At SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital, we provide world-class health care to all children, regardless of their family’s ability to pay. expanded programs. U.S. News and World Report ranked SSM Health Cardinal Glennon in three
pediatric specialties in the 2016-2017 Best Children’s Hospitals rankings: Cardiology and Heart Surgery, Gastroenterology, and Cancer. The Board of Governors sets aside $2 million each year to fund improvements to these signature programs and more. This would not be possible without the continuous support of donors like you. Since its inception in 2012, Homers for Health and K’s for Kids has raised $3.7 million for our patients. While we were sad to see Matt Holliday leave the St. Louis Cardinals organization, we are grateful to Matt Carpenter for stepping up to lead the program, along with co-chairs Jedd Gyorko, Trevor Rosenthal and Adam Wainwright. We also wish to thank our friends Bob Costas and comedian Justin Willman for helping us celebrate our 60th Anniversary at last year’s Glennon Glow event, which raised funds for inpatient and outpatient cancer services in The Costas Center. Dear Friends of SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation,
STARS PROGRAM The Foundation supported the STARS program in 2016 by funding an electronic database which expands medical record access to community hospitals, EMS and fire districts. STARS
connects local fire and EMS districts with children in their districts who have special health care needs. First responders receive specialized training from SSM Health Cardinal Glennon educators, on a variety of pediatric special needs. The goal is for emergency response personnel to have the most up-to-date, individualized data on each child in the event of a call to their home, so that they can provide skillful and immediate care. This saves time, reduces anxiety for children, parents and first responders and ultimately leads to better outcomes. Children who especially benefit from STARS are those with any atypical disease or syndrome, including significant developmental delay, seizure disorders, heart problems, mental health issues, autism spectrum disorders, as well as shunts and tracheostomies.

MUSIC THERAPY
In 2016, SSM Health Cardinal Glennon launched a music therapy program thanks to the generosity of our donors. Funding provided salary support for a full-time music therapist, instruments and the materials she needs to bring joy and the healing power of music to our patients. Our therapist uses evidence-based interventions to customize her approach based on each patient’s unique abilities and needs. Music therapy has proven to reduce stress and anxiety, provide relief from pain and discomfort, promote comfort and relaxation and provide opportunities for self-expression.
WARNER’S CORNER Warner’s Corner is a teens-exclusive space where patients can engage in fun activities to pass the time during their hospital stay. Named after NFL Hall of Fame and former St. Louis Rams Quarterback, Kurt Warner, the space is outfitted with a variety of games and St. Louis sports memorabilia. In 2016,
the Foundation provided funds to renovate the space, updating furniture and technology and adding a magnetic dart board, an air hockey/pool table and new gaming systems.
SHINING STAR SCHOOL Thanks to donations to the Shining Star School, we have been able to increase our staff to include two full-time teachers and expand our services for patients in the hospital.
In 2016, more than 1,000 children received educational support through individualized instruction and group activities. To create a sense of normalcy, our teachers work with hospitalized children to promote general academic development, social and emotional development as well as overall well-being. In addition, we now provide educational support to approximately 20 patients per month who come to SSM Health Cardinal Glennon for outpatient treatment, which causes them to miss part or all of their school day. Our teachers develop relationships with patients and their families and the kids look forward to attending school during hospital admissions.
Thanks to generous donations, patients are able to participate in unique STEM projects and activities that provide distraction from pain and anxiety and give children hope of returning to normal events.
PEDIATRIC EEG SYSTEM
In 2016, the Foundation funded a pediatric electroencephalogram (EEG) system, a test used to find problems related to the electrical activity of the brain. An EEG tracks and records brain wave patterns. Small metal discs with thin wires (electrodes) are placed on the scalp, and then send signals to the computer to record the results. Normal electrical activity in the brain makes a recognizable pattern. Through an EEG, doctors can
look for abnormal patterns that indicate seizures and other problems. Most EEGs are done to diagnose and monitor seizure disorders. EEGs also can identify causes of other problems, such as sleep disorders and changes in behavior. They are sometimes used to evaluate brain activity after a severe head injury or before a heart or liver transplant.

CHILD LIFE
Thanks to donor support, our Child Life specialists are incorporating therapeutic sensory integration tools to benefit patients with sensory processing disorders to promote positive coping skills. Sensory tools have proven to help regulate emotions, reduce anxiety and normalize the hospital environment for patients with diagnoses such as autism spectrum disorders, Down syndrome and cerebral palsy. Patients with sensory sensitivities are often overstimulated and experience high levels of stress when hospitalized. By using the right sensory tools and strategies, our staff is better
equipped to understand a child’s sensory signals and enrich their hospital experience. In addition, by offering appropriate sensory tools in a safe, healing environment, we can provide non-pharmacological ways to reduce stress instead of medicating patients.
3dMD FLEX 7 IMAGING SYSTEM Several major gifts enabled us to support the purchase of the 3dMD Flex 7 Imaging System. This non-invasive device
has seven cameras that take simultaneous images, which are combined to create high-precision three-dimensional surface images of a child’s face, head and torso with photo-realistic texture. 3dMD images enable our surgeons to assess children’s conditions more accurately, to plan surgeries and to monitor how well a child is doing after surgery. The system tracks imaging history over time, creating a visual record of how well the surgery sites are healing, how the child’s growth is affecting surgery and what future procedures may be needed. In addition, these images can be combined with imaging from CT scans and MRIs to create 3-D printed models that are used in surgery planning and education.
PATIENT BLANKET WARMERS Being admitted to a medical facility can be stressful for any patient. Not only are patients often faced with the uncertainty of their health and well-being, they are also forced to spend time away from the comforts of their home. To help make treatment and recuperation comfortable and relaxing, the Foundation provided blanket warmers to help increase body temperature and provide a sense of comfort and protection for our patients.
DOROTHY AND LARRY DALLAS HEART CENTER Thanks to the generosity of our donors, the Dorothy and Larry Dallas Heart Center reopened with a newly renovated and expanded space in December 2016. This expansion allows
the hospital to accommodate the growing demand of our pediatric cardiology program. It offers three additional exam rooms and two additional echo diagnostic rooms. The overall flow of the cardiology clinics has improved for the patient and providers, thanks to the additional exam rooms, diagnostic rooms and height and weight room. The Dallas Heart Center is a comprehensive heart center for children who come to us for critical, exceptional, nationally-ranked cardiology care. Our services include cardiac catheterization, a pediatric hybrid cardiac catheterization suite, electrophysiology services for patients with life-threatening arrhythmias, low dose imaging and seamless collaboration with other experts such as those in the St. Louis Fetal Care Institute.
ST. LOUIS FETAL CARE INSTITUTE The St. Louis Fetal Care Institute (FCI) at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon was formed under the principle that with advanced diagnostics, a team-oriented approach and highly-skilled, dedicated specialists, unborn babies with complex problems will have better outcomes. The FCI’s goal is to provide families with the most accurate diagnosis, while helping them understand their situation and prepare for the birth and needs of their baby.

In 2016, the Foundation supported the expense of lodging for families who travel to St. Louis from outside the area for appointments and surgeries.
THE COSTAS CENTER
Thanks to donations to the Foundation, SSM Health Cardinal Glennon is currently renovating the inpatient cancer unit in The Costas Center. The beach-themed oasis will provide a patient-centered healing environment and include 18 state-of-the-art patient rooms with private bathroom and shower facilities, comfortable sleeper sofas for parents staying overnight, an updated and enlarged playroom for pediatric cancer patients, along with new nursing stations that allow for closer proximity to patients. The renovations will increase patient comfort, safety and satisfaction.
