EDITOR’S NOTE Music, I remember this one time at school, I got asked to do a speech on music; I didn’t know what to say since the term is so broad, there is too much to say about music, don’t you think? Since then I’m more conscious of the importance and influence of music in our society. Our magazine for young creatives has shown to be very successful reaching gen Z, therefore here we bring a mini edition in which we will give all the importance and exclusivity that music needs. No sections, no other topics, music deserves an edition on its own.

The start of this new decade has been hard and one heck of a bumpy road. The world is turning upside down in a breathtaking speed, (shoutout to COVID19) with a situation like this, that we had never lived before, an event that seems surrealist, I have come to realise how amazing humans can be, how a catastrophe can unite people more than ever and music has a very important presence; music is international, no languages, no barriers, no judgements. Today we can see videos of countries such as Spain and Italy, where people, who found themselves self-isolated because of the virus, playing music, singing through balconies, where the whole community of neighbours listen staring through their windows expectantly.

There will always be problems, catastrophes, whether it is internal conflicts (we all have them,) or a specific situation that is causing us harm; however, I believe that this difficulties and situations, make us appreciate the tiny things in life, value the things that we used to take for granted. Today I value music; I value the way it makes me feel, the way it unites people, how it changes someone’s mood and how it forms a part in our every day lives.

Music is underrated as an art, which reminds me of how little we also value ourselves and how we take for granted other people, especially young creatives; however, creativity is and will always be necessary. Our team has put together this amazing magazine edit, not knowing how important each one of them is, how this magazine that we have put together for you is alive thanks to them, each role was essential to create our music edit, and I am proud to say I have had the privilege to work as an editor with the best team, the most supportive, efficient, hard-working young creatives. Carbon has always been a magazine for young creatives in which we support any artist, we value each person Individually and where different means good, it is a magazine to inspire, to give the opportunity of creating to those who want to have a chance in bringing innovative ideas to this world. With this edit, I have seen all of these values come true. The whole team has had the opportunity to create, to write and to become part of something that I believe we all felt passionate about, music, we have all had the chance to support each other, to bring new ideas and to create, what I think is a very special edition. At the beginning of the edition, some of us were worried, didn’t have confidence in ourselves, we thought it wouldn’t turn out to be the stunning magazine it has come to be. Everyone has had the chance to show off their skills, and I must say they have all proven to be extremely talented.

Today we are proud to show you our music edit, the edit that will connect you to the world through melodic tracks and talented artists, the edit that we all hope you enjoy and that we are eager for you to read. Thank you for loving carbon as much as we do.

Drum & Bass has been around since the 80’s in the UK and by 1990 hardcore Drum & Bass become popular. Hardcore meant that the music had harsh and aggressive sounds that portrayed hip hop and early acid house music, this left music having breaks beats and increased tempo.

It wasn’t until the Techstep was introduced by artists like Konflict and Bad Company’s, that it became more popular again and Techstep began to change the sound with an increasingly dark tone and more funk was added to the music.

Then in 1991-92, reggae music emerged leaving Drum & Bass to have a soft piano melody that had a Jamaican feel with breakbeats between 150-170 BPM. The sound of the music began to evolve and has more drum breaks with low frequency bass lines, this style of music was referred to art Jungle music.

When Drum & Bass revoked from mainstream music, it helped the music grow and become progressively darker in sound which resulted in the birth of the genre UK garage. This style of music was heavily influenced

by Jungle music and had a simple beat and style of music.

Then when jungle music became popular, producers started adding more aggressive sounds and tone with strange noises, funks breaks and loud baselines.

Since the release of Drum & Bass in the 90’s, this music genre has become very diverse and popular. Even only a few artists are well known to the music due to old school Drum & Bass coming back. That doesn’t mean that modern Drum & Bass isn’t becoming as popular as more and more artists use modern technology and modern production ways to create Drum & Bass.

Noxious Records were founded in 2014, by Enfuza, to bring modern and impulsive sounds to Drum & Bass. They began as a small Soundsystem group that toured across the UK throwing parties and events at different locations.

With the help of Noxious records they have been able to DJ and Attend different Drum & Base festivals/events such as Illusive Festival, Boomtown, Poison, French tech and Let it Role. Which has also helped them establish Noxious Records futher.

The events they did attend helped them find their sound with Enfuza providing the main drive for Noxious records and this led to them building a tight network of friends who have become passionate about producing music under the Drum & Bass genre.

In 2020 they released a new record called Glitch Out/Program error created by Archaea. Who is part of the Noxious Record group. The sound in this record focuses on pounding drums, huge fizzing basses and glitching out stabs that were influenced by Phace, early Mefjus and Aggressor Bunx.

