignments at the station. Since joining NBC in 1980, he has appeared prominently in the networks coverage of professional baseball, football, basketball, golf, hockey and horse racing.

Costas has been named “National Sportscaster of the Year” eight times. In 2012 he was elected into the National Sportswriters and Sportscasters Hall of Fame and received the Walter Cronkite Award for Distinction in Journalism. His work has gone beyond sports with critically-acclaimed interview programs on NBC and HBO, as well as regular contributions to NBC News.

In November, Costas was inducted into the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame at a banquet benefiting SSM Cardinal Glennon.

He has been a member of the Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation Board of Governors since 1993.

Gale lauds not only the increasing success of oncology care but also advances in making treatments less stressful. “When I started giving chemotherapy, all the children had to get a needle stick. That was traumatic for the child, the doctors, the nurses, everybody. The kids would dread coming to see us. They knew they were going to get stuck someplace.”

Many steps have combined into the giant leaps forward in cancer outcomes, he says. “We can give more intensive treatment because we can support children through periods of low blood counts in a way that we couldn’t 25 years ago. We have found combinations of drugs that work better for particular tumors. We have the ability to biologically define groups of kids who need more intensive treatment and groups of kids who can get by with less intensive treatment.”

Future advances may come from treatments targeted at mechanisms within cancer cells. “If we can target abnormal

Senior doctors express wonderment and appreciation that oncology has come so far that it also can devote attention to minimizing side effects of treatment and helping the kids stay in school.

“We think of the whole risk-benefit of care,” O’Connor says. “We have to know about the side effects that are going to happen 30 years from now. Back then it was a guess. We are learning more as time goes by.”

Now patients are surgically fitted with a port that can be used for blood draws or connected to medication lines for drug administrations during their months of therapy. Children undergoing procedures can be sedated so they miss the experience.

“We used to do procedures to the children while they were awake,” Gale says. “Now when they are going to have a procedure, they really don’t care. They know they will be asleep and it won’t hurt.”

Brian Overberg was one of Gale’s first patients. The Overberg family stays in touch and invited him to Brian’s wedding.

Ferguson recently received a letter from the mother of a patient he treated for leukemia 25 years ago. “He has graduated from college and has a family. Hearing from those patients is one of the things that gets us up in the morning,” he says.

“I was interested in oncology because I thought it was an opportunity to help kids who were really sick, and have a long-term relationship with them.”

Greater understanding of genetics will be helpful, too. “Right now the amount of data is overwhelming,” Ferguson says. “It is going to require a lot of computer work to turn data into useful information. It is

“It is humbling to see these kids with their bald heads as they are hooked up to IV poles and getting chemotherapy,” Lange agrees. “They are dancing or making Christmas cards. They just keep going.”

“We have our sad times – I’m not denying that,” Lange says. “Overall, we have a light-hearted atmosphere. The kids rule this area. They know where the Xbox connects and where they can eat and can’t eat. They act like they own the place. It is like a big house. It really is.”

The Bob Costas benefits have enabled SSM Cardinal Glennon to provide patients with a friendly, comfortable second home that they are likely to visit for years.

“It is nice to have a facility that kids enjoy coming to,” says Ferguson. “What makes the Costas Center a special place is the staff. It takes a special person to come in every day and see kids when they are not feeling well. This is the most dedicated group of people I have ever had the honor of working with. That is what makes this a really great cancer center.”

an angel ave you ever felt as if you’d met an angel? You know—someone who comes into your life, has such an impact on you, fills your life with goodness and sets the standard for the type of person you hope you can be to others.

Sue Schaffer of High Ridge, Mo., is certain that her dear friend Vicki Dawdi was, is and always will be an angel to those whom she inspired and those in whose lives she made a difference before losing her battle with breast cancer. “If there was ever an angel, it was Vicki,” Schaffer says.

Immediately drawn to Dawdi’s fun-loving nature after meeting her in 2003, Schaffer quickly discovered a kind-hearted, faithfilled individual with whom she became fast friends, and shared an abundance of happy times and treasured memories. Describing Dawdi as a “living saint,” Schaffer recalls the kindness Dawdi displayed for children awaiting adoption. “She helped a lot of kids—kids without families and no one to take care of them. She’d find out when their birthday was and have a birthday party for them,” Schaffer says.

When Dawdi passed away in May 2012, Schaffer grieved the loss of her best friend and pondered what she could do to carry on the good works that had touched so many lives. “I loved her so much, and I wanted to help out and do something like Vicki did—for kids, especially,” Schaffer says.

The quilted blankets that fold into an attached pocket for use and storage as a pillow had been wildly popular, well-used and highly treasured within her family. When her 31-year-old grandson approached her this year to ask whether she could repair the quillow she’d made for him years ago, Schaffer realized a wonderful opportunity: a smaller-size quillow for children—comfy, cozy and made with love.

Convinced that child-size quillows

Schaffer’s living room was filled with quillows. “When the room gets full, that’s how I know it’s time to make a delivery!” she says. By Christmastime, Schaffer had sewed and delivered 225 quillows in a special 36- by 45-inch size for SSM Cardinal Glennon patients.

Time and materials for more than 200 quillows in less than five months— just how does Schaffer manage it all? From start to finish, the quillows are gifts over and over again. She and 81-year-old friend Bert (“She’s got a heart of gold,” says Schaffer) make what they call weekly “mall shopping” excursions during which they scour thrift shops to purchase supplies like sheets and other material with kid-friendly motifs or animated characters. The labor for each quillow is on Schaffer’s time card and is—of course—a labor of love. “It’s all about Vicki…I do it all for her and the goodness she shared with so many people,” she says.

Currently retired from more than 25 years in banking, raising three children and spending a few years as a gift shop owner in Kimmswick, Schaffer has her share of challenges. “I’ve got fibromyalgia, diabetic neuropathy and restless leg syndrome, but the quillows give me a distraction from all that. Every family has its problems, and I live by the Serenity Prayer—it took me a long time to get to that point,” she says.

