Takács Quartet

October 15 Takács Quartet Sunday, 3:00pm / Music Room Founded in Budapest in 1975, the Takács Quartet have since won countless awards around the world and have become known for their innovative programming and outstanding technical expertise. For their Caramoor debut, this preeminent quartet presents a program ranging from one of Haydn’s most ambitious chamber works to the sinister mood of Shostakovich to Brahms’ — in his own words — “very dainty, but brilliant” string quartet. Roots Music in the Music Room Saturday, 8:00pm / Music Room Noam Pikelny is one of the world’s greatest banjo talents. Perhaps best known for his work in the forward-thinking bluegrass band Punch Brothers, Pikelny made a name for himself as a solo artist after receiving the inaugural (and prestigious) Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo & Bluegrass. Now, for the first time in his career, Pikelny is going completely solo leaving the accompaniment behind and letting his own striking baritone voice lead the way. Tickets starting at $20

Evnin Rising Stars

Pamela Frank, Artistic Director The Evnin Rising Stars program began in 1992 and has been led since 2008 by violinist Pamela Frank. Distinguished artist/mentors work alongside a new generation of outstanding young instrumentalists on the great masterworks of the chamber music repertoire. The culmination of this week of intense collaboration and musical discovery is an opportunity for the public to witness musicians on their way to becoming legends themselves.

November 5 Verona Quartet

2017–18 Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence Sunday, 3:00pm / Music Room Verona Quartet inaugurates their residency at Caramoor with a program of spirited classics of the string quartet repertoire by Ravel and Beethoven, as well as a new work by American composer Sebastian Currier which they premiered earlier this year. Recognized by The New York Times as an “outstanding ensemble of young musicians,” and having won numerous competitions worldwide, the Verona are one of today’s most compelling young string quartets. American Roots Fall Benefit Concert Saturday, 8:00pm / Music Room Join us this fall to celebrate and support Caramoor’s American Roots Music programs by enjoying an intimate benefit concert with British folk rock legend Richard Thompson. Hailed as one of the top 20 guitarists of all time by Rolling Stone magazine and widely recognized as one of the world’s most critically acclaimed songwriters, Richard Thompson returns for a unique solo acoustic performance in the Music Room. Jolle Greenleaf, Artistic Director Saturday, 5:00pm / Music Room This December, one of New York’s preeminent vocal ensembles, TENET, brings light and joy to one of the longest nights of the year in a heartfelt program of intimate carols to celebrate the season. A vocal quintet joins together with lute to perform poignant and lovely renditions of carols — both new and old — with some surprising arrangements to warm the heart. The Rosen House, decorated for the holidays, will be open from 4:00pm for self-guided tours and complimentary refreshments. Tickets start at $20

March 11 Schwab Vocal Rising Stars Steven Blier, Artistic Director Sunday, 3:00pm / Music Room Join us as we travel the British Isles! Artistic Director Steven Blier selects four young voices and a pianist for a week-long residency which includes daily coaching, rehearsals, and workshops, culminating in a Music Room performance to bring these songs to life. Assisted by Michael Barrett, Associate Artistic Director of the New York Festival of Song (NYFOS), and developed in conjunction with NYFOS, this bracing survey of British song will offer four centuries of musical elegance, razorsharp wit, and refined sentiment. March 29 Colin Jacobsen, violin Nicholas Cords, viola Edward Arron, cello Thursday, 7:30pm / Music Room Caramoor favorites Colin Jacobsen (founding member of The Knights and Brooklyn Rider), Nicolas Cords and Edward Arron (both Evnin Rising Star alumni) join forces for a special performance of Bach’s iconic and beloved Goldberg Variations, arranged for string trio. Opening the program will be Biber’s haunting Passacaglia from his Mystery Sonatas, for solo violin. April 14 Wycliffe Gordon and His International All-Stars Presented in Collaboration with Jazz at Lincoln Center Saturday, 8:00pm / Music Room We are thrilled to welcome Trombonist of the Year (Jazz Journalists Association 2016) Wycliffe Gordon and his International All-Stars to Caramoor. Gordon, a former member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and the Wynton Marsalis Septet, has built an impressive career touring the world performing hard-swinging, straight-ahead jazz. His unmatched modern mastery of the plunger mute, his exceptional technique, and his signature sound have solidified his place in musical history. Tickets start at $20

