Meet Our Representatives Tara Challenor Representative in Kent My name is Tara Challenor and I came into contact with CRY when my sister Therese died in 1997 at the age of 16.

Therese, my brother Tom and myself had been on holiday at Butlins in Minehead with our Church. On the fourth day I had seen Therese and had been chatting to her. We went our separate ways and two minutes later she collapsed and never regained consciousness. She was airlifted to hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

We have never had a specific cause of death, which has been so hard to deal with. Until that day she had been a healthy fit girl who enjoyed dancing and sport.

We could not understand how someone could just die and the doctors couldn’t tell us why. We thought that what happened to Therese was very rare until my Mum saw CRY Founder, Alison Cox on ‘This Morning’ talking about CRY. Therese’s death affected my family greatly and we were never the same again. It was wonderful to find CRY because it showed us we are not alone and it has given us

CRY’s Representatives help to raise awareness in communities around the UK by attending events in an official capacity on behalf of CRY. We receive many different requests for a CRY Representative, but this could include attending another supporter’s fundraising event for a cheque presentation or speaking about CRY’s work at a rotary club.

Whether it is giving talks, answering questions or being a face of the charity, representatives support families and

something positive in our lives. I find a lot of comfort in raising money and awareness for CRY because it helps me feel that I am helping other families in the same situation as mine that I am trying to stop this happening to other people like Therese, and keeping her memory alive.

I have put on charity events for the last twenty seven years including shows, Tara Challenor quizzes, concerts and themed evenings. Our local area has managed to raise over £50,000 and we have managed to put on two CRY heart screening events and another one is due this year. Doing all of this helps me to feel like I am doing something for Therese.

I miss Therese each day. She was beautiful, so full of life, loving, kind and funny – and should not have died.

I am very proud to be CRY’s Representative for Kent.

September Great North Run 2024 September 8

European Association of Preventative Cardiology (EAPC) Conference September 3 Almost 300 delegates attended the EAPC Sports Cardiology Course event, hosted by CRY and Cleveland Clinic London, sharing the latest developments in sports cardiology. This was the 10th anniversary of the EAPC course, first held in London back in 2005.

It was excellent to have such a broad global cardiology community making up our audience both in person and online, with people joining from different countries across Europe and the rest of the world, plus a large

The Great North Run was back to kick off our fundraising in this quarter of the year, and a huge congratulations to our 67 runners who took part, representing CRY in one of the biggest running events of the year. We had double the amount runners this year, and it was fantastic to see so many supporters running for CRY. Thank you to each one of our runners for their amazing efforts in completing this event, raising awareness and fundraising so generously for CRY. Read the full write up on page 24.

News from the Chief Executive Foundation after the sudden death of her son, Tom, in 2022. The foundation has been able to fund two CRY screening days for nearly 200 young people at Harwich and Parkeston Football Club. Due to Helen’s incredible fundraising efforts in memory of Tom, she was nominated for, and won, the Pride of Britain Regional Fundraiser of the Year award for East Anglia.

News. The report was broadcast across 7 regional nightly news bulletins and was featured prominently on the ITN National News website. The feature focused on the need for greater training in ECG interpretation, and how developments in AI might help to improve the speed and accuracy of screening.

Whilst the majority of young sudden cardiac deaths occur with no symptoms, sometimes symptoms are present. It is vitally important that changes are made so that young people’s ECGs are read by specialists.

CRY Cardiologist Professor Michael Papadakis was interviewed as part of the report, focusing on AI and its potential implications for diagnosis, explaining:

When a family like Tom’s come forward and they want to raise funds to give something back and prevent another tragedy in their community - it’s quite incredible; to have so many families doing this - raising funds, awareness and offering these services in their communities - it is something we’re very proud of as a charity.

“With reliable AI algorithms, it may well be that we are able to take a picture of that particular ECG on our phone and, through an application, make an instantaneous interpretation which can give us what we call differential diagnoses – a list of diagnoses of what may be wrong with our patient that the doctor can act on. Obviously, that will save time, it could potentially save money and very, very importantly… it can save from potential mistakes in diagnosis.”

BBC Radio Hereford and Worcester & BBC Online September 27 CRY supporter Andrea Joyce was interviewed on BBC Radio Hereford and Worcester about the importance of screening and her fundraising efforts in memory of her son Kieran.

Andrea set up the Kieran Joyce Memorial Fund after the death of her son in 2019. With help from friends and family she has so far raised over £100,000 and funded

News from the Chief Executive the screening of more than 700 young people, with 15 of those identified as having heart anomalies which need further tests and potentially treatment.

Among them was Ella Bowen, younger sister of West Ham footballer Jarrod Bowen. Ella underwent surgery as a result of a problem that was uncovered during a screening funded in Kieran’s memory.

The Bowen family kindly donated one of Jarrod’s match tops, which was auctioned for £5,500 to fund a further day of screening in Herefordshire.

fundraising efforts of CRY Campaigner, Debbie Dixon October 6 Another powerful milestone in the prevention of young sudden cardiac death was reached by CRY supporter Debbie Dixon and the fund she set up in memory of her son Aaron, who died 10 years ago in September 2014, aged just 23.

Debbie held her 100th day of cardiac screening with CRY – bringing the total number of young people screened through the Aaron Dixon Memorial Fund to 8,728. To date, funds raised by Debbie have led to 346 young people being identified with heart anomalies which have required referrals for further investigations and potentially lifesaving treatments.

CRY Heart of Durham Walk October 6 It was another powerful day in Durham this year for the Heart of Durham Walk. 225 walkers took part walking in memory of a young person who has died, or in support of young people who have been diagnosed with a lifethreatening heart condition.

Thank you to all our supporters who joined us in Durham, or as part of My Walk for CRY. This event is a vital part of the CRY calendar each year and we are so grateful to all who join us raising awareness of CRY’s vital work.

BBC Radio Cambridge interview for cardiac screening weekend October 17 I joined Amir Suleman on BBC Radio Cambridge, alongside CRY Supporter Hilary Nicholls, to speak about the importance of heart screening. These interviews were part of a two-day cardiac screening event at the University of Cambridge funded in memory of Hilary’s daughter, Clarissa Nicholls, who tragically died from Arrhythmogenic Cardiomyopathy in 2023.

