I
n this issue, for the new year I decided I would do things a little differently. In addition to highlighting the amazing studio shoot with Yasmeen, I wanted to pull a few images from other sessions this year and hopefully inspire you all for your portraits as well. Now is the time to start thinking about senior portraits if you are a current junior. Start watching clothing sales and trends, start noting some of your favorite spots to capture, and even pin ideas to Pinterest that inspire you. Planning your shoot now gives you a full year of seasons to choose from. Book your date early because fiends,
work, school, or life in general will get busy, I promise. And you want to make the most of all of the time you have left for the year. I currently include studio time with my Senior Packages. I feel like it is a great way to give my clients time to warm up to the camera, and also gives us a chance to go over the different styles and looks and coordinate them in advance of heading out to our first location. I encourage you to take a look at some of these amazing sessions, be inspired, and then ask me anything.

In December, 2019 I ran a social media push, asking followers to comment with a gif and tell me what they wanted for Christmas. The response was fantastic. I loved the answers some of you all posted. Tacos may have been my favorite, but there were some other great ideas, such as a charm bracelet and a camera. The gif with the most reactions was winner. Enter Yasmeen. Her friends and family went full force up-voting her response. I really appreciated the amount of support I saw. Once voting was over, I reached out to Yasmeen and asked her to name some of the musicians she was loving right now. “My favorite singers are Ella Mai, Post Malone, and Juice Wrld.” I had to look them all up of course, because I am not current on music, and I only know who Post Malone is from the various memes I have seen online. After a google search or two, I was giddy. I said to Yasmeen, “I think it would be fun to replicate one of your favorite stars shoots” and I sent her a few images I pulled of Ella Mai from my search. It was like fireworks. As an up and coming artist Ella Mai does not have a lot of images yet. After going through the handful of images I could find, we decided to take on the task of reinventing her Debut

album cover. The original photo of Ella Mai was taken by Jonathan Mannion, a very talented and well known artist in his own right, he photographs many musicians and artists.
The idea of looking at the images of artists that you look up to is a great way to get inspired for your images if you are stuck. Some people know exactly what, when and how they want to shoot their photos, but for those of you who want to do something a little out of the box, this is an excellent idea for you.

Looking at Ella Mai’s Debut photo, a few things stood out right away. The fur coat was fabulous, but I could not find that coat anywhere. I found a similar one on amazon but the reviews were terrible. I ended up finding the one we used online at H & M. WATCH THE BTS VIDEO
Then there was the issue of the couch. Of course I could have scoured stores looking for a blush colored velvet couch, or I could cover one of mine with the same fabric, so that is what I did. 3 yards of pink later, I have a pink couch in my studio. Viola. Of course there was still the glaring issue of Yasmeen’s stick straight hair against Ella Mai’s natural curls. My search for a wig proved more difficult than anything else. I did not want to order an African American wig and try to make Yasmeen something she is not. I just wanted to inspire the look after Ella Mai’s, so after quite a lot of digging, I was able to find a wavy brown wig that still had the volume we were after. And with that, all of our pieces were complete and we were ready to shoot. Continued - see “The Transformation.”

Transformation With the jacket and the wig, Yasmeen was ready to become Ella Mai for the day. Enter the magic and talent of hair and makeup artist Daniela Chelsea Moon at Salon Koje in Fruitport. She always does an amazing job with my clients, and this time was no different.
Here are some behind the scenes photos of the process in the salon that transformed Yasmeen into Ella Mai for her photoshoot. We made a video of the process too, so check that out.

1. First step was pull back Yasmeen’s natural hair. Two braids did the trick here. 2. Lay down a solid foundation. 3. Chelsea is amazing at applying makeup that holds up under the heat of the lights and fills in pores without flashing back at the camera. 4. Simple shadow and eyes emulate Ella Mai’s style in her shoot. The more natural the better. 5. The braids have to be pinned up. Yasmeen experiences an ASMR video for the first time. 6. The cap of all caps. Tuck in all those hairs! 7. On with the hair. This wig was actually really well put together, adjustable, and fun! 8. Not complete, but close. After a little trimming and teasing, we’re done. Time to shoot.

