CHIEFS WIN CLASS 5A STATE FOOTBALL TITLE The Cardinal Gibbons football earned the school's firstever state title with a 48-10 rout of North Marion High School in the Class 5A state finals on Friday, Dec. 7, at the Camping World Stadium in Orlando.

A LETTER FROM OUR PRINCIPAL Dear Parents, The birth of Christ and the manger scene remind us of the importance of family and religion in our lives. As parents of high school age students, many of us recall with special fondness the magic of our first Christmas as a young family. Our firstborn child was, no doubt, the focus of that early Christmas. May our focus this year be on the Christ child, and the peace and love that come to those who embrace Him. During this very special time of year we continue to focus on our students’ potential to be of service to others. Our Thanksgiving drive, spearheaded by Mr. Cubas and Ms. Bianchi has resulted in significant assistance to several food ministries; for Christmas we have sent home “brown bags” with a list of requested food items which we hope will brighten the lives of families and children who, without our help, would not experience the “magic” of Christmas.

Congratulations to Mr. Herrmann and our Science Olympiad students on their first place finish in Orlando this month, to Mr. Crow and our String Ensemble on their Superior rating at the District 15 Florida Orchestra Association competition and to Coach Dubuc and our football team on their first ever State Championship! We are fortunate to have so many highly talented and dedicated students. Special thanks to Mr. Crow, Mrs. Fraley and Mr. Navarro and our entire music program for sharing their time and talents with so many in our community during this Christmas Season.

PARENT SAFETY PRESENTATION To better educate and inform parents about active shooter situations, Cardinal Gibbons will host a Parent Safety Presentation, in conjunction with JetBlue and Fort Lauderdale Police Department, on Wednesday, Jan. 23, at 7:00 p.m. in the Cardinal Gibbons gymnasium.

The presentation is intended to educate Cardinal Gibbons parents about the reality of active shooter situations and inform them of how to begin a conversation regrading these situations with their children. Open conversations with your children are crucial to ensuring their awareness and safety, as this is not just a school issue, but a church issue, movie theatre issue, concert issue and simply an anytime, anyplace issue.

We ask that all parents who wish to attend RSVP. An email with a link to RSVP will be emailed out to parents at the beginning of January.

SIX ATHLETES SIGN AT NCAA DIVISION I FOOTBALL EARLY SIGNING Six Cardinal Gibbons student-athletes signed their National Letters of Intent on Wednesday, Dec. 19, during a ceremony held in the gymnasium on the NCAA Division I Football Early Signing Day. Those who signed today included: Vincent Davis- University of Pittsburg Jamari Williams- University of Arizona Nik Scalzo- University of Kentucky Nik Ognenovic-University of Kentucky Sidney Porter – Marshall University Yahweh Jeudy- University of Iowa

SPANISH HONOR SOCIETY HOSTS FIRSTEVER BILINGUAL MASS The Cardinal Gibbons Spanish Honor Society hosted the firstever bilingual Mass in school history, which was performed in both English and Spanish, to celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Wednesday, Dec. 12.

At the beginning of Mass, students adorned the altar with symbols of Our Lady of Guadalupe, including a replica of the tilma that bears her image, presented by Mateo Pérez, a hand-stitched altar cover from Mexico and numerous roses, symbolizing the Miracle of the Roses, presented by Nicole Borowski, Arthur de Souza, Nicolas Delgado, Ramón Delgado, Lisandro Estopinan, Daniel González, Bella Kubach, Diego Maldonado, Richard William Marques and Valentino Pardo. Mass and Devotional candles were carried by Nolan Cambridge, Jayson Fry, Jessica Gómez, María Álvarez, Karen McGee and Ally Bascombe, while Angelina Del Toro presented the crucifix.

Salomé Bálsamo then shared the story of Our Lady of Guadalupe, which commemorates the appearance of the Virgin Mary to Juan Diego, a Mexican man who had recently converted to the Catholic faith, in 1531 on the Hill of Tepeyac in present-day Mexico City.

Cheyenne Medkiff, Jesús Blanco Rodríguez, Melanie Corrales and Jacob Swad also gave readings regarding Our Lady of Guadalupe in Spanish.

Senior Kelly performed “Ave Maria” in Spanish, as well as other Spanish songs, including the communion hymn “Pan de Vida.”

While Harris sang, the gifts were presented by Hayley Swain and Micaela Restrepo. Theresa Staab served as a Eucharistic Minister during communion.

The Mass concluded with a blessing by Rev. Cruz and a reminder to students to follow the example set by Blessed Mary and become willing instruments of the Lord.

THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE

GIBBONS GIVES BACK TO THE COMMUNITY WITH HOLIDAY DRIVES CHRISTMAS FOOD & TOY DRIVE

This holiday season, students and faculty at Cardinal Gibbons supplied numerous families in the local community with meals and holiday cheer through the Thanksgiving Drive and the Christmas Food and Toy Drives.

