Dear Friends of Cardinal Glennon, At Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation, we are blessed each and every day to witness the miracle of unselfish giving. We are continually honored and moved to see the great things that result when thousands of supporters give generously to a cause they love, cherish and believe in with such compassion. In 2013, for the third consecutive year, we enjoyed record donations to our mission. We had more donors to our mission and welcomed many first time contributors. We were blessed by more than 45 estate gifts and welcomed dozens more who became annuitants. The generosity and compassion shown for our cause was nothing short of amazing. Some donors give because their family has been directly touched by our mission; others give because they feel blessed that their family has not needed the lifesaving work of SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. But they all give knowing that their collective generosity will move our exceptional children’s medical center to the forefront of pediatric medicine. In 2013, our Board of Governors committed up to $2 million to help SSM Cardinal Glennon and Saint Louis University School of Medicine build up our signature programs and enhance our top performing service lines. The result of that investment is already paying great dividends. In 2013 our Dorothy and Larry Dallas Heart Center and Dana Brown Neonatal Intensive Care Unit were nationally recognized in the U.S. News & In 2013, for the third World Report annual rankings. consecutive year, we enjoyed Cardiology and Heart Surgery is again recognized in 2014 record donations to our mission. along with Gastroenterology, GI Surgery and Nephrology. These rankings would not be possible without the support of thousands of kind and generous people in our community who have helped raise these departments up to the world-class level they are today. Because of you and thousands of generous supporters like you, we continue to improve pediatric medicine and enhance the patient experience for every child who comes to us injured, ailing or battling a life-threatening disease. While our doctors, nurses and specialists continue to develop the very best treatments and procedures in pediatric medicine, our donors continue to raise the bar of charitable giving, making a perfect team joined together for one important mission. We pray that this impact report inspires you to step forward in faith and help us continue to build innovative, cutting-edge programs and services. Youth Opportunity Program Tax Credits SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center was once again awarded $125,000 in Youth Opportunity Program (YOP) tax credits for its Right Start Program. YOP tax credits yield two dollars for every dollar donated to help children overcome obstacles while providing opportunities for positive development. Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation marketed the credits, generating $250,000 to support Right Start’s behavioral-health services.

Homers For Health In the second year of this home run pledge program, 2013 Homers for Health Co-Chairs Matt Holliday, David Freese and Allen Craig led Cardinal Nation to help support kids at SSM Cardinal Glennon. Powered by Peabody Energy, Homers for Health pledges came in from 38 states, D.C., Australia, China and Scotland. Now that’s a winner for kids!

Bob Costas Charity Benefit Celebrating 25 years in 2013, the Bob Costas Charity Benefit has raised $14,844,341 to benefit the Bob Costas Cancer Center at SSM Cardinal Glennon. We are grateful for Bob’s enduring commitment, along with the support of the Centene Charitable Foundation, and all of the marquee performers from the entertainment industry who donated their time and talents over the years!
The Infusion Center $770,000
The new Infusion Center located on the first floor of the medical center, has been completely renovated to help take the fear and anxiety out of treatments, transfusions and procedures for children of all ages.
A parent who used to struggle getting her young 4-year-old daughter to her weekly blood transfusions was delighted to see the new, renovated, magical underwater themed Infusion Center unveiled. “My daughter no longer sees it as a trip to the hospital for needles and medicine,” said the elated mom. “Now we arrive at Arial’s house,” in reference to the famous mermaid and underwater theme. The Infusion Center is the latest department designed and renovated by the 3-dimensional sculpting and design studio, Tivoli Too out of St. Paul, Minn. and supported by a variety of funders.

Glennon Sunday Each year, nearly 200 parishes from the St. Louis Archdiocese come together to support the Glennon Sunday parish collection that benefits the sick and injured children at SSM Cardinal Glennon. With the help of our volunteers and parish speakers, we have been able to help fund lifesaving treatment centers and programs, including the Pediatric Hybrid Cardiac Catheterization Suite and the Imaging Center.

