-While Crocs seem to be very prolific and trendy at the moment, they are not an item of clothing that is predicted to last long. For this year it is recommended that one should not invest in Crocs as they are seen as juvenile and too casual, with their rubber sandal style. They are not a piece of clothing that is timeless and it is recommended that one should rather invest in Uggs. While these are also a current footwear item that are on trend, these are thought to be a trend that will be longer lasting. When you take a look back at when Uggs were previously “in fashion” they remained popular for several years. Taking this into consideration, it is likely that Uggs will be popular for much longer than Crocs and are a more sensible investment.

-One trend that is back in fashion for 2023 is the iconic, but sometimes disastrous, choker that was highly popular in the early 2000s. When we think choker, most think the wiry black loop-the-loop version that was heavily worn by young teens in the noughties. However, thankfully, this is not the style in trend this year. We are happy leave them behind and switch it up to the more elevated and classy look of the flower choker with a thicker band. These are here to stay and look fabulous paired with slip dresses or tailored shirts.

-Finally, Y2K style t-shirts with logos and shapes are being heavily worn and seen on TikTok. These tops may be popular, currently, but this trend is not predicted to last long. They are gimmicky and won’t remain on trend. Instead of wasting a purchase, try and invest in good staples of block colours. This is more likely to remain in your wardrobe longer and can be easily styled and layered.

to Dye For

30 Pink Edit Desinged, Written by Abi Dawkins

Strawberries

To create a pink dye bath, you can use any kinds of strawberry you can find. This can be wild strawberries, store-bought or even home grown. All you have to do is boil the fruit with water, lightly crush them to release the colour and strain out the solids. It will then be ready to use!

raspberries

Boil the raspberries the same as the strawberries with water, and strain away the solids. Rasperries can be combined with other fruits such as strawberries or cherries to achieve a range of hues. Combining these can get you the perfect shade of pink for your dye.

Cherries

To extract a pink dye, select either red or purple cherries and boil the whole fruit in the water until it pops. this will extract the most colour from the fruit. As with the other fruit, strain out the solids to use the liquid as a natural dye.

Natural Pink Dyes

Pink Camellia

Creating a dye bath of pink or red camellia with lemon and salt will create a strong pink or magenta dye. You can experiment with other bloom colour or mix pinks and reds to create a range of dye colours and hues.

Avacado pits

Place your avocado pits and skins in the pot and fill with water. Bring to a boil and turn down the heat to a simmer. Let simmer for one hour. Your water should change color and you can leave them in longer/shorter depending on the shade you want.

roses and lavender

To achieve a brilliant pink dye, a combination of pink or red rose petals and purple lavender is needed. Combined with lemon juice and hot water this will create a lovely pink dye bath. The flowers can be dried or fresh.

If you’ve fallen in love with pink, and don’t have a lot in your wardrobe, here’s a way to dye your clothes pink, without breaking the bank!

Pantone’s Colour of the Year

32 Pink Edit Desinged, Written by Megan O’Hara

Living La “Viva Magenta”

Every year in December, Pantone release what they deem to be the colour of the year for the following year. Last December 1st, they released their decision for the 2023 period. While last year’s choice was Veri Peri (a muted purple/blue tone) this year’s “chosen one” has really stepped up in vividity. The title of this year’s colour is Viva Magenta. It’s a bright, fun and fiery pink shade and is described as a “nuanced crimson tone”.

So, what do we do with this colour? Obviously, no one is obliged to live by the colour of the year and bring it into every aspect of their life, but it can give someone some guidance. It gives us an insight into what to expect for the coming year in terms of interiors, fashion and other textiles. Designers and brands can choose to take this colour on board and have it in mind for their collections. It is expected that this shade of pink will be prevalent amongst the clothes we will see on the runway and highstreet. It is more likely, however, that is seen more throughout fast fashion. This is due to the fact that your favourite fashion houses will typically have a preshow of their upcoming collections months in advance. With the quick turnaround of high-street brands this allows them to utilize this colour more so than luxury brands. It is likely we will see this shade in shops, such as H&M and Primark, in the coming months.

