Dear Friends of Cardinal Glennon, It is with a grateful heart and a complete sense of awe that we share this 10-year report with our medical center staff and supporters. It has been an inspiring endeavor to look back on the incredible impact our donors have made at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center since the turn of a new century. When we review the past decade, we realize that thousands of young lives have been saved, healed and cured because so many in our community chose to care! They said “Yes!” to our faith-filled mission to treat all sick and injured children who come to us, regardless of their family’s circumstances. We have the greatest job in the world at the Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation. We have the privilege to come to work every day to interact with the most giving, most caring and most dedicated donors and volunteers. Our Board of Governors, a team of dedicated community volunteers, brings a level of commitment and leadership that allows us to dream big and be bold in our strategic planning. These influential men and women see Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center as a beacon of hope. They see the fruits of their labor and the rewards of their generosity in the eyes of our NICU infants, in microscopic heart surgeries, in cutting-edge cancer care and through so many other life-saving procedures and programs. Recently, a long-time Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation donor said, “I feel as if I’m an active part of making miracles happen.” She had just learned about a new life-saving surgery in our St. Louis Fetal Care Institute — a minimally invasive procedure performed on a baby still in his mother’s womb. No one could have said it any better. We are all called to be a part of God’s miracles. While we often don’t know His plan for us or the path of our journeys, we do know that the next decade holds many more opportunities for our donors to step forward in faith and support Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. It is that unyielding support that allows us to seek more innovation, more growth and more ways to reveal the healing presence of God. We will see more miracles! Sincerely,

Message of thanks When SSM Cardinal Glennon opened the doors to patients in 1956, it was an extremely innovative hospital: It was the first hospital in the country specifically devoted to the care of pediatric patients, and training physicians to care for them. Our generous donors, who raised money for 10 years to build SSM Cardinal Glennon, gave the region’s families an enormous gift that continues to benefit thousands of children today. Our donors are just as critical now to our mission as they were 65 years ago, and they continue to open doors into the future of pediatric health care. We are grateful to the Foundation’s Board of Governors, whose leadership and guidance have given hope and healing to our patients by funding critical departments, programs and technology. By partnering the latest technology in health care with the expertise of our physicians and nurses, we provide safer care, faster healing and healthier futures. From an entire treatment center to a memorial donor wall, the Foundation’s donors have built world-class facilities and fostered our mission. For example, The Dorothy and Larry Dallas Heart Center, which opened in 2009, was supported by Larry Dallas’ donation in memory of Dorothy Hennessy Dallas. The center treats young patients with the latest advancements in cardiology care. And like the rest of the hospital, the center is designed to be child and family-friendly. Vibrant artwork and bright colors in exam rooms and hallways replace sterile, white walls; patients can watch their favorite DVDs on flat-panel TVs. Improved technology provides fetal echocardiography testing and 3-D views of the heart, allowing doctors to see with more detail and clarity. This kind of care that sets us apart is only made possible by our generous donors. Innovation and technology is very important, yet it is our staff’s unsurpassed dedication to the children and families they serve that truly makes SSM Cardinal Glennon a unique place. Research has proven what we experience every day: Children are best treated in a hospital that focuses totally on pediatric care. We share in this great privilege and vision with you: to care for the youngest and sickest among us with compassion, dignity and excellence, using the many gifts and talents that God has given us to serve others.

All great achievements in the non-profit world are built around quality partnerships in which multiple community organizations are working together. At SSM Cardinal Glennon, we have been blessed by thousands of individuals and hundreds of organizations, all saying “Yes“ to our mission over the past decade. In recent years, the largest contributions have come from generous bequests, including two extremely generous estate gifts from Alan and Edith Wolff and Larry and Dorothy Dallas. Combined, these two families donated more than $8 million to improve our treatments, technology and facilities. We also must recognize our long-term partnership with the Dana Brown Foundation, Children’s Miracle Network and the Missouri Knights of Columbus. The impact of these organizations is seen daily in the lives of our children who are healed, cured and are living productive lives thanks to the love and support of our community.

The Glennon Youth Council is made up of kids and young adults who are past patients and their siblings. These young Glennon Ambassadors‘ role is to lend their “kid perspective” to hospital projects. One of their first tasks is to give feedback on what should go into the new playground area at the hospital. The Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation invests more than $160,000 in seed funding to begin a new cord blood cell research program (a non-controversial stem cell) which grew into one of the largest public umbilical cord blood banks in the world. To date, the Cord Blood Bank has provided adult cells to more than 1,800 transplant patients globally.

to Glennon Café The world of hospital food took a drastic turn for the better. The Foundation
invests $3.9 million to completely renovate the medical center cafeteria for patient families and staff. Glennon Café is considered by many as the best hospital cafeteria in the region!

The Board of Governors completes a 5-year vision and campus capital improvement.

The two-phase to build the new four-story addition that greatly increases Cardinal GlennonÕs capacity to serve more children, both in-patient and out-patient. This significant Foundation investment also included funding for a new and improved all-private Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, making it one of the largest NICUs in the Midwest. In addition, the hospital also improved patient parking and has the ability to add additional floors to the new tower if needed in the future.

Just as it does each and every year, the Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation purchases special equipment to help our nurses and doctors stay on the cutting edge of technology. In
2009 alone, the Foundation spent more than $120,000 on equipment upgrades in the NICU and another $214,000 on improvements to physician offices around the hospital.