Schaffer, who spends a great portion of her day sewing quillows and often gets up in the middle of the night, calls quillow-making her therapy. “If I’m having a bad night and the pain in my legs wakes me, I just get up and start sewing. I think about Vicki while I’m sewing, and I hope that a little one is going to enjoy this blanket. You know, it’s helping the kids, but it does so much for me. You just have no idea what it does for me,” she says.

With the Foundation’s seal of approval, Schaffer started sewing…and sewing… and sewing. Within a few months’ time,

As Schaffer’s family witnessed the joy she received from her quillow project, they too became involved. “My son and daughter-in-law saw me ripping out seams and getting frustrated with the machine I had when I started. They bought me a high-end sewing machine like you never saw!”

“They joke about how much I sew — they’ll call and say, ‘What’cha doing, Mom?’ And, I say, ‘Guess!’ They always know exactly what I’ll be doing,” Schaffer says.

Stan the Man

O

ne of the most well-known sites in St. Louis is the Stan Musial statue at Busch Stadium. Another monument to “Stan the Man” stands along Grand Boulevard at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. A large wing of the hospital, rising above the current entrance to the Dan Dierdorf Emergency and Trauma Center, was built thanks to the work and dedication of the man who wore number “6.”

Musial retired from the St. Louis Cardinals in 1963 with three World Series rings and recognition as one of the greatest hitters in baseball history. His plaque was erected in the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1969.

Musial continued to be an active and beloved part of the community until his death on Jan. 19 at the age of 91. One of his favorite causes was helping the kids at SSM Cardinal Glennon.

In 1976 a press conference was held at the hospital to announce a $5-million fund-raising campaign to build additional facilities for emergency room care and outpatient visits. The chairman of the drive, photographed with one of those World Series rings, was Stan Musial.

“I’ve certainly been impressed with the hospital’s pioneer work in the fields of

genetics, blood disorders, problems of the newborn, heart surgery and viral diseases, just to name a few,” Musial said at the event.

“I wish everybody in St. Louis could see for themselves what tremendous work is being done in this hospital.”

The new building held enlarged emergency rooms, a same-day surgery center, a new ambulatory care center and expanded laboratory and radiology facilities.

“The Man” continued to support the medical center after the successful building campaign. He often visited patients and signed autographs. One of his four children, Richard, served on the Board of Governors from 1982 to 1986.

Musial was a celebrity guest at the first Bob Costas Benefit for cancer patients at SSM Cardinal Glennon. He appeared at the benefit three times, sharing the stage with fellow baseball legends Hank Aaron, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle and Ozzie Smith.

In addition to sharing jokes and memories, he served as a musical guest. With just a little bit of urging, Stan would reach into his coat pocket for his ever-present harmonica and offer a rousing rendition of his favorite song, “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.”

Cardinals fans can honor Musial’s memory and his deep dedication to children through the 2013 Homers for Health program. A 7-foot “#6,” will be displayed in the hospital that he helped build. The display will bear the names of all Cardinals fans who pledge $6 or more to this year’s program.

“What a great way to honor his memory and make a difference in the lives of kids,” says St. Louis Cardinals left fielder Matt Holliday, who is the lead spokesman for Homers for Health. “The best way to honor Stan the Man is do something for someone else because that’s what he always did.”

Lights and Low-Dose Radiology Make a New Suite just for Kids Magnetic resonance imaging did not exist in any hospital, anywhere, less than three decades ago.

Now it is an essential component in the treatment of many medical and surgical diagnoses.

The technology, also known as MRI, produces wonderfully-detailed, three-dimensional images of the body’s structures. The latest generation of MRI machines, one of the first in the region, has been installed in the new Imaging Center at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center.

also holds two computed tomography (CAT or CT) scanners that create advanced images with lower doses of radiation than previously possible.

“The imaging suite was built with features that put children at ease and distract them during scans that may last three to four hours,” says Nathan Bennett, team leader for imaging. A wall of dancing lights, activated by a motion sensor, welcomes patients. Colored gel tiles in the floor change shape as a child steps on them. A waiting area allows parents to relax nearby.

“There is a television screen on the ceiling so the child can watch their favorite video while they are resting on the exam table,” he says. “We also can make the lights change colors and do movement, anything to keep the child distracted. Many children

are anxious when they are away from their parent.”

Some children require sedation or anesthesia for their scans. A hallway of six private rooms allows patients and parents to relax – and watch a video – while the sedation takes effect.

For patients who are awake or are not sedated when they reach the MRI or CT machine, there is a video that demonstrates the procedure they are about to undergo, Bennett says. “It reduces their anxiety by showing them that the procedure will not hurt.”

Also, he says, “The same nurse greets them, takes them to their procedure and remains with them throughout recovery.”

The imaging center’s technology is younger than many of the doctors who utilize it, but it has become crucial in maintaining the standard of care that they demand.

“How would we do neurosurgery without MRI? You can’t ask that question in the 21st century. The number of neurosurgical operations we do and their complexity have increased dramatically.

That requires advanced imaging. MRI is a must,” says Samer K. Elbabaa, M.D., FAANS, FACS, director of pediatric neurosurgery at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center.

“The new MRI machine gives us a very detailed anatomy of the normal brain and abnormal findings. It is much more detailed and has software upgrades that allow us to look into the blood vessels and brain tract fibers in a more specific and detailed manner,” says Elbabaa, an assistant professor of neurosurgery at Saint Louis University School of Medicine.

“It makes better images for the neurologist and the surgeon and enables us to provide patients with better care for more complex problems.”

Magnetic resonance imaging utilizes a magnetic field and pulses of radio wave energy to produce detailed images of structures within the body.

SSM Cardinal Glennon installed its first CT scanner in 1984 and its first MRI unit in 1989.