With this colour being such a bright and bold shade, it is predicted that it will be seen everywhere in the summer months. Whether it be on a bikini, a summer dress, or even a cushion for the garden furniture this colour is sure to make a statement. This rocking hue of pink will pop under the glow of summer heat. Not only will this colour be seen throughout different

more. To put it short we will see it everywhere.

So, this is the colour of the year, and that title puts great importance and significance on the shade. However, if it’s not your type of normal colour maybe it is step out of your comfort zone and embrace the power and strength that comes with this hue. But, if it’s not for you, it’s not for you. As mentioned, this is just a statement that some people take inspiration from and is not something one should worship. If you like to stick to colours you know whether that be other bright colours or solely neutrals, you do you. For all we know, your favourite colour could be that of 2024.

This is an annual announcement and as it is so frequent there is no point in investing in tonnes of new pieces that fit the shade only for the colour to be a different one next year. Do with this colour what you want, purchase one piece of clothing or makeup product to see if you like it or just ignore it all together, the choice is yours.

Victoria’s Secret

34 Pink Edit Desinged, Written by Megan O’Hara

know Victoria’s Secret...she’s an old man that lives in Ohio making money of off girls like me... -Jax

While Victoria’s Secret as a brand is trying to make strides currently to become more inclusive and aim to cater for every type of body, it is hard to forget the brand they once were. First set up in June of 1977 in California by businessman Roy Raymund, it was intended to be a lingerie store targeted towards men. An area in which men would feel comfortable shopping for underwear for their wives. He envisioned a boudoir style shop with teak wood and dark drapery to evoke the sense that “Victoria’s Secret” lay behind its masculine front. After five years this famous company was facing bankruptcy and it was taken over by Lez Wexner of L Brands. Wexner took Raymonds vision and completely changed it to aiming to create a brand aimed towards women not men. He took inspiration from the market in Europe, specifically the products of the highend brand La Perla. He wanted to bring the class and elegance of their repertoire but at an affordable price. He not only succeeded but by the early 90s the company had become the biggest lingerie brand in the United States. It was at this time that the brand solidified its image and started its famed yearly fashion show. It was their image that would come to wreck their reputation leaving them nearly obsolete once again...

The fashion show was headed up by Ed Razek, a man who later become one of the most influential names in the fashion industry. He held the power of who would walk the runway and launched many model careers including and not limited to: Heidi Klum and Gisele Bündchen. The shows drew in a humungous audience, the first one to be put online in 1999 gained traction of 1.5 million people, in turn crashing the site. It is evident that with such a large viewership that this brand could have a lot of influence with their audience. The brand coined the term Victoria’s Secret Angel used to promote their angel line of underwear. The models were dressed in skimpy and “barely there” underwear dawned with a face full of makeup. These angels would go on to be seen at the annual show. The shows took it to a step more elaborate in 2000 with the debut of the

“fantasy bra” costing $15 million.

The brand’s sales continued to soar with the creation of three separate entities; Victoria’s Secret Lingerie, Victoria’s Secret beauty and PINK. This rise then began to collapse nearing 2018. The brand failed to adapt to new trends that were circulating around this time, when popularity grew for bralettes and sports bras rather than traditional padded and push-up bras. They also struggled to keep up with their competitors such as Aerie who were branching out towards sizeinclusive ranges of underwear. This has always been where the brand fell short.

Looking back now on their runways, that have not taken place since 2018, it is clear that their whole image and branding was very damaging towards peoples’ body image. As the song goes the marketing team were “cashing in on body issues, selling skin and bones with big boobs”. Not one model looked like a normal body. Ed Razek stated he had “no interest” in using a model larger than a size 8 (which equates to a UK10/12). Similarly, with their print campaigns, models were heavily airbrushed and gave off a “heavenly” and “perfect” image. These standards are impossible to reach and unrealistic for women to achieve. It was this attitude and marketing strategy that led to downfall of the brand. People found their content over sexualised and unrealistic. It was controversial comments made by Razek, however, that topped it off and led to a drastic change.