Also interviewed was Jess Reeve, who created “Clarissa’s Campaign for Cambridge Hearts” along with her friend Izzy Winter. With help from Hilary, the campaign aims to raise money to establish a university heart screening service, in the hope of preventing another tragedy like Clarissa’s.

Surrey chartered surveyors Adair help to build up local support for CRY October 23 Adair announced the company’s new collaboration with CRY, which will see staff and colleagues being encouraged to get involved with local fundraising and raising awareness for CRY. The Adair team visited

Fundraising and corporate donations also mean we can maintain our internationally acclaimed research programme and continue training a new generation of cardiologists, specialising in the detection and treatment of the conditions that can cause a young sudden cardiac arrest; as well as continuing our support of families through our specialist bereavement support network.

Victor announces charity partnership with CRY in memory of Dan Cook October 28 Victor, the private air charter company, announced a new collaboration with CRY in October, which will see Victor’s staff strive to raise awareness and funds to help CRY. Victor reached out to CRY following the sudden death of the company’s Director of Sales, Dan Cook, earlier this year. Tragically, Dan collapsed and died whilst at the gym. He was aged just 33 and his death sent shockwaves across the company and wider Victor community. Friends and many who knew him have since vowed to raise awareness and funds as part of a legacy to their much-missed colleague.

CRY’s myheart network and Research Fellows attend the AICC conference November 12 Raising Awareness Week 2024 November It was inspiring to again see so many people involved with CRY’s Raising Awareness Week in November 2024.

The 12 A Week Challenge, now into its fifth year as part of Raising Awareness Week, had 111 supporters taking part from all over the UK, completing their 12 miles by walking, cycling, running or swimming. Each of the 12 miles completed represented the 12 young people who die each week from undiagnosed heart conditions.

CRY attended the Association for Inherited Cardiac Conditions (AICC) Conference to promote our myheart network for those living with a cardiac condition. CRY’s myheart coordinator, Kanika Bhateja, attended the event alongside former CRY Research Fellows Dr Abbas Zaidi and Dr Raghav Bhatia.

CRY’s myheart network provides personalised help, support, and information to individuals who have been diagnosed with a potentially life-threatening inherited or congenital cardiac condition.

ISS2024 Congress on sudden cardiac death in sports and recreation December 14 Professors Sanjay Sharma and Marco Guazzi (Milan, Italy) and myself were the three international speakers invited to talk at the “Meet the Experts” session at the congress of the Serbian Association of Sports Cardiology in Belgrade.

I gave the talk “Prevention of Young Sudden Cardiac Death and supporting those affected. Cardiac Risk in the Young in the UK, screening and support since 1995”.

In this Update we’re delighted to introduce Dr Mihnea Casian and to officially welcome him to the CRY family. Dr Casian is nine months into his CRY-funded Research Fellowship, under the tutelage of Professor Sanjay Sharma and Professor Michael Papadakis.

In this interview Dr Casian shares his views on issues surrounding the difficult decisions that cardiologists have to routinely make when screening elite and grassroots athletes – and how important it is for a highly trained, expert eye to be reviewing these tests to ensure that no sportsman or woman is ever unnecessarily disqualified from the game they love and have trained all their lives for.

CRY Online Social media

Social media is a vital part of how CRY interacts with supporters and, first and foremost, raises awareness of young sudden cardiac death and what can be done to tackle it – from preventative measures (screening) to bereavement support for those affected by a tragedy.

In the CRY Online segment, we look back at the fourmonth period the Update covers and include a small selection of social media highlights, such as Facebook posts that reached an amazing amount of people, or supporters who tweeted memorable photos at us.

During this four-month period CRY’s Facebook page had a 26% rise in engagements, with a 13.4% rise on Instagram and a huge 60% on TikTok. This is a fantastic indication of the impact CRY social media has in raising awareness of YSCD and CRY’s vital work.

CRY’s Raising Awareness Week took place in November, with a focus on screening and CRY’s belief that all young people should have the opportunity to have their hearts screened. Across social media in November, we saw an increase in engagements and impressions across many screening posts, with supporters keen to share their stories and re-post on their own social media pages, providing incredible awareness raised about CRY’s mission.

Seeing people supporting each other and sharing these powerful stories is an impactful way to raise awareness and we appreciate everyone who has taken the time to interact with CRY’s social media.

CRY’s research made an impact on X through September, November and December, with three prestigious journal articles posted being the most widely shared and interacted with on the platform.

Screening posts on Facebook included key messages and “What happens at a CRY screening?” which received hundreds of comments from people telling their own stories in memory of a young person, or in support of

Community and fundraiser support was abundant over on Instagram during this period, with posts for both the CRY Heart of Durham Walk and the Great North Run being among the most popular posts in September and October.

Taking part in a fundraising or support event for CRY is a great way to raise awareness and donations, and we are so thankful to every individual who takes on an event in memory of a young person or in support of CRY. Also on Instagram we have been sharing stories of those who have had their heart screened by CRY. Throughout Raising Awareness Week we were sharing those stories, including Jess’s, showing the importance of heart screenings, and the impact of CRY’s work.

“I got screened in 2018 at the age of 23 […] my ECG came back abnormal and CRY referred me for further testing.

Within a year I’d had multiple tests and I was diagnosed with a heart condition I’d had since birth. I got sent for life saving open heart surgery. CRY do a great job and I wouldn’t be here without them.”

Over on TikTok impressions were up 57%, engagements up 60% and we had over 10,000 video views in this period. As one of the newer social media platforms that

CRY is using, its been encouraging to see such great support over there, with lots of awareness raised in a really important demographic.

Interacting with us on social media is an easy way to keep up to date with any CRY information you might need. You will receive updates on upcoming events and screenings, and photos from fellow supporters.

What happens at a screening?

The basic test is an electrocardiogram (ECG) which is a simple non-invasive and painless test that examines the electrical activity within the heart.

Small stickers are placed at strategic points on the chest, arms and legs. Flexible leads (called electrodes) that extend from the ECG machine are then attached to these stickers. The electrical rhythm of the heart is recorded and printed out.

This part of the process only takes two to three minutes to perform. The ECG printout is then reviewed by a doctor in conjunction with a personal and family history questionnaire.

If a more detailed image is needed (about 5–10% of individuals), an echocardiogram will often be taken on the same day. Soundwaves echo against various parts of the heart and they are recorded on a screen.