He began caring for children with cancer in 1969 when he was chief resident.

“There were no CT scans, no MRIs,” he says. “There were many things X-rays couldn’t show us. We couldn’t see the liver, we couldn’t see the kidneys very well, couldn’t see the brain at all. We frequently had to guess at what was there. The new imaging capabilities have made a huge, huge difference.”

“Today’s young physicians would presume we have had CT scans and MRI since Hippocrates,” O’Connor says.

(Hippocrates, a Greek physician born about 460 B.C., is considered the father of western medicine.)

“Before MRI, surgery was suboptimal and patients suffered because of the inability of the surgeon to identify an accurate anatomy,” Elbabaa adds.

The newest MRI scanner at SSM Cardinal Glennon is a General Electric 3.0T. The label “3.0T” refers to the device’s three-Tesla magnet, which is becoming the new standard in hospital diagnostic imaging. The 3.0T MRI is joining the medical center’s existing 1.5T unit to increase scheduling flexibility.

The 3.0T scanner entered service as the new imaging wing around it was still under construction.

“When I saw images for the first patients, they looked very nice and crisp,” says Martin N. Reis, M.D., of the department of radiology at SSM Cardinal Glennon. He specializes in neuroimaging, the study of the nervous system and brain.

“With a higher magnet strength there is more signal so the image quality will be superior,” Reis says. “There is better definition of structures. We can see the anatomy better and we can see lesions more clearly. There are lesions we will see clearly on a 3.0T scanner that we did not see on the 1.5T scanner.”

“It will improve the diagnostic accuracy of metastatic disease and characterizing certain types of brain tumors. We are going to see smaller and more subtle structures in the abdomen. It will help with the more specialized head 28 • Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation

and neck cases. We might be able to see some of the smaller muscles of the neck better or those surrounding the airway better. That will help the surgeons in planning their surgeries.”

While X-ray and its modern application, computer-assisted tomography (also known as CT or CAT) scanning are still needed for imaging of some structures such as bone, 3.0T MRI has some applications in musculoskeletal imaging, Reis says. “When we are doing a shoulder or a knee we are going to see meniscal tears or small abnormalities that might be passed over by a lower field-strength magnet.”

The best X-ray equipment available was installed when SSM Cardinal Glennon opened its doors in 1956.

The hospital’s first director of radiology, the late Armand Brodeur, M.D., was a graduate of Saint Louis University School of Medicine. He spent two years as chief of radiology for the U.S. Public Health Service before returning to St. Louis to establish the radiology department at SSM Cardinal Glennon.

Then it was one of just a few in the United States that specialized in pediatrics.

“The 1.5T scanner is fairly new and has been upgraded,” Bennett says. “There are some aspects of imaging that 1.5T

Brodeur led development of lowdose radiation procedures for children to minimize the side effects of X-rays on growing body tissues. He worked with the radiology equipment manufacturers to develop products and techniques that reduced radiation exposure by 83 percent.

The diagnostic imaging department at SSM Cardinal Glennon continues Dr. Brodeur’s leadership in low-dose radiation. “We participate in a campaign called ‘Image Gently,’” says Bennett. “That means all of our protocols scan kids lower than the national standards for low dosing.

Our protocols actually exceed the ‘Image Gently’ protocols.”

“Image Gently” is an initiative of the Alliance for Radiation Safety in Pediatric Imaging.

SSM Cardinal Glennon’s two 128-slice CT scanners can provide twodimensional or three-dimensional X-ray images at lower radiation doses than previously possible for a one-dimensional X-ray. The equipment also completes scans more quickly, reducing the numbers of children who will require sedation to keep them still during the procedure.

One CT scanner is located in the imaging center. The other remains next to the emergency department.

“We will be able to offer the lowest dose for radiation with CT scans in St. Louis. We will do a CT scan of the chest close to the same dose level as some X-ray exams,” he says. “That was unheard of until General Electric had a new product, called Veo, approved by the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) within the last six months. There may be three or four other Veos in the nation and now we are adding two more.”

Veo achieves low-dose imaging through “sophisticated algorithms and advanced computing power,” according to GE. For now SSM Cardinal Glennon’s main X-ray facilities remain in rooms near the Dan Dierdorf Emergency and Trauma Center. In a future phase of construction, some X-ray and ultrasound equipment will be consolidated in the West Tower suite to make them more convenient for the radiology staff, Bennett says. Some devices will remain next to the emergency department.

The center also maintains X-ray capability in the South Tower, for Ambulatory Care Center patients, and portable machines that can be taken into the emergency department or to in-patient rooms for children who are too sick for a trip to the Imaging Center.

“We have a totally digital, portable unit that can use Wi-Fi to send pictures from the emergency room or a patient room to the radiologists,” Bennett says.

“No film is needed, so the technologist does not need to take the film down and process it. It may take 30 seconds to send an image. Before it took 10 or 12 minutes to do the processing for an average X-ray.

Those minutes are critical when you have a very sick patient.”

The new radiology suite will benefit physicians and surgeons as well as patients, Reis says. “Having a better MRI magnet will improve diagnostic accuracy and lead to better outcomes.”

Having two CT scanners as well as two MRI scanners will enhance patient service, too, he says. “When we have two scanners, it allows us to more easily fit in emergencies because we won’t have to

She couldn’t do physical activities at all. Her lips would turn blue and we would have to tell her to sit down,” her mother says. “The third surgery was amazing.”

“After the third surgery she was pink,” her father agrees. “She turned into a regular kid.”

An estimated 35,000 to 45,000 children are born with congenital heart defects in the U.S. each year, an estimated 8 among every 1,000 births, according to the American Heart Association. From 25 to 50 percent of these children will require an interventional treatment. Congenital cardiovascular defects account for more than 24 percent of deaths resulting from birth defects, making them the most common cause of defect-related infant deaths.