Unfortunately, due to the tragic death of Enfuza, things became difficult and they rebuilt Noxious Records with what Enfuza left behind. This led to Noxious Records becoming a huge family that sticks together and continues the legacy of Enfuza using the knowledge and understanding of Drum & Bass.

Since 2016 Noxious Records founded their Facebook page which helps to promote Noxious Records and with the help of the website and other social media accounts. They have managed to gain a selection of viewers that enjoy listening to their music using Soundcloud, Beatport and Spotify.

BoomTown Boomtown is a British festival fair that has takes place from the 12th to the 16th August in South East England, Winchester. This event is based on the creative industry and allows people to explore their work in a theatrical and musical way.

This festival is the largest festival across the UK that allowed everything to be handcrafted and produced by creative individuals.

Most people that work at Boomtown will spend a month setting up the festival and a month taking it down.

Boomtown is completely different from any other festival in the UK as it allows you to fully experience the stories of the music and the diverse line-up Boomtown has each year.

This event is so diverse that even the music is original, this allows festival goers to enjoy a variety of music such as reggae, folk, metal, jazz, hip hop, drum and base, techno, house disco, and jungle.

It’s not just that Boomtown has always been a community event, it brings acceptance to the forefront of everything, with their different cultural events and celebration that respects everyone who attends.

How is Boomtown city made?

There is a lot of effort that event planners put into place to get Boomtown ready for festival goers. They plan each section out to give you full experiences of the main areas at Matterley Bowl and these areas are: Downtown, Hilltop and Temple Valley.

Within these main areas, there are 14 districts that are built up in one large stage and other smaller street events that you can visit while attending Boomtown.

Boomtowns Story With hundreds of musical artists that perform each year, Boomtown is required to evolve and exceed everyone’s expectations by making the atmosphere better than previous years. This requires the artists and workers to come up with new styles of music to fit in with what Boomtown is all about.

Nucleus Stage

At Boomtown there are many different stages that you can visit, but the one that grabbed my attention the most on their website was Nucleus Area 404. This area is based on industrial towns, with vast towers, unknown apparatus and expanding infrastructures that give off orb pulses and flashes that gives this area a mysterious feel.

REDEFINING MAINSTREAM MUSIC José Álvaro Osorio Balvín - J BALVIN - is a Colombian artist from the city of Medellín who creates urban music, particularly reggaeton. J Balvin appears in the highest positions in worldwide music charts and has been winning awards for his work. The Colombian doesn’t stop creating hits and growing as an artist, gaining fans in all parts of the world, Spanish speakers or not.

In addition to this, J Balvin is beginning to be considered one of the most powerful artists in mainstream culture. His growth in social media relates to this, as he does not only have followers because of his music, but also because of his personality and content. As he has said in some of his interviews, he is trying to redefine the mainstream and revolutionize it with his urban music. And he is doing it.

J Balvin believes that fashion is at the same level as music, so he decided to take part in the industry and be involved with multiple brands.

In 2017, he was an ambassador for the New York Fashion Week, representing Latinos in the fashion industry. He has also appeared as a model in the Ovadia and Sons catalog, has debuted as a designer for the GEF brand and has collaborated with GUESS. As time has passed, J Balvin has become more involved in fashion, having a presence in most fashion weeks. For example, in the last Fashion Week in Paris, he was seen on the Louis Vuitton catwalk wearing material of this same brand.

Later, he was interviewed exclusively by the Brand Louis Vuitton for its YouTube channel.

Furthermore, he continues to make brands part of his work. In the last Super Bowl 2020, in which he acted on the break, he wore sneakers in collaboration with Nike Air Jordan. However, the Colombian artist has no exclusivity agreement with any brands, therefore, his presence in fashion has no end.

Thus, we can see that everything J Balvin does is full of colours: his music, the clothes he wears and even his hair on several occasions. This way of seeing his work has taken him to the album 21 that he will be releasing soon.

COLORESC The author of ‘Ginza’, ‘Safari’, ‘Mi Gente’ and ‘Con Altura’ - among many other hits - is currently working on the concept of his new album, which he has called ‘Colores’ (‘Colours’ in English) and that will be out on the 20th of March. It will feature a cover of Takashi Murakami and the whole album will be produced by Sky Rompiendo. He has already released ‘Blanco’, ‘Morado’ and ‘Rojo’, which means ‘White’, ‘Purple’ and ‘Red’, respectively.

‘Colores’ is the album that follows ‘Vibras’ (released on 2018) and it is his last solo album, despite having released ‘Oasis’, a collaboration with Bad Bunny in 2019. With ‘Colores’ we can see how J Balvin has grown, including fashion in his music videos.

