never expected this summer to go so quickly. It seems like we had an abundance of the cold and rainy days of “spring” and now the hot days of Summer are upon us. Now I am gearing up for fall, my favorite season. I have plenty of work to tackle but I also enjoy taking some time to spend with the family and outside.

My absolute favorite thing to do in the fall is pick apples. Picking has been something my family has done for years and it always gives me a sense of home when I’m in the orchard, or enjoying a donut with a cup of cider. Sharing that with my friends and family makes me feel like I’m passing on tradition.
Back to School: Welcome back to school! Some things I noticed after a few years at this senior photo thing. Locaiton Scouting: What I’ve noticed as my past clients have graduated. What to Watch: Struggling to find something to watch? Here are a few underrated shows to consider. Booking Your Portraits: Why you should plan your portraits now, and what you should consider when doing so.
What is your favorite season? What do you find yourself doing every year that you enjoy sharing with others? I encourage you to incorporate these types of things into your photos to hold on to the memory forever.

SCHOOL S UCC E S S The end of summer came to a screeching hault for so many of us. Personally I was not ready for my little ones to go back to school, and I can imagine many of you were not ready to head back to school yet either. On the other hand, I can see how it would be a relief to return to a routine, and see all of your friends on a regular basis again. Sometimes not feeding your brain daily makes you feel stale. So as I was gearing up to send my (not-so) little ones back to school, I have to think about what helps them best prepare. They’re getting much older now, and it won’t be long now before they’ll be talking about their graduation (I can’t believe I just wrote that down). I did a little digging and here is what I found that is proven to help. Exercise. Exercise is proven to change the brains chemistry. It releases mood altering hormones which enhances information retention. Retelling. Retelling and reflection of the information you are studying will also help retain it. Cramming will only store it in your short term memory, which will not necessarily lead to success. Reviewing it and reliving it will help store this information into long-term knowledge, increasing your chances for success. Sleep. Our brain is most ready to learn during the first two hours of the day. Napping before a study time will give you a second burst of the alpha brain waves your body produces just as it does when you wake in the morning. When you learn new information your brain makes new connections, when you get sleep, it helps grow and nourish these connections. Take breaks. Don’t push yourself too hard. Straining yourself to try and get something done or remember information will only cause you to forget it. Take fequent breaks and give your body time to process the information you are feeding it. Just like you shouldn’t binge eat, you shouldn’t binge on information. A good routine to ensure success is Study, Excercise, Retell, Rest. Find a friend and find a routine. Stay healthy and be successful in school this will carry through to the rest of your life.

LOCATION
SCOUTING Over the years I have shot portraits in many places, including Michigan, Illinois, Texas and soon Las Vegas. One thing that I find many of my clients struggle to tell me where they’d like their photos taken. I have a full gallery of locations and styles to inspire those who are unsure or on the fence, and pinterest is a fantastic source of inspiration as well.
When a client comes to me and says “HERE is where I want my portraits done” it tells me that they have been thinking a lot about what they want, and they’re big-time planners. I am always excited to see what they have in mind, it gives me a great idea of what they’ve been imagining for their photos and I can easily imagine it with them. I love discovering new places with them, and there is always something they will teach me that I didn’t know about these places because something about it is important to them. When someone asks me for suggestions about a location it leaves so much more to the imagination. This is who I am writing for. Everything from the style of the location to the clothes you wear pull your final photo together. Think about what photos you have been seeing that draw you to them. What is it about them that you are attracted to? Is it the location? Are their mountains, trees, buildings? We can mimic all of those things if you tell me thats what you are drawn to, but there is more to that image than those things. What else has your pulse raised? Is there a dress or jeans? Is it a sunset or is the sun bold in the sky? These are the things that help navigate a location, a setting. This is what builds your shoot.