In addition to the Dallas Heart Center, SSM Cardinal Glennon has opened three more state-of-the-art facilities for heart care in recent years – a cardiothoracic surgery operating suite, a cardiac catheterization lab and a pediatric hybrid cardiac suite (the only one in the region), all built with the assistance of thousands of donors.

SSM Cardinal Glennon was among the first hospitals to provide open-heart surgical procedures to treat congenital heart defects. In 1957, the then-new hospital’s surgical and anesthesiology staffs built the area’s first heart-lung machine, which allowed the heart to be stopped during an operation. Before this development, surgeons were able to do little for newborns with some heart defects.

Surgical reconstructions for increasingly complex heart defects have spanned the last four decades. During the last 15 years, the treatment of congenital heart disease has taken another step forward with the invention of interventional cardiology procedures that can correct defects without surgery.

Cardiac catheterization requires a small needle-stick into a blood vessel at the thigh, groin, elbow or neck. A thin, flexible sheath is guided through the vessels to the heart. A contrast dye administered to the blood stream enables the cardiologist to see the heart and vessels through X-ray images shown on a video monitor in the cath lab. Fine wires introduced through the sheath can measure blood pressures and, with increasing frequency, correct defective anatomy.

“Cardiac catheterization used to be simply a diagnostic procedure to get pictures and measure pressures inside the heart. It has evolved to therapy within the cath lab,” says Kenneth O. Schowengerdt Jr., M.D., director of cardiology and holder of the Wieck-Sullivan Chair of Pediatric Medicine at SSM Cardinal Glennon.

He is a professor of pediatrics at Saint Louis University School of Medicine.

“Stents are used to open vessels that are narrowed. Occlusion devices close a vessel that shouldn’t be there. There are specialized devices that close septal defects, or holes, between the chambers. Balloon procedures can open narrowed or stenotic valves. There are continually new studies of devices to be used in the cath lab,” Schowengerdt says.

Some of these devices permit the non-surgical closure of holes in the walls of the heart and vascular defects. The devices are woven from a continuous strand of fine, flexible wire that automatically expands to the desired shape once it reaches the correct location in the heart and is released from the catheter.

Some procedures involve two devices, made to fit opposite sides of a hole in the heart’s wall, that are fixed together by a screw. The wire mesh is covered with polyester fibers that promote blood clotting and provide a framework for epithelialization, or the growth of heart tissue over the device.

Such interventional cardiology procedures and medications will

continue to improve the outcomes for heart patients, sometimes with reduced need for surgery,” Fiore says. “Some of the defects we used to repair in the operating room are done in the operating room. They are going to be done in the cardiac catheterization laboratory by the cardiologists or by cardiologists working together with the surgeon.”

In recent years, interventional cardiologists and surgeons have realized the need for another evolution. Occasionally, an interventional procedure could not be completed because the defect was nearly impossible to access via catheterization.

In other cases, the surgeon realized the benefits of performing his work with fluoroscopy, which produces highlydetailed, real-time X-ray images that enable the cardiologist to guide his instruments.

Cardiologists—such as Al-Jureidini, and heart surgeons, such as Fiore and Charles B. Huddleston, M.D.—began planning what they called “hybrid procedures” that combine open-chest surgery and interventional cardiology.

Hybrid procedures have been performed for SSM Cardinal Glennon patients since 2007.

2012 St. Luke’s Faithful Healer Award Winners Saadeh Al-Jureidini, M.D., and M.Babak Rahimi, M.D., cardiologists in the Dorothy and Larry Dallas Heart Center, were honored with the medical center’s 2012 St. Luke’s Faithful Healer Award.

Al-Jureidini was nominated by a mother who praised his compassion and “natural, genuine kindness that calms your nerves and makes you feel at ease during the most difficult times.”

Rahimi also is a highly respected member of the medical center staff. His love for children extends beyond SSM Cardinal Glennon and the United States. He spends his vacations helping children with congenital heart disease who live in underserved countries and has brought many of them back to SSM Cardinal Glennon for life-saving surgeries.

St. Luke was the first Christian physician who became an evangelist and accompanied St. Paul on mission journeys. Luke was venerated by the Catholic Church as the patron saint of physicians and surgeons.

Light of Hope

A — a Gift of Gratitude any caregivers reveal “the healing presence of God” in their work, serving as a “light of hope” to patients and families. Many families express gratitude for that exceptional care with a financial gift to the medical center. The Glennon Ambassador’s Light of Hope program offers grateful patients and families the opportunity to acknowledge a caregiver through that financial gift.

When a family honors a caregiver as their “light of hope,” he or she receives an acknowledgment letter, Light of Hope pin and certificate of recognition. The first and milestone recognitions are presented publicly among peers, with plans in the works for multiple recognitions. What a wonderful way to recognize the excellent, compassionate care at SSM Cardinal Glennon, while enhancing the programs, services and facilities for future patients and families!

I

n November 2012, the Glennon Ambassadors introduced Break for HOPE (Helping Others through Partnership and shared Experience). From 5:30 to 7 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of each month, in the comfort of the medical center’s Ronald McDonald Family Room, parents who need a break, renewed hope or just a warm smile can join Glennon Ambassadors for camaraderie and support.

Camryn Akerson, 2012 Children’s Miracle Network Ambassador

A Life Changing

Miracle L ife changes when a baby comes into a family. Although work, social and sleep schedules are topsyturvy until the routine settles in, a baby brings the joy of new love to a

started changing lives before she was born.

Her parents Scott and Valerie Akerson attest to that. They consider themselves much better people because of the values and perspective they began developing before Camryn’s birth. Abiding Savior Lutheran School students are learning valuable lessons about the unique differences God creates in us.

Scott attests to that—he teaches there and witnesses those changes.

Throughout 2012, St. Louisans learned what a miracle looks, acts and sounds like as Camryn joyfully embraced her

CMN Executive Director Maria Langston wholeheartedly agrees with the saying, “If Camryn could go to the U.N., we could have the world taken care of in about five minutes! She’s an amazing spirit!”