In the ‘Blanco’ music video, we see how J Balvin has been inspired by OFF-White, wearing their clothes and making a psychedelic video. The artist said on several occasions that he is a big fan of Virgil Abloh’s work. We can see in this video a more urban side of J Balvin.

In ‘Morado’, we can see how the video clip is treated in a darker aesthetic according to the colour and we can see how both J Balvin and the models wear high fashion clothes. Everything is treated with a very careful aesthetic because purple is related to luxury.

On the contrary, in ‘Rojo’, we can see J Balvin tellings a love story that ends in tragedy and he makes references to pain, blood and passion, according to the colour red. We see a video where J Balvin and different people wear white and red.

We can see how all the details have been taken care of because of the use of warm colours even in the post production of the video.

With these three videos, it is clear that J Balvin bears in mind all the details of his work, and as we have said before, the colours are so important to him that the whole theme of his new album is related to them.

YHLQMDLG Bad Bunny, the Puerto Rican artist who has currently become one of the most popular and loved urban artists internationally with millions of followers on his social networks. He released his successful album on February 29, He made it on a technicality, forgoing the usual Friday at midnight drop, Bunny chose to use the leap year day. We see what he did there.

The new album titled “YHLQMDLG: Yo halo lo que me da la gana”, translated to ‘I do whatever I want,’ a title that alone is capable of summarising the nature of this artist. I do what I please summarises the reggaeton genre in its totality.

His songs include an immense list of contributors.

Daddy Yankee, Yaviah, Nesi, Ñengo Flow, Sech, Mora, Jowell, Randy, Myke Towers, Arcángel, Kendo Kaponi, Pablo Chill-E, Duki and, attention, Anuel AA, one of the artists of the moment.

Once again, he created this masterpiece without the backing of

a multinational. Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, his real name, presented all of this on Thursday in the Jimmy Fallon program.

With painted nails, dangling shoulder-length earrings, a skirt and a T-shirt that reported the murder of a transgender woman

in his country. We can already see his modern edgy vibe, that grows away from the typical reggaeton artist stereotype.

There are people who believe he has nothing exceptional to offer,

that he hides his lack of musical talent behind his extravagant looks, but Bad bunny is actually an impressive artist, who knows

how to do many things well. He is only 25 and up till four years ago he worked as a packer in a supermarket. Bad Bunny has been lowering the tone to the old school codes, renewing himself. He has managed to launch himself into stardom in record time, and managed to be one of the greatest Latin music artists of the moment

Despite his nasal and serious monotone voice, packed with auto-tune, he is capable of sounding versatile and melodic. His

songs are sticky, insolent and fun. He is the new pop. Bringing a vintage sound; a blender where the could fit from the naif

trap to the Lil Yachty, a review of the entire Caribbean range: reggaetón, bachata, dembow, and even reggae, to samples of

samba classics, or the sad Argentine trap. The amount of music genres enriches his album, reaching more people. The sound of

the album is dry, sharp borders almost the industrial sound, close to avant-garde electronic music.

The entire album is crossed by explicit subjectivism. There are hardly any changes from the first person point of view.

Bad Bunny’s album is exciting, it has everyone ‘perreando.’ His

music is new but has a touch of old school reggaeton. His new masterpiece pays homage to reggaetón’s past and future, this

album would be hard to beat, Benito has changed this music genre forever, he is a huge inspiration to all young artists and will continue to impress us with his innovative ideas.

THE CONNECTION BETWEEN J BALVIN AND BAD BUNNY Oasis is the very first album created by two of the biggest talents in the latin industry of music, two artist who have reached the international market keeping their latino roots.

This 13 song album is making everyone crazy, and has stepped up the music genre, making it very difficult record to beat, challenging every other artists in the industry, including themselves.

J Balvin, the 34 year old Colombian star, and Bad Bunny, the famous 25 year old Puerto Rican singer and producer, have become very successful artists expanding the reach of Latin music, while still challenging themselves.

They both started with reggaeton and, with their experimental touches and international collaborations, they are part of a new generation of artists who have reached pop stardom with that popular flow known as urban music. They have been defined as “the two stars that run the most creative risks.” Bad bunny believes that music is free, and that an artist doesn’t have to stick to one musical genre giving a message of union and inclusivity; and this is one of the main reasons both artists have become so big even outside the latin market.

In recent years, this couple of artists have exploited the collapse of musical genres and the almost unlimited reach of digital broadcasting to expand their music in an unique way. They have even participated as guests in “I Like It,” Cardi B’s successful hit, while still singing and rapping in Spanish. They create lyrics with specific geographical references and cultural allusions, to bring the latin music into the international market.

