The Rosens have left you the keys and the gates are open for you to enjoy the gardens, the Mediterranean architecture, and especially the music. You feel the excitement right when you enter, just before settling in for an evening of masterpieces performed by the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, or a day discovering artists amid the grounds at a Jazz or American Roots Music Festival, or a tour taking you back to the Renaissance in the historic Rosen House. Caramoor is made for you to explore.

Thursday, 7:00pm / Spanish Courtyard / Tickets start at $15 Bel Canto Young Artists Timothy Cheung, piano Manuel García, Rossini’s opening night tenor in Il barbiere di Siviglia, was also a prolific composer and singing teacher. In 1830–31 he wrote a series of brilliant one-act “operettas” with piano accompaniment, to be performed by his students. Un avvertimento ai gelosi (“Advice to the Jealous”) showcases the bel canto virtuosity and expressive flair that were García’s hallmarks as a performer and instructor.

Vieaux performs Ginastera’s only original composition for guitar, while the Escher String Quartet finds the historical through-line connecting the seemingly disparate Quartets of Haydn and Shostakovich. Vieaux joins the Quartet for the Boccherini Quintet, which they recorded as part of the Music@Menlo: Bridging the Ages album series.

Artist-in-Residence Angela Meade, whose revelatory Caramoor performance of the same composer’s Norma was hailed as “a truly perfect night at the opera” by Das Opernglas, takes on the demanding role of Imogene for the first time in her stellar career. Tenor Santiago Ballerini, who triumphed here two seasons ago in La favorite, returns as Gualtiero, joined by the brilliant young bass Harold Wilson in his Caramoor debut.

The legendary tango composer, Astor Piazzolla was inspired by Vivaldi’s masterpiece to create his own “Four Seasons of Buenos Aires,” which Artist-in-Residence, Jason Vieaux will perform with bandoneonist Julien Labro.

Hailed by the New York Times as “terrific,” The Calpulli Mexican Dance Company celebrates the rich diversity of Mexican and Mexican-American cultural heritage. With an evening that will explore traditional dances from a 100-year-old wedding dance of Veracruz to the popular “La Bamba,” this fun, interactive event will transport children and their families to a colorful world of inspiring music and movement.

Winner of the ASCAP Harold Adamson Lyric Award, the Los Angeles Times said Fullbright writes songs that are “impressively and potently economical, mostly stripped to the emotional essence through poetically concise lyrics and heart-rending musical settings.”

Bel Canto at Caramoor Presents Petite Messe Solennelle by Rossini

Sunday, 4:00pm / Venetian Theater / Tickets start at $20 Bel Canto Young Artists Rachelle Jonck, conductor Derrick Goff, piano Timothy Cheung, piano Lucy Tucker Yates, organ The final concert celebrating Bel Canto at Caramoor features a choral gem from one of opera’s greatest composers. Rossini surprised the musical world by retiring from the theater when he was only 37; he astonished it by emerging at nearly twice that age to compose “the last mortal Sin of my Old Age,” his Petite Messe Solennelle (1864), containing some of his most beautiful and expressive music.

Featuring tunes from their popular release, Viper’s Drag, Butler, Bernstein & The Hot 9 will deliver once again “a scintillating set in which the earliest roots of jazz were transported to the age of 21st-century postmodernism.”

Summer Season Finale Orchestra of St. Luke’s Sunday, 4:00pm / Venetian Theater / Tickets start at $25 Pablo Heras-Casado, conductor Jean-Yves Thibaudet, piano Liszt, Les préludes Liszt, Piano Concerto No. 2 in A Major Schumann, Symphony No. 2 Two titans of the Romantic repertoire close out our 2017 Summer Season.

Liszt’s tone poem Les préludes opens the program followed by French pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet’s characteristic “fiery account” (The Washington Post) of the composer’s Piano Concerto No. 2.

Schumann’s Second Symphony tells the story of his personal triumph over adversity. Set in the bright key of C Major, this uplifting symphony brings the Caramoor summer season to a properly sunny close.