That spirit and steadfast faith carried the Akerson family through Camryn’s first three years—12 surgeries, extended hospital stays and frightening times for the parents whose two older children experienced routine gestations and childhood years. The Akersons figured their third child would be life-changing, another of God’s enriching gifts. But,

an ultrasound revealed that they were expecting nothing short of a miracle, considering the anticipated anomalies and medical issues their baby faced.

From that day—months before she made

strutting her stuff (as best a tiny 6-year-old can) and belting out a Taylor Swift hit.

Who could have predicted the miracles and life changes resulting from the day the Akersons learned that their baby might not survive, walk, talk or see?

Coincidentally — or not—it was on that November anniversary date in 2011 that the Akersons got the call prompting the exhilarating whirlwind of ambassador duties. Valerie says that the past year as a CMN Ambassador has been exactly what Camryn needed: “Not that she doesn’t have a good attitude, but she gets down on herself sometimes. She changes the way people look at life—always has a smile on her face…and is really compassionate.”

When asked if Camryn was interested and whether the family could manage the schedule, Valerie says, “She was thrilled, of course…ready from day one!”

Serving as CMN ambassador gave Camryn a year of positive attention instead of the stares and questions she often encounters because of her physical challenges and honors her as Valerie feels it should—for who she is, her differences and how she has managed and overcome those differences. “This is positive recognition and has been an amazing experience this year,” Valerie says.

Although CMN, in its 25th year, labels each year’s ambassadors as “extraordinary,” Langston says all assume the

“Every year on the ultrasound anniversary, we celebrate. It’s the day we became very different people,” Valerie says. Last anniversary, Valerie shared her gratitude in an online blog saying, “I am thankful that seven years ago we were told that the child I was carrying was ‘medically imperfect’… [but] she is perfect to us! This is one of my favorite days… to treasure and remember how different Scott and I became this day.”

After Camryn’s birth, doctors confirmed what they’d suspected, and Camryn spent a month in SSM Cardinal Glennon’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) as her care team diagnosed and treated the manifestations of VACTERL-H syndrome.

Camryn experienced some, but not all of the syndrome’s characteristics, with vertebral anomalies, cardiac problems, a limb anomaly and hydrocephalus.

Now, with her hydrocephalus treated and controlled and her cardiac defects surgically corrected, Camryn’s continuing problems affect her right arm, ribs and vertebrae (for which she wears a back brace) and include what Valerie calls “a serious head tilt,” possibly requiring surgery in the future.

Anyone meeting Camryn knows there’s no stopping this tiny powerhouse of personality—none of her challenges limit her fulfilling roles as 2012 Miracle Ambassador for CMN, little sister to Chloe and Collin or classmate to 20 first graders; taking a hip-hop dance class or participating in her school’s talent show—

fundraising and promotional role in unique ways. “It’s really what you make of it. Camryn has truly lived up to the title of ambassador. She and her family are true advocates for the hospital and wonderful ambassadors for CMN.” With leeway to participate as much or as little as the ambassador’s interest and family schedule allow, Valerie says Camryn participated in nearly every appearance and fundraiser CMN scheduled. “She has danced at dance marathons, been in commercials, helped at our auction. Camryn has such a charm about her!”

In addition to radio appearances promoting CMN and its events, Camryn appeared at Wal-Marts, Dairy Queen and even threw out the first pitch at a Cardinals game.

As Camryn’s ambassadorship came to a close, she shared a few of her favorites: favorite CMN appearance—Miracle Treat Day at Dairy Queen; favorite Cardinals player—John Jay; favorite SSM Cardinal Glennon staffer—Julie; favorite school subject—Math. (No kidding.)

“She’s a gift to us. We’d never change anything…she’s truly a gift,” says Valerie.

And, a life-changing one at that.

The simple gestures – making eye contact, initiating conversation, shaking hands – reflect momentous growth in 14-year-old Joseph’s abilities since he was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and learning disabilities at the age of 4.

“He has really come a long way,” says his mother, Angela.

The Loucks, who live in Steeleville, Ill., were referred to the Knights of Columbus Developmental Center at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical 40 • Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation

developmental milestones.

“He didn’t talk or make eye contact,” Angela says. “We were frustrated. We didn’t know what was going on.”

Joseph was assessed by Rolanda Maxim, M.D., medical director of the Knights Center and Missouri Center for Autism Spectrum Disorder at SSM Cardinal Glennon and associate professor of pediatrics and psychiatry at Saint Louis University School of Medicine.

“Dr. Maxim put a diagnosis to our problem,” Angela says. “She got him on the right medication and therapies and

helped Joseph’s school do an outstanding job for him. He can hold communication, he has learned how to deal with anger, compulsiveness and anxiety. It has been a life-saver.”

About 2,000 children from eastern Missouri and southern Illinois are seen annually by the center’s growing staff. It evaluates and treats language disorders, cerebral palsy, intellectual disabilities, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and acquired and traumatic brain injuries. The fastest-growing diagnosis is autism, a developmental disorder that affects social and communication skills.

The increasing patient population has repeatedly outgrown renovations within the walls of the medical center. This spring the center moves to a new home, one block from the medical center’s main building. It was made possible by a major contribution from the Knights of Columbus of Missouri and Illinois, who have supported the center since its founding in 1982.

“The new Knights of Columbus Developmental Center is a testament to thousands of small acts of kindness,” says Dan Buck, executive director of Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation. “This project received more than $400,000 from Missouri and Illinois Knights of Columbus Councils and $100,000 from the National Knights office. Most of these dollars were generated one Tootsie Roll at a time from men standing on street corners and asking

“We will have a family room where parents can sit quietly or go if their child is tired or being difficult,” Maxim says.