Following the resignation of its current CEO at the time and the ‘voluntary’ stepping down of Razek, John Mehas became CEO in 2019 and certainly had a lot of damage to repair. He stated “Victoria’s Secret’s brand image is starting to appear to many as being outdated and even a bit ‘tone deaf’ by failing to be aligned with women’s evolving attitudes towards beauty, diversity, and inclusion”. The company has since taken strides to further the brand by making its board of directors more diverse, hiring more body-inclusive and transgender models and having female activists and entrepreneurs as the face of the brand. While the brand has come a long way, it is important to remember and acknowledge its turbulent and demeaning past.

Bimbofication: What is it?

The term 'bimbofication' is a colloquial term derived from the term 'bimbo' which is understood to mean, 'an attractive woman who is pretty, sexualised, naive and uneducated'.

In short, bimbofication is about intersectional feminism and feeling emboldened, whereas society has taught us that we should feel ashamed. It’s about owning one’s sex appeal and no longer minimizing yourself to appeal to social standards written for us by misogynistic men.

A lot of this trend has started on tiktok, by creators showing women that being attractive and feeling good in your body to wear clothes and look the way you want is okay. Female creators such as Chrissy Chlapecka and a lot of others, have a stand to prove that dressing for yourself and feeling comfortable, doesn’t mean youre dumb.

The bimbo aesthetic has a new meaning and its challenging mysogony. This Infamous meme (see under) illustraits a sterotype that dressing ‘hot’ means you’re dumb. the new bimbo rejects that some “bimbos” have said its being a redical leftist.

The new bimbo fashion is inclusive, its not about dressing for anyone else, its about having a confident mindset. This also means saying ‘F you!’ to sexism! Just be comfortable in what you wear.

A huge icon for dressing how you like, but also having something in your head comes from ‘Elle Woods’ (Legally Blonde). She proves all of those stereotypes wrong. Not only does she help out fellow women, she lets the ‘hungry’ men know that shes too good for them.

THE Plastic ICON

to be and longed to play with; Barbie.

From pink to cyan, she has owned all colours through a style tranformation and embodied a fierce, independant role model for all children to look up to. Taking miniature sized fashion to a new level and inspiring designers around the world, this doll has it all. Here are some iconic moments that has proven Barbie to be one of the most inspirational dolls of all time. From unique and inspiring styles of the decades, to taking on over 70 careers, she does it all!

The Iconic and sentimental doll of history has to be the Barbie doll. Dressed head to toe in glamorous pink shades and a bold smile she is the girl every little girl aspires to be. Since 1959, this Mattel Icon has gone on quite a journey and continues to remain one of the strongest toys on the market for children from all over the world. Beginning in just a simple one piece bodysuit she brought elegance and confidence and paved the way for inspiring girls to feel good in themselves and feel unstoppable.

What has been one incredible narrative throughout Barbie’s history is that she is unstoppable and can be successful in any career she choses and boy did she have many! 72 to be exact and that list continues to grow, smashing the glass ceiling and showing young girls and boys that they can be anything they put their mind to! Unlike other dolls, Barbie has always defied stereotypes even those that surrounded young women and girls in the 60’s. Unlike the social norms of women marrying young and starting a family, Barbie shfited expectations and showed freedom that any one can to do whatever they dream of. Although later partnering with her dashing side-kick Ken, Barbie remained the best-selling star of the show.

Inclusiveness has always been a big part of the values that creator Ruth Handler felt important for Barbie to embody. Therefore, the doll has adapted and changed appearance over time to resonate with young children from all different backgrounds and abilities. For example, there have been different collections featuring different body types, hair colours, skin tones, heights and so on.

Likewise, another important and positive change was ensuring Barbie presented a realistic body image for young girls. Showing that not all girls and women will look like the traditional tall, slim doll that Barbie began appearing as and that is completely normal. Furthermore, showcasing a range of bodies in different dolls can help influence a positive mindset, self esteem and make the doll feel more relatable to many. Another similar way that Mattell helped make young girls included was by creating those with prosthetic limbs and Barbie with a wheelchair. This was an incredible effort to help those with diabilities feel seen and just as equal to the doll they grew up with.