The artists met at a J Balvin concert in Puerto Rico, when Bad Bunny was a rising artist on SoundCloud. The Puerto Rican has said that he had to leave the studio to cry while recording his first collaboration with Balvin, the 2017 song “si tu novio te deja sola,” a success that now has more than 875 million views on YouTube.

The couple continued to present numerous mixes together, but said they really understood the power of their chemistry after “I Like It,” which was nominated for Best Grammy Recording of the Year. More than a year ago, the duo began to mock the possibility of a full collaborative album but it was in the background when they released and promoted their respective solo productions worldwide.

The result of both artists uniting their talents is embodied through the spectacular album ‘Oasis,’ Balvin and Bad Bunny, who share a particular taste for ostentatious costumes and jewels, continue touring the pan-Latin sounds without focusing only on the energy of old-school reggaeton or the current influence of the trap Atlanta in urban music. Despite their bond in music and aesthetics, their dynamics are very different and have completely different creative processes: Balvin likes to improvise his rhymes and melodies in the booth, while Bad Bunny, with a more reserved and introverted personality, rehearses several times in private before facing the final outcome.

What is ‘LoopStation’, loop station is a competition held each year showcasing a world of beatbox and music. Each contestant will be head to head as they battle to out to become the best in the world.

Each battle is a total of 3 minutes in which they will create a song from their voices and a piece of equipment called a ‘looper’.

The rules are simple, impress the crowd, impress the judges, become the best.

The community for the battles are all very humbled as the contestants have no angry or hate for each other but the pure joy of music and entertainment.

This isn’t an easy task as the judges can be changed throughout the battles as you would need to perform for all tastes. One of the judges is a world famous beatboxer called Tom Thumper, known for his incredible voice skills and also being on TedEx.

In 2017 this is where the battles truly kicked off, the videos can be seen throughout platforms like YouTube, FaceBook and Instagram as community is consistently growing with millions of views online and for most if not all contestants showing their presents with thousands of followers online.

In 2019 the winner of LoopStation called ‘RYTHMIND’ held in Berlin, smashed his way through all stages. RYTHMIND is also part of a group called ‘Berywam’ made up of four other beatboxers who have also been featured on the loop station battles if this is through battles or even being a judge. They were seen on Americas Got Talent in 2019 coming into the semi-finals and also releasing there own songs such as their most recent song called ‘Beriddim’ personally one of my favourites.

Along side ‘RYTHMIND’ there are various other contestants who are very well known within the community, MB14, SOSO, SARO, NME, B-ART and more.

Known as ‘best kept secret’ on the rap internet, Kenny Mason from Atlanta has a gift for candid lyrics and a varied dynamic. At 25 years old, Mason already has buzz-tracks such as ‘Hit’ and ‘Nike 2’ but it seems like 2020 might be the year that he loses his ‘secret’ title.

Some people might have heard of Deb Never from her appearance on Brockhampton’s ‘NO HALO’ but real fans will know her for tracks such as ‘Ugly’, ‘Swimming’ and ‘Out of Time’ which bring a pop ft punk ft rap vibe.

With what she made of herself already in 2019, 2020 looks nothing but hopeful for the grunge-pop singer.

Howard’s University MAVI is quite the multi-tasker. Doing a major in biology and a minor in psychology, he plans to be a neuroscientist.

Baby Keem is arguably already very successful after breaking through with his single ‘Orange Soda’ and a six-show tour with attendees including Drake and A$AP Rocky. At only 19 years-old, the Las-Vegas raised talent is heading towards greatness.

The Flamenco influence

Flamenco has always been one of the most impressive and beautiful arts performed, coming from the Spanish and admired by everyone.

While Rosalía is the genre’s international star, a whole generation of artists are offering contemporary spins on the traditional Andalusian form.

The essence of flamenco dates back hundreds of years, and the lyrics of every song encrypt the history of Spanish and gypsies, Andalucía has been influenced by the occupation of different cultures throughout history, and in the chanting, we can perceive how people adapted to the changes brought by the people invading this land. There are songs about the Christian Reconquest, the Expulsion of the Muslims, the persecution of the gypsy community, the colonial era and even slavery. Flamenco is the biography of those who lived in southern Spain.

This genre is so complex it could almost be considered to have its own musical language.

Nowadays you’ll hear trap and reggaeton amongst the Spanish youngsters, but also flamenco. This is something that young artists such as Rosalia are starting to bring back, the essence of flamenco to a more modern, edgy generation.