The new center will have two observation rooms fitted with one-way mirrors so parents can watch their children from the next room. “If the parent is in the room, the child is going to pay attention to the parent and may not want to do his therapy,” says clinical nurse Elizabeth Miller, R.N., B.S.N. Children with autism may be overly sensitive to stimulation.

The new center will contain more and larger exam rooms. A conference room will facilitate staff meetings and parent education programs. A generous entrance suite will hold comfortable furnishings and space for children to play.

“We incorporated things that we have learned are difficult for the kids,” says Patricia Deutsch, R.N., M.S.N., lead clinical nurse. “These kids don’t like tight spaces. They don’t like stimulating colors, so we will have natural, neutral colors. We won’t have things that look medical on the walls. Kids can become very agitated when they see a medical cabinet because they think they are going to get a needle stick.”

Indirect lighting was chosen. “Children with autism can hear the flickering of fluorescent lights,” says Colleen Dolnick, the center’s family resource specialist.

“An exercise area will have mats and tubes and tunnels that the kids can crawl through. That incorporates movement into language development,” Deutsch says.

The new center offers more space for Higgins the therapy dog, who has shown great benefits in helping children relate to the outside world.

Autism spectrum disorder diagnoses are increasing partly due to an emphasis on detection by pediatricians. The Knights Center participates in research projects seeking other causes.

“We are seeing 1 in 100 children being diagnosed with autism with a ratio of 4 males to 1 female,” Maxim says.

“We think autism is sometimes a genetic disorder that affects the development of the brain before the baby is born.”

Early therapy has shown great promise. “Intervention in the first years of life could reverse the disorder. We can teach brain cells to make new connections,” Maxim says.

Autism diagnoses now are typically made at 18 months of age. The center staff is evaluating methods of determining if accurate diagnoses can be made at 6 or 12 months.

“Without the Knights of Columbus this would not have happened,” Maxim says. “They are very supportive of children with disabilities. We would not exist if it were not for them.” glennon.org Spring 2013 • 41

Dr. Casey Firlit

A great love for patients, a commitment to training

C

asimir “Casey” Firlit, M.D., devoted his life to improving the lives of children born with complex problems. His work ended suddenly on Dec. 18, when he passed away at the age of 73.

Firlit had been director of reconstructive urology, neurourology and fetal urology at SSM Cardinal Glennon since 2003.

He also was an adjunct faculty member at Saint Louis University School of Medicine.

“Dr. Firlit was a wonderful physician, teacher and mentor to many clinicians throughout the years,” says Sherlyn Hailstone, president of SSM Cardinal Glennon. “His kindness, compassion and ability to relate to the children he served were legendary. He left an impression on SSM Cardinal Glennon that can never be replaced.”

Dr. Firlit received his medical degree and a Ph.D. degree in pharmacology from Loyola University of Chicago. He became chief of pediatric urology at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago in 1979 and was professor of urology at Northwestern University before relocating to St. Louis.

Throughout his career, Firlit inspired many residents to pursue careers in pediatric urology. He also took great pleasure in creating innovative techniques to benefit his patients.

“Dr. Firlit had a passion for helping develop other surgeons,” said Dennis Vane, M.D., surgeon-in-chief at SSM Cardinal Glennon and chair of pediatric surgery at Saint Louis University School of Medicine. “He took his responsibility of cultivating the next generation of doctors very seriously. He was a thorough physician with a great love for his patients, and he was committed to instilling those same virtues in the doctors he trained.”

In a 2011 profile in St. Louis Magazine, Firlit described his passion.

Fernando de Castro, M.D.

Led the Cause for Poison Control

S

SM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center and Missouri Poison Center mourn the loss of Fernando Jose de Castro, M.D., who passed away May 9, 2012, in Ironton, Mo. Dr. de Castro spent many years as a dedicated and determined force behind the early efforts to elevate and advance SSM Cardinal Glennon’s regional poison center to the status and expertise of the statewide Missouri Poison Center that today handles more than 190,000 cases each year.

As director of ambulatory care in the early 1970s, Dr. de Castro’s interest in toxicology led him to partner with pharmacist Robert Jaeger in 1974 to eventually establish the medical center as a regional poison center. “I did the legwork, but Fernando was the door-opener. He was very instrumental in getting funding. He did a lot to establish recognition as a regional poison center,” Jaeger says.

Continuing his praise for Dr. de Castro’s pioneering work, Jaeger says that to de Castro’s credit, “…by the early ’80s, Cardinal Glennon had become the lead agency in the state.”

With gratitude for his service to the children and families at SSM Cardinal Glennon and throughout Missouri, we honor Dr. de Castro’s diligence and life-saving contributions to the Missouri Poison Center.

A Billikens Hall of Fame Hero

R

epeatedly performing a task can be habit-forming. The upside? It establishes a comfortable sense of routine.

The downside? The task runs the risk of losing its luster and becoming another of life’s unremarkable events. For Saint Louis University Billikens Hall of Famer, Bill Slattery, the event he plans, coordinates and oversees for every Billikens home basketball game shines brightly in his heart and makes him a hero many times over. He won’t admit to the hero role, but what Slattery will admit is how each of the hundreds of kids he’s helped affects him emotionally and fills him with gratitude— far from unremarkable and routine.

Slattery, an Air Force lieutenant, successful (retired) insurance marketing VP, father of three and grandfather of seven has created more than 20 years of magic for seriously ill or injured children, many from SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. From medical center staff, Slattery learns of a child who could use “a little lift” during a particularly tough time in his or her treatment regime. From there, he initiates the royal treatment that includes a family’s-worth of tickets to a Billikens home game, private parking, tour of the arena (often including a chat with some team

Halftime brings a special opportunity to sit on the home team’s bench and, to top off the evening, Slattery supplies the night’s honorary captain with a video of the introductory pre-game ceremony and presentation. To his knowledge, it’s the only program of its kind among major universities throughout the country.