The world of Barbie remains solid and an evergrowing success in admiration and sales. With over 40 films, TV series, merchandise, toys, acessories, collaborations and a strong social media presence the doll is simply too hard to ignore! Why would we, she’s simply the best!

HISTORY OF PINK

Pink has been one of the most consistent yet controversial colours throughout history. Worn and used by many famous names, we find out who and why.

The colour pink has been constant in clothing throughout history. It was even discovered by scientists that bright pink is one of the most ancient colours in the world!

During the years the opinion of the colour has been very divided, being one of the most attractive yet repulsive colours. Pink was popular in both men and women’s clothing, in fact, before the 1940s it was known to be a very masculine colour.

The start of pink being popular in modern day fashion was thanks to Madam de Pompadour, the infamous mistress of Louis the XV’s. During the 18th century a portrait was released of the mistress wearing a light blue and pink gown, the pink was then known as ‘Pompadour pink’, and was regarded as a sign of luxury and wealth. This continued up until the late 19th century.

In America during the 1940/50s it was decided that blue would be the colour for boys and pink the colour for girls. Since then pink was known to be a very feminine colour and although pink has always been a romantic colour, it would now also mostly be associated with sweetness and kindness. This is strange, considering it was once a very masculine colour as stated previously, a colour that is now associated with women from birth represents some of the most ‘desired’ traits of a wife for the 1940s and 50s.

PINK in FASHION

it is said, that depending on the women wearing pink, the public have different opinions of it, for example Marylin Monroe in ‘gentlemen preferer blondes’ she wore her iconic hot pink dress, this was a scene and costuming choice that was made erotic.

Mamie Eisenhower a first lady who loved the colour pink and even has a shade of it named after her, was known to be a traditionally feminine woman. She was not at all sexualized for wearing this colour

Pink is rock, from classic to punk to grunge, pink has been a slight consistent in the rock world. Punk rock with its anti-establishment ideology has many artists and album covers sporting the colour.

Pink was one of the favourite colour of the king of rock and roll, photographed in pink in downtown Memphis and even had the first Cadillac he bought coloured pink.

Ringo Starr drummer for the Beatles had a pink military uniform for the Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club album cover session

Pink was another chosen colour of the Ramones on their albums art for example Rocket to Russia and Anthology.

Kurt Cobain even had his hair dyed pink and could be seen wearing a pink jacket!

FILM

AND

PINK IN TV

When you think of harry potter and pink you will instantly think of Dolores Umbridge, one of the most hated characters in the harry potter fandom. Umbridge was said to have almost pink everything from clothes to her office. She was a very feminine character and dressed as such. This is a very big contrast to her personality, she’s a cruel woman, yet she tries to portray herself as sweet and unthreatening. She uses this colour to disguise herself.

In mean girls it’s very known that on Wednesdays

‘The Plastics’ wear pink. Pink is traditionally used to symbolise sweetness and innocence a complete contradiction to the plastics. Making sure they always look perfect in the eyes of their peers, the pink costumes could also be a nod to them being like barbie dolls, something that is already implied with the group’s name.

Pink is now one of Cassie’s identifying colours in Euphoria. Cassie wears light pink a lot to signify innocence and femineity, yet whilst wearing such colours she wears form fitting/tight clothing that highlights her body in an almost revealing way – Cassie is sweet and innocent almost naive at times yet she is almost always sexualized and used by the men in her life.

Lolita. A controversial book and movie, following a young girl and her predatory lover, the story is told from the predator’s point of view. In the movie Lolita the colour pink is quite subtle, from the ribbons in her hair to the bubble-gum she chews. In this film it’s to show that she is a child/ childish and many of her costumes silhouettes aim to show that at times with frills and puff shoulders.

Breast cancer effects thousands of people in the UK and about 1% of breast cancer cases in the UK are in males. Cancer is an illness that can affect anyone regardless of age and gender, so it’s always important to check yourself.

For men the beginning symptoms/signs of breast cancer is a painless lump under the nipple or areola. For women the first noticeable symptom is a lump around the breast or in either of your armpits, most lumps aren’t cancerous, it may just be lumpy boobs (yes, that’s a thing) but it’s always good to check. For women there are also symptoms such as discharge from the nipples streaked with blood or sunken nipples. Thankfully thanks to modern medicine there are different types of treatments to help either get rid of the cancer or slow it down.