On the surface, this music reflects the pain and suffering, accompanied by traditional handclapped rhythms, these methods may seem old and distant from the music we hear now; but in reality, flamenco is the storytelling from the streets. In Spain, flamenco soundtracks ghetto life.

Rosalía, flamenco’s first global pop star, first encountered the sound of this genre in the park growing up in her Barcelona suburb, Sant Esteve.

The combination of her amazing reach to people through her social media, her incredible, maximalist visuals, and her unique voice, face, and moves, resembling a very typical Spanish/flamenco stereotypical imagery have made her the genre’s most visible artist, reaching the international market.

But she is just one amongst all the young artists who have turned flamenco into a modern mode of expression and storytelling.

It is very common for Spain’s new rap and trap artists to use flamenco as a source of inspiration to their music, showing proudly the imagery of a working class, immigrant sound and aesthetic. Today, there’s a huge influence of contemporary flamenco to Spain’s trap and reggaeton scenes, with artists from each genre often adding guest features to each other’s tracks.

1. What’s your full name, age and where are you from?

Harvey Marwood, 16, Tonbridge, Kent 2. How old are you and when did you start music?

16 Years Old - I first started music seriously only a few months ago probably around June time (2019). I had been thinking about releasing something for years, but had never followed through with any thoughts due to a lack of knowledge and equipment. In May 2019, I released my first single ‘Tranquility’ - and though very hardly mixed and mastered - to date has over 35,000 streams. When it surpassed the 20,000 streams marks, via a feature in Discover Weekly’s on Spotify, I decided I going to take it more seriously, write more and investment in more equipment so my sound quality could go up a notch.

6. How did you get in contact with GRMDAILY and what happened? (mention the music video, views, the process etc)

The GRM Daily business all came about from KA Drinks. I saw an ad running on Instagram for the KA Get Rated Competition 2019, which at the time I did not know much about. The competition consisted of various upcoming artists competing against one another in order to get a place in the final where a public vote would decide the overall winner for the competition. For this I had to perform live in Hackney to a series of well well-known industry figures - these judges were Da Beatfreakz, Joelah, and Mercston. The performance didn’t go as well as I wanted 3. What first got you into music? to but the judge’s saw something in me and then subsequently put me I had started going to gigs at the start of last year, something that I began through to the final which went down to a public vote. Everybody that to thoroughly enjoy. Live perfomances and the ability to make people had been supporting me so far voted and I ended up winning the whole vibe and mosh to your music had a great appeal to me - something which competition, which was a large milestone for me. in my opinion evidently is reflected in the style of beat in my first 2 singles. As I gradually moved back into listening to a wider range of music again, my sound started to change and I focused on wordplay and lyrics, as well as using harder beats. Stormzy is one of my biggest influences. I was lucky enough to attend two of his ultra-exclusive home town shows, in which he performed some of his new album for the very first time. On both nights, I waited outside the venue back entrance for him, where we took multiple photos and had chats both nights about each others music. He was a very humble man, who promised to check out my video on GRM Daily when he had the time. The following day I made a tweet about the couple of nights of music, and posted the pictures of us, in which he replied to.

5. How would you describe the music that you typically create?

I wouldn’t be able to describe the music I create at the moment. I am still in the process of finding my sound and discovering what music I enjoy creating the most. I am really working hard at the moment to try and find the style of music I enjoy making the most and investing more time into it, as well as trying to stay versatile.

8. Where have you performed and any upcoming shows for 2020?

So far, I have performed at the Tunbridge Wells Forum and Hoxton Basement, and I have some confirmed dates for multiple venues in Camden and another couple shows in Tunbridge Wells to play. I recieved very welcome news the other day that I am going to be supporting Everyone You Know on one of their UK tour dates, which is very exciting.

9. What is your song ‘Pyschic’ about?

Psychic was written in my bedroom after a long night of trying to produce and write about complex things, causing me to get writer’s block. I had a short break then came back to writing about my emotion’s and feelings towards people as I felt I could write something about that during the given time - ‘feel like I know what your thinking I’ve gone psychic’ inferring I know the fake people in my life when I am around them, and focus to block them out. It’s also about my background and even has hints of politicala and social issues about crime in our generation. I wouldn’t be able to say it is about a particular subject other than raw opinion and emotion.

10. What’s next for your career? (new music, any big connections, or people you are going to be working with) i’m currently working on trying to get together an EP as well as trying to find my sound. I’m keeping all the people that I’m working with on the downlow so it’s more of a surprise when I release. at the moment I just want to find the style of music that I most enjoy making and pursue to create more music of that style. I’m working so hard on new music, and I’ve got a live shows coming up so I just wanna make sure they bang as 43 much as possible. 2020 is going to be a big year for real.