“ I see these kids, and I realize I don’t have any problems… not like theirs. They’re so strong—they’re the heroes.”

“The parents are also heroes—and the doctors and nurses who take care of these kids,” says Slattery. “I’m just grateful I can supply the means for them to set aside—for a moment—what they live with every day.” Like many philanthropic individuals who are kindhearted by nature, Slattery says he gets more out of the event than the kids and their families do. “I feel so selfish sometimes because I get so much out of it. I see these kids, and I realize I don’t have any problems…not like theirs. They’re so strong—they’re the heroes,” he adds.

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation awarded a $168,115 grant to support research being conducted at the Bob Costas Cancer Center. This volunteerdriven charity funds the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and to give survivors long and healthy lives. Currently, the Costas Center participates in 60 clinical trials that are designed to find the most effective treatments with the least side effects.

“Saint Louis University and SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center actively work with the Children’s Oncology Group to promote more effective treatment

for childhood cancers,” said William Ferguson, M.D., the Costas Center’s medical director.

“The generous support of the St. Baldrick’s Foundation will allow more children in Missouri and southern Illinois to be part of this research effort that continues to dramatically improve the outlook for children with cancer.”

C

rystal Bartoe, 18, has undergone three bouts of treatment for cancer—the last two performed at the Bob Costas Cancer Center at SSM Cardinal Glennon— since her family moved from Georgia to Missouri.

Last May she underwent chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant that put her leukemia into remission.

“From the first second we walked in here, we have loved this place,” says her mother, Maria.

Before Christmas, Crystal decided to raise money to buy gifts for other cancer patients. She sold hot dogs in her mother’s restaurant in southeast Missouri and put out donation jars.

When she

brought nearly $600 to the hospital,

she met a patient who was then in the transplant unit.

“He had the same name as a cousin of mine who died from a tumor when he was two,” Crystal says. “The family really needed the help, so I gave the gift to them. After my transplant, I was so thankful I felt like I had to do something.”

Basketball Tournament

T

he 4th Annual Mary McDermott 3rd Grade Basketball Tournament was held at Immacolata School Gymnasium Dec. 28-30, 2012. The three-day event was filled with great competition, delicious food, fun, laughter and friendship. Under the direction of Steve Mattingly, a generous group of volunteers from the Immacolata Parish worked in partnership with Glennon Ambassadors Connie and Bill McDermott to host the event which raised more than $23,000 for the hybrid cardiac catheterization suite at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center.

Underwritten by Steve Holmes of Summit Strategies, the basketball tournament raised money through tournament fees, an ad book, concessions, admissions, a silent auction and monetary contributions by many friends of SSM Cardinal Glennon and the McDermotts.

Eight boys teams and eight girls teams participated, including a girls team from Vincennes, Ind. Their coach read about the tournament on the CYC website and realized it was being held to raise money for the medical center. He wanted to lend support so he took his team on the road.

The event brought parents, grandparents, relatives and friends out to watch, what was for many of the players, their very first basketball game. To date the Annual Mary McDermott Basketball Tournament has raised more than $80,000. The McDermotts will continue to work to honor the memory of their daughter Mary. Born with biliary atresia and heart abnormalities, Mary passed away unexpectedly in December 2008 at the age of 24. Their hope is that through Mary’s memory, this tournament will continue to grow and help other sick and injured children.

in the amount of $3,400 in honor of our son Philip’s 34th birthday on December

19th and in memory of Tom McClarty, Philip’s grandfather who passed away in March 2012. Philip was born on December 19, 1978, at the Delta Community Hospital in Sikeston, Mo. He immediately began struggling to breathe and his doctors knew he needed specialized infant care from a very special place. That place was SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center.

In 1978, there was no helicopter to transfer Philip. He traveled by ambulance and the doctors advised us that he could very well not reach the hospital in time.

Our families immediately began to pray that Philip would arrive in time and that the physicians, nurses and other medical personnel would be available with the skill to bring us a miracle. Obviously our miracle happened!

In 2008 Philip graduated from medical school at the University of Tennessee. In June 2012, he completed his anesthesia residency at the University of Alabama—Birmingham. He is now in practice in Dothan, Ala. working at Southeastern Alabama Medical Center. In 2013, a precious little girl named Ruthie was born, the fourth child of our son Philip and his wife Erin. Walking into the Southwestern Alabama Medical Center during the Christmas season immediately made me think of our amazing Cardinal Glennon experience almost exactly 34 years ago to the day.

Here is a special story I would like to share with you: Philip was born by cesarean section, preventing me from traveling to St. Louis for several days. My husband Pat and his father Tom left as soon as possible that day. After anxiously waiting for the tests to be completed and to be able to see Philip, Paw Paw Tom walked

into the nursery unit and told the nursing staff it was time to pray for his grandson.

All the nurses and staff immediately stopped, bowing their heads to join Tom in prayer for Philip.

Tom laid his hands on our son and prayed a prayer of healing for him and every baby there. Not one dry eye was left in that room.

We so appreciate the kind, considerate and loving care given to our son. Your nurses never failed to take my calls and would patiently explain all that was going on. No matter how many times a day I called, they were there to give me the reassurance I needed when I could not be there to hold my baby son. Knowing they were there to hold and cuddle him for me helped tremendously. But that is not the end of the story. Paw Paw Tom declined in health the last few years. In March he really began to struggle. It seemed as though everything was being done to keep him alive but there was no improvement only further deterioration.

Philip traveled back to Lilbourn Mo., met with Tom’s physician, talked to the family explaining what was happening and that it was time to let Paw Paw go. Philip arranged the hospice care and lovingly told his Paw Paw goodbye.

Tom’s funeral was truly a celebration of his life. Each of his four sons spoke a few minutes, sharing some of their favorite stories.

Though it was emotionally difficult, my husband Pat shared the Cardinal Glennon story and how much the people of Cardinal Glennon and his dad meant to him at that very difficult time.