This provides a detailed picture of the heart’s structure and how well it is functioning. This takes about 30 minutes to perform.

The screening programme is under the aegis of Professor Sanjay Sharma and Professor Michael Papadakis.

2024 has been our busiest year yet at the CRY Cardiovascular Pathology Laboratory. We have had a high number of heart referrals so far this year, totalling 718 cases, with cases including splenic samples for genetic testing increasing up to 464.

Support after a young sudden cardiac death: Medical Support In 2008 CRY’s fundraisers facilitated the establishment of the CRY Centre for Cardiac Pathology (CRY CCP) – a centre of excellence for a fasttrack expert cardiac pathology service for bereaved families, led by Professor Mary Sheppard with a team of staff funded by CRY. The centre was able to launch with the help of £175,000 that had been donated in memory of Sebastian and Howard English. This donation provided a three-year grant for Professor Sheppard to carry out research at the Royal Brompton Hospital and funded a research scientist, a PhD student, a medical secretary, and specialist microscope and laboratory facilities.

Over the past 17 years, we have continued to receive significant donations for the centre in memory of many young people, and over £700,000 in memory of Sebastian and Howard.

The CRY CCP was originally based at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London and is currently based at St George’s Hospital, Tooting.

The CRY CCP examines hundreds of hearts every year to determine the causes of death when a young person dies suddenly, and endeavours to return their report to the coroner within approximately two weeks of the referral. This provides affected families with much-needed clarity over what has happened, and exactly what kind of specialist testing they may need to undergo. Previously

some families would endure a wait of up to 2 years for answers following their tragedy.

Speaking in her Update 76 Magazine Column, CRY Founder Alison Cox said: “The impact of having a dedicated centre for the pathology of victims of young sudden cardiac death cannot be overestimated.

“CRY’s service endeavoured to return the heart to the family in time the funeral and because of this families were no longer reluctant to have their child, sibling or partner’s heart sent away for examination which was so critical to understanding

How can the CCP provide support after a young sudden cardiac death?

The centre is now the largest pathology unit in the world dealing with sudden cardiac death, with more than 80% of UK coroners now routinely referring to the centre.

Professor Sheppard and her team have conducted more than 8,000 expert cardiac post-mortems on young people, making the CRY CCP the world’s largest database of expert cardiac investigations.

CRY provides this service, funding the cost of coroners’ referrals, so that families no longer have the ordeal of a protracted wait for the cause of death of their child or partner.

Meanwhile, Professor Sheppard has contributed to hundreds of journal articles on cardiac pathology, as well as contributing to research projects both in the UK and around the world, and discusses difficult cases with other pathologists around the country on a regular basis.

We would not have been able to continue developing Professor Mary Sheppard the CRY CCP without Professor Sheppard’s expertise and the tireless work of her and her team, and the phenomenal support we’ve received from CRY families.

The centre has completely changed our understanding of YSCD and how to carry out specialist testing for relatives after a tragedy, all while supporting families with the information they need.

The CCP Team Professor Mary Sheppard Professor Sheppard’s main focus is on the pathological diagnosis of sudden cardiac death. She collaborates with cardiologists who screen families for cardiac conditions throughout the UK. She works with scientists, as well as clinicians in understanding the pathophysiology underlying these conditions.

Specialist cardiac pathology at the CRY Centre for Cardiac Pathology is provided as a free service to coroners when the cause of death is unascertained, and the person is aged 35 years or under.

He is working closely with Professor Sheppard and developing expertise in all aspects of cardiovascular pathology. On September 3 2024 almost 300 delegates attended an intense, informative and interactive event held in Central London, sharing the very latest developments in sports cardiology as part of the European Association of Preventative Cardiology (EAPC) Sports Cardiology Course.

This was the 10th iteration of the course which was first held in London back in 2005. For the first time the EAPC, an association of the

ESC, joined forces with the American College of Cardiology (ACC) Foundation to bring a truly international flavour to the course.

In a change to the annual research calendar, CRY took the decision to partner with the EAPC and Cleveland Clinic London and co-host our International Conference immediately following on from the 2024 European Society of Cardiology (ESC) congress in London.

The format delivered a packed programme of presentations on key aspects of sports cardiology practice, as well as discussion and interactive sessions.

was in town across the weekend of 30 August to 2 September, led us to rearrange and restructure our annual research conference – it just made perfect sense to reduce travel times and costs and keep the conversation going after an amazing ESC meeting in London.

“As such, we welcomed one of our biggest in-person events ever (with many other delegates joining us online) and it was just incredible to have a global cardiology community making up our audience, from so many different countries across Europe and the rest of the world, including a large contingent from the US, thanks to our new collaboration with the American College of Cardiology Foundation.

“The feedback from delegates and speakers alike has been unanimously positive and has reassured all of us involved in the organisation of this event that we “got it right” in terms of the timings, themes and overall tone.

“Sports cardiology – alongside our mission of achieving a greater understanding of the causes and risk factors of young sudden cardiac death in the general population – is at the core of CRY’s research portfolio. It’s vital that those involved in furthering developments in the ways athletes are screened, monitored and (when necessary) treated can come together to share knowledge and international guidelines. As a UK-based research organisation, CRY was delighted to organise and host this pioneering event and

In the second of our series of ‘research updates’ which focus on the achievements – and vision – of CRYs current Research Fellows, we’re delighted to introduce Dr Mihnea Casian and to officially welcome him to the CRY family!

Originally hailing from Romania (although fluent in 5 languages and with an exceptional interest and insight into European screening protocol and practice) Dr Casian is already starting to make waves with his presentations and early research abstracts.

Just 9 months into his CRY-funded Research Fellowship, under the tutelage of Professors Sanjay Sharma and Michael Papadakis, in this interview Dr Casian shares his views on issues surrounding the difficult decisions that cardiologists have to routinely make when screening elite and grassroots athletes – and how important it is for a highly trained, expert eye to be reviewing these tests to ensure that, as Dr Casian says, “no sportsman or woman is ever unnecessarily disqualified from the game they love and have trained all their lives for.”

Dr Casian had already been working at St George’s on a grant from the Romanian Cardiac Society when he was spotted and invited to apply for a CRY-funded Research Fellowship, allowing him to continue working with the internationally acclaimed research team and to extend his time in the UK. He says: “It’s been a dream come true to work with Prof.