Students, led by Mrs. Bianchi and Mr. Perez-Cubas, spent approximately two weeks in November and two weeks in December collecting donated goods for each drive. The food and toys were then dropped off by students and distributed to families at Sheridan House, Jubliee Center, San Isidro Food Ministry, Children Home Society and All Saints Soup Kitchen.

In addition to donating food items and toys, there were several other ways students could support needy members of the community. Charity Dress-Up Days were held during the food drives, allowing students to dress out of uniform for $5. All proceeds from the Dress-Up Days were used to purchase Publix gift cards for each food bank, allowing each food bank to supplement the items they received as donations. Mr. Cedeno, dean of students, also hosted a photo opportunity, where he dressed as Santa and allowed students to take Polaroid photos with him if they made a $5 donation toward the Christmas Drive.

In total, students were able to deliver dozens of boxes of food and toys, and supplied each of the five local food banks with $500 in gift cards for each holiday drive.

SCIENCE OLYMPIAD TAKES FIRST IN ORLANDO COMPETITION In their second competition of the season, the Cardinal Gibbons Science Olympiad team took first overall at the Orlando Science School Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 1, in Orlando.

At the tournament, the Chiefs Science Olympiad team battled against 20 of the top teams in the state and earned 47 individual medals.

The team is currently preparing for their next competition at the Kenston Science Olympiad Invitational Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 19 in Kenston, Ohio.

CHORUS TO PREFORM AT DISNEY'S CANDLELIGHT PROCESSIONAL The Cardinal Gibbons Chorus will preform at the Walt Disney Candlelight Processional at Epcot on Sunday, Dec. 23.

The Candlelight Processional, an annual holiday event at Epcot, features a celebrity narrator recounting the biblical tale of Jesus' birth to the Virgin Mary in Bethlehem. The Cardinal Gibbons Chorus will make up the event's massed choir, and, with the help of a 50-piece orchestra, will provide musical entertainment to supplement the story of the birth of our savior.

STUDENTS DELIVER TOYS TO JOE DIMAGGIO CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL Five Cardinal Gibbons students spent their afternoon delivering toys to sick children and teenagers at Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital in Hollywood on Wednesday, Dec. 5.

The Conservation, Interact and Excel clubs, moderated

by Mr. Davis, spent three days collecting toys to donate.

Once all of the toys were collected, the three clubs came together for holiday party, where all club members gathered to wrap presents, listen to Christmas music and share holiday treats such as eggnog.

After the gifts were wrapped, five students, the presidents and vice presidents of each club, set out to spread Christmas cheer and visit with patients at Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital. Davis and the students spent time with numerous patients, brightening their day and building friendships. In total, the students delivered 28 gifts.

Davis believes that giving back to the community is of the utmost importance for his students and teaches them that there is always a way to make a difference.

Davis said, "The doctors and nurses at Joe DiMaggio do a great job of making the hospital feel like home, but our students helped them make everything feel a little more like Christmas."

ST. JOAN OF ARC TAKES FIRST IN CARDINAL GIBBONS ANNUAL BRAIN BRAWL On Saturday, Dec. 8, St. Joan of Arc took first place in the annual Cardinal Gibbons Brain Brawl, hosted by the National Honor Society. Teams from St. Coleman and St. Andrew finished second and third, respectively, out of six local middle school teams. Each of the six teams were pitted against each other in an academic trivia competition, answering questions regarding literature, mathematics, science, social studies and current events.

Students from St. Joan of Arc earned $300 scholarships to Cardinal Gibbons, while the students from St. Coleman and St. Andrew earned $200 and $100 scholarships, respectively.

AP SPANISH LANGUAGE STUDENTS COLLABORATE ACROSS THE COUNTRY -By Dr. Carmen Chavez

Cardinal Gibbons and Bishop Moore Catholic Schools' AP Spanish Language and Culture classes have #FlipgridFever!

Students in Dr. Chavez's AP Spanish Language course have been busy collaborating with other classes around the country through an app called Flipgrid, which is an asynchronous video application that engages students and teaches visual communication.

The collaboration began after Chavez attended a Flipgrid informational session at the 2018 Florida Foreign Language Association (FFLA) conference. Shortly after integrating FlipGrid into her classroom, Mr. Tony Vincent, a fifth-grade teacher in Iowa, reached out to Chavez via Twitter to have her students share their studies on immigration with his class via Flipgrid.

This experience was so enriching for Chavez's students that she decided to set up another collaborative exercise for her students, that covered more advanced topics and allowed them to engage with other high school students. Dr. Chavez reached out to an old friend and colleague, Mrs. Luisa Buck, a fellow AP Spanish Language teacher at Bishop Moore High School in Orlando.

Chavez originally met Buck at the AP Spanish Language & Culture reading in Ohio when they were both College Board readers for the AP Spanish Language & Culture exam.