So we want to once again send our special thanks to all of you at Cardinal Glennon and hope that you all have a blessed and happy year. Without you and your special care for one very sick little baby, we would be short one fine young man who is an amazing blessing to his family and to others he serves on a day to day in his medical practice.

I

t’s a labor of love to make something that may help a lonely child feel less lonely or feel entertained by finding the little puppies in the prints,” says Susan Calzone, chairwoman of “Cover Our Kids and More,” a program of the Bits-n-Pieces quilters’ guild.

The guild covers a wide swath of the St. Louis area. Most of its 168 members contribute in some way to the program, which sews hundreds of quilts annually.

“It started about 15 years when one of our members had twins who were hospitalized,” Calzone says. “We started making quilts to give to children and evolved to also making quilts for the elderly and a national program, ‘Quilts of Valor,’ which donates to returning wounded military members.”

SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center will be one of the guild’s primary beneficiaries in 2013, says Calzone, who volunteered as a candy striper at the center 30 years ago. “We are very proud of the number of quilts we donate and their quality as well.”

Love and Eddie Siemer Support

E

ddie Siemer is in remission and back in school nearly one year after beginning treatment for leukemia at the Bob Costas Cancer Center. A friend in his hometown of Teutopolis, Ill., has designed pink t-shirts to sell as a fundraiser for breast cancer care. She shared the design with Eddie, 16, who ordered shirts in orange, the leukemia awareness color.

He sold shirts, carrying the statement ‘Fear Nothing,’ to raise money to buy Child Life activities for patients at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. “We spent several long stays in the hospital and he thought it would be interesting to have things for teenagers to do to pass the time,” says his mother, Lisa.

The town of Teutopolis responded by helping Eddie raise $2,000.

“Eddie is doing very well.

He is in the maintenance phase of treatment, so we just go back to Cardinal Glennon once a month,” his mother says. “Around town we see orange t-shirts every day. It is very humbling, but it makes us feel the love and support around us.”

teve Ippolito has not forgotten the care he received in 1958, when he was 8 years old and SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center was nearly new.

“I had rheumatic fever and they kept me for three months. For a long time after that I had to go back every month to get a shot. They finally cut me loose when I was a lot older,” he says.

He has long been a donor to the center in appreciation for the health he has enjoyed throughout life. “I don’t know who paid for my care – 1958 was a bad year for my family,” he says.

Adam and Benjamin Morgenthaler 1993 NICU Patients College Students and Cardinal Glennon NICU Volunteers

I

t may not seem remarkable that Adam Morgenthaler came home from the hospital on his July 29 due date, except for the fact that he and twin brother Benjamin (Ben) were born on April 29, 1993, and spent three months in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. “Adam came home on his due date, but they kept Ben (who had two surgeries during his stay) another week,” says mom Cynthia Morgenthaler, who delivered Adam and Ben at 28 weeks weighing 1 pound, 15

ounces, and 2 pounds, 8 ounces, respectively.

Today, the healthy 19-yearolds are Saint Louis University freshmen and, thanks to a community service project during their high school senior year, the Morgenthalers have an unusual appreciation for the reason their mother has called them “miracle babies” all their lives. Throughout the 2011 school year, Adam and Ben each spent approximately 50 volunteer hours in the NICU performing various duties to help the staff, holding and rocking some of the tiny patients beginning their lives much the same as they did.

“They seemed so frail—at first I was afraid I would hurt them.

any doctors can pinpoint what inspired them to a medical career. Emily Goeke, 19, recalls a fourth-grade career path assignment for which she carefully wrote “d-o-c-t-o-r” (certain of the spelling) instead of “lawyer”— her intended answer, but one she feared misspelling. However, what most influenced Emily’s freshman pre-med status at Saint Louis University began mid-August 2007 when the stellar athlete experienced flu-like symptoms.

“I had really never been sick.

nurses taught us how to hold them,” Adam says.

Adam says he and brother Ben hadn’t realized how tiny premature babies are, nor the delicate life balance in which they lie. “I didn’t realize the impact until I started working at the NICU and saw what it was like. It really put things in perspective…I didn’t know I was that sick.”

In addition to the assistance they provided for the NICU staff, and the comfort they brought to the tiny patients they served, Adam and Ben provided an unexpected measure of hope for the parents of the tiny newborns as they witnessed first hand what the result of the compassionate care at SSM Cardinal Glennon looks

like 19 years later. “We brought in our photo album, and I think it helped the parents to see that we were that small, and here we are today,” Adam says.

days later still had such intense stomach pain that they did an ultrasound and discovered fluid in my abdomen,” Emily says.

With escalating pain and difficulty breathing, Emily was admitted to SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center’s pediatric intensive care unit. “They were amazed she walked in the doors. She went downhill rapidly…they took her to surgery, removed her appendix and drained a liter of fluid off each lung and from her abdomen,” says mom Jessica Goeke.

For 84 days, Emily battled infection, a blood clot in her leg and complications that required another eight surgeries. She lost nearly 50 pounds, most of her hair and faced rigorous rehabilitation. “Her surgeon

said it was good that Emily was athletic, strong and very healthy.

Otherwise, she might not have made it,” Jessica says.

Emily recalls missing her favorite holiday—Halloween— and nearly half of eighth grade.

Despite the challenges, the Goekes have extraordinary

fondness and gratitude for the medical center’s staff. “I loved the nurses we had and the way the doctors put things in such a way that I understood what was going on,” Emily says.

“Cardinal Glennon has been such a blessing for our whole family…Emily had a wonderful, compassionate team. They’re still so special to me,” Jessica adds.

Emily says her hospitalization influenced her interest in science and pursuit of medical school through SLU’s Medical Scholars Program. “My experience definitely had an effect on where I see myself.

I’m interested in pediatrics and leaning toward ICU. I know the environment intimately, and that experience has had a big influence on me.”