Papadakis and Prof. Sharma and from the very start, I was just so excited at the prospect of being able to travel across the UK, screening 100 young people in a day.”

Firstly Dr Casian, congratulations on the recognition, interest and momentum that’s growing around your portfolio of research abstracts and presentations at conferences. Can you talk us through the topline focus of your research, being carried out as part of your CRYfunded Research Fellowship?

“So, in sports cardiology, we are always faced with the conundrum of distinguishing what’s actually related to sports; what’s normal for an elite athlete…and what’s a potential problem that we should be concerned about and need to investigate further.

“In an ICC [Inherited Cardiac Conditions] clinical setting, we are always faced with the paradox of wanting to diagnose an individual… but at the same time, wanting to avoid over diagnosis – and this can sometimes occur with a screening [when not supervised by a specially trained cardiologist]. As a doctor, it would be very painful for me to know that I’d unfairly labelled someone with a potentially career-ending diagnosis.

“In terms of my own research, we’ve been looking at the ECGs of a very large cohort of individuals from both the general population and professional athletes, exploring the significance of identification of an abnormal feature known as Inferior T-wave inversion, which may be a redflag for a cardiomyopathy. But because we’re working with such a huge volume of data (around 100,000 individuals – which is all thanks to CRY!) I am really confident that we will uncover new findings about certain sub-sets of T-wave inversion and a better understanding of which are the most concerning and likely to be related to a cardiomyopathy. In the longer term, this research could be fed into the development of new ECG interpretation consensus, helping to ensure that we don’t “over-call” a diagnosis and can reduce the so-called grey area.

“In fact, we are all looking forward to the amended criteria for ECG interpretation in athletes (due as an update to the last guidelines in 2017), which will be developed by the who’s who in sports cardiology, including Professors Michael Papadakis and Sanjay Sharma and international experts such as the US’s Prof Jonathan Drezner and Prof Jonathan Kim– basically experts who brought to the table the most significant and valuable information about ECG findings in athletes. Exciting times for all of us involved in

A specific published abstract has been flagged up by CRY as being of real interest: Arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathies (ARVC): Diagnostic challenges from imaging to genetics https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39240923 Can you tell us a bit about this specific piece of research – and its potential implications for families and individuals affected by ARVC? “This paper was written by me, under the guidance of my mentor from Bucharest, Prof. Ruxandra Jurcut (who co-authored the first European guidelines on cardiomyopathy) and Prof. Michael Papadakis who of course has expertise in sports cardiology, as well as inherited cardiac conditions. I feel as though I am the product of them both and of their specialist training.

“Which is not by accident, as I strongly believe that in order to be the best in sports cardiology (which is what I aspire to be one day) you need to have a very solid understanding of inherited heart conditions. Therefore, this paper is particularly symbolic for me. It was developed with the purpose of raising awareness amongst clinicians, warning them of the caveats in diagnosing (misdiagnosing, as well as over-diagnosing) Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathies (ARVC).

example, the deceased young person might be found to have had the most abnormal [the worst] phenotype – but we might only see very mild changes in other family members. This is where genetic testing comes in, although this again requires careful and sensitive explanation about the differences between ‘carrying’ and ‘displaying’ this genetic variant. We just have to be careful in this situation, as we obviously want to prevent a second fatal cardiac event in the same family. There is a difference between how we, as clinicians perceive risk, and how individuals perceive their risk, particularly in this situation.

The perception of risk – particularly when coming from the place of having experienced a tragic and devastating sudden death in someone close – is so individual and I believe it’s our job as expert clinicians to guide and empower them in their decision making and personal choice.

“We are very lucky at St George’s to have access to such skilled and dedicated specialists. The MDT (multidisciplinary team) is where we would discuss some of these cases, sharing our expertise to make the best decision possible for those in our care. Prevention is not a “one-size fits all”.

“With this in mind, something that I really like about working at St George’s is that we try to fight the stigma of a label – and refraining from labelling a young person with a diagnosis if it’s not going to add to their care.

“It takes a huge amount of knowledge to really understand how to put findings and current knowledge about a clinical scenario, into full context and to stratify risk accordingly. But this is of course hugely sensitive when we are looking after a family where there has been a sudden cardiac death, caused by a condition such as ARVC. For

answer. But we have to be so prudent that we don’t over diagnose surviving family members as it’s very hard to take a label back once you’ve called it.

“During a CRY screening, I have witnessed a case with two siblings (with a familial history of sudden death) where one had a reassuring ECG and the other had a clearly suspicious ECG for a cardiomyopathy, even though she was entirely asymptomatic. I felt it was my role to explain that further investigations now needed to be based on the suspicion of a cardiomyopathy and that it may be linked to the sudden cardiac death in their parent. You can only imagine the anxiety and emotions one can feel when confronted with this finding, knowing that they might be at risk to die suddenly. It is important to know how to convey the message in such cases and manage their expectations and concerns.

“As a CRY doctor we must always remember that we’re not in clinic – people walk through the doors presuming themselves to be healthy – so it’s tough (although necessary) to have to tell someone five minutes later that they’re at risk and their heart is not normal. We must always be aware of the psychological burden of the findings and convey their significance appropriately.”

How would you like to see the knowledge gained from your research rolled out in a practical and accessible way?

“In the long term, I really hope my research will feed into an even better understanding of the athlete’s heart, narrowing the so-called “grey area”, as well as how we

can guide and empower athletes diagnosed with a cardiac condition. I am always wondering what else is possible for athletes in terms of exercise, beyond a diagnosis or a label?

“It is always such a sensitive area – what is a normal athletes heart and who should we be keeping a close (expert!) eye on. There’s no doubt that there’s a difference between investigating an athlete’s heart to that of someone from the general population. So, I really hope my research will help to make the grey areas a little less grey.

“Things have already evolved immeasurably in the past twenty years of sports cardiology, and it is far better understood which athletes require further investigations or even treatment and an exercise prescription specific to their condition.

“But there is still much left to understand with regards to how sports shape your heart and why some athletes’ hearts are differently shaped compared to their peers” “And, especially when it comes to our grass roots athletes – they might not be professional, but they are still an athlete. Bear in mind that we still have trouble with defining athletes! The Belgians, in my opinion, have a very clear way of explaining the difference: they say an athlete is someone who does a significant amount of physical exercise, either with or without contact. With that in mind, it is also my belief that the most vulnerable group in sports cardiology are not always the elite professionals but those who play or train competitively at a grass roots level.