Chavez's students and the students at Bishop Moore have been hosting video chat sessions where they communicate in Spanish and host lessons related to AP Spanish Language and Culture themes, as well as sharing general information about themselves with one another.

CONGRATULATIONS TO 2018-2019 ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME NOMINEES Congratulations to the former athletes, administrators, coaches and supporters who have been selected as the Class of 2018-2019 nominees for the Cardinal Gibbons High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

The induction ceremony will be held on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. in the Cardinal Gibbons gymnasium.

Since its establishment in 2003, the Cardinal Gibbons Athletic Hall of Fame has recognized and celebrated the outstanding athletic achievements and contributions of numerous alumni, coaches and supporters. Â Each year, members of the Cardinal Gibbons community who have made an outstanding contribution to the Athletic Department are honored and inducted into the Hall of Fame.

STUDENTS SHARE BREAKFAST WITH THEIR GRANDPARENTS AT GRANDPARENTS DAY On Friday, Dec. 14, over 500 Cardinal Gibbons students and their grandparents filled the gymnasium for one of our favorite events of the year, Grandparents Day! The morning began with a few remarks from principal Paul Ott, where he spoke of his role as a grandfather, as well as the importance of the love and guidance that students receive from their grandparents. Rev. Luis Cruz gave a blessing before students began serving their grandparents breakfast.

While the students and their grandparents talked, laughed and reminisced together, they were entertained with performances by the Cardinal Gibbons cheerleading and dance teams, as well as chorus, wind and percussion ensembles.

Students even led their grandparents to the dance floor to a share a dance, while the jazz ensemble played holiday tunes.

To close out the day, the grandparents were shown a video produced by all of the senior students in attendance, where each student was featured sharing messages of thanks to their grandparents for their eternal love and support.

FABER '19 AND VAZQUEZ '19 SIGN NATIONAL LETTERS OF INTENT Seniors Caitlyn Faber and Alysa Vazquez signed their respective National Letters of Intent on Wednesday, Nov. 14. Faber, who was named Sun Sentinel "Player of the Year," signed to play volleyball at Belmont Abbey, while Vazquez signed to play soccer at American University.

MANNING '20 WINS GOLD WITH TEAM USA IN PANAMA Timmy Manning '20, and the USA Baseball U18 National Team for earning gold at the COPABE U18 Pan-American Championships on Sunday, Dec. 2, at Rico Cedeno Stadium in Chitre, Panama.

During the tournament, Manning pitched a scoreless inning against Peru, helping Team USA to a 26-0 victory. The University of Florida commit also pitched relief during Team USA's 13-6 victory over the Dominican Republic.

The team closed out the tournament with a 17-2 win over Panama in the gold medal game, finishing with a perfect 9-0 record.

FOUR-STAR DEFENSIVE END BOGLE RECEIVES ALL-AMERICAN BOWL JERSEY Surrounded by family, friends and classmates, Cardinal Gibbons defensive end Khris Bogle received his All-American Bowl jersey during a ceremony, held in the Cardinal Gibbons gymnasium, on Tuesday, Nov. 13.

The U.S. Army All-American Bowl brings together 100 of the nation’s top senior high school football players for an East vs. West matchup, celebrating the talent of young players and their dedication to the sport. Andrew Luck, Tim Tebow and Odell Beckham Jr. are just a few outstanding players who, like Bogle, were also given the honor of being named an All-American Bowl athlete.

During the ceremony, which was part of the All-American Bowl Selection Tour presented by American Family Insurance, Chiefs head football coach, Matt DuBuc, who has worked with Bogle throughout his athletic career at Cardinal Gibbons, praised the young player for his hard work on and off of the playing field.

DuBuc said, “Throughout the past few years, Khris has really developed as a great student-athlete and football player.” But DuBuc also noted that Bogle could not have undergone this journey alone.

He said, “Without Khris’ teammates and coaches, none of this could exist…all of you have played a major role in Khris’ development.”

Bogle mirrored this sentiment in a speech of his own, thanking numerous members of the Cardinal Gibbons community for helping him become the well-rounded young man he is today.

Bogle thanked his coaches and teammates for their continuous hard work and dedication that has helped him reach this elite level. He then continued to thank his former teachers, Kristine Chikerotis and Susan Hanks, who believed in Bogle and aided him through his freshman and sophomore years of high school and have continued to support him, though they are no longer his teachers. Lastly, Bogle showed a great appreciation for his family and friends, who served as the backbone of his support system and challenged him to reach his full potential throughout his academic and athletic journeys.

Bogle, who recently returned to Fort Lauderdale after spending time at the University of Alabama on an official recruiting visit, is expected to announce his college commitment during the AllAmerican Bowl on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019. The game, which will be held in the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, will be televised live on NBC beginning at 1:00 p.m. and is expected to attract over 4 million viewers.