I truly encourage trying to make each shoot and location unique to you. If you can, or will, make time to find spots that have meaning to you in some way. If you spend a lot of time at the library, lets shoot there. Or if you like to hang out in your hammock at the state park, why not make a shoot around that. We want to remember you the way that you are now. Tell your story, that is what is important. Be classic and truthful. When someone is really stuck, I like to first look at their pinterest boards that they create to get an idea of the type of locations and styles that they enjoy. Once I have established their style, I will suggest some locations of where we might want to shoot. Clients will then be responsible for pairing several outfits for each location. Having multiple outfits for each spot will give them the opportunity to have more than one “look”. I always encourage them to bring extra outfits, shoes, and accessories. You really never know what you might want to change. I haven’t really come across too many bad locations. The key is to go there at the right time, or on the right day. There ARE some that I just won’t go to, and some that I am excited to go to over and over again.

STATUS What it is, Why you want it. Think about it. – most of you will have your photos taken. Several of you will have those photos taken by a professional photographer (hello). Why not be a part of a program that offers you photos THROUGHOUT your ENTIRE SENIOR YEAR. Here’s a little bit of what you get when you enroll: A full one-on-one session, fully customized to your style; hair and make-up included. Your wardrobe will be reviewed during our wardrobe consultation and you will have unique location selections and a full day during the season of your choosing with your photographer (yours truly). Throughout the rest of your senior year you will get to choose to participate in many different pop-up shoots in and out of the studio – yes, we shoot in the studio too, and it’s warm there in the winter. Regardless, if you choose to participate in any group or individual pop-up shoots, you will get a cap and gown photo shoot at the end of your senior year. Seriously, how are you not already signed up?! This is just some of the perks. I haven’t even mentioned the opportunity for destination photo shoots and our parties and classes. All of these things are available for the ENTIRE YEAR for spokesmodels.

what to WATCH The struggle is real! You finally get some quiet time and you turn on the TV and you just can’t decide what to watch, right? Well I have this struggle frequently. I should say, I have this struggle when I finally do have a chance to actually sit down, and when I do have control of the remote. Ok, so not frequently, but still. To decide what to watch it has to be good when I do get the chance. Otherwise I feel like it might just be a waste of my time. So here is are some reviews of shows that I have found to not necessarily be a complete waste of time, but that are not always the most popular shows to watch right now. Adam Ruins Everything. Adam can ruin everything all day long for me. I love it! He downright gets the facts and tells it like it is, and I am all about learning why and how things are the way they are. Some of the topics and content may not be ideal for everyone, so be advised and choose wisely, but the education he brings to his viewers is valuable in my opinion. Taco Chronicles. Just don’t watch it hungry. The subtitles get a little frustrating, especially if you’re like me and always multitask when your TV is on, I miss a lot, but the history and education of tacos is fascinating. Maybe just because I love tacos so much, but that seems to be a pretty common thing, so, you’re welcome. Lie to Me. Dangit I can’t believe this was ever discontinued. I loved his sarcastic and abrasive personality. Maybe because it’s a little reflective sometimes, but the cases were open and shut with every episode (mostly) from what I can remember so it was an easy-watcher for someone who didn’t have time to binge watch shows.

Black List. Another snarky character here folks, but a little more on the action-adventure side. DEXTER! How about this one, I named my dog after him for crying out loud. What can I say, investigating his own crimes, it’s pretty amusing. Dead to me. I’ve always loved Christina Applegate, so I started watching for this reason, but got hooked on the story line. I love a good cliff hanger, and so this one keeps me satisified enough to come back, but informed enough that I don’t feel like I missed out if I don’t get a chance to watch it for a few days or weeks. There are probably a dozen others I’ve tried to watch over the past year or so, that I just forgot about because, well, I just started one episode and forgot to go back to it. Moral of the story is, don’t be afraid to take the time and try something new. If you find something, tell me, I’ll try it too.
SPOKESMODEL HIGHLIGHT Lily Johnson Orchard View High School Lily is a big fan of Volleyball and Soccer. If you can’t find her on the field or on the court, she might be sewing bandanas for our four-legged friends, or spending time outdoors with her family. Lily dreams of attending Purdue and is happy to be a member of the National Honor Society. Lily is a Senior // Class of 2020