Research News And there’s no doubt that I’ve seen cases of this in my CRY screenings over the past six to nine months where very sporty, young people have presented with worrying ECGs. We really need to look out for this group.”

So, you’re currently midway (ish!) through your Research Fellowship with CRY. Can you round up what you’ve learnt so far in terms of research achievements and your experience of attending CRY screening events?

“This area of research [investigating YSCD] was important to me because I come from a country where we don’t have a framework in place for fully investigating young sudden cardiac death, so this was something that I was so keen to learn more about – specifically in the UK, which is a world-leader in the management of sudden cardiac death.

“In summary, I’m learning so much from both my patients at St George’s and from the people who come along to our screenings, as well as from the families who help setting up these events. You hear so many stories – stories from families where there has been a sudden cardiac death; families desperately seeking answers where they’ve been told it’s natural causes, which is incredibly difficult to comprehend. It’s our role to help them navigate this difficult journey. In clinic, I have time to talk with these families which is a real privilege and often very inspiring.

“I really do think I’m in the best place in the world to understand sudden cardiac death, constantly benefiting from the input of the incredible team at the CRY Pathology Centre, headed up by Professor Mary Sheppard and Dr Joe Westaby (who I am forever ‘harassing’ with questions, which they’re always willing to discuss with me!). It has been invaluable to be able to work closely with the expert cardiac pathology team. In Romania, we do have ICC expertise (Inherited Cardiac Conditions) but very little in the way of specialist cardiac histology, molecular

“Conversely, at a CRY screening, I have 5-10 minutes, so I’m really learning how to relate to people in different scenarios and how to convey important information, quickly and precisely. I also have to be very clear, concise and certain in my interpretation of the ECG – that is to say, in what I have seen and what I am saying to that person.

“On reflection, that’s definitely one of my greatest learnings from my time with CRY, so far!

“I’ve also learnt a lot about different sports… who knew that some elements of the game of golf (which I always considered to be a low intensity, slow sport) actually involve levels of endurance training? Or that frisbee is actually very demanding!”

What first inspired you to pursue a career in sports cardiology and the study of inherited heart conditions?

“When I first started out in my career and began training in sports cardiology (in 2020), I logged onto an online CRY webinar during lockdown – and then another one organised by the European Society of Cardiology – and the names Sanjay Sharma and Michael Papadakis kept coming up! I was mesmerised!

“So, I did some further investigations and found the CRY website, and started reading about the CRY Research Fellows, past and present, all with

Research News autopsy – and certainly no screening programme, outside of professional sport.

“The final inspiration for me to pursue my career in sports cardiology and training in the UK, came at a really pivotal moment while in Bucharest. A leading sportsman, playing for a national team, had symptoms and was seen by his club doctor. He was found to have an unusual ECG reading. He was told to stop immediately – and was left lingering, potentially facing an abrupt end to his professional career in his early-20s. A career he’d worked his whole life for and one which was also supporting his family. The implications were potentially devastating.

“Although very junior, my interest in the athlete’s heart was becoming known – but it was still to my surprise that I was asked by one of the consultants to reassess this athlete and to further investigate the ECG findings under their supervision. It was soon apparent to me that his heart was normal for such an accomplished and elite athlete and that the slightly unusual heart rhythm was of no concern (often seen in athletes).

“He was able to return to the game he loved (even though the situation had been quite traumatic for him). It further reinforced in my mind the importance of athletes requiring dedicated expertise and input. Furthermore, I wondered at that point if it’s fair or reasonable to stop an athlete only because you are uncertain of some findings. Then it occurred to me that, in order to empower an athlete in making their own decisions, you would need not only knowledge but also first-hand clinical experience. I knew then I needed to study and learn alongside some of the most revered leaders in the field – and I knew I’d find those in London.

“I was therefore incredibly fortunate to receive an initial 6-month grant from the Romanian Society of Cardiology to train at St George’s which, as I got to work with Profs Michael Papadakis and Sanjay Sharma, developed into me being awarded a prestigious Fellowship with CRY. “Now I already find myself in a position where friends and cardiology colleagues from back home are contacting me, asking my opinion about athletes who they feel should be stopped from playing sport. And that’s completely understandable if you haven’t seen hundreds of athletes!

asked to present a case study (at an international conference) of a clear diagnosis of cardiomyopathy which I had been looking into with Professor Michael Papadakis.

“There was much discussion and interestingly an Italian cardiologist said, “this person should not ever be allowed to compete” (referring to the law in his country). In my opinion, this decision is better discussed between the doctor and the patient – it should not be primarily a political or legal decision.

“However, it is of course good news that when it comes to professional, competitive sports, most sporting bodies will now insist that its athletes are routinely screened – but it’s still vital that these results are reviewed by experts!”

“In terms of general population screening, I think the way CRY is doing it is the best way and is actually leading the way internationally. I believe that every young person should have access to screening and should have the choice to be screened – I don’t think we have enough evidence to say it should be mandatory…but if it’s on offer, why would anyone refuse that opportunity? Unless, like some young athletes, they are scared about “what will happen to me if something is found to be wrong?”

“So, our responsibility as cardiologists, is to turn around the narrative and carefully explain that it’s always better to know and even if we find something wrong, there is so much that can be done to address and monitor problems – and it may be a long road ahead before we’re even talking about disqualification from sport and other physical activities, if at all.

“No screening programme is ever 100% accurate – in terms of false positives or false negatives. Essentially, this means that some individuals may be flagged as abnormal even if no diagnosis will be made after investigations and follow-up – while some may experience major cardiac events, including dying suddenly, despite being cleared.”

Can you summarise your first impressions of CRY – has the charity met your expectations?

“Through working with CRY, I get to see so many young athletes who have been made to feel concerned or even scared by other doctors because in reality they just are not aware of the “athlete’s heart”. But, when a specially trained sports cardiologist takes a look, we can often offer reassurance that they are safe to play and that any particular findings are actually normal for them.

“I have actually been really surprised by the size of CRY and its screening programme! I never would have imagined the sheer volume of screening taking place each year, which ultimately raises awareness regarding inherited cardiac conditions and young sudden cardiac death – otherwise considered rare. Education is power – and the team at CRY is amazing at sharing this knowledge, particularly amongst young people, in communities across the country – and on a wider level, with colleagues and cardiologists across the world, as we are turning our experience into expertise! I’m super impressed!”