For example, some of the most common treatments are mastectomys. This is when the whole breast is removed or breastconserving surgery where the cancer and some normal breast tissue is removed. There are also other treatments such as radiotherapy that you can have, there will be lots of support from your GP if you were to go through this.

P k T TRUTH

48 Pink Edit Desinged, Written by
Grace Dagnall

In the current cost of living crisis, every penny counts and pockets have been pinched like never before. This has meant that shopping for even our everyday essentials is difficult and treating ourselves can feel like a rare occasion. So, it may come as a shock to you to know that you could be paying MORE than men are for everyday essential toiletries!

What is the PINK TAX?

Although not actually a tax, the phrase ‘Pink Tax’ may sound innocent but is rather a disturbing reality for women. The Pink Tax labels the unfair reality when products are labelled and targeted for women are priced higher than the equivalent to men’s.

For example, a product that does the exact same thing and is an essential for both, may cost more for a woman because of its feminine, pink appearance or branding. Likewise, a lot of brands will charge more for a product marketed towards women and will be clever to make it feel an essential for women.

Although usually occuring in women’s essential toiletries or medication, other items in a completely different aisle or shop are also not protected from the inequality. The Pink Tax may have been affecting you a lot earlier in life than you realise! School shopping for a girl over a boy can pinch your purse even more with a price shift for girl’s shirts, skirts etc. In addition, even as a baby the parent will be paying far more for girly, pink branded toys!

This shocking reality questions us to understand why? Why should we have to pay more for the exact product and for the essentials we need to stock up on. Is this really our future? This sexist and unfair financial gain for companies should be stopped. Creating awareness is important and hopefully brands will feel encouraged to prevent misognistic pricing practises as these. Likewise, making it fair for both genders to enjoy a product suited for them with no price difference between. After all, many essential items designed for women are more suitable or designed for us such as razors.

The Pink Tax is Real and it’s coming to pinch your purse Girls!

The razors designed for men are typically, sharper blades compared to the equivalent for women. So, we would prefer to use the women’s but that shouldn’t mean we should pay more. The image below represents this inequality with the pricing information taken from Boots UK.

2.75

When researching price comparisons, it was shocking to learn that although offering affordable prices, they were still charging more for the pretty, pink packaged product. A highstreet brand offering their consumers affordable own brand ranges were still joining in on this disparity. According to ‘The Motley Fool’ women spend over £370 a year on essential items. Morever, it was also discovered that women on average will spend £45 more a year than men on healthcare products necessary to wellbeing. This shocking revelation suggests that overtime women can struggle financially a lot more than men just because of pricing.

How to avoid paying the PINK TAX!

Where possible, avoiding the Pink Tax is important and will help you save the pennies on your shopping. Re-evaluate the essentials you currently buy and ask yourself has the packaging enouraged me to purchase? If so, take a look at

2.00

The men’s branded equivalent and see if it will work the trick! These conscientious decisions will help you save money overall and work towards abolishing the tax. Another great way to save money is by visiting your local GP or sexual health clinic for free healthcare products such as condoms or sanitary products right for you. Likewise, ask your GP which brand of vitamins or medicine they recomend as their suggestions won’t be gender biased. Another useful tip is to shop around different shops or even value shops where products follow the same pricing strategy. Avoiding the Pink tax is possible and refusing to pay it is the best way to prevent your financial struggles and endure this injustice.

56 Pink Edit Desinged, Written by Kinga Filipska

In this society people are expected to work hard, always be productive, but this means that we have less time to take care of ourselves and take a break from time to time. Self-care days help with better physical, mental and emotional health and well-being. Also, self-care is important because it will help you to reduce or eliminate anxiety and depression, reduce stress, improve concentration, minimize frustration and anger, increase happiness and improve energy. Best way to start a self-care day is to turn your phone off and have a detox from social media and screens. Light up some candles, have a bath, listen to relaxing music, and why not do it all in pink.