April 15 Richard Goode, piano Sunday, 3:00pm / Music Room We invite you to the Music Room for an intimate piano recital by the incomparable Richard Goode, hailed as one of the “finest pianists in the world” (The Washington Post). Goode, known in particular for his interpretations of Beethoven, will offer one of the composer’s late masterpieces, the Sonata Op. 101, together with Debussy’s enchanting Preludes, Book II. The program begins with Renaissance and Baroque masters Byrd and J.S. Bach. April 22 Anthony Roth Costanzo, countertenor with Ruckus Sunday, 3:00pm / Music Room Join us for a captivating concert of cantatas by Scarlatti, Handel and Vivaldi featuring the “utterly riveting” (The New York Times) and indemand American countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo. Appearing with the newly-minted period instrument ensemble Ruckus, this “bona-fide star” (New Yorker) is sure to leave you breathless with every word and note. The program will also include instrumental works by Couperin, Saint Colombe and Marais. Tickets start at $20

April 29 Verona Quartet

2017–18 Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence Sunday, 3:00pm / Music Room Continuing their residency at Caramoor, the Verona Quartet returns to perform works of great emotional depth by Beethoven, Shostakovich, and Brahms. The New York Times praises the quartet as “cohesive yet full of temperament…vibrant, intelligent…” Equipped with robust experience mentoring young musicians, the Verona Quartet will provide music education in local schools through Caramoor’s Student Strings program this spring. May 3 The Mind and Music of Leonard Bernstein Lecture & Concert by Richard Kogan, MD

Tuesday, 7:00pm / Music Room Caramoor favorite and esteemed scholar Richard Kogan returns to continue his series diving into the Mind & Music of the composers and musicians whose works we know and love but whose minds tell us a a deeper story. Marking Leonard Bernstein’s centenary, Dr. Kogan, a Juilliard-trained pianist, will combine his lecture with performance examples that are as relevant as they are technically masterful. T

he Rosen House is the heart of Caramoor and the center of its musical origins. When founders Walter and Lucie Rosen opened their doors to share their love of music and art, they created a world where people could pause, think, dream, and

feel joy and hope for humankind. The Rosen House lives on as a site for these possibilities — as a venue for concerts that enrich and enlighten, a home for art and architecture from other worlds and times, a place to make holiday memories with family, and a pleasant spot for afternoon tea with friends. We welcome you to take part in the Rosens’ beautiful legacy and visit the Rosen House this season. Rosen House tours are Mondays through Fridays by appointment. Our 11:00am Wednesday Morning Concerts include a 45-minute performance in the majestic Music Room or Spanish Courtyard followed by a tour of the historic Mediterraneanstyle Rosen House, an optional seasonally inspired buffet lunch, and freedom to explore the gardens. See what they are like in the fall and the spring!

Spend time relaxing with friends and enjoying a formal tea service in the grand setting of the Summer Dining Room, including a variety of tea sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and preserves, delicious desserts and a variety of fragrant teas. Before the Tea, enjoy a marvelous tour of the historic Rosen House, and leave yourself time afterwards to stroll through our bucolic gardens and grounds.

December 17 Santa Visits the Rosen House Sunday, 2:00pm / Music Room

October 30 Spooky Tales

Jolly Saint Nick comes to Caramoor to fill the Rosen House with holiday cheer. The little ones will be in for an adventure with I Spy a Santa or Two in the Music Room, followed by a 30-minute concert of favorite holiday songs when Santa Claus will appear to delight the whole family. Santa’s favorite snack — milk and cookies — will be served in the cloisters. Bring your cameras and begin the festive season with joy!

Monday, 3:30pm / Music Room Come with your little ones to a riveting storytelling performance celebrating Halloween. Following the performance, a special brew (hot cider) and other ghostly treats (cookies) will be served in the Summer Dining Room. Come in costume! Prizes given to all!

December 6–14 Holiday Tea Musicales 1:00pm / Music Room The magic of the season is tangible throughout the Rosen House! Take part in Caramoor’s great holiday tradition of sing-alongs with charismatic musicians, festive decorations, and tea service in the majestic Music Room. Enjoy an assortment of finger sandwiches, scrumptious holiday treats and a variety of teas (hot chocolate with marshmallows for the little ones). For a more luxurious experience of the Holiday Teas, book the VIP option, which includes preferred seating, artisanal chocolates and more.