“Firstly, the families are always so welcoming and you can feel their emotions when they join us for these events. It is so important for me to know as much as I can about their experience and to talk to them about the loved one they’ve lost.

What do CRY Research Fellows do?

“While in some parts of the UK there will be an automatic referral to CRY’s Pathology Centre at St. George’s, other families have struggled to find answers on their own or by contacting CRY after simply ‘googling’ sudden cardiac death in a young person. Disparities still exist.

“There is always a sense of dedication and commitment, to make sure that others would not have to go through a similar experience to theirs. This speaks about their kindness and generosity of spirit.

“I now really appreciate that becoming involved with an organisation such as CRY is part of the healing process, through channelling grief into something positive that brings great benefit to their community. Their power and strength is just amazing, whether they were bereaved 3 or 6 months ago or even many years ago. One mother told me that raising funds for CRY screenings in her local area was helping to change the ways she was coping with the sudden death of her son, which was very recent. I have to admit it was an inspirational and moving moment.

“Secondly, I’ve now seen with my own eyes that the awareness raised by CRY’s screening programme – and the amount of money raised by CRY supporters is incredible.

“My CRY Fellowship is not like anything I’ve ever done and not something I would have imagined doing when I started my training. Sure, it can be challenging at times and quite demanding given the steep learning-curve. Just imagine finding yourself in a foreign country, in a completely different health system, seeing 100 individuals in 8 hours!

But I love being a part of this pioneering screening programme and this wonderful team, travelling to all parts of the UK and then closing the loop by seeing some of the individuals I referred myself for further investigations in our dedicated clinic at St. George’s University Hospital of London.

“I really feel I’m thriving as a young cardiologist and part of something which is so important. Thank you for all your support and for making this opportunity possible.”

CRY funds medical research through research grants.

These grants cover a broad spectrum from fast track screening to pathology after a sudden death. The grants also help to provide specialist knowledge of sports cardiology. The field-gathered data in CRY’s screening programme is analysed and reported in peer-reviewed journals, providing essential information on the understanding of these conditions.

CRY’s Clinical Cardiology Research Programme CRY will continue to progress research in both elite athletes and the general population. Amongst CRY’s future aims is the identifying and determining the precise prevalence of cardiac disorders capable of causing sudden death in asymptomatic and apparently healthy individuals: as well as accurately assessing the cost implications of such a programme if it were implemented at national level.

Where do CRY Research Fellows go after working with CRY? One of CRY’s aims is to improve the quality of cardiology care for those affected by young sudden cardiac death and this will be acheived by increasing the number of specialists in the NHS with an understanding of how to best support families after the impact of these tragedies.

Great North Run

Congratulations and a massive thank you to the 67 runners who took part in the Great North Run for CRY It was a brilliant day, though the weather conditions were far from ideal, with the rain starting around the same time the race began. Despite this, the CRY team did amazingly well to make it round the course and get to the finish line.

It was lovely to meet and congratulate the CRY runners who came to visit us at the charity marquee, many of whom came back to see us along with their fantastic supporters. We were able to hand them a CRY medal along with some much-needed refreshments and the option of a massage.

We would like to thank all of the CRY runners’ friends and families for coming along and cheering on the CRY team, along with volunteers: David Jewell, Amy Gibson, Stuart Ramage and Jessica Townley for their kind help on the day. All the cheering and support from our volunteers helped the runners get across the line to complete the run; and massages kindly provided by volunteers helped them to recover from their outstanding efforts.

Once again, thank you to each and every one of our runners for their fantastic efforts in completing this event and fundraising so generously for CRY. They should all be extremely proud of their wonderful achievement.

CRY Heart of Durham Wallk

Thank you to our incredible supporters who joined us on Sunday the 6th October, for the 15th annual CRY Heart of Durham Walk We are deeply grateful to all 255 walkers and volunteers who joined us on the day, with many traveling far and wide to come together to remember those that have died of young sudden cardiac death. This important date in the CRY calendar is a meaningful occasion for everyone involved.

Despite the slight drizzle in morning, the weather held out, offering us a bright day, as we gathered at the Durham Amateur Rowing Club, who generously host the walk every year. Nestled by the riverside, surrounded by red and orange autumnal trees, our walkers began to gather from 9am onwards at the rowing club.

Once everyone had gathered, Cara MacMillan, a member of our CRY staff team, welcomed us to the Durham Walk and introduced two of the event organisers, Jeff Morland and Steve Percival. Jeff and Steve established the walk in 2009 in memory of Jeff’s son, Levon. They both gave speeches about the history and significance of the day

and the importance of raising awareness to prevent further tragedies, before reading aloud every young person our supporters were walking in memory of.

Following the speeches and minute of silence, participants set off at 11am aided by CRY volunteers Jeff and Steve, Joe Crow, Jim Henderson and David Jewell. It’s always so deeply moving to see our walkers set off through Durham in their CRY t-shirts, bringing vital awareness of CRY and the true incidence of young sudden cardiac death.

The 3.5 mile route took walkers past the cathedral and castle, with many walkers choosing to enter the cathedral and light a candle. After winding through the cobbled streets, navigating the bustling market place, and passing over historic bridges, our supporters headed back along the river to reunite at the rowing club.

everyone relaxed and reflected in the afternoon sun.

Supporters also had the opportunity to write heartfelt messages for their loved ones on the message wall.

We want to say a big thank you to Doug Moody, a local photographer who every single year captures beautiful pictures of our walkers throughout the day.

The experience of the Durham Walk is unique for everyone. Whilst some families have joined us for years, many others attended for the first time in 2024. We hope the walk provides everyone with a meaningful opportunity to remember and share memories of their loved ones.

We would like to thank the Durham Amateur Rowing Club for providing us the venue at a discount, your generosity is greatly appreciated.

We appreciate the effort every single person made to be there on the day, to come together to reflect and remember those who have died due to young sudden cardiac death, and to support those who have been diagnosed with an inherited cardiac condition.

Raising Awareness Week - 12 A Week Challenge

111 supporters took part in the 12 A Week Challenge, raising to date an incredible £19,776!

On Saturday 23rd November, 2024, 111 participants began clocking up miles through various activities, including walking, running, horse riding, swimming, hiking, cycling, and jogging.

