People talk about Puerto Rico's recovery when we should be discussing our self-realization; therefore, our actions are aimed at achieving it, focusing on social justice, sustainability, and peace. For us, it is nothing new; Caras has been dedicated to this community, environmental, and educational work for 16 years. The comprehensive development of our people, who can live in community and in a vibrant natural environment, is our recipe for prosperity.
Creating change is possible, and we have evidenced it this year through so many significant achievements in our school, environmental education program, and in the March for Peace, where over 1,000 students were present to curb violence. In our 2022-2023 report, you will find evidence after evidence of how we have managed to steer our community towards self-actualization. We need your participation and contribution to continue on this path to a peaceful, just, and sustainable Puerto Rico. Help us transform Puerto Rico; be part of the change.
Caras con Causa is an organization that drives community development to eradicate poverty through community, education, and ecology programs in marginalized communities of Cataño and Guaynabo.
— Mission
Drive sustainable development through community organization, education, and the environment alongside the communities of Cataño and Guaynabo.
Vision
A just and sustainable Puerto Rico where we reach our maximum potential.
Our Education Program offers tutoring projects, literacy reinforcement, university access, a robotics team, an internship program, and our Escuela con Causa Rosalina Caraballo González
Our Community Program is based on participation, empowerment, and various projects, such as housing, leadership, youth, emergencies, food, support for older adults, and case management
Ecology
Our Urban Ecology Program seeks to conserve the natural resources of the area, incorporating reforestation programs, environmental education, and community science, with an emphasis on civic participation
Our educational programs for children, youth, and adults drive their comprehensive development and promote their leadership.
We seek to achieve the individual's maximum potential through excellent education and enriching experiences that allow the formation of a holistic being with collective awareness and action to improve the quality of life of their families and communities in harmony with the environment.
Our centers offer tutoring for students from 1st to 12th grade. The locations include Vietnam Estudia (grades 16) in the Vietnam community, Puente Blanco Educa (grades 1-6) in the Puente Blanco community, CoCoVi Centers* at Onofre Carballeira School, Cataño Beach (grades 6 - 8), and Rosalina Caraballo School (6th-12th) in Amelia. We highlight recent achievements, such as crafts workshops with external personnel, integration of biodiversity activities, and restoration of the basketball court.
In addition to academic support, we provide extracurricular activities such as sports and workshops (mindfulness, crafts) focused on personal growth, justice values, and social development. Our centers operate from Monday to Thursday, from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
During the summer, our tutoring centers offer two and three-week camps. In the camps, students participate in activities aimed at reinforcing Spanish and math academic skills, fine arts, and ecology in a fun and dynamic way.

The Escuela con Causa Rosalina Caraballo González (operated by Caras) promotes the human development of students and their families through a comprehensive development approach focused on a framework of sustainable community development. It is a free, nonsectarian, and inclusive charter school that serves the communities of Cataño and northern Guaynabo. For the 2023-2024 academic year, there are 310 students enrolled, 96% of whom are below the poverty threshold, and 34% are part of the special education program.
Rosalina is a restructuring school converted into a charter school. This model is the most challenging to launch and maintain successfully (in contrast to traditional public schools and new charter schools), and, generally, its students present more urgent academic, emotional, and behavioral needs than those of other public schools. This is especially true in light of the earthquakes (2020), the pandemic (2020-2023), and government agencies' political turmoil and operational instability.

Through the Robotics League of Cataño-Guaynabo North, we seek to strengthen the school experience and diversify academic experiences with the development of our students as the ultimate goal so that they can overcome the socio-economic and environmental challenges that affect them and become forces for action and change. The FIRST LEGO League Challenge is a program for youth aged 9 to 14 that allows them to develop skills in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) while solving real-world problems through meaningful and playful learning.
Annually, FIRST LEGO selects a theme that promotes the development of teamwork skills, creativity, problemsolving, and technology and engineering skills development. This year, the theme worked on both the innovation project and the programming project was #firstforward, focused on transportation.