Scoops of Fun This fun family event provides entertainment for all ages and is presented by Fifth Third Bank. The Development Board, comprised of area professionals who are dedicated to the mission of SSM Cardinal Glennon, hosts Scoops of Fun each year. Kids make their own sundaes and enjoy all the fun and activities of the day.
“These amazing child-friendly environments help make the patient and parent experience so much better,” said Sherlyn Hailstone, President of SSM Cardinal Glennon. “Our goal is to help distract the child as much as we can and make their healthcare as pain-free and stress-free as possible. This incredible, child-centered décor helps in delivering great care,” Hailstone added.

Held in August of 2013, the Inaugural Glennon Gallop was a huge success, raising $152,033 to support Danis Pediatric Center at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. Thanks to the 1,200 attendees who gathered in their finest whites to watch the fastest team sport in the world, The Danis Pediatric Center was able to make many enhancements to help continue to provide the world class medical care for which SSM Cardinal Glennon is known.

Dierdorf Pronger Golf Classic Board of Governors members and St. Louis fan favorites, former St. Louis football Cardinal, Dan Dierdorf and former St. Louis Blues defenseman, Chris Pronger come together each year for this charity golf classic at Boone Valley Golf Club. Proceeds support the Dan Dierdorf Emergency and Trauma Center at SSM Cardinal Glennon.

Led by the Glennon Guild and presented by Fifth Third Bank, 2,444 Glennon Cards were purchased in 2013, raising $122,200 to benefit SSM Cardinal Glennon. Additional sponsor contributions resulted in a total of $161,900 raised.
Rally Squirrel Safety Treehouse $328,112 The new Rally Squirrel Safety Treehouse was unveiled in October 2013 in the Dan Dierdorf Emergency and Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. Rally Squirrel, the hospital’s mascot, presented to the crowd his Rally theater and a touch screen monitor with a wide variety of games for all ages. The forest-themed area provides a happy and pleasant place for children and their families awaiting treatment in the emergency department. The safety treehouse also provides tools to educate parents in the areas of environmental safety, home safety, disaster preparedness and sports safety to
decrease the risk of pediatric injury. The area also offers digital custom home safety evaluations for families visiting the medical center. The safety area was supported by donors Mr. Robert Smith and the Arthur and Helen Baer Foundation, as well as Board of Governors members Dan Dierdorf, Chris Pronger and the Bodley Group, which has provided continuous support for the center through the Dierdorf Pronger Golf Tournament. TivoliToo created the space inspired by Rally Squirrel himself.

Employee Appeal The Employee Appeal asks all employees to pledge a donation from each paycheck to benefit our patients. In its second year, the appeal raised $79,795 to support critical programs at SSM Cardinal Glennon, including Child Life, Footprints, Social Services, the Children’s Fund and the Sr. Noreen McGowan Nursing Education Fund.

Thousands of members in our community participated in writing “Messages of Hope” to our patients. This year’s annual appeal was once again a huge success, bringing hope to our patients during the holiday season. Many of our donors made gifts with their messages of hope, brightening the lives of our patients.

Our Planned Giving program offers a variety of ways to honor or remember SSM Cardinal Glennon with a charitable gift. With up to an 11% return, our charitable gift annuity provides a stable source of retirement income. Many of our donors remember us in their Will through significant gifts. These sources provide additional support for the needs of children and families at the medical center.
Other areas YOU support Social Services
Footprints
Social Services helps our families address practical and psychosocial issues that impact their medical care. They coordinate with medical and nursing staff to assure that families have equipment, nursing care and medications needed for departure from the hospital. Social workers facilitate protocols for our victims of violence and child abuse cases, and they team up with legislators to help keep children safe statewide. Your donations help provide basic health care assistance, such as prescription drugs, meal tickets, transportation and other forms of support to our uninsured patients.
Footprints is a program of comfort and advocacy for families and children with complex medical illnesses. The Care Team includes physicians, nurses, social workers, chaplains, care coordinators, family members and others, with a goal of having the resources and support available so these children and their families can live full lives. Footprints staff works with families in the hospital and at home to identify issues which may become difficult, and advocate to see that those issues are resolved. Footprints staff provides immediate support for the family, assistance in talking with siblings and assistance with funeral options. Your donations support the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of children and their families.
Children’s Fund Donations to the Children’s Fund are used to address special needs of the hospital and our patients as they arise. This unrestricted fund allows for investing in special projects and programs at the medical center.