The 12 A Week Challenge took place during Raising Awareness Week, running from the 23rd November to the 1st December 2024. Each of the 12 miles or activities completed symbolised the 12 young sudden cardiac deaths that occur each week in the UK. Throughout the week, participants shared their progress, photos, and updates on Facebook and Instagram. These posts fostered a sense of community as participants celebrated each other’s achievements and reflected on their personal reasons for joining. For many, the challenge was deeply emotional, with each mile or activity serving as a tribute to those lost to sudden cardiac death.

Participants went above and beyond, sharing inspiring stories of their unique approaches to the challenge. From walking 12 miles a day to completing 12-hour exercise sessions, 12-mile bike rides, and even 12-mile horse rides, the dedication, especially with the weather, was truly remarkable.

Collectively, participants achieved an incredible milestone, completing over 1,000 miles and activities!

Congratulations to everyone who took part in the 12 A Week Challenge. Your dedication has been extraordinary, and we’re thrilled to announce that, to date, the 111 participants have raised an impressive total of £19,776.

Raising Awareness Week - CRY Great Cake Bake

Thank you so much to the 36 bakers that took part in the CRY Great Cake Bake 2024, raising over £8,000!

The 13th annual CRY Great Cake Bake took place as part of Raising Awareness Week on Friday November 29.

Supporters far and wide dusted off their baking aprons on the day, and throughout November and into December, to bake some delicious treats and raise awareness of CRY. This year an incredible £8,938.36 was raised by thirty-six supporters who took part in the event. We are so grateful to you all. Whether you baked for your office, school, neighbours or friends and family – thank you.

“In June 2024 friends and family of Andrew Baker came together to celebrate his life on his 11th Anniversary.

Since Andrew’s death, annual celebrations have been held in his memory to bring everyone together, raise a toast and keep the memories alive. Over the recent years the events have gradually increased in size.

“Andrew was a fun-loving guy who adored his family and friends. He was extremely kind and caring and would light up any room with his smile and presence.

“Andrew was always the first person to volunteer and raise money for charitable causes and his life was tragically cut short whilst training for the Great North Run, in which he was planning to raise vital funds.

“Through two events BakerFest24 and BakerDay24 (golf event), family and friends have raised a total of £3,200.

A decision has been taken to split the funds raised between two charities Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) and Parents Association of Children with Tumours and Leukaemia (PACT). This will mean that both charities will receive £1,600 from these amazing events.

“Andrew’s kindness lives on! And in his memory family and friends will continue raising awareness of CRY and other charities, as well as raising funds.

Our Fundraisers “Imberhorne reports: On a massively emotional night in front of a good crowd, both sides showed tremendous commitment and skills to put on a game worthy of both Adam and Ollie. Imberhorne took the lead halfway through the first half through Cresswell, soon followed by a wonderful team goal finished off by Malone. Sackville came back into the game and scored just before half time.

“Imberhorne came out fired up at the start of the second half and controlled the game for the majority of the half, with two goals from Sub Walton putting the game to bed.

Sackville got a consolation goal but Imberhorne ran out worthy winners and get to keep the Trophy for another year.”

“A fantastic effort from both teams! Thanks also once again to the young fans who cheered encouraged and showed respectful support throughout.

“Another hugely successful evening for both schools and indeed the local Community as a whole; physical and skilful.

“In late 2023 our small TH96 Committee met to discuss arrangements for the annual TH96 run and asked people to save the date of 16th March 2024.

“16th March arrived and on a bright and sunny day 230 people took part in the TH96 run which is a 9-mile route setting off and finishing at Heywood Cricket Club. Due to the date of the run coinciding with St Patricks Day weekend the colour green was chosen for the colour of the T-shirts and displayed the name of our valuable sponsors and CRY logo on the back with TH96 on the front. Under the guidance of Will Purser Cassie provided the start line with a display of red and white balloons.

“As well as a number of entrants running, some took a more leisurely approach and walked the dog or pushed the little one in their pram or walked with friends, children, and grandchildren. Our volunteers positioned themselves along the route to encourage and ensure that everyone was kept safe and followed the correct route.

“DJ Geoff got everyone in the mood with a warmup and played lot of tunes to entertain both runners and the sizeable crowd that had come out to cheer their loved ones on. The start was fantastic thanks to Fara who transferred her abundance of energy, smiley face and enthusiasm to everyone.

Our Fundraisers “The more experienced runners were positioned at the front. The race for the fastest male was close fought at the end with seconds between first and second. There was more of a gap between the first and second fastest female with experience showing. Julienne was on hand to take photographs before the start and everyone going over the finishing line.

“Along the route our volunteers captured the atmosphere too as well as offering words of encouragement and cheering them on. Ryan was on hand to register times at the end of that we had a record of the fastest male and female. Back at Heywood CC everyone who took part or marshalled was treated to a hot dog or sandwich kindly provided by WM Morrisons.

“All in all, a truly amazing day and evening, we are so blessed as a family that we have such amazing people in our lives that offer their support time and time again to raise money for CRY in memory of Tom. “Over £10,000 was raised by online donations and monies handed in on the day which will go towards a further screening scheduled in August 2024 and hopefully the purchase of necessary equipment.”

“On Saturday 15th June 2023, a group of 40 people all climbed Snowdon in the hail, rain, wind and then thankfully sunshine to remember Leigh, who unexpectedly tragically died of a cardiac arrest while he was at home with his loving wife, two boys and two close friends. One of the things Leigh loved to do was climb mountains, especially those in Snowdonia. He’d climbed Snowdon many times with his Dad & Brother, best friend and wife and was determined to take his sons up Snowdon, unfortunatley Leigh, Joe and Sam, didn’t get this opportunity to enjoy and share this experience together.

“No doubt Leigh was with us in spirit, and collectively including Joe and Sam, we achieved the Snowdon trek this Father’s Day weekend. Whilst doing so we raised money for CRY. CRY are continuing to support the process in exploring why this happened to Leigh and support Joe, Sam and family members with any underlying fatal cardiac conditions. As I type, we have raised approximately, £5,700.”

“On Friday 21st June we held ‘Jimmyfest’, a birthday party for James Sheppard raising money for CRY. His friends came together to celebrate James’ life and play games in his memory, and we auctioned off some board games from his collection so they could continue to be played by his friends and family.