The Ecology Program promotes environmental conservation through reforestation, environmental education, and community science to strengthen ecological services and counteract climate change, improving the quality of life for all. This year, Urban Roots and the Community Laboratory provided educational interventions, using school nurseries as a 'living laboratory.'
Students learned about plants, adaptations, and reforestation in gardens and the natural reserve. Our research, conducted with the participation of more than 600 students, reveals truths about the state of the environment and validates the importance of civic action for its rehabilitation.
Urban Roots focuses on participative reforestation with community members, students from Cataño and North of Guaynabo schools, and volunteers. In this way, we rehabilitate the natural environment using endemic flora to promote native species, beautify communities, attract wildlife, and restore ecosystem services. Our reforestation efforts create pollinator gardens and micro-forests to establish green spaces in communities to provide habitat and food for pollinating species, increase biodiversity, and mitigate the effects of climate change.
We also carry out participative reforestation activities in the Ciénaga las Cucharillas Natural Reserve alongside residents and students from the communities we serve. Rehabilitating the Reserve is a key strategy to reduce the impact of flooding and mitigate area contamination while conserving a natural area for the use and enjoyment of communities, as well as providing field educational experiences for students from all public schools in the area.

We have created a network of plant nurseries for propagating native and endemic plants, among others of cultural value, that supply our reforestation activities. In turn, the nurseries provide educational experiences for students and residents who take ownership of the propagation and planting processes. We currently have nurseries in seven schools and another larger production located at our facilities.

Our community action efforts are based on a participation, empowerment, and selfmanagement model. Additionally, we seek to increase civic participation and raise awareness of our cause through the integration of volunteers.
We work hand-in-hand with community leaders to promote the self-management of communities by supporting the following initiatives: community organization and leadership; accompaniment to the older adult population; community beautification; support to residents with particular needs; responses to emergencies; and promoting cultural and democratic participation activities.
Junte de Vecinas del Pueblo: A community board was formed in collaboration with local leaders, and cases referred by them were addressed.
Vietnam Community Board and Vietnam Estudia Tutoring Center: Support activities were carried out for these community entities to defend the community's permanence against possible unfounded evictions. Multisectoral Community Mitigation Program of the Department of Housing: Caras con Causa was invited to represent the community in the relocation process out of the flood area and collaborated in the program's first phase of community organization.
We assist neighbors who do not have the capacity or necessary resources to beautify their homes through mutual aid and volunteering. Our community beautification efforts enhance the community environment and contribute to quality of life through the enjoyment of a clean, painted, and loving home. Volunteers and community neighbors clean the property by removing debris, pruning the yard, cleaning the house inside, and painting it outside, performing minor repairs, and other household chores. Mostly, this is done in homes of elderly people or those with a health condition or in homes of single mothers.

Additionally, we deliver non-perishable food items and purified water. People have been identified during hurricane emergencies and/or floods, referred by other organizations, and referred by community leaders.
“Compartir con Causa” has been held monthly since November 2022. The purpose is for people over the age of 60 to get out of their homes and engage in recreational activities and workshops for emotional-spiritual healing through art, enjoyment, and laughter therapy.

The Christmas Party in Vietnam is a community activity for cultural promotion that began during the community's fight for its permanence. This year, the annual activity featured the participation of students from Rosalina Caraballo School, who delighted the community with musical performances and a choreography with sign language.
The “Marcha por la Paz” is an annual activity that brings together all sectors of Cataño and Northern Guaynabo, including communities, public residential areas, civic and faith-based groups, businesses, shops, both municipalities, and their departments. It is a proactive act to claim individual and collective peace to counteract violence in our communities and create a more just, sustainable, and peaceful society. The march has been held since 2019. This year it took place on Friday, March 24, 2023.
Our volunteer program is designed to advance our mission and promote civic participation in social justice work. It provides meaningful opportunities for both young people and adults from the communities we serve, as well as the general community, to bring about positive change.
Our volunteers dedicated themselves to supporting our projects throughout the year. They provided service in our tutoring centers, and participated in community beautification activities, tree planting, and gardening, among other activities. Among the partner entities that organized volunteer groups are Rosalina Caraballo School, GFR Media Group, Trane, Colegio San Ignacio, MCS, Para Servirle and others.
Along with our partners Amizade (“friendship” in Portuguese), we coordinate programs for universities and groups from the U.S. that offer a service experience and cultural exchange in Puerto Rico. Among this year's participants are: the University of Illinois, Idaho University, Lead NY, and the Academy for Global Citizenship. These programs support our projects as well as raise awareness about community efforts.
We are excited to announce that in 2023-2024, our youth will participate in an overseas program.