SESSION FEATURE
BRIYANNA Every spokesmodel gets a full session during the season of their choosing. Bri scheduled her session during the summer, and we were lucky to have the weather cooperate. Our first location was a bright and colorful mural in Grand Haven, one I have never shot at before. Bri did her homework, and brought a ton of clothes to build her wardrobe on the fly. She had this amazing blue romper that went perfectly with the bright colors of the abstract mural. The space was tight, and we remained respectful of nearby homes and businesses, using a wide angle lens worked perfect for this style. Her powerful glances and stances worked wonderfully in this setting. Once we wrapped up at the Mural, we headed over to a county park. The timing couldn’t have been any better. This location is usually a pretty hopping place, but on this day we had it all to ourselves. The thing I like most about this spot is the bright yellow aster flowers that bloom during the summer and fall. They are
often overlooked, but they add such a beautiful backdrop. Of course bug spray is always a must when visiting country settings especially. Safety first! There are a few shots where I think Bri is actually looking at a bee pollinating the flowers, but her genuine gaze is gorgeous. At the park, there are several barns, so we made sure to shoot at all of those before heading out. Our next, and final stop was the lake. We headed over to the beach for some fun, dramatic photos in the sand. Really, it’s my favorite when my clients are having fun and we’re out just having a good time. This is definitely what we were doing here. Wrapping up the shoot at the beach is always the best. Not only do you get the best light at the end of the day, but chances are you’re definitely going to get a little sandy. Bri’s day was filled with fun and laughs. With no deadlines and a car full of clothes, we definitely made the most of her photoshoot day.
SESSION FEATURE
MADISON
One of my most memorable shoots took place with a client who surprised me at every turn. From the first time I met Madison, I was impressed by her. She was so comfortable, confident, and mature. She had such and ease about her. Madison had already put so much thought into her photos. She knew what spots she wanted to shoot at, and she came prepared at our initial meeting. Her family has beautiful property where she spent much of her childhood, and she wanted to incorporate as much of that as possible into her photos. I was ecstatic. I couldn’t wait to see what this land had in store for us. The day that I showed up ready to shoot, I was greeted by the friendliest family ever. I mean, this is storybook! Madison was ready to go and we immediately set out on a path into the woods. Their property was covered in different trees, the fall
colors were at their peak, and the sun was shining (it was cold, but the sun was out). When we came out to her first spot, her grandfather met us on a front-load tractor carrying a beautiful white rocking chair. Thanks Grandpa! This was the perfect prop for the beautiful opening in the woods that Madison had picked out. From the rocking char in the woods, we moved on to an amazing creek running through the property. As we worked our way through the several acres of beautiful landscape, it was inspiring and exciting to see Madison was so connected to her surroundings. We wrapped that location with some fun shots of her hanging from her favorite tree, then moved on to a coffee shop to snap a few more and warm up with the most delicious coffee ever. Something we both cherish almost as much as the outdoors. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Madison and her family.

STATUS What it is, Why you want it. Think about it – most of you will have your photos taken. Several of you will have those photos taken by a professional photographer (hello). Why not be a part of a program that offers you photos THROUGHOUT your ENTIRE SENIOR YEAR. Here’s a little bit of what you get when you enroll: A full day, one-on-one session, fully customized to your style; hair and make-up included. Your wardrobe will be reviewed during our wardrobe consultation and you will have unique location selections and a full day during the season of your choosing with your photographer (yours truly). Throughout the rest of your senior year you will get to choose to participate in many different pop-up shoots in and out of the studio – yes, we shoot in the studio too, and it’s warm there in the winter. Regardless, if you choose to participate in any group or individual pop-up shoots, you will get a cap and gown photo shoot at the end of your senior year. Seriously, how are you not already signed up?! This is just some of the perks. I haven’t even mentioned the opportunity for destination photo shoots and our parties and classes. All of these things are available for the ENTIRE YEAR for spokesmodels.