We raised a grand total of £1,020 from the night and it was lovely to bring together so many people who knew and loved James.

“During lockdown, James decided he wanted to try his hand at creating artwork.

In his usual fashion, he started by reading books and articles, doing online courses and watching tutorials for weeks before even picking up a pencil or paintbrush.

But when he did, he had an immediate talent for it. In the short time he had before passing away from SADS in April 2021 he created some beautiful pieces primarily in watercolour, gouache and pastels.”

“I should probably start this by sharing where this crazy idea of throwing myself out of an airplane came from and how I ended up jumping for CRY. “I guess that, if I’m honest, a tandem skydive has always been on my bucket list, mix that with the impulsiveness of my ADHD and what do you know? This very quickly went from bucket list to booked.

“It was an easy decision to jump for charity, but why did I choose CRY? “In October 2009 my older sister Kelsey sadly lost her life just moments before she was due to perform in a dance show. She was only 17, had just started college and had her whole life ahead of her. She was so beautiful and such a special person, full of life and made everybody laugh and smile. People loved to be around her. Kelsey died suddenly and without any warning due to a rare heart defect called Ebstein anomaly.

“Unfortunately, the story behind my decision to skydive for CRY doesn’t stop there.

Fast forward to February 2016, I had just returned home from football training and was chatting to my little brother Zac, while I was waiting for the bath to run.

Little did I know this would be the last time I would speak to him alive. My baby brother, just 11 years old, gone just like that, so suddenly and again, with no warning. Zac was such a beautiful boy, kind, caring and funny, the most happy go lucky little (giant) man you could meet. Zac had a heart condition called Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome which was the cause of his death.

“The two heart conditions were not previously thought to be linked or hereditary. Although, it is now reported to

be becoming more and more common that if one sibling has one of these heart defects/conditions, that another sibling has the other.

“I decided that I wanted to raise money for CRY to raise money in my siblings memory to support research for conditions such as Ebstein anomaly and Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome.

“I have been so overwhelmed with the support and generosity from others, I originally I set up a JustGiving page with a target of £500.

“On 21st April I completed my skydive, this was the best thing I have ever experienced.

“Sitting on the edge of the plane without an ounce of fear as with each heartbeat, I felt a surge of determination to honor my sibling’s memory and support others through this charity skydive.

“The jump itself? I guess there is just something about jumping out of a plane and free falling at 120mph that doesn’t quite compare to anything else you could ever do.

“The rush of adrenaline is indescribable as you fall through the clouds amongst the fresh (but very cold) air around you while taking in the incredible views as you fall.

“My instructor Chris allowed me to steer when the parachute opened and we spent a couple of minutes zipping about the sky before touching down softly on the ground below.

“I knew that this skydive had been more than just an impulsive decision turned into a daring feat of bravery; it had been a tribute to my siblings, a love that would never fade. Something I am incredibly proud of doing in their memory. This one was for two, my big sister and little bro.”

“We held the fundraising event on Sunday 25th August at the Victoria Sports and Social Club at Holmes Chapel and this year has been our best by far, raising a fantastic £2,660 for CRY. 33 people took part in the bowls tournament, we had a BBQ going, cake sales and a raffle. Local businesses had been very generous donating raffle prizes, we had a signed Manchester United football and signed Manchester City shirt, the chap who won the shirt immediately put it up for auction, someone bought it for £200 and that money was donated to our total, great generosity!

“So many people put a lot of work into making the day a great success, from the groundsmen who were there early morning, mowing the green to make sure it was in pristine condition. A local butcher provides all the meat for the BBQ free of charge, people selling raffle tickets and football cards throughout the day.”

“On the 31st May 2023 we lost a beloved friend and colleague, Stacy. Stacy’s sudden passing sent shockwaves through the team at The QHotels Collection, and the customers that Stacy looked after as a National Account Director with the company. She truly was adored by many.

“So, on 30th May 2024, nearly one whole year since her passing, two colleagues, but more importantly friends of Stacy set it up so that the sales team did either a 5k or 10k walk near the Chesford Grange Hotel in Warwick, this is one of the company’s most central hotels, so all could attend. The distance was the walker’s choice on the day. A JustGiving page was set with a target of £200, but everyone was thrilled to achieve £605 in donations for CRY.

“The training was intense, and Hutch and I shared many a voice notes on our walks as we do not live close, and we saw many signs of Stacy on our way.

“Then came the day, both feeling so nervous but prepared. It was the hardest challenge we have ever done and I am sure ever will do, but we knew our Stacy was with us when we experienced thunder and lightning the middle of the night (she was never quiet).

“Thanks to the love for Stacy, from her friends, family, colleagues, and also companies she worked with we could not believe that we reached £7,459 on our Just Giving page. Forever grateful, and Stacy is never forgotten.

“We have more plans for a team walk in 2025, and will look hope to raise more in Stacy’s memory.”

“After a good night’s sleep they started their ascent up Ben Nevis, the first peak in torrential rain and very low cloud. Coming down 6 hours later very wet but still in high spirits. Everyone quickly changed out of their wet clothes, had good and drink and climbed back in the mini bus to travel to Scafel Pike. Unfortunately after travelling just over 6 hours they came across the first of the dreaded road closures and after a 3 and a half hour detour, finally arrived at 2.30am to begin the climb of peak 2 in the dark, returning to the van at 7.30am. After refreshment and another quick change of clothes they set off for Snowdon.

Our Mission When Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) was founded in 1995 it was the first organisation to draw attention to the range of conditions that can cause young sudden cardiac death (YSCD).

Every week in the UK at least 12 apparently fit and healthy young people die of undiagnosed heart conditions.

These conditions include hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and other diseases of the heart muscle, as well as electrical heart disorders which can lead to sudden arrhythmic death syndrome (SADS).

CRY aims to reduce the frequency of YSCD through raising awareness amongst the general public and medical community, providing expert cardiac pathology, improving early diagnosis through screening, supporting young people diagnosed and funding research.

CRY also works to guide and support families and close friends affected by YSCD. We provide information to explain what the coroner does, bereavement support, help with NHS referrals and advice on the procedures that usually follow a YSCD. In 80% of cases of young sudden cardiac death there are no prior

symptoms of a heart defect.

CRY publishes a range of medical information written by leading cardiologists that is easy to understand and made available to the public free of charge.
